The Commodores are led by senior forward Tiffany Clarke. The Duluth, Ga., native is averaging 15.1 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, both team highs. Most recently, she scored 22 against Hartford while becoming the 34th player in Vanderbilt history to reach 1,000 career points Joining Clarke in double-figures are Christina Foggie and Jasmine Lister. Foggie is posting 14.5 points per game on the season, while Lister is contributing Lister also adds 5.4 assists per game, a mark that ranks second in the SEC. Most likely joining Clarke, Foggie and Lister in the starting lineup are Elan Brown and Kady Schrann. The always steady Brown is posting 7.0 points and 6.1 rebounds per game, while adding a team best 17 steals. Schrann is coming off a 10-point performance against Hartford and is averaging 7.0 points and 2.4 assists per outing. SCOUTING THE SOONERS No. 12/13 Oklahoma entertains Vanderbilt with an 8-1 record, despite having lost four players to season-ending injuries. The Sooners are coming off a win over Marist, but in the contest lost senior guard Whitney Hand to a torn ACL. OU had already lost post players Kaylon Williams (achilles), Lydnsey Cloman (back) and Maddie Manning (ACL) for the year. Look for the guard-combo of Morgan Hook and Aaryn Ellenberg to lead the Sooners. Ellenberg is posting 15.8 points and 3.0 rebounds per game, while Hook is averaging 11.2 points and 3.2 assists per game. Center Nicole Griffin will also be a factor. The junior is posting 11.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. Joanna McFarland leads the team with 7.3 rebounds per outing. 17th-year Head Coach Sheri Coale will look to overcome the injuries and led her active roster of eight players to a 14th-consecutive NCAA Tournament. THE SERIES - VANDERBILT VS. OKLAHOMA This is the third meeting between the two traditional women s basketball powers. The first came in the 1986 NCAA Tournament, when OU took an victory in Norman. The teams did not meet again until the championship game of last year s Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament, with the Commodores taking a decision over the 12th-ranked Sooners. Jasmine Lister and Christina Foggie led the way for Vanderbilt, scoring 24 and 21 points, respectively. ON DECK - COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON Vanderbilt will take the week off before hosting the College of Charleston on Saturday, December 22. Tipoff at Memorial Gym is set for 2:00 p.m. The contest is part of the December Five Dollar Days, with all tickets costing just $5. It will also be the annual Teddy Bear Toss. Fans are asked to bring a new Teddy Bear to toss on the floor at halftime and be donated to the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots program. LAST TIME OUT Tiffany Clarke recorded her first double-double of the season to lead Vanderbilt past Hartford, on Thursday night at Memorial Gym. Clarke scored 12 of her 22 points in the second half to help Vanderbilt (7-3) put away Hartford (6-2) for good. Clarke led all players with 22 points and 12 rebounds, which was her first double-double of the season and 13th of her career. Late in the first half, Clarke also became the 34th player to reach 1,000 career points for the Commodores. She is now tied for 31st (Rhonda Blades) all-time with 1,017 career points. The Duluth, Ga., native shot an efficient 7-of-10 from the field and 8-of-10 from the free throw line. She also tied a career-high with four blocked shots. Kady Schrann was the only other Commodore in double-figures as she finished with 10 points. Jasmine Lister added nine points and a game-high five assists. Elan Brown and Gabby Smith each scored eight points. Christina Foggie tied a career-high with four steals. Vandy outrebounded Hartford, for the game. Vanderbilt led by as many as 24 points in the second half to run away from the Hawks. Hartford s Alex Hall scored 10 points to lead the Hawks, while Amber Bepko added eight points and a team-high six rebounds. Vanderbilt used a 13-0 run midway through the first half to take a 17-8 lead. The Commodores held Hartford scoreless for nearly six minutes during the run and would extend their lead to as many as 13 in the first half. Behind 10 points and eight rebounds from Clarke, the Commodores led at the half. Clarke was the lone player in double-figures after one half of play. Brown had six points, while Lister chipped in five points and two assists. Both teams struggled shooting the ball in the first half, as Vanderbilt shot 40 percent (13-of-32) from the field, 16 percent (1-of-6) from behind the three-point line and only 37 percent (3-of-8) from the free throw line. Hartford shot 26 percent (6-of-23) from the field and 