1 203 SEASON PREVIEW 36 It was an offseason of change. For Louisiana Tech, not much has remained the same since the team s last game on Nov. 24, 202. In the interim the program lost 32 seniors, nine of coaches including former head coach Sonny Dykes, left the Western Athletic Conference for Conference USA and signed a top-flight recruiting class. No big deal, right? But the train kept rolling as Skip Holtz was hired as the University s 33rd head football coach last December and quickly assembled an impressive staff of assistant coaches. That staff, which included retaining Stan Eggen and Jeff Koonz, hit the ground running and held together a talented recruiting class that came to fruition. After a series of 5 practices throughout March and April culminating in the T-Day Spring Game, we arrive at the beginning of fall camp with many questions, few answers and plenty of anticipation. Offense While most of the offense s starters were lost to graduation, a 202 Freshman All-America running back in Kenneth Dixon returns after a rookie campaign where he broke three NCAA records held by Marshall Faulk. Dixon broke into the record books as he led the nation in scoring with 68 points that included an NCAA Freshman record 27 rushing touchdowns. Assisting Dixon in the backfield will be the return of Tevin King, the team s starting running back in 202 before a knee injury prematurely ended his season at Illinois on Sept. 22. The question on King is will he be fully recovered from the injury and back into same form where he ran for 369 yards on 46 attempts in four games. Walk-ons Brandon Davis and Marlon Seets also are available to spell Dixon and King with Hunter Lee and Lyle Fitte both former running backs able to move back into the back field if needed. The question of whether Dixon or anyone else can run the ball effectively lies up front with the offensive line, where four out of five starters must be replaced. The only holdover, Matt Shepperd, sat out spring practice after back surgery leading to many questions during the spring. Another player with game experience, Jeremy Graffree, returns from a year off after an Achilles injury and is expected to contribute heavily. Larry Banks also gained game experience last season and will be relied upon. Several 203 signees are expected to step into pivotal roles including Navarro Junior College product Mitchell Bell and Georgia Military College product Tre Carter. Both join the Bulldogs from the junior college ranks and bring a little maturity and experience. Richard Greenwalt sat out the 202 season and has become stronger over the past year after joining his brother on the Tech roster while Alec Davis will have the challenging task of replacing Stephen Warner at center after serving as his back-up last season. LA Tech lost both of its starters at the outside receiver position with Quinton Patton and Myles White heading to the NFL and now the team looks to replace as best it can the combined 2,0 receiving yards that duo produced last season. D.J. Banks will attempt to lead the outside receivers as one of a handful of seniors on this year s squad while LSU transfer Paul Turner is expected to start in place of Patton if the NCAA rules him eligible this season, waiving the one-year waiting period. Richie Casey, who is hoping to get a medical sixth year from the NCAA this fall, will be another option to replace Patton. Back on the other side with Banks, redshirt freshman Jaydrick DeClouette is ready for action. The Patterson, La. native spent his true freshman year gaining weight and experience, being mentored by the venerable Patton. On the inside, the H position is filled with experience as Hunter Lee, Andrew Guillot and Lyle Fitte are all expected to see action there. Guillot, like Casey, is awaiting a final determination from the NCAA regarding a medical sixth year and is hopeful for a positive outcome. All three have plenty of game experience for the Bulldogs. At the Y position, Jon Greenwalt quietly tallied 20 yards receiving on 24 catches with two touchdowns last season and should improve those numbers as he becomes more relied upon. He shined in the T-Day Spring Game at the conclusion of spring practice. Another tall California receiver like Greenwalt, Scott Cathcart has the opportunity to step up in the Y position in spelling Greenwalt during games. The battle for getting the ball to the receivers will continue into fall camp as Scotty Young and Ryan Higgins vie to replace Colby Cameron, the 202 Sammy Baugh Award winner. Young ended spring practice with a half-step ahead of Higgins but the competition will begin anew when the first practice of camp starts on Aug. 5. Defense The defensive line is the most experienced unit returning in 203, a title that is easy to claim with so many seniors lost from last year s squad. In fact this unit only lost one player from last year s team and should anchor Kim Dameron s defense in the fall. The tackles return a respectable amount of skill with Shakeil Lucas and Justin Ellis leading the charge while Vernon Butler gained valuable experience as a freshman last season and is expected to take a large step forward this fall. DeAngelo Brooks, a Shreveport native that came to Tech by way of a junior college, has the opportunity to make an immediate

