2 Hello New Members! Welcome to TEAM ALTIUS, a community-based running club offered through Northern Arizona University s Center for High Altitude Training. We are at the beginning of our third year and are thrilled to build upon the wonderful achievements realized in the last two years. NAU is proud to be designated a U.S. Olympic Training Site for distance running. We believe this designation provides a wonderful opportunity to take the training principles used with the many elite athletes affiliated with our training center and apply them to active members of the local community. I sincerely hope you enjoy your experience with TEAM ALTIUS and am confident you will benefit from the training you receive from myself and coach Jack. For those of you who have been with us in the past, we are happy to see you continue your running and hope the season ahead will be associated with more personal best performances. 3 Coaching Staff Jack T. Daniels, PhD, Head Coach Jack brings to TEAM ALTIUS, 31 years of experience as a high-level track and cross country coach. He has coached 31 individual NCAA National Champions, eight NCAA National Team Champions and 131 All Americans. He was named the NCAA Cross Country Coach of the Century, has been the National Coach of the Year three times and was named the World s Best Coach by Runner s World Magazine. Jack has published five books on training, including the best-selling Daniels Running Formula, and over 50 articles in scientific journals on both running and training. He spent six years as the research director for exercise physiology at Nike, Inc. and was a Team Nike honoree in Jack was the altitude consultant for the U.S. Olympic Track and Field team at the Mexico City Olympics and spent one year as the head coach of Peru s National Track Team. His personal competitive experience includes earning silver and bronze Olympic medals and a bronze World Championship medal in the modern pentathlon. Michael D. Smith, MA, Assistant Coach Mike s background in elementary education, combined with his talent and dedication as one of the nation s promising emerging elite runners, make him well-suited to coach members of TEAM ALTIUS. Mike has proven leadership skills, evidenced in his capacity as co-captain of the Georgetown Men s Track and Field and Cross Country teams, and membership on the Student Athlete Leadership Advisory Committee. He was a 2002 NCAA All- American in Cross Country, and a Big East Conference Academic All-Star four years in a row. 3

Spring, Summer, and Fall workouts generally take place at NAU s Lumberjack Stadium outdoor track. Winter workouts take place at the NAU Skydome indoor track. TEAM ALTIUS members are not required to participate in the weekly workouts, although are highly encouraged to do so. 5 Code of Conduct & Standards of Behavior Code of Conduct Participation on TEAM ALTIUS is a privilege which carries with it responsibilities on the part of the athlete and team. TEAM ALTIUS athletes are provided the opportunity, encouragement, and necessary support to develop athletic abilities in an environment consistent with high standards of sportsmanship, leadership and equal opportunity. While TEAM ALTIUS athletes may sometimes train alone, the role of the athlete in the community can be a highly visible one. It places the individual in full view of the public, which scrutinizes the athlete s behavior both in and out of the training environment. This can impact perceptions of the athlete, as well as perceptions of the team as a whole. Northern Arizona University and the Center for High Altitude Training have standards of behavior for all athletes who train in Flagstaff and on the university campus. These standards apply to all participants from TEAM ALTIUS to the most elite Olympic team. Standards of Behavior All participants are expected to comply with all state and federal laws, and policies set forth by NAU, the Arizona Board of Regents, the athlete s sport National Governing Body, and the United States Olympic Committee. In addition to these general expectations, athletes specifically must abide by the following: 1. The transportation, possession or unauthorized use of alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs, or IOC-banned substances on the premises is prohibited; 2. Unacceptable behavior will not be tolerated, including but not limited to, the following: a) Any act or comment considered offensive under federal, state, or local laws, or Northern Arizona University policies and procedures; b) Gross misconduct (i.e., inappropriate horseplay, theft, fighting, etc.); c) Willful destruction of property (i.e., including that caused by inappropriate horseplay, fighting, etc.). 8. Athletes must abide by all NAU facility usage policies and guidelines including but not limited to, Lumberjack Stadium, Walkup Skydome, Recreation Center, Field House, Multi-purpose Fields, Wall Aquatic Center, Residence Halls, Fronske Health Center, Clinical Exercise Research Facility, and the Gait Research Lab. Failure to comply with the Code of Conduct and Standards of Behavior described herein may result in full or partial forfeitures of TEAM ALTIUS privileges and other disciplinary action as necessary. 5

6 Information on USA Track & Field TEAM ALTIUS operates as a member organization of USATF, the national governing body for track and field, long distance running, and race walking in the United States. Membership to USATF is separate from TEAM ALTIUS membership. Joining USATF is not a requirement to be a member of TEAM ALTIUS, but is encouraged. Membership in USATF is required to compete for TEAM ALTIUS in club championships and USATF sanctioned events. Runners must have USATF membership to qualify for team scoring. Why join USATF? Becoming a member of USATF allows you to show support for the sport of running in the United States through grassroots clubs like TEAM ALTIUS all the way to the athletes who represent the United States at the Olympic Games.