30 percent (3-of-10) from three-point range. CLARKE HITS 1,000 With 22 points against Hartford last week, senior forward Tiffany Clarke became the 34 player in Vanderbilt history with 1,000 career points. The Duluth, Ga., native now has 1,017 points, tied for 34th all-time with Rhonda Blades. Clarke could be the first of three Vanderbilt player to hit the milestone this season, with Christina Foggie at 908 points and Jasmine Lister at 906 points. COMMODORES VS. TOP 25 This is the first contest against a top-25 team for Vanderbilt this season. (No. 17/16 Dayton was unranked when it defeated Vanderbilt). The Commodores went 3-5 against the top-25 last year. The three wins came against No. 12 Oklahoma, No. 17 Georgia and No. 11 Tennessee, all at Memorial Gym. As of this week s poll, the Oklahoma game will be the first of eight against ranked teams. SHUTTING THEM DOWN In Vanderbilt s win over Austin Peay, second half defense was the big difference maker. The Commodores held the Lady Govs to nine points in the period, including 3-28 from the field and 1-10 from three-point range. The nine points marked the lowest output in a half for a Vanderbilt opponent since November 22, On that date, the Commodores held Alabama A&M to eight first half points en route to an win. In addition, Vanderbilt held the Lady Govs to just from the field, good for 23.2%. That marks the lowest field goal percentage for an opponent since December 21, 2008, when UT Martin was held to 17.6% (9-51) from the field in an Commodore victory. MIXING IT UP Through just 10 games this season, Head Coach Melanie Balcomb has used four different starting lineups. By contrast, last year Balcomb used five different starting fives and did not change the starting lineup at all until the 16th game of the season. Against Hartford, the Commodores returned to their opening day lineup of Kady Schrann, Christina Foggie, Jasmine Lister, Elan Brown and Tiffany Clarke. Vanderbilt is 5-1 with that lineup this season. CLARKE IS SHOOTING FOR THE STARS Senior forward Tiffany Clarke has connected for 56 field goals on 92 attempts this season, good for a.609 shooting percentage which is second in the Southeastern Conference. In addition, that mark is ninth in the nation (as of Dec. 9). Off that shooting, Clarke is averaging 15.1 points per outing this season, tops on the team and sixth in the league. STARTING TO DEFEND Two Vanderbilt players who found themselves atop statistical categories in the SEC last year are off to a solid start this year. The junior is a First Team Preseason All-SEC honoree and has been named to watch lists for the Wooden Award and Wade Trophy. Jasmine Lister led the conference with 5.5 assists last season and already has two double-digit assist performances this season, 10 versus McNeese State and 11 at Western Kentucky. Lister s 5.4 assists per game this season rank second in the Southeastern Conference. STARTING THEM EARLY Head Coach Melanie Balcomb has always shown a willingness to play freshmen early if they earn the minutes. Freshman forwards Kendall Shaw and Heather Bowe have seen action in most of Vanderbilt s games this season (all 10 for Bowe, 10 of 11 for Shaw), with Bowe starting two contests in Puerto Rico. Bowe is posting 4.3 points and 4.1 rebounds. Shaw has contributed 3.6 points and 2.7 boards. The rookie duo became even more important with the loss of center Stephanie Holzer for the season, as they will be trying to replace Holzer s 11.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. The rookie tandem is holding its own, posting 7.9 points and 6.8 rebounds, combined. BATEY BREAKS OUT Freshman guard Morgan Batey had a pair of breakout performances against Austin Peay and Tennessee Tech. The Atlanta native had her first career double-figure performance against the Lady Govs on Wednesday, scoring 11 points on 3-4 shooting and 2-2 from three-point range. She added four rebounds in the game. Batey followed-up that performance with nine points in the win over Tennessee Tech. JENKINS IN THE FIELD Freshman guard Jasmine Jenkins has been a solid contributor for the Commodores this season, but had a rather interesting start. Though she scored 13 points over the first seven games, it took until the Tennessee Tech game on Saturday to finally connect from the field. Jenkins missed her first nine attempts from the field, while going from the line. She was 1-3 from the field against TTU, making a three while going 1-2 from the line, for four points. She also grabbed four rebounds in the game. For the season, Jenkins is posting 2.1 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists per contest. CLARKE S GOT CLASS Senior forward Tiffany Clarke is one of 30 players nationwide nominated for the Senior CLASS Award. