The Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Carolina University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer s Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal when the University was a member of the University of South Carolina system. A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time. 2 SEASON OUTLOOK The edition of the Coastal Carolina University women s basketball team features the experience of four seniors and six upperclassmen who helped the Lady Chanticleers to a nine-game turnaround last season. On the other side of the ledger, the Lady Chants also have eight players who have never played a Division I women s basketball game. While the number of inexperienced players might be high, head coach Alan LeForce is excited about the committment to work that the team has showed since the fi nal game of last season. This is the first time since I ve been here that we ve had six of our eight veterans stay during the summer, get jobs, work out three days a week in weights and play, LeForce said. That is encouraging. I think that speaks well for our four seniors. The leadership is going to be real strong this year because we have people with enough passion for the game to stay the whole summer. Coastal did lose more than 34 points a game from last year s squad, which means the newcomers will be asked to step up early in the season. We lost a lot of scoring off of last year s team, LeForce said. It is key that all of these freshmen are good shooters. That s one of the things we were looking for. We fi lled that void and I think we will be a better shooting team this season. Let s get a player-by-player look at the Lady Chanticleers. RETURNEES Senior Alisha Dill returns from a Second Team All-Big South selection last year. Dill averaged 11.3 points and 4.2 rebounds a game and saved her best play for the last third of the season. She scored a career-high 27 points against UNC Asheville and scored in double fi gures in seven of the last nine games. Dill might be one of the most athletic players in the Big South and will look to take her game to the next level in her fourth and fi nal season. Alisha s an excellent shooter, can put the ball on the fl oor, can pass the ball and can defend, LeForce stated. She can be the best player in the league. She has all the tools. She s a very unselfi sh player and for us to be the type of team we need to be, she s going to have to shoot the ball more. She has spent the summer really working at the game and is one of the hardest workers I ve ever coached. Senior Calisha Yates had a strong fi rst season after transferring from Chatanooga State Community College. Yates led the team on the boards, averaging 7.0 rebounds a contest to go along with her 9.4 points per game. Yates was a defensive stopper in the post and has the knack for grabbing a rebound in a key situation. Last year, Calisha was almost like a freshman when it came to Division I basketball, LeForce commented. She got better as the season progressed and worked very hard this summer. Calisha is very strong and is able to put the ball on the fl oor and take it to the basket. This year, she ought to really be better in all facets. Senior Vanessa Laug played in 23 games last year in the post for Coastal, averaging 2.4 points and 2.7 rebounds a game. Laug will look to stay healthy in her fifth year in the program. She knows the program inside and out, things that post players need to know, LeForce commented. No one wants to play the game more than she does, and there will be games this season were we will need her. With her strength and knowledge of what we need done, she is developing into one of our leaders. Senior Kristy Yurichak is returning for her third season and will look to gain valuable minutes in the post. The 6-4 center played in seven games last year, but that number should increase in Kristy is a young lady that needs to play, LeForce said. Post players don t develop unless you play them. She s worked hard in the preseason and her conditioning is better than it s ever been. It s a matter of her working hard enough to get playing time. We need a 6-4 girl who can play. Junior C.J. Ware started all but two games last season at the point, averaging 2.8 points and 2.9 rebounds a game. Ware is one of Coastal s best defenders and was a key to the Lady Chants success last year. On the ball, C.J. is probably our best defensive player, Le- Senior Vanessa Laug Junior C.J. Ware COASTAL WOMEN S BASKETBALL

3 SEASON OUTLOOK Force remarked. She has worked hard on her ball handling and has become more confi dent in what she s doing. The thing we would like for her to improve on, and in the skill group it looks like she has, is shooting. I look for her to have a good junior year. Junior Joanna Pekonen played her first season at Coastal in , averaging 2.0 points and 2.2 rebounds a contest. Pekonen adds depth in the post and the Lady Chants will look for her to make a major jump in minutes this season. Joanna stayed here this summer and worked, LeForce stated. At about 6-3, she can run the fl oor, jump and is getting better defensively. She just needs to be able to make the play when she has the ball. If she can do that, she will be an asset to us. NEWCOMERS Redshirt freshman Elizabeth Weaver looked to be in the mix for playing time last preseason, but a shoulder injury forced the