2 INTRODUCTION Conducted by The Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland (RNA), the Royal Queensland Show Floristry Competition (RQSFC) has been established to celebrate excellence in the art of floristry. Providing Florists from Queensland and across Australia with an essential benchmarking opportunity, the competition is open to both students and floristry professionals alike. Judging will take place during the Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) in August at the Flower and Garden Precinct located at the iconic Old Museum. WHY YOU SHOULD ENTER There are many reasons to enter, including: Entrants are provided an unparalleled opportunity to benchmark their floral arrangements against their peers. Entrants will have the ability to promote their business to over 350,000 attendees at the Royal Queensland Show Medal-winning entrants will be provided with a Marketing & PR Tool Kit including electronic marketing material such as Gold, Silver and Bronze medals to assist with promoting their performance to use when marketing their service, business or products with a seal of quality. WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW WHEN ENTERING The RQSFC is a credible and impartial competition conducted by one of Australia s most highly esteemed Royal Agricultural Societies, the RNA, the organisation responsible for the Royal Queensland Show and the Royal Queensland Food & Wine Show. The judging panel boasts some of the Australian s most highly respected florists and educators. Entries are judged on their own merits against a set of criteria (see Scoring & Medals for details). 1
3 Floristry COMPETITION CLASSES Class 1 Wedding floristry - Professional Theme: Wedding table centerpiece suitable for a formal wedding table. Entry fee: $25 Exhibitors must include a proportion of Queensland-grown flowers all species and cultivars accepted. Exhibit will be displayed and judged alongside other entrants along a formal wedding table setting. Container, materials and flowers to be supplied by the entrant. Exhibit must be suitably sized as a wedding table centrepiece and suited to withstand five days indoor display time. Class 2 Corporate floristry - Open Theme: Queensland tropical Living suitable for a table centrepiece Entry fee: $25 Open to all professional, student and amateur floral designers. Exhibitors must include a proportion of Queensland-grown tropical flowers and foliage all species and cultivars accepted. Container, materials and flowers to be supplied by the entrant. Exhibit must be suited to withstand five days indoor display time. Top 40cm x 40cm, Height 90cm. Class 3 Wedding floristry - Student Theme: Wedding table centerpiece suitable for a formal wedding table. Entry fee: Free Exhibitors must include a proportion of Queensland-grown flowers all species and cultivars accepted. Floristry display: To be displayed and judged alongside other entrants along a formal wedding table setting. Container, materials and flowers to be supplied by the entrant. Exhibit must be suitably sized as a wedding table centrepiece and suited to withstand five days indoor display time. Trophy Champion Florist of Show Awarded to the highest points scored across classes 1 to 2. MYSTERY BOX CHALLENGE Class 4 Floristry Mystery Box - Student Theme: Aussie backyard lineal design Entry fee: Free A selection of flowers, horticultural materials and accessories will be provided at the commencement of the competition including all flowers, sundries, containers and other materials required for the arrangement. Arrangements are to be constructed live onstage within 90 minutes and must be suitable for display on a pedestal measuring 40x40cm. Class 5 Floristry Mystery Box - Open Theme: Aussie backyard lineal design Entry fee: $20 Open to all professional, student and amateur floral designers. A selection of flowers, horticultural materials and accessories will be provided at the commencement of the competition including all flowers, sundries, containers and other materials required for the arrangement. : Arrangements are to be constructed live onstage within 90 minutes and must be suitable for display on a pedestal measuring 40x40cm. 2