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athelte and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. The candidate classes will be narrowed to 10 men s and 10 women s finalists midway through the regular season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one men s finalist and one women s finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. Two more players will have a shot at joining the 1,000 point club if they can replicate their scoring totals from the season. Tiffany Clarke already has and stands 31st all time with 1,017 points. Right behind her are Christina Foggie (908 points) and Jasmine Lister (906 points). The next player to reach 1,000 will be come the 35th player in Vanderbilt history to reach the mark. FEW AND FAR BETWEEN After the Commodores snapped a three-game losing streak against Austin Peay, it is important to note such streaks under Melanie Balcomb have been few and far between. On just four occasions in her 10-plus seasons in Nashville have the Commodores lost three or more consecutive outings. The most recent instance came last year, when they lost at Tennessee, at Arkansas and to South Carolina in overtime. That team went on to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Prior to that, Vanderbilt had not lost three-in-a-row since They also dropped three straight in , with that team going on to the Sweet 16. The longest losing streak came in , when the Commodores dropped four-straight games in February before advancing to the Sweet 16. A NEW WAY TO GIVE THANKS For the first time since , Vanderbilt did not host a Thanksgiving Tournament at Memorial Gym. Instead, the Commodores will head to the San Juan Shootout in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to take on Virginia and Florida State. It marks the first time since there will not be an in-season tournament at Memorial Gym. HOLZER OUT FOR SEASON While the Commodores did win their exhibition game against Alabama- Huntsville, 81-53, they did suffer a pretty big loss. Redshirt junior center Stephanie Holzer will miss the entire campaign after suffering a dislocated knee just 11 minutes into the contest. Holzer has led the Commodores in rebounds each of the last two seasons, was SEC Sixth Woman of the Year in and was Honorable Mention All-SEC last season. Holzer redshirted as a freshman in after breaking her ankle in a preseason work out. BRING EM BACK With 10 of 11 players returning from last year s 23-win squad, Vanderbilt brings back 97.6% of its scoring. THAT WOULD MAKE A BAKER S DOZEN Vanderbilt is one of eight programs to have made the last 13 NCAA Tournaments. The Commodores are joined by Connecticut, Duke, Georgia, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Stanford and Tennessee as the only programs to have earned bids each of the last 13 seasons. FOGGIE WINS SEC SCORING TITLE For the first time since 1991, Vanderbilt boasted the top scorer in the Southeastern Conference. Sophomore guard Christina Foggie led the league with 17.9 points per game at the conclusion of the regular season, as well as a conference-best 18.0 points per contest during SEC games. Foggie received WBCA All-Region honors and was a First Team All-SEC selection by the league s coaches and the Associated Press. She had point performances on the season and led Vanderbilt in scoring during 16 contests on the season. The highlights included a career-high 34 points in a upset of No. 17/15 Georgia and 22 points in a win over No. 11/11 Tennessee. Foggie became just the second Vanderbilt player to win the SEC scoring title, joining Wendy Scholtens, who won three league scoring titles (1989, 90 and 91). VANDERBILT IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT Vanderbilt made its 25th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and 13th-consecutive. All-time, Vanderbilt is in NCAA play, following a first round win over Middle Tennessee and a second round loss to Duke. It marked the 11th time in 12 seasons the Commodores won at least one game in the Tournament. Vanderbilt has made 14 Sweet 16 appearances, including six over the last 11 seasons (last in 2009). The last Elite Eight trip came in 2002, while Vanderbilt s lone Final Four appearance was in In first and second round contests, Vanderbilt is 32-11, while it is 16-2 in opening round games since the NCAA expanded the field to 64 teams in VANDERBILT ATHLETICS UNMATCHED PAST TWO YEARS With Vanderbilt s invitation to the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl, the school concluded its second straight calendar year in which its baseball and men s and women s basketball teams played in the NCAA Tournament and its football team was invited