Unicoi, Tenn., native to redshirt. Elizabeth stayed here this summer and worked hard, LeForce said. Coming out of high school, we thought she had a chance to really help our program, and I think she still does. It s just a matter of her getting healthy where she can work every day. Junior Victoria Blanchard comes to Coastal from Walters State Community College in Tennessee, where she was a Second Team All-Conference selection. Blanchard should have an immediate impact to the Coastal rotation. Victoria has played 60 games in junior college, so she s more mature and stronger, LeForce commented. Victoria is probably one of our better passers on the team. We are counting on her doing a lot of things for us even though it is her fi rst year at Coastal. Senior Heather Hummel will have one year of eligibility remaining at Coastal. The transfer from Slippery Rock in Pennsylvania was a First Team All-Conference selection in high school. Heather works hard every day and has a great attitude, LeForce remarked. I m hoping she gets playing time because she s worked hard enough to earn it. Freshman Lauren Grochowski is one of five true freshmen on the Lady Chants roster. Grochowski had 926 points in high school and is just one of the freshmen that has already shown a solid jump shot. Lauren s a good shooter, is strong and has good size, LeForce stated. She s been hampered by different injuries, but we thought coming out of high school, she could help us. Freshman Lacey Lyons was a First Team All-State selection her junior year in Florida and will be another quality shooter for the Lady Chants. Lacey stayed this summer as well and worked out, LeForce said. She is coming off an injury in high school, but I see no effects to that. She s an excellent shooter and has a passion for the game. She will be a big help to us. Freshman Devin Rivers averaged 15.7 rebounds and 5.7 blocked shots her senior season at Felix Varela High School in Miami, Fla. Rivers has a great vertical jump and will help the Lady Chants in the post this season. Devin is an excellent rebounder and a great defensive player, LeForce stated. We can see her playing that role. She s still feeling her way, but she will help us with her strength and quickness. Freshman Amanda Stull was a First Team All-State selection in Indiana, averaging 20 points and seven rebounds as a senior. Her jump shot and quickness should get her minutes in the Coastal lineup. Amanda can do so many things with the basketball, LeForce stated. She can put it on the fl oor, can shoot it and can pass it. She has good quickness and will help us this season. Freshman Lori Whitaker is another excellent shooter in the recruiting class. Whitaker holds the three-point field goals made record at Bloomington North High School in Indiana. Lori works very hard and is an excellent shooter, LeForce remarked. Lori has a good attitude and will make a contribution for us. SCHEDULE Coastal opens the season at the College of Charleston Nov. 16. The home opener is Nov. 20 against Southern Virginia, one of 14 games at Kimbel Arena this season. The highlight of the non-conference schedule is Monday, Dec. 18, when CCU faces 2006 Final Four particpant North Carolina at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. Coastal also has Southern Conference foes Furman and UNC Greensboro along with Campbell and UNC Wilmington on the non-conference slate. The Big South schedule starts Jan. 13 with a home game against eight-time defending champion Liberty. The Big South Tournament format will be changed for this season, with all eight teams heading to Asheville, N.C., for the event March Our schedule is good, LeForce said. We re going to fi nd out pretty early how good we are. The schedule is demanding, but one we can compete with. In the Big South, Liberty is going to be good again, and I think that every team in the league will improve from last year. The keys this season will be shooting the basketball at a better percentage, the play of our post and how our freshman come along, the head coach concluded. We have a close-knit and committed group that wants to be successful right away. I think we have that opportunity as well COASTAL WOMEN S BASKETBALL 3

4 HEAD COACH ALAN LEFORCE 10th year at Coastal 25th Overall Cumberland Overall Coaching Record The LeForce File Born: Feb. 27, 1935 Wife: Shirley, two children Jeff and Michelle Five Grandchildren Allie, Abigail, Austin, Andrew, Kathryn Hometown: Williamsburg, Ky. College: Cumberland College 1957 Coaching Honors : District Coach of the Year (National Basketball Coaches Association) : Tennessee State Coach of the Year (Tennessee Sportswriter Association) : Big South Women s Coach of the Year Alan LeForce enters his 10th season as head women s basketball coach at Coastal Carolina University and has made his mark as one of the most respected, experienced and successful coaches in the Big South Conference. From a second-place Big South fi nish in his inaugural year at CCU to a magical run in the BSC tournament in to a team that pulled off another tournament upset in , the Big South Coach of the Year has been a driving force in developing a program that is ready to take the next step. LeForce has 49 years of coaching experience and has an overall record of as a collegiate head coach, including a record at the helm of the Lady Chanticleers. Coastal was one