Those that are volunteering do both and the Clubhouse looks like a bunch of very busy ants getting things in order. It is very organized with everything in its proper place - a very smooth and efficient routine. The Clubhouse will close Thursday March 27,2014 at noon and be closed all day Friday March 28, 2014 for setup. Friday is the day that you will bring all your final donations to Dan Gorden Hall for our volunteers to sort and put in place. 3 ZONEWATCHPROGRAM What is the Zone Watch Program? Our new residents are asking, and residents that have lived at Hawthorne for a while, but are not active in the community, need this information updated, so here goes! Zone Watch was established to make available the weekly_distribution of information to every resident. It is a source for the Board of Directors in announcing plans, programs and policies of importance. It serves to announce matters relating to our required notices - our Annual Meeting and Elections. Club Hawthorne uses Zone Watch to announce all the weekly activities, Club functions, and special notices. This is the heart of Zone Watch or as I like to call it, "The Umbrella way of sharing information" As we begin the busy 2014 Season, we feel the need to remind all of our residents of the current needs of volunteers for Zone Watch. Hawthorne is divided into 64 Zones, each having a Zone Captain and Co-Captain. A group of zones, such as zone 1 through zone 10, use the color Yellow to identify which Zone group they are in. The zone is made up of several streets located close by. These Captains report to one of eight Coordinators and they have a Zone Chairman and Co-Chairman to assist them in the Program. The role of Zone Captain is very important because he or she is our information line between management, security and the resident. They cannot do it without you. The duties of a Zone Captain are to become acquainted with each resident in his/her zone, and let them know where they live and their phone number. It is very important that we have a list of all persons in each zone that need special assistance in case of an emergency situation. It is also important that your Zone Captain know when you are going to be away for a length of time so they and security can keep an eye on your home..

4 =~~= ~-- Your Zone Captain must oversee the weekly deliveries. They will keep a yearly list of which resident will deliver for each month. Please sign up for the most convenient month to fit your schedule for delivering. We make every effort to keep the Zone Watch duties as simple as possible. We schedule monthly Zone gatherings to share back and forth any issues and meet new neighbors. Each year during March, we have a luncheon for all Captains and their spouses to say "Thank You" for a great job. Please do your part as a volunteer in yourzone. If you are not active in your zone now, please call Chairman Suzanne Klopp at , and sign up to do your part. Currently, due to residents moving, we are in need of Zone Coordinators, one for the Red Zone and one for the Yellow Zone. We also need several Captains for the listed zones: It takes very little of your time. Please call and volunteer. Currently, due to residents moving, we are in need of two Zone Coordinators, Zone 1-10 and 11-20, the Yellow and Red Zones. It would be so helpful if a Captain in one of these Zones would step up to the Coordinator position. Their duties are to assign a volunteer resident as Captain for each of those Zones, providing the proper paperwork of resident's names and addresses in each Zone, and assist the Captain in having the Zone social at the selected time. Zones needing captains at this time are 45 and 46. Please do your part as a volunteer in your zone. If you are not active in your zone now, please call Chairperson, Suzanne Klopp at , and sign up. HAWTHORNE DRAGON FLIES Hawthorne Dragon Boat Club will be involved in different types of racing this year. The first race will be March 1, 2014 in Tampa on the Alafia River. 7 CLUB HAWTHORNE ACTIVITY ELECTION Club Hawthorne election time is upon us. It is time to think about electing officers for your activities. Each activity must elect prior to March 1ST, a Chairman, Co-Chairman, SecretaryfTreasurer, tee of three or more members. and a Steering Commit- Remember - no Chairman or Co-Chairman shall hold that office for more than two consecutive years with the term of office being one year beginning April 1. Also, when a member of Club Hawthorne is elected as Chairman or Co-Chairman of an activity, he or she may hold no more than one Chairmanship or Co-Chairmanship of separate activities at anyone time. This term of office shall not exceed two full years. FAILURE TO ELECT OFFICERS TERMINATES AN ACTIVITY. Council will not recognize the activity and your right to a meeting time and place will be pre-empted by recognized activities and functions. One of the duties of the present Activity Chairman is to form a nominating committee to nominate members for the position of Council Officer and Deputy Council Officer. Said Officers will be elected at the March Group meeting. It is important that the nominee has an interest, be willing to serve if elected, and be available to attend the regular meeting of the Council on the second Thursday of the month as well as the Group meetings held on the third Thursday of the month. These meetings usually recess during the summer months unless a special meeting is called. The Council is the governing body of Club Hawthorne. consecutive terms and the term of office is for one year. No Council Officer or Deputy shall serve more than four The Council Officers are elected representatives of activities in a category. There is one Council Officer and one Deputy Council Officer for each of these categories. Categories are: CommunicationlEducation, Arts and