to a bowl. In 2011, there were eight schools that accomplished this feat, and in 2012 there were just six. Vanderbilt is the only school to do it two years in a row. It marked the 13th-consecutive 20-win season for Vanderbilt, the 26th in program history and the 20th in the last 21 seasons. HOME COOKING In addition to a 4-0 start this year, Vanderbilt went 18-2 at Memorial Gym last season, including a 10-0 mark during the non-conference portion of the schedule. It marked the second consecutive season Vanderbilt went undefeated at home during non-conference play, while they extended that streak to 12 straight to open the season. The lone regular season loss was a overtime defeat by South Carolina, with the second coming to No. 6/6 Duke in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Along the way, Vanderbilt defeated three top-20 teams (No. 12/14 Oklahoma, No. 17/15 Georgia and No. 11/11 Tennessee) and won a first round NCAA Tournament game over Middle Tennessee. TOPS FROM FIELD & THREE As is usually the case under Melanie Balcomb, Vanderbilt was one of the top teams in the nation from the field and from three-point range last season. The Commodores finished sixth in the nation after shooting 46.4% from the field (national champion Baylor led the nation at 48.8%). They matched the sixth-place ranking from three, posting a 37.2% mark from beyond the arc (Richmond led the country at 38.8%). All 10 teams Balcomb has coached at Vanderbilt have finished in the top-20 of the NCAA in field goal percentage. 8 Melanie BALCOMB Head Coach 11th Season The numbers say it all 10 seasons, 10 NCAA Tournaments, 10 seasons of at least 20 wins. Vanderbilt women s basketball has been a model of consistency under Head Coach Melanie Balcomb. That s not to mention three SEC Tournament Championships, four Sweet 16 trips and eight top-25 finishes over a decade in Nashville. Since arriving in 2002, Balcomb has posted a (.717) record at Vanderbilt, averaging 23.8 wins per season. Should she match that pace in season 11, Balcomb will become the winningest coach in program history (Jim Foster, in 11 season). Balcomb was the fastest in program history to reach 200 wins, reaching that mark in five fewer games than Foster. Balcomb is one of just eight coaches in the nation to have led a program to each of the last 10 NCAA Tournaments. In 2012, she becomes the second longest-tenured coach in the Southeastern Conference, trailing only Georgia s Andy Landers (33 seasons). Over her 10 seasons at Vanderbilt, Balcomb has coached eight WNBA draft picks, a WBCA National Defensive Player of the Year (Jennifer Risper), a WBCA National Scholar-Athlete of the Year (Christina Wirth) and an SEC scoring champion (Christina Foggie), while graduating 100% of her players. With nearly 20 years of collegiate head coaching experience, Balcomb is a renowned offensive strategist. Her 10 seasons at Vanderbilt have only enhanced that reputation. Every Commodore squad has finished in the top-20 nationally in field goal percentage, averaging a finish of 7.8 nationally (including four teams that have finished top-four nationally). Balcomb s inaugural Commodore team in led the nation in field goal percentage, shooting 51.3%. Balcomb s squad led the nation in three-point shooting at 43.7%, while her most recent edition finished sixth nationally at 37.2%. The Commodores have finished in the top-10 nationally in field-goal percentage seven times and in the top-10 in three-point field-goal percentage six times under Balcomb. Her teams have also finished in the top five in assists per game, free-throw percentage and scoring offense. Balcomb s teams have been especially successful at home, where Vanderbilt has posted a (.840) record at Memorial Gym. The Commodores have been almost as successful during the stretch-run, as over the last 10 years, Vanderbilt s record over the final nine regular season games is 62-23, good for a.730 winning percentage. Balcomb s success as a head coach is not limited to Vanderbilt. Before arriving at Vanderbilt, Balcomb had successful coaching tenures at Ashland (Ohio) and Xavier. Inducted into the Hightstown High School Hall of Fame in 1996 just one senior, yet she still successfully steered the Commodores to a mark and a 13th-straight NCAA Tournament. Leading the way was break-out star Christina Foggie, who became the first Balcomb player to lead the SEC in scoring (17.7 ppg). Foggie was a First Team All-SEC selection and was joined by four other Commodores earning All-SEC honors Jasmine Lister (second team), Tiffany Clarke (second team), Stephanie Holzer (honorable mention) and Kady Schrann (All-Freshman). Vanderbilt defeated three ranked opponents on the season (No. 12 Oklahoma, No. 17 Georgia and No. 11 Tennessee), earning a seven seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Commodores hosted at Memorial Gym, defeating 10th-seeded Middle Tennessee in the first round before falling to second-seeded Duke. Balcomb started at Vanderbilt in 2002 and wasted no time in implementing her own style of winning. Working to transition veteran players into a new system while building new team chemistry, Balcomb s first year saw the Commodores win six of their last seven regular season games, earn an NCAA Tournament berth, and lead the nation in field goal percentage (51.3) against the fourth toughest schedule in the country. 