Servant Leadership...complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Philippians 2: 2-4 Servant leadership is service to others. It is not jockeying for position, or politicking for power. Instead, it is posturing for the opportunity to serve. This does not bode well for the insecure in need of abundant attention. Servant leaders avoid the limelight and serve in ways that many times go unnoticed. It is the little things that make a servant leader. No task is too menial for the servant leader, but there is something bigger than behavior that distinguishes a servant leader. It is attitude, an attitude of how to make others successful. Self-service on the other hand builds a culture of mediocrity. It is all about taking care of me and my desires, and not giving thought to the needs of other team members. It is every man for himself survival of the fittest. This self-service contributes to a scarcity mentality. If I serve you then you may look better than me you may get all the credit. This fear of not being noticed facilitates competition instead of cooperation. Servant leadership is not caught up with getting the credit. The servant leader has put to death the need for self-recognition. The attention and credit can easily flow to others. Servant leaders resist the temptation to linger in the limelight. Instead, the servant leader may give away opportunities that come his way. Seek to serve, and let status find you. Jesus served quietly on most occasions and boldly as needed. His motive was to serve for the glory of God. His ultimate sacrifice was laying down His life for the human race. As followers of Jesus, let s put aside all selfishness and seek to bring glory and honor to our Lord by how we compassionately love and humbly serve others.
Cougar Basketball Attitude 1. Compete hard and give your best effort (No excuses) 2. 11 Program Culture Create a great culture = culture drives behavior, behavior drives habits Culture beats strategy all day long We know what we stand for and what we accept Core values: have a firm understanding of who we are Compete: be competitive in every facet this defines us as a team and each individual player Punctuality: be on time Toughness: be consistent every day we control our physical and mental preparation Selflessness: sacrifice for the greater good of the team the team always comes first Leadership: older players teach younger players our culture and how we approach things Character: be a man of great character and conviction Details: we do things a certain way for a reason Relationships: we play a sport we love, with teammates we love, for a God we love Live and Play to the Standard
1. Spiritual Development Live and Play to the Standard Team Devotions discussion involving relevant Christ-like traits and passages of scripture Natural Opportunities basketball provides opportunities for teaching and encouragement in obeying Christ and being His witness through our words and actions on and off the court Service Initiatives serve each other, CCA, our families, and our community 2. Academic Development Great Effort Students are expected to give their best effort in each class Classroom Behavior Students are expected to come to class prepared with homework completed, to be active participants, to be respectful to teachers and classmates, and to be conscientious learners Teacher Relationships and Communication students are expected to meet with teachers regularly, especially if they are having trouble, and to communicate to teachers ahead of time if missing a class for a game Grade Checks coaches will check grades and communicate to players on a regular basis 3. Social Development Leaders on Campus students are expected to be leaders on campus through words and actions Campus Involvement students expected to be involved in other campus activities and support fellow athletic teams, etc. 4. Athletic Development Strength and Speed Training students expected to participate in off-season and summer strength and speed training Skill Development students encouraged to work on shooting and ballhandling consistently throughout off-season and summer become gym rats
5 Characteristics of Successful Players 1. Commitment Don t be lukewarm put your whole self in Be Passionate about what you do Be committed to becoming the best you can be skill development = confidence 2. Toughness (physical and mental) Be mentally tough on and off the court nothing rattles you water off a duck s back Those who work the hardest surrender last Be willing to sacrifice your body (take charges, dive for loose balls) 3. Communication (On and off the floor) Listening vs. hearing (listen with your eyes, ears, mind, and heart) Communicate effectively with teammates and coaches Great players crave hard instruction and coaching 4. Leadership You have to serve before you can lead (servant leader) - put others ahead of yourself Lead by example Be an encourager to teammates, consistently giving verbal and nonverbal (touches) encouragement 5. Goal-Oriented Determine what you want, find out how much it will cost, decide if you re willing to pay the price Must have persistence to follow through with set goals (be a finisher)
Cougar Basketball Philosophy Christ Exalting: As individual players, coaches, fans, and corporately as a team and school, we want to honor and exalt our Lord Jesus Christ through everything we say and do both on and off the court. We desire to show honor and respect to our opponents, the officials, and the fans. When people see us play, we want them to say, there s something different about that team. We re not perfect and sometimes we fail in this regard, but thankfully we serve a God who is patient, merciful, and forgiving. Teamwork/Family: We seek to play as a team with good ball movement and with guys being willing to make the extra pass to a teammate who has a better shot. We want to play great team defense as well with players having each other s backs and bringing help when necessary. We re not just a team, we re a family. That s the type of unity we want. The team is first and the individual is second. There is no place for selfishness, egotism, or envy on our team. We re all pulling for each other for the common goals of glorifying Christ and winning basketball games. Compete: We want a family of fighters willing to lay it all on the line when they step on the court by hustling, taking charges, diving for loose balls, battling for rebounds, etc. We expect each player s absolute best effort each possession of each game, as well as in practices. We will fear no opponent, but respect every opponent. We will play hard and fair and play to win. We want our players to believe they will win each and every game, and that they will outsmart and outfight the opposing team. Others may be bigger, faster, and have more talent than us, but no one should ever be superior in determination and character. Fundamentals: The fundamentals of ball-handling, shooting, passing, defense, etc. are vital to the success of any team. Fundamentals must be ground in through constant repetition, and each player is strongly encouraged to hone these skills outside of practice on their own by getting in the gym and being a gym rat. Basketball is not a game of thinking it is a game of reaction. Therefore, the fundamentals must be drilled until they are a common quick reaction. Play Great Defense: Many things, like shooting, in a basketball game can be inconsistent or off. One thing we should always count on to keep us in every game is great defense. A great defensive player works harder and with more intensity than others. He understands proper defensive position and angles, and thinks one step ahead of the offense. Great defense takes heart, grit, determination, and toughness. Defense wins championships!
Rebounding: The war on the boards is crucial to the outcome of every game. We want to outrebound each opponent. We do this by limiting them to one shot, and by getting additional shots ourselves with offensive rebounds. Position and desire are more important than height. If you really want the rebound, you ll fight hard for good position every time the ball is in the air, and then battle for the ball. If you do this, you can be a great rebounder. Offense: We want to fast break on every possession! We will commit to outrunning our opponent each trip down the floor and put ourselves in position to get easy scoring opportunities as a result. It s easier to score against 1, 2, or 3 defenders than against 5. If we don t score in transition, we run a motion offense predicated on ball movement, cutting, screening, and attacking. Practices: The practice is a learning tool in which the game is broken down with drills and fundamentals repeated until they are a common reaction. The drills must be quick and intense seldom lasting longer than 5-10 minutes. We expect our players to practice with great intensity, hustle, and focus. We expect our players to shift from drill to drill very quickly. This will be demanded until it becomes an automatic reaction. The way you practice will determine the way you play and the success of your season. Playing Time: At the varsity level, only the top 8-10 players should expect to play most games. Of those 8-10, the players who the coaches feel give the team the best opportunity to win the game will receive the vast majority of the playing time. We will always attempt to get as many players as possible into the game, but our primary concern is to win, not to get every player court time. With that being said, every players is important to our team and family, no matter their role on the team! Players Roles: Within our team each player will have a certain role or roles. Your role may be the scorer, the defender, the rebounder, the playmaker, the sparkplug off the bench, or the guy who encourages his teammates from the end of the bench. Whatever your role, you are vital to our success and important to our program! The better our team bonds together, the more successful our team will be. Know and accept your role, and help unite our team.
