2 WELCOME ADDRESS WELCOME ADDRESS As you are aware, end of 2009 EUSA celebrated its10th anniversary with a magnificent gala dinner in Vienna, an unforgettable night which has seen the participation of our Member s delegates, the Executive Committee and our staff. To those who are going through the pages of our Magazine for the first time, I would like to devote a few words on our Association and the activities carried out so far. At present, EUSA is one of the most active University Sport Associations worldwide which gathers 43 European countries and organises yearly European Universities Championships, EUSA Cups as well as Conventions, Symposiums and other events all over Europe. The appreciation and respect which is highly reputed in our Association, arises from its structure, its management, its capability to effect and communicate in the fields of culture and education. Moreover, the significant increase of the participation in our events is a clear demonstration of the huge success achieved by EUSA in its activity being today the benchmark for the University Institutions. As you can see from the broad range of activities just described, EUSA is an Association that does not stand still. It also provides a very useful and updated Website which keeps our Members constantly informed on the activities and all the events, facilitating the universities in enrolling their teams in our Championships. I feel very privileged and honoured to be involved with such a dynamic Association. However, all these activities are only possible due to the enormous level of support and encouragement we receive from our Members and the huge work of our Secretariat which can count on a new fully equipped office in Ljubljana, Executive Committee Members, Technical Delegates, Student and Medical Commission. Notwithstanding the great achievement we witnessed through the last decade, EUSA is now approaching a new era in which innovative goals are about to be reached. As a matter of fact, thanks to a continued work aimed at spreading out the values and the passion for the University sport, we managed to involve more countries in our activity as well as to meet high academic authorities. The result of this effort is the establishment of the EUSA Games to be held in Cordoba, Spain, which for the first time will foresee the organisation of 10 different Championships at the same place at the same time. Moreover, EUSA has strengthened the relations with other Continental Associations and is setting up the organisation of Intercontinental Championships which will be determined in the nearby future. Our Association is also involved in cooperation with ENGSO and other partners in a project which has been chosen by EU among all those presented on the problem of doping. The project is supported by the EU funds and will foresee the organisation of Conferences and Seminars on this specific matter aimed at reducing doping in sport. Last, but certainly not least, I want to gratefully acknowledge our major sponsor Asiana Airline and partner FISU, both demonstrating a strong support and commitment to our Association. Alberto Gualtieri, President 2