9 In , Balcomb led the Commodores to their fourth Southeastern Conference Tournament title. She masterfully balanced strong upper-class leadership with exciting freshmen talent, winning 10 consecutive games and advancing to the program s 11th Sweet 16 appearance. One year later, her team made its second consecutive trip to the NCAA Sweet 16. The Commodores posted the most wins (10) in the program s history in Southeastern Conference play finishing with a 10-4 record. The Commodores were ranked seventh in the final AP poll of the season, and earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament after winning another SEC Tournament title. That Vanderbilt squad was the nation s best three-point shooting team, and ranked among the top 10 in points scored. The team s 28-6 mark was the best record for a VU squad in 14 years. The 2008 season was also one of Balcomb s most impressive coaching jobs. Despite graduating three All-SEC seniors, she led the Commodores to a 25-9 record and the school s 13th appearance in the NCAA sweet 16, all with two freshmen and no seniors in the starting lineup. In 2009, Vanderbilt won its sixth SEC Tournament title, the third for Balcomb in the last six years. The team also advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the 14th time in school history -- Balcomb s fourth trip with the Commodores. Vanderbilt finished the year ranked No. 8 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll after narrowly missing an upset of No. 1 seed Maryland in the Raleigh Regional Semifinal. National accolades came flooding in for Vanderbilt, including senior Jennifer Risper being named the Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) National Defensive Player of the Year. Risper and classmate Christina Wirth, who herself was named an All-American and the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, were both selected in the 2009 WNBA Draft. In 2010 Balcomb was faced with one of her most challenging tasks. Faced with replacing National Defensive Player of the Year Jennifer Risper and All-American Christina Wirth, Balcomb guided an undersized team back to the NCAA Tournament, where they narrowly missed advancing to their third consecutive sweet 16. Despite having to overcome numerous injuries throughout out the season and a size disadvantage in almost every game, Vanderbilt finished the season overall. Individually, Balcomb helped junior point guard Jence Rhoads earn first team All-SEC honors, while senior shooting guard Merideth Marsh earned second team All-SEC accolades. Elan Brown and Tiffany Clarke were also named to the SEC All-Freshman Team. The season featured many obstacles that Balcomb successfully maneuvered through to reach another NCAA Tournament and finish third in the SEC. Injuries took an unfortunate toll on the team throughout the year with at least one of Vanderbilt s five leading scorers unavailable for 14 out of the team s 32 games. Injuries coupled with matching Georgia for the fewest upperclassmen in the SEC challenged Balcomb to use different personnel groupings regularly. Despite the challenges, Balcomb again reached 20 wins, finishing and 10-6 in the SEC. Individually, Balcomb helped Jence Rhoads earn honorable mention All-America honors from the Associated Press in addition to first team All-SEC recognition. Rhoads was also a WBCA Region 3 All-American. Freshman center Stephanie Holzer was named honorable mention All-SEC, SEC Sixth Woman of the Year and to the SEC All-Freshmen team. Freshman point guard Jasmine Lister was also named to the SEC All-Freshman Team. In 10 seasons at Vanderbilt, Balcomb has won 13 games in the NCAA Tournament, including a 9-1 mark in the opening round. She holds a winning percentage of 65.7 against SEC opponents. The 24 points for Clarke were just three points shy of her career-high, while she also added a game-high eight rebounds. Christina Foggie was the only other Commodore in double-figures, as she finished with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field, including 3-of-7 from beyond the