Drip Torch The drip torch is a firing device used in wildland and prescribed fire activities. The torch contains a mixture gasoline and diesel fuel typically at a mixture of 3-4 parts diesel to1part gasoline. Common problems associated with drip torch safety involve the use of improperly mixed fuel, 8&rlz=1T4SUNA_enUS267US267&q=drip+torch+safey&safe=active, and transportation of torch in field environment, Things to Do: Always participate or conduct an operational safety briefing prior to project initiation with all personnel. Always follow Risk Analysis or Job Hazard Analysis protocol established. Ensure personnel understand protocol for burn emergencies. Inspect fuel for proper mixture (should be marked with tag on container) Always wear Personal Protective Equipment and use as directed by manufacturer s guidelines: o Eye Protection o Appropriate hand protection with gloves o Nomex clothing with sleeves rolled down Things to Remember Always mix fuel to mixture as determined in JHA/RA. Always carry drip torch upright when not in use. Keep drip torch away from your body, and clothing at all times. Extinguish torch when walking long distances. Information on the handling, transportation, and storage of fuel can be found in the Interagency Transportation Guide for Gasoline, Mixed Gas, Drip Torch Fuel, and Diesel,

Fusee The fusee is the most commonly used firing device used in wildland and prescribed fire environment. Fusee s are lightweight, and can be carried by firefighters in large numbers. Significant effects from the use of fusees include burns on skin and clothing, irritation to eyes, nose and respiratory system. For more information refer to or create a Risk Analysis or Job Hazard Analysis to discuss transportation, handling, emergency protocol, and storage of fusee in your specific field environment. Safety Tips: Keep fusee away from other ignition sources This product should only be used outdoors Inspect fusee prior to use for cracks, leaking, and moisture Maintain 8-10 spacing when firing with fusee Always wear PPE including gloves, eye protection with sleeves down Things to Remember Always point fusee away from face and body while lighting and in use. Watch out for molten flecks spraying from end of fusee during use. Use fusee s with an extension (refer to picture). Discard used fusee in black when completed. Always conduct an operational safety briefing prior to use For more information on handling and safety refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet at:

INCENDIARY FLARES Commercial incendiary flare products available typically fall into 2 categories: hand thrown, and launcher. These devices are used in backfiring and burnout during wildland fire and prescribed fire operations. Firing products available are designed for a specific purpose and use. Proper procedures and protocol must be followed to minimize risk of injury to operator, and adjacent personnel. Refer to specific safety protocol from the manufacturer Flares can be thrown by hand and mechanically launched with a firing device. Only use flares for their intended use. Never use a hand thrown flare in a tool designed to launch flares. Always refer to Manufacturer product specifications prior to use. Hand thrown flares have a fuse that delays ignition for seconds to allow user to dispense flare to designated area prior to ignition. Following ignition the flare sprays material 5 or greater for 5-10 seconds at a temperature of 4000º F. HAND LIGHTING The flare may be lit and then thrown, or may be placed in position and then lit. Use of all PPE as per Red/Blue Book standards are required. Remove the cap from the flare. You only need to remove enough of the cap to expose the gray igniter cord.

Extend the gray igniter cord completely from the flare. Avoid tugging the cord or crimping the cord when extending. Damaged cord may fail to ignite the flare. Allow a minimum 15-foot (4.5 m) safety zone from flare ignition point. When lighting the flare, position the open end of the flare away from yourself and others. Fuse delay is approximately 15 seconds, but variances are possible. When throwing the flare, determine desired destination of flare before lighting. Once flare is thrown, move immediately at least 20 from the flare for safety. LAUNCHER SYSTEMS Launchers use projectiles and a 22-caliber industrial firing load to propel flare. Only individuals who have received training on safety, loading, firing, and field failures of projectiles should use the launcher system. Refer to Manufacturer s recommendations for projectiles, and firing loads to use in firing device. Flare Launchers are projectile firing devices which are similar to firearms. Only use projectiles specifically designed for the Launcher. Refer to Manufacturer specifications for current accepted projectiles

FIRING CARTRIDGES An Industrial Load is used for igniting and propelling the launch capable flares. Refer to Manufacturer s recommend cartridges for optimal performance and safety. All hand firing operations should follow all agency specific protocol for firing devices, safety, and policy. Always remember to: Conduct or participate in an operational safety briefing prior to firing operation Understand protocol for medical emergencies Always wear PPE as recommended by agency and manufacturer s specifications Inspect firing devices for defects