Crafts, Musical, Physical, Social-Community, Social-Game, Sports, State and Zone Clubs. Remember - volunteers run Hawthorne. You are encouraged to get involved and be part of this successful organization. We always need new ideas and new faces to help keep things going. Election forms may be picked up in the Program Office. The completed form must have nominees for Councilor they will be returned to the activity to be completed. Turn the forms into your Council Officer and not the Program Office. Activities should have t~eir electioasesults turned into their Council Offices by February 28th. Election of Council Officers will be held at the Group Meeting on Thursday March 14th. This meeting is moved up one week due to the HRCA Annual Meeting and Election on Thursday, March 21st. Please make sure all nominees selected to run for the Council have agreed to run and will be committed to serve and represent your activity. REMEMBER: Turn in your election forms to your Council Officer. HA WTHORNE PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB Ever wonder how to get sharper pictures with your camera? Ever wonder how to control what's in focus and what's not when you shoot a picture? Ever wonder how to keep from getting redeye and annoying shadows when you shoot flash pictures of people? Ever wonder how to get sharper pictures with your camera? Ever wonder how to control what's in focus and what's not when you shoot a picture? Ever wonder how to use artificial light to shape your subjects and get the effects you want in your pictures? Ever wonder how to manage the kind of composition that makes some people's pictures sing? Ever wonder how to get rid of stuff in your pictures that you don't want there, or how to get rid of redeye in pictures you've already shot? If you've wondered about any of these things, come on and join the Hawthorne Photography Club in the Lime room on Tuesdays at 1:00. We sometimes have short lectures on subjects like these, but most ofthe time we beat questions and answers off each other. Collectively there's a lot of photographic knowledge in the group: folks who range all the way from semi-pro to rank beginners. Besides that, we laugh a lot and have a lot of fun. Oh, and there are no dues. It's a freebie. And if you're just wondering how to turn on your camera, we can help with that too. If you want information before you decide to waste a couple hours in the Lime Room on Tuesday afternoon, check on your computer. to see you there. It's a blast!!! Hope

8 Hawthorne's Olympic Torchbearer The Olympic Torch Relay is an honored tradition that always precedes the Summer and Winter Olympic Games which are held alternately in the even years, every four years. Thousands of Torchbearers, over the course of several months, carry the Flame across the host country to symbolize the approaching Olympics. The Torch Relay always begins with the ceremonial lighting of the Flame in Olympia, Greece at the site of the original Olympic Stadium where women, dressed in robes similar to the ones worn by the ancient Greeks, use a curved mirror to light the Torch naturally with the sun's rays. The ceremony for the xxn Winter Olympics was held on September 29,2013. From there, the Flame traveled to Moscow, Russia where the Torchbearers began their journey on October 7, The relay will have traveled from Moscow through 2,900 towns and villages across all 83 regions of Russia by foot, car, train, plane, and sled for over 40,000 miles to it's final destination: the Olympic Stadium in Sochi where on February 7, 2014, a Torchbearer will use the flame to ignite the cauldron to start the XXII Winter Olympics to be held February 8th through February 23rd. The relay will become the longest in Winter Olympics history. While the 2014 Torch Relay may be the longest in history, it certainly is not the most significant for the Serfass family. When the XIX Winter Olympic Torch Relay began on December 4,2001 in Atlanta, GA, Jim Serfass was anxiously awaiting the once-in-a lifetime honor and privilege of carrying the Olympic Flame. Early in 2011, Jim was chosen from over 210,000 nominees be one of 11,500 Torchbearers who would pass the Flame (the torch is not passed from one person to another, only the Flame) through 46 states, across 13,500 miles, during 65 days ofthe Torch Relay that would end on February 8, 2012 with the lighting of the cauldron to begin the XIX Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. The theme of the 2002 Winter Olympics was "Inspiration" and according to the Olympic Committee criteria, selected Torchbearers would be "people from all walks of life who have inspired others, whether an individual or a community." Jim was nominated for this honor by his sister, Barbara, who submitted a 100 word essay describing how he had always been an inspiration to her because of his dedication to family ("he donated a kidney to our niece in 1996 and was always there when we needed him," she wrote), his positive outlook on life, his great sense of humor and his humility. Jim's moment of fame came on December 22, 2011 when he carried the Torch for approximately one quarter mile and passed the Flame that Saturday evening on Broad Street in Philadelphia, PA. Approximately 75 proud friends and family members, including his sister and me - the proudest of all, were there to witness the historic event and cheer him on. My gift to Jim that Christmas was the Torch he had carried. (Torchbearers were allowed to keep the Torch "for a price" so "Santa" made the arrangements for him to have it.) If you'd like to see it, stop by Dan Gorden Hall during the month of February when Jim's Torch and other memorabilia will be on display. And if you happen meet Jim somewhere in Hawthorne, he's always happy and proud to talk about his once-ina lifetime experience.