three-point line. Two Commodores finished with nine points, led by Jasmine Lister, who finished with a game-high 10 assists and was one point shy of a double-double, as she finished with nine points and also added five rebounds. On Monday night in Nashville, the No. 13/17 Commodores got some first hand experience as they overcame a poor shooting night to defeat Lipscomb, 62-45, and improve to 2-0. The Lady Bisons fell to 0-2. The game started out eerily similar to last year s contest with Lipscomb, with a large Vanderblit run. Last season, it was a 17-0 run over the first eight minutes, this season it was a 13-0 run over the first 10 minutes. Vanderbilt s largest lead was 20 with 5:58 remaining in the opening frame and it was a 14-point Commodore lead at the half. The second half saw Vanderbilt shoot just 8-20 from the field (30.8%) as the Lady Bisons hung around, before Vanderbilt was able to pull away in the closing minutes and win, If any player was an exception to the shooting woes, it was Jasmine Lister. The junior guard shot 8-14, including 6-10 from three, to score a game high 24 points. She added five assists and four rebounds in the contest. Christina Foggie contributed 13 points, while Tiffany Clarke added eight and seven rebounds. Hannah Phillips led the Lady Bisons with 21 points. Lipscomb struggled to find offense beyond the guard, as no other player for the home team scored more than six points. Lipscomb closed within six points on three occasions in the second half, but could not draw any closer. The first came with 9:58 remaining before a Lister jumper pushed it back to Phillps answered to cut the lead back to six with 8:05 left, before Heather Bowe connected on a pair of free throws to push the lead back to eight. Phillps made a pair from the line to make it 44-38, but Foggie responded with a 3-pointer to push the lead to nine. Lister added a pair of threes in the final 1:09 to help push the final margin to NASHVILLE -- The Vanderbilt women s basketball team secured a victory over UAB on Thursday, November 15, to run its record to 3-0. Christina Foggie led the Commodores, scoring 19 points, with 17 of those coming in the second half. Tiffany Clarke added 14 points and seven rebounds, while Kady Schrann contributed 11 points. The Blazers, now 2-1, were led by 15 points from Amber Jones. Karisma Chapman added seven points, seven rebounds and four assists. Schrann helped carry the Commodores in the first half, when Clarke and junior guard Jasmine Lister went to the bench with two fouls. She scored a team-high seven points in the opening frame, helping Vanderbilt take a lead into the break. In the second half, Vanderbilt finally saw the Foggie that earned First Team All-SEC honors last season. The Mount Laurel, N.J., native was 6-10 from the field in the second period, including 3-6 from three, to score 17 points. Another key for the Commodores to pull away was defense. Vanderbilt forced 17 Blazer turnovers in the second half and scored 10 points off those miscues. Head Coach Melanie Balcomb also got some impressive play from freshman forward Heather Bowe, who scored six points on a perfect 3-of-3 from the field while grabbing nine rebounds in 17 minutes of action. The Commodores fell to 3-1, while the Flyers improved to 4-0. Vanderbilt got a gamehigh 23 points and nine rebounds from senior Tiffany Clarke in the effort. Christina Foggie contributed 15 points, five rebounds and five assists. Four players in double figures led the Flyers. Andrea Hoover was their leading scorer with 14 points, Jodie Cornelie and Amber Dean each contributed 12 points, while Cassie Sant added 10. While the teams traded baskets early, Dayton used an 8-0 run to open up an lead. After the Commodores cut the lead to 18-17, the Flyers answered with a run of their own to take a lead. The Commodores responded again, outscoring the Flyers 13-8 over the remainder of the period to trail at the break. Clarke led all scorers at the half with 13 points. Vanderbilt struggled to contain Cornelie, who had eight in the first half. Christina Foggie led the Commodores, scoring a game-high 26 points on a career-high eight threes. The junior guard added five assists. Classmate and fellow guard Jasmine Lister contributed 14 points and seven assists in the effort. Kady Schrann, coming off the bench for the first time this season, scored 10 points while dishing out three assists. The Cavaliers were led by Jazmin Pitts, who scored 20 points off the bench. Sarah Imovbioh added 15 poitns and six rebounds, while China Crosby scored 13, dished out seven assists and grabbed five rebounds. Virginia opened the game with a 12-2 run before the Commodores slowly fought back to pull within one, 