Mountain Meisters Sorting & Scoring 2017 Ray S. Gilmore III Sean Doucette Doug MacDonald
The Survey Says. Make the Scoring System Simple & easy (9) Drop Races (5) Ability to Move Down in Divisions (4) Eliminate Sandbagging (4) Improve Communications (4) Use NASTAR to Split out Divisions Further (4) Cap the team size (1)
.Our Response. We have automated the sorting and scoring process to make it consistent and fair for every racer, every week. We are using an average of your finish results to sort you into active divisions where you can challenge yourself to become a better skier. We have maintained the look and feel of the Team Scoring System that we have grown accustomed to, and by automating the process we are now able to drop your worst scores and your teams worst scores, because we know that...life Happens
DIVISION SORTING
Division Sorting Problems Inconsistency & Accuracy in Current Sorting Process because divisions were established by averaging participant s race times. No two courses are ever the same, by using average time, the variance in the results can be very high due to natural and manmade causes. If a racer falls, makes a mistake or misses the fast week, then that racers average can be much slower, and the racer will be under ranked If a racer has a good day on the fast day, then that racer can be over ranked, because of a single fast run. There is no mechanism to move down in divisions.
Division Sorting Goals Improved Accuracy Will result in less complaints about being in the wrong division. Improved Precision The time differential within each division, between 1 st and 15 th should narrow So simple, that nobody can misunderstand it
Sorting - Improvements Do not use Time as the universal metric to sort divisions. Divisions are active, not fixed They are reconfirmed every race. The sorting is based off of an average of your finish results, weighted by the size of the field each race.. Racer Average Score
Racer Average Score Racer Average Score: We drop your DNF/DNS/DSQ, then average your Best Race Scores each week to determine which division you are in, prior to awarding points for that week. Race Scores: Placing 50th in a race of 50 racers is not the same as 50th among 100 racers; so we are weighting your results based off of the total number of racers each day A race score is the racer's rank divided by the number of valid starts; then mapped to a range of is assigned to the fastest racer, 51 the slowest racer. Number of racers is divided into two groups, male and female. Groups consists of all skier types (i.e. AST) Score = (100 - (49 * ((rank-1) / (num_racers-1)))
15 Points for 1 st in a Division 15 People Per Division TEAM SCORING
Team Scoring - Improvements There were no suggestions directed at the team scoring processes Best 8 finishers from each team count each week.*** Team size is capped at 13.*** It will almost look unchanged in the paper. 15 points for first, 1 pt for 15 th in each division. DNS = 0 team points DNF/DSQ = points for every DNS you beat in your division***
Example of a DNF/DSQ Scoring Previously, a DNF/DSQ = 1 Team Point This Year, DNF/DSQ = 1 Point for every DNS that you beat in your Division.
Team Scoring Goals Narrow the gap between the 1 st place team and last place team Increase the competition within the league by narrowing the point differential between teams.

INDIVIDUAL SCORING
Individual Scoring Problems Sandbagging Either by choice or misfortune, a percentage of racers Sandbag every year. The Ability to carry your points up and win a division, without ever beating anyone in that division is a point of contention for some This spoils the Hard Fun for a number of racers. There was no mechanism to move down, when others improved. Lots of divisions would become over crowded
Individual Scoring - Improvements Division Winners = Highest Season Average Score in each division Average of your Race Scores, including DNF, DNS, DSQ. Mountain Meisters will still Look and feel the same for the team scoring, while returning some integrity to the individual awards. Dropping the worst two results for each individual, we are giving them an option to skip a day if needed. Life Happens. We know that the racers have commitments other than World Cup Wednesday s. There are conditions, that some guests do not feel safe driving in, or racing in. Safety First.
The Moment that everyone has been waiting for!! What will the results look like?
Race Day Column Descriptions (items with a *** are new in 2017.)