of the most improved teams in the nation in , going with a third-place fi nish in the Big South Conference. That 8 1/2 game turnaround was 17th best in the country. Coastal defeated Birmingham-Southern in the quarterfi nal of the Big South Tournament before falling in a nailbiter to High Point in the semifi nals. The Lady Chants had two Second Team All-Big South members (Kim Turner and Alisha Dill) and had three players (Turner, Dill and Amber Rose) average over 11 points a game. Coastal once again excelled on defense, leading the league in turnover margin and steals while holding its opponents to 57 points per game. LeForce made college basketball history in when he won his 100th game at Coastal Nov. 30, 2004 against UNC Wilmington. LeForce is the only head coach to accumulate 100 wins as a Division I men s and women s head coach and has 100+ wins at the public high school level, the private high school level and in the men s NAIA level. In , LeForce guided Coastal to a record and a sixth-seed in the Big South Conference Tournament. The Lady Chanticleers went into High Point and the Big South Quarterfi nals as the underdog, but pulled out a upset over the thirdseeded Panthers, giving LeForce seven wins in BSC Tournament play. LeForce coached Nikki Reddick, who was named to the All-Big South Conference First Team for the third straight season and ended her career as CCU s all-time leading scorer. Coastal also went 8-5 at Kimbel Arena and were among the league leaders in scoring offense and three-point fi eld-goal percentage. LeForce led the Lady Chants to a overall record and a 6-8 record in the Big South in , advancing to the semifi nals of the Big South Tournament before falling to top-seed Liberty. The Lady Chants had a 7-5 record at Kimbel Arena, including a thrilling triple-overtime win over Radford. The season could have been one of the most memorable in LeForce s career. With only nine healthy players to fi nish the regular season, the Lady Chants tied for sixth place in the conference and earned the seventh seed for the Big South Tournament. However, CCU got hot in the tournament, upsetting second-seeded Elon, 66-64, in the quarterfi nals and sixth-seeded Winthrop, 58-56, in the semifi nals before falling to top-seeded Liberty in the championship game. During the season, with only three players with previous Division I experience, LeForce led his young squad to a record. Coastal fi nished second in the Big South and boasted the school s first ever Big South Player of the Year in Brooke Weisbrod. The squad continued the program s improvement with a overall record and a second-place fi nish in the Big South. The 20 victories again topped the list for most wins since joining the NCAA Division I ranks in 1986 and was the fi rst time a Coastal team reached the 20-win plateau since the team garnered 21 wins. LeForce earned Big South Coach of the Year honors in as he led Coastal to a second-place fi nish and an record. Coastal also came within one game of COASTAL WOMEN S BASKETBALL

5 HEAD COACH ALAN LEFORCE making the NCAA Tournament before losing to Liberty in the tournament s championship game. The foundation of a strong Lady Chants program began in LeForce s fi rst season. Even though the team posted a 9-18 record, Coastal placed third in the Big South Conference after being picked to fi nish last in the conference preseason poll. LeForce s fi rst recruiting class included the Big South Rookie of the Year in Weisbrod. Coach LeForce has won on every level in his 48 years of coaching. From 1990 to 1996, he served as head men s basketball coach at East Tennessee State University. In that six-year span, the Buccaneers posted a overall record and his.574 winning percentage is the highest in the school s history for coaches with at least four years at ETSU. He led the Bucs to two Southern Conference regular-season co-championships, two Southern Conference Tournament titles and two NCAA Tournament appearances. In his fi rst season as head coach, he directed the Bucs to a 28-5 record and a spot among the nation s top-20, rising as high as #10 in the Associated Press poll. In the 1992 NCAA Tournament, ETSU knocked off the University of Arizona in the fi rst round before falling to eventual national runner-up University of Michigan in the second round. The victory over the Wildcats was the biggest upset of the fi rst round of that year s NCAA Tournament and marked the fi rst time a school from the Southern Conference had advanced past the fi rst round of the tournament in a decade. LeForce was named the 1991 District Coach of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). During his tenure at ETSU, LeForce coached seven All-Southern Conference players including Greg Dennis and Keith Mister Jennings, who also was named to the SoCon s 75th Anniversary Second Team. Before serving as head coach at ETSU, LeForce was an assistant coach with the Bucs for four seasons. Following the 1996 season, he resigned as ETSU s coach to accept an assistant director of athletics position at the school. LeForce began his coaching career in 1958 at his alma mater, Williamsburg High School in Williamsburg, Ky. He coached there from 1958 to 1961 and from 1963 to 1967, taking the year off to serve as an assistant coach at Cumberland (Ky.) College, his college alma mater. From 1968 to 1971, LeForce served as an assistant