23-22, with 7:33 left in the opening half. Virginia responded with a 10-0 run over the next four minutes to take a lead. They maintained the 11-point advantage into the break, The Commodores continued to fight in the second half, closing the gap to three points, 47-44, with 12:45 left in the game. Virginia responded again, pushing the lead right back to eight and Vanderbilt would get no closer than five over the rest of the contest. We have to start games better, Vanderbilt Head Coach Melanie Balcomb said. We can t only play hard when we re down. Balcomb was pleased with Foggie s effort, but wants the Preseason All-SEC selection to take charge earlier. (Foggie) has to come out aggressive and ready to shoot the ball, Balcomb explained. GUAYNABO, P.R. -- The Vanderbilt women s basketball team couldn t overcome the loss of Christina Foggie late in the first half and dropped a decision to Florida State in the final game at the San Juan Shootout. The Commodores fell to 3-3 on the season, while the Seminoles improved to 5-0. Vanderbilt was led by 16 points from Jasmine Lister, while Elan Brown contributed 13 points and six rebounds. Freshman Kendall Shaw had her first career double-figure game, scoring 10 points. Florida State saw five players score double-figures. Leonor Rodriguez led the way with 16 points. Alexa Deluzio added 14 off the bench, followed by Chasity Clayton with 13 points and Chelsea Davis with 10 points. Guard Yashira Delgado contributed nine assists. The contest was back and forth early, with six lead changes over the first nine minutes. The Commodores led with 11:26 to play in the opening period. Florida State answered with a 6-0 run to take a lead. The FSU lead was when Foggie went down under the basket with a foot injury and did not return. The Commodores fought, but the lead was 10 at the half, 36-26, and Vanderbilt would get no closer than five in the second half. Vanderbilt Head Coach Melanie Balcomb was thrilled with the effort her team showed, especially after Foggie s injury. We fought, we competed harder each game, Balcomb said. We ve made some great adjustments since the Dayton game. We played a lot freer these last two games. Balcomb felt a major issue was post defense, where the Commodores had to play most the contest with a pair of freshman - Shaw and Heather Bowe - because Tiffany Clarke was in foul trouble. They got easy points in the paint, Balcomb explained. We re going to have to improve our post defense. That s something that plagued us last year and it s plaguing us this year. The biggest positive for the head coach was the play of Brown, one of the team s three seniors. Elan was fabulous today, Balcomb said. She made more plays, defensively (than anyone). She s our smartest defender and she plays defensively, but she also got shots on offense. She played two, three, four and five for us, everything but point, and she s the glue. NASHVILLE -- The Vanderbilt women s basketball team snapped its three game losing skid behind 19 points from senior Tiffany Clarke, defeating Austin Peay on Wednesday, Vanderbilt dominated the second half, as the Commodores (4-3 overall) outscored Austin Peay (1-5 overall), The Commodores also owned the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Lady Govs, Clarke led all scorers with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field, while also pulling down a game-high seven rebounds. Jasmine Lister (12) and Morgan Batey (11) were the only other Commodores to finish in double figures. The 11 points for Batey were a new career-high. Lister and Jasmine Jenkins tied for the team-lead with four assists apiece. As a team, Vanderbilt shot 39 percent from the field, while holding Austin Peay to just 23 percent overall and 21 percent from behind the three-point line. The Commodores also shot an efficient 85 percent (23-of-27) from the free throw line. Austin Peay s Tiasha Gray led the way with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from behind the three-point line. Gray was the lone Lady Gov to score in double-figures. Both teams went back-andforth for much of the first half, as neither team could really find a rhythm. The two teams combined to commit 11 fouls within the first five minutes of the game, while also turning the ball over a combined 24 times in the half. The Commodores held a lead at the half, behind 10 first half points from Clarke. She was the only player in double figures. Vanderbilt shot 42 percent from the field, but committed 15 turnovers, while Austin Peay shot 35 percent and committed nine turnovers. Gray scored nine of her 12 points in the first half for Austin Peay. NASHVILLE -- Head Coach Melanie Balcomb wanted her team to focus on defense right from the