4 CLASSES FLORISTY JUDGING PROCESS Judging of the 2018 RQSFC will take place at the Old Museum, Bowen Hills during the Royal Queensland Show (Friday 10 August to Sunday 19 August). Judging is closed to exhibitors, and the public. To ensure the integrity of the competition, anonymity of the Exhibits will be ensured. Exhibits are judged and are critically and quantitatively evaluated for their commercial excellence, and quality attributes. Exhibits are not judged or ranked against each other but are assessed on their own merits. i.e. more than one exhibitor can be awarded a gold medal. Attribute scores for each Exhibit will be awarded, checked, and entered by the judging panel. Classes will be judged to Bronze, Silver and Gold Medal. The process for determining the Trophy winner will be at the discretion of the Judging panel. Only Gold Medal-awarded Exhibits are eligible for Trophies. Awards may be withheld or restricted in any Class where Exhibits are considered unworthy or if insufficient entries are available. The Head Judge, in consultation with the Competition & Event Manager, shall have the power to reallocate, dismiss or disqualify as being ineligible for judging, any exhibit that, in their opinion, does not comply with the regulations in every respect, and such reallocation, dismissal or disqualification shall be accepted as final. The above instructions do not in any way limit or restrict any of the powers, discretions, rights, and duties conferred upon the judges by the regulations or RNA s powers under the regulations. JUDGING PANEL This year the RNA has selected a panel of florist industry experts to assess the entries. SCORING CRITERIA Exhibits will be scored out of one hundred (100) points and will be assessed against the following criteria: Elements Points Score/Comments 1. Character & Form Principles of Design 60 Balance 10 Dominance 10 Contrast 10 Rhythm 10 Proportion 5 Scale 5 Unity & Harmony Creativity Technique & finish Condition 5 Total 100 MEDALS Medals will be awarded to entries as follows: Medal Points Range Gold Points A Gold Medal Exhibit is an outstanding Exhibit Silver Points A Silver Medal Exhibit is an excellent Exhibit Bronze Points A Bronze Medal Exhibit is a quality Exhibit 3
5 SUBMITTING YOUR ENTRIES Once payment has been received and your entries have been verified as correctly entered and accepted for entry into the 2018 RQSFC you will receive, by an Exhibitor Entry Confirmation containing your labels in PDF format and instructions on how to submit your entries. Please contact the Competition & Event Coordinator if you do not receive this . DELIVERY OF EXHIBITS Exhibits are to be dropped off to the Old Museum, Gregory Terrace, Bowen Hills via Gate 1A. Classes 1 and 2: Exhibits must be delivered Thursday 9 August between 12pm and 4pm Class 3: Exhibits must be delivered Tuesday 14 August between 5.30pm and 6.30pm PRIZES Medal recipients will have access to the official Royal Queensland Show artwork for marketing purposes. Classes 1, 2 and 3: Gold: Silver: Bronze: One adult entry ticket to The World Flower Council Summit (day registration Wednesday 19 September), 12-month subscription to Flowers Magazine, 12-month membership to Flowers Australia, $50 floral 12-month subscription to Flowers Magazine, 12-month membership to Flowers Australia $25 floral 12-month subscription to Flowers Magazine, 12-month membership to Flowers Australia CLASS MYSTERY BOX Competitors will be provided an assortment of flowers, foliage and accessories. This will include a container and sundries. Competitors will be required to bring their own tools (secateurs, knives etc..). The aim will be to create an individual design using the provided products in the mystery box. A time limit of 1 hour will be set at the end of which designs will be judged according to the principles of design as detailed outlined below. SCORING CRITERIA Elements Points Score/Comments 1. The results catalogue will also be ed to exhibitors following the decision. Where medals have been awarded, Exhibitor results s will include links to downloadable digital medal artwork as well as a link to the Marketing & PR Tool Kit. Trophies and Medal Certificates will be posted in the weeks following the announcement of the winners. 7 GENERAL REGULATIONS AND ACCEPTANCE OF ENTRIES Judging will be performed by a panel of Judges appointed by the Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland. Subject to the Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland Act 1971, and to the Rules, By- Laws and Regulations of the Association the following Special General Regulations shall apply. The attention of Exhibitors is drawn to the fact that entries are accepted subject to the Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland Act 1971, and to the Rules, By- Laws and Regulations of the Association, in addition to the Special Regulations which appear in this schedule. Copies of the Rules and By-Laws may be obtained upon application to the Competitions Department. NOTICE TO INTENDING EXHIBITORS Entries can be made by accepting the invitation to display letter through contacting the