coach at Furman University. He became head coach at the College of Charleston in During his nine-year stint in Charleston, the Cougars ranked among the top teams in NAIA competiton. He compiled a record and posted fi ve straight winning seasons. His 1975 Cougar squad won a thenschool record 21 games. He also was the school s director of athletics for seven years while he was there. It was at this point in his career that LeForce came to Myrtle Beach and accepted the head coaching and athletics director positions at Coastal Academy. In fi ve years, he led the boy s basketball team to two South Carolina Independent School State Championships and an impressive record. In 1985, he moved to Mt. Pleasant, S.C., and coached the boy s program at East Cooper High School for one season before accepting his assistant s job at ETSU. LeForce is married to the former Shirley Smith of Williamsburg, Ky. The LeForce s have two children, Jeff and Michelle. Jeff and his wife, Joy, have four children: two daughters, Allie and Abigail, and two sons, Austin and Andrew. Michelle and her husband David have a daughter, Kathryn. 6 Q&A WITH COACH LEFORCE Q: What is your opinion of women s basketball in the Big South Conference this season? A: We re all chasing Liberty again, but it went down to the end last year with them and High Point. They are going to be tough with everybody returning. I m hoping that our young girls can step it up where we can be in the race. Liberty is going to be good and High Point should be good again. Radford is going to be good. I don t see any team in the league that is not going to improve. Our conference had a banner year last season in terms of quality wins and the strength of our RPI (14th highest in the nation). I see this trend continuing this season. Q: What advice would you give to an incoming freshman studentathlete at Coastal? A: First of all, they have some preconceived ideas of what it s going to be like, but they don t really know what it s going to be like. They don t understand playing college athletics, how much of a demand it is on their time. The big thing is the budget of their time because they go to class, have weights, study hall, practice times and meetings they have to attend and have a social life. It s tough. Come in, be ready to discipline yourself to a rigid schedule because it s going to be demanding of you. If not, you re going to have some problems either academically or athletically. That s why you have to be disciplined. Our staff does a good job of helping them budget their time... There is no offseason for a sport anymore. Q: What does Coastal have to offer for a studentathlete? A: In the nine years I ve been here, I ve seen a tremendous growth in the student body, new buildings, nice dorms, nice facilities and soon a new facility for basketball. We re 10 miles from the ocean. We have a very congenial student body and an outstanding faculty. I see a lot of positives and yet we re only 50 years old so there are a lot of good things that are going to happen. I think it s a great place, great climate. I think students enjoy it once they get here. Q: What are some keys to having success on the court this season? A: We lost four players last year that played a pretty big role in our defensive schemes. We have to pick that up. Our defense has to be better. We need to shoot the basketball better this season. We have good shooters and recruited good shooters like Alisha Dill and Calisha Yates. They are going to have to take more shots for us to be successful. Our freshman are going to have to step up and play a key role. This is one of the best recruiting classes I ve seen, not only at Coastal but in the Big South. All of our freshmen are good shooters and that s one of the things we were looking for. I don t see our freshman being intimidated. We ll just have to wait and see. Finally, we will need our post players to step up. We re going to have to get help from Joanna Pekonen and Kristy Yurichak. Those are the big keys for us to have a good season. Q: What should a fan expect to see when they attend a Coastal women s basketball game? A: You re going to expect good defense. We ll pretty much be an up-tempo team. You re going to see a team that will play a lot of players because of the style we play. I think they ll enjoy it. They are unselfish, hard workers and hard-nosed. There are a lot of things the purists of basketball will enjoy about this team. I m hoping that our fans see a better shooting team, a better offensive team. I think our fans will want to see us shoot the basketball a little better. We re going to be the same type of team that doesn t beat itself. It s our turn to win some close games. Q: What is the most satisfying aspect of coaching? A: Honestly, I like to win. That s our job. But to see young ladies come in as young ladies and leave as mature ladies because they ve been in our program four or five years is rewarding, because they ve been around good people. I like to see them be successful by graduating and having a good career on the court. They are realizing that all the hard work, yelling and screaming, banging and knocking was worth it. That they re going to leave here and be able to make a great contribution to society because they ve been in our program and we ve helped them become better people, that s my goal COASTAL WOMEN S BASKETBALL
