2 SECTION A : MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS (10 Marks) INSTRUCTION : Answer ALL questions. Passage 1 Read the passage and answer the following questions. Amazing Feats 1. The 2012 Summer Paralympic Games, which kicked off in London, began with a recreation of the Big Bang and astrophysicist, Stephen Hawking urging the 62,000 spectators, who needed little support to bite into apples during a later scene featuring Sir Isaac Newton s theories, to look up at the stars. Though the theme of science and discovery might seem too cerebral, it was more than appropriate, as we advance in prosthetics and wheelchair technology that have given the armless, amputees and paraplegics, unprecedented opportunities to compete and achieve amazing feats on the playing fields. Science was just as influential in giving birth to a sporting spectacle that has brought a record of 4,200 sportsmen and women representing 165 countries to take part in 20 sports that range from sailing to shooting and track and field to table tennis at the 14 th Paralympics. It was a neurosurgeon, Sir Ludwig Guttmann, who pioneered competitive sport as medical therapy when he organised an archery competition for 16 patients suffering from spinal cord injuries at Stoke Mandeville Hospital on the same day the 1948 Olympics opened in London. 2. Nevertheless, though technological devices and cutting-edge designs have helped them to go faster, higher and stronger, it is above all the exceptional ability to overcome overwhelming odds that has been the crucial factor for the startling sporting achievements. In this regard, whatever happens, the 23 Malaysians competing in eight sports are already winners as they have triumphed over adversity to represent the country. Of course, it would be great if they return home with medals as this can serve as an inspiration to others in similar situations. Page 2 of 13

3 3. However, in all honesty, many Malaysians do not know much about Paralympics, and do not really care. Few know that Malaysia has won medals at the Paralympics. Many would be hard-pressed to identify the Malaysian medal winners at previous Games, as they are hardly household names. If at all people care, it is to give these athletes a patronising pat on the back for their grit and determination. The uncomfortable truth is that disabled people enjoy fewer opportunities to get involved in sport in this country. They do not have adequate access to leisure activities and sports clubs. Indeed, people with disabilities face many barriers, which bar their access to buildings and buses, education and employment. It would be too much to expect the country s participation in the London Paralympics to radically remove the disabling impediments and attitudes. Hopefully, by displaying abilities rather than disabilities, it can contribute towards a better future for the disabled. (Adapted from: Amazing feats. Editorial. 5 Passage 2 Read the passage and answer the following questions. The Boy and the apple Tree 1 A long time ago, there was a huge apple tree. A little boy loved to come and play around it every day. He climbed to the treetop, ate the apples, and took a nap under the shade. He loved the tree and the tree loved to play with him. Time went by. The little boy had grown up and he no longer played around the tree every day. 2 One day, the boy came back to the tree and he looked sad. Come and play with me, The tree asked the boy. I am no longer a kid, I do not play around trees anymore, the boy replied. I want toys. I need money to buy them. Sorry, but I do not have money, but, you can pick all my apples and sell them. So, you will have money. The boy was so delighted. He grabbed all the apples on the tree and left happily. The boy never came back after he picked the apples. The tree was deeply saddened. 3 One day, the boy who now turned into a man returned and the tree was excited. Come and play with me! the tree said. I do not have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for shelter. Can you help me? Sorry, but I do not have any house. But you can chop off my branches to build your house. Therefore, the man cut all the branches of the tree and left happily. The tree was glad to see him happy, but the man never came back since then. The tree was again lonely and upset. 4 One hot summer day, the man returned and the tree was delighted. Come and play with me! the tree said. I am getting old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat? said the man. Use my trunk to build your boat. You can sail far away and be happy. So the man cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and never showed up for a long time. Page 5 of 13

6 5 Finally, the man returned after many years. Sorry, my boy. But I do not have anything for you anymore. No more apples for you, the tree said. No problem, I do not have any teeth to bite, the man replied. No more trunk for you to climb on. I am too old for that now, the man said. I really cannot give you anything. The only thing left is my dying roots, the tree said with tears. I do not need much now, just a place to rest. I am tired after all these years, the man replied. Good! Old tree roots are the best place to lean on and rest! Come, come sit down with me and rest. The man sat down and the tree was glad and smiled with tears. 6 This is a story for everyone. The tree is like our parents. When we were young, we loved to play with our Mum and Dad When we grow up, we leave them. We go to them when we need something or when we are in trouble. No matter what, parents will always be there and give everything they can just to make us happy. You may think the boy is cruel to the tree, but that might depict all of us treating our parents as well as our forests. We take them for granted. We do not appreciate all their deeds for us until it is too late. Love our parents and forests, before it is too late. Circle the correct answer. 1.