Competition Coordinator by the due date in writing. PRIVACY STATEMENT You can be assured that the privacy of your personal information is of the utmost importance to us. The information provided by you in any application for membership or application to enter is used by the Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland (RNA) to offer member services or to organise and conduct competitions at the Royal Queensland Show. By applying for membership or entering such competitions you consent to provide such details as your name, address and exhibit details. Competition information may be made available to the media and included in RNA publications. Your information will not be disclosed without your consent for any other purpose unless required by the law. You may request access to your information and request that our records of that information be corrected by contacting our Privacy Officer (07) or by writing to the RNA, Locked Bag 1010, ALBION QLD WORKPLACE HEALTH AND SAFETY 1. The Brisbane Showgrounds are a designated Workplace within the meaning of the Workplace Health and Safety Act 2011 and exhibitors/competitors are required to ensure that they and all persons under their direction or control, including their contractors or sub-contractors, comply with all requirements of the Act and the RNA holds each exhibitor responsible to discharge its obligations to provide and maintain a safe place and system of work during occupation by the exhibitor/competitor of any area of the Brisbane Showgrounds. 2. Each exhibitor/competitor will assess the risk to themselves, staff, volunteers, family, other exhibitors, RNA staff, show visitors, children and any person foreseeably affected by the presentation of their exhibit. 3. Risks identified by exhibitors/competitors will be eliminated or controlled by the exhibitor/competitor and particular attention will be paid to ensuring public safety and safety of other exhibitors/competitors. 4. Exhibits will only be held and handled by competent persons whose experience is known to the exhibitor/ competitor. 5. A No Smoking Policy will be strictly adhered to and policed by exhibitors/competitors and exhibitors/ competitors are advised that the use of Primus stoves, any heating or lighting appliances of a like character, or any naked light, is strictly prohibited in the pavilions. 6. Any exhibitors/competitors intending to bring electrical equipment to the Showgrounds will be required to ensure that such equipment is fitted with residual current protection and that all electrical leads, tools and appliances have been inspected by a licensed electrical contractor and currently tagged. The use of double adaptors is prohibited and all power boards must also be tested and tagged 7. All exhibitors/competitors will comply with the requirements of the Act and its Regulations and Standards in every other respect. This is essential for the safety of all exhibitors/competitors and the general public. The Act imposes very severe penalties in the event of non-compliance with its provisions. Any exhibitors/competitors who do not comply will not be allowed to exhibit at the Royal Queensland Show. The RNA s Workplace Health & Safety statement can be located at: ALCOHOL The Brisbane Showgrounds is subject to a Special Facility License issued under the Liquor Act 1992 and strict laws related to the consumption and possession of liquor across the Brisbane Showgrounds site. The consumption or possession of liquor outside of the licensed bar areas is not authorised by the RNA and in many cases may be an offence for which on the spot fines can be issued by Police and Liquor Licensing Investigators. DISCIPLINARY COMMITTEE 132. If there is any inconsistency between By-laws and any other By-laws of the Association, By-laws will prevail. (Copies of the Rules and By-Laws may be obtained upon application to the Competitions Department.) Functions of the Disciplinary Committee 133. The functions of the Disciplinary Committee shall be to hear and determine all complaints, allegations and other matters relating to: (a) (b) (c) prohibited substances, as defined in these By-laws or Sectional Regulations. any alleged breach of the Rules, By-Laws and Regulations of the Association by an exhibitor and relating to an exhibit or to a competition, except if the alleged breach is of a kind that the Chairman of a Sectional Committee considers is of a less serious nature and should properly be dealt with by the Sectional Committee, and any other alleged breach of the Rules, By-Laws and Regulations of the Association that may be referred to the Disciplinary Committee pursuant to By-Law 137 (a). 6