tip on Saturday against Tennessee Tech. The Commodores did just that, utilizing a 15-0 run to open the game, before cruising to a victory at Memorial Gym. The Commodores (5-3) were led by 17 points from Tiffany Clarke. The senior also grabbed seven rebounds. Classmate Elan Brown contributed 10 points and nine rebounds. Vanderbilt also got nine from Morgan Batey, eight from Jasmine Lister and seven each from Kady Schrann and Gabby Smith. Tennessee Tech was led by 18 points from Diamond Henderson. T Keyah Williams contributed 10 points and five rebounds. The 15-0 Vanderbilt run to open the contest was the best for a Commodore team to start a game since a 17-0 run against Lipscomb in last season s Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament. During the stretch, Tennessee Tech missed six field goals and turned the ball over twice. In addition to stout defense, Vanderbilt shot 50% from the field (27-54). It marked the first time since the season opener against McNeese State that the Commodores shot at least 50% from the floor. I m really proud of how we re executing, Balcomb said. I think that s what s important. It s being able to slow down. As we start to trust our defense, you can play relaxed on offense. Vanderbilt led the entire contest and the biggest lead of 27 points was the final margin. Balcomb felt her team played two complete halves for the first time this season. We just wanted to put two halves together to continue to build confidence, Balcomb said. I think the most important part of that is the start of both halves. Brown, who has emerged as the team s steadying force, seconded that notion. That was one of our goals, especially this past week, Brown explained. BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Christina Foggie returned to action for the first time since November 24 and helped the Vanderbilt women s basketball team to a victory at Western Kentucky. Foggie exploded for 16 second half points to help the Commodores (6-3) pull away. The junior finished with 18 for the game. Sophomore guard Kady Schrann contributed 14 points, while Jasmine Lister and Tiffany Clarke added 13 each. Senior Elan Brown pulled down a career-best 13 rebounds, while scoring nine points. Lister also dished out 11 assists, recording the first Vanderbilt double-double of the season. Western Kentucky (5-2) was led by 15 points apiece from Chastity Gooch and Alexis Govan. Govan pulled down seven rebounds, while Gooch grabbed six. As a team, Western Kentucky committed just nine turnovers in the game. The Lady Toppers led, 35-34, at the half. Gooch and Govan were leading the charge with 10 and eight points respectively. Schrann was leading the Commodore effort at the intermission with nine points. The game featured eight ties and 11 lead changes, mostly in the first period. Vanderbilt had an outstanding shooting performance, going from the field for 63.3%. The hot shooting helped Vanderbilt overcome 22 turnovers in the contest. The Commodores opened the second half making their first 11 field goals, including four three-pointers, to help build a lead. NASHVILLE -- Tiffany Clarke recorded her first double-double of the season to lead Vanderbilt past Hartford, on Thursday night at Memorial Gym. Clarke scored 12 of her 22 points in the second half to help Vanderbilt (7-3) put away Hartford (6-2) for good. Clarke led all players with 22 points and 12 rebounds, which was her first double-double of the season and 13th of her career. Late in the first half, Clarke also became the 34th player to reach 1,000 career points for the Commodores. She is now tied for 31st (Rhonda Blades) all-time with 1,017 career points. The Duluth, Ga., native shot an efficient 7-of-10 from the field and 8-of-10 from the free throw line. She also tied a career-high with four blocked shots. Kady Schrann was the only other Commodore in double-figures as she finished with 10 points. Jasmine Lister added nine points and a game-high five assists. Elan Brown and Gabby Smith each scored eight points. Christina Foggie tied a career-high with four steals. As a team, the Commodores shot 48 percent from the field, while holding the Hawks to just 32 percent from the field and only 23 percent from behind the three-point line. Vandy outrebounded Hartford, for the game. Vanderbilt led by as many as 24 points in the second half to run away from the Hawks. Hartford s Alex Hall scored 10 points to lead the Hawks, while Amber Bepko added eight points and a team-high six rebounds. Vanderbilt used a 13-0 run midway through the first half to take a 17-8 lead. The Commodores held Hartford scoreless for nearly six minutes during the run and would extend their lead to as many as 13 in the first half.