2 impact as defensive line coach Stan Eggen prefers to roll his players in and out quickly to keep speed and athleticism at its peak on the field. At defensive end, IK Enemkpali was a 202 First Team All-WAC selection and enters the fall as a Rotary Lombardi Award watch lister. He led the team in tackles for a loss (7.5-49) and sacks (6.0-46) last season and could expand on that this fall. A mixture of Kevin Kisseberth and Andre Taylor should back him up, both of whom gained experience last fall. Kendrick James should start on the other side with Vontarrius Dora challenging him for playing time. Dora got most of the starts last year with James academically ineligible for the first 0 games but then sustained a shoulder injury as James returned. Both James and Dora bring plenty of experience, athleticism and speed to the position. After the front four comes little experience with the most being in the secondary. Le Vander Liggins played most of last year at cornerback while Bryson Abraham should start on the other side with Adairius Barnes challenging him for playing time. All three registered plenty of playing time in 202. Kentrell Brice and Kendall Hayes should battle each other at strong safety but neither has played the position much in live action. Both players gained quality reps on special teams last season and worked at the position through spring practice. There is a bigger question at free safety as Lloyd Grogan could be the starter but has never played in a collegiate game. Meanwhile C.J. Cleveland will back him up bringing some game experience at the junior college level. The final position in the secondary could be a nickel back but could also transform into a third linebacker if the team needs to be in a 4-3 formation. At nickel, Jabari Prewitt ended spring practice as the choice but that position battle will be reopened with an influx of newcomers this fall. At linebacker, two junior college transfers that were in Ruston for spring practice currently lead the way. Nick Thomason is slated to start at the MIKE linebacker position with Mike Schrang continuing to improve in his transition from safety. At the WILL linebacker, Mitch Villemez impressed during spring practice and leap-frogged Beau Fitte for a starting spot but that is another battle that will be renewed once fall practice starts. Special Teams On special teams, how do you replace punter Ryan Allen? No player at the FBS level has been as dominant at his position as Ryan Allen was punting the ball over the last two seasons. Allen became the first player ever to win back-to-back Ray Guy Awards and rightfully so as he put up numbers that even video games can t conjure up. Freshman Logan McPherson will get the task of punting the ball this fall as he joins the program from Fort Payne, Ala. No pressure. At kicker, Jonathan Barnes is another freshman entering the special teams field and he is expected to replace the consistent Matt Nelson. A highly touted kicker out of high school, Barnes set his school s career field goal record and joins a school that has quietly produced some of the best NFL kickers of the last two decades in Matt Stover, Chris Boniol and Josh Scobee. D.J. Banks, a 203 Paul Hornung Award Watch List honoree, is expected to return kicks and punts this season after setting a single-season record for kickoff return yards last year. He had one return for a touchdown in 202 marking the seventh-consecutive season a Bulldog has returned a punt or kickoff for a touchdown. Josh Cuthbert, so far infallible in his position, returns as the team s deep snapper for his redshirt senior season. Schedule As many unknowns as there are in the depth chart, there are just as many facing the 203 schedule. LA Tech only faces two teams in 203 that it faced in 202: Rice and UTSA, the latter of which was a Western Athletic Conference opponent last season. LA Tech opens the season at NC State on Aug. 3, another team that is going through a coaching transition, before returning home to host two games in less than seven days with Lamar (Sept. 7) and Tulane (Sept. 2) visiting Joe Aillet Stadium. The latter of which will be LA Tech s annual RED OUT game and will be televised on Fox Sports (FS) to a national audience. The Bulldogs take on Kansas on Sept. 2 before heading to Dallas to play in the historic Cotton Bowl against Army in the Heart of Dallas Classic. The Conference USA schedule then begins in full force with seven consecutive league games starting with playing at UTEP on Oct. 5. Homecoming is set for Oct. 9 as the Bulldogs host the Mean Green of North Texas before heading to Miami on Oct. 26 to play FIU. A Rivalry in Dixie is renewed once again on Nov. 9 as LA Tech plays host to Southern Miss before traveling to Houston to face Rice on Nov. 6. Last year s league and West Division Champion Tulsa visits Joe Aillet Stadium on Nov. 23 in the final home game of the year and the Bulldogs will wrap up the regular season on Nov. 30 at UTSA.
