1 While Brad s record is outstanding, it is his character and values that excited us most in making a final decision. We believe he is the right person to lead our program on and off the court and we are delighted that he, his wife Paula and his two daughters are joining the Raider family. Mike Cusack, WSU Athletics Director Brad Brownell took the Dayton area and the Wright State campus by storm last April when he was introduced as the new Raider head coach. His down to earth approach won over fans and media immediately. The fact that he has been where the Raiders want to be was a final selling point for the WSU administration.

5 Season Outlook When new coach Brad Brownell took over the reigns of the Wright State University men s basketball program last March, he saw potential potential not only to win, but potential to win continuously and do it the right way. The Indiana native saw the support staff and facilities were in place; he saw a University and a great community that was hungry for a winner. The Raiders will have their top four scorers and top four rebounders return from last year s team which includes Horizon League first teamer DaShaun Wood and fifth-year senior Drew Burleson. Wood, a 5-11 guard, averaged nearly 18 points a game and led the League in steals while being the first Raider to ever be named to the Horizon s All-Defensive Team. The Detroit native currently sits as the 16th all-time scorer and seventh in assists. Burleson, a 6-5 forward, ranked second on the squad in points and rebounds at 12.5 and 5.1 respectively. Also returning will be 6-8, junior center Jordan Pleiman. Pleiman, a crowd favorite, led the Green and Gold in rebounding last year at 6.7 per game but also broke the double-digit barrier in points at 10.5 per contest. The Ohio native can point to several positive games last year, including 18 points at Bowling G re e n a n d a c o u p l e 11-rebounds efforts. Joining these three with experience wearing the Raider colors will be four players, all of whom started games throughout last season. The back court players back include seniors Reinaldo Smith and Tyrone Scott and sophomore William Graham. Graham started 18 contests, averaging more than 21 minutes a game for the year along with a 2.7 points per game average and 59 assists. Smith, an early-season starter who had injury problems, started three game while playing in just 14 tilts overall. Scott, a 6-3 junior college transfer, started six games mid-season, averaged nearly 23 minutes a game overall while hitting 31 threes second best on the team. The final returning player will be 6-7 Scottie Wilson, who showed flashes of brilliance starting five games. The junior collected his career high 14 points against Detroit and nine rebounds with eight made free throws against league-leader UW-Milwaukee. Like the new coach, the Raiders will also have three new players to lean on this year: Vaughn Duggins, Todd Brown, and Eric Stevenson. Duggins, a 6-3 guard from Indiana, played in several All-Star games after averaging a statehigh 26.5 points and 6.9 rebounds a game. Brown played last year with Canton-McKinley High School and helped them to their second straight division I state title, averaging nearly ten points a game. Stevenson, a late bloomer from North Carolina, averaged 17 points a game while being named his league s Player of the Year. As for the schedule, the new Wright State coaching staff came in last Spring with many holes to fill and came up with one of the best slate of games for the Raiders. Familiar names such as Miami (OH), Bowling Green and IP-Fort Wayne will now be mixed with new foes like Coastal Carolina, Bradley, St. Bonaventure, Marshall, and Marist. Also, there will be a trip to preseason national favorite Louisiana State for a tournament that includes the Tigers, Samford and Mississippi Valley. As always, the schedule includes home-and-home contests with the competitive Horizon League, that has sent teams to the Sweet 16 twice in the last four years. 30

6 Brad Brownell Head Coach First Season (83-40 overall) Brad Brownell became the seventh head coach of the Wright State University men s basketball program on March 31, 2006 and he hit the ground running as he was introduced a Head Coach Brad Brownell few days later to a large fan reception in the new Setzer Pavilion/Mills Morgan Center. As he accepted questions from the audience, the fans were hoping the season could start immediately as Coach Brownell showed why WSU Athletic Director Dr. Michael Cusack chose him from so many applicants to guide the future of the promising Raider program. During Brownell s tenure as head coach, the University of North Carolina Wilmington men s basketball program has enjoyed an unprecedented era of success. The Evansville, Indiana native brings a four-year head coaching record of to the Raiders along with two Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament appearances. University of North Carolina Wilmington posted a 25-8 mark this past season and won the CAA Tournament, beating out 2006 Final Four participant George Mason University. The Seahawks advanced to the CAA Tournament where they lost in overtime to George Washington University His four-year Colonial conference record was which was the best overall winning program in the league during that time. Two different groups (the league s coaches and media; and Collegeinsider.com) have twice named Brownell the Colonial Conference Coach of the Year (2003 and 2006) and Foxsports.com cited him as last season s National mid-major coach of the year. While Brad s record is outstanding, it is his character and values that excited us most in making a final decision. We believe he is the right person to lead our program on and off the court and we are delighted that he, his wife Paula, and his two daughters are joining the Raider family, said Mike Cusack. Averaging just short of 21 wins a season, Brownell has compiled five All-CAA performers, one CAA Player of the Year, four Brad Brownell with his wife, Paula, and daughters, Abby, 8, and Kaitlyn, 5 31

7 CAA All-Defensive Team selections, one Defensive Player of the Year, and seven CAA All-Academic honorees besides two NCAA regular-season titles, two CAA Tournament Championships, two Coach of the Year awards, and two CAA Tournaments. Before accepting the helm, Brownell was the assistant or associate head coach at University of North Carolina Wilmington under current DePaul University head coach Jerry Wainwright. The Seahawks posted a mark during that eightyear period, including two NCAA and two NIT appearances. During his 12 years in Wilmington, University of North Carolina Wilmington was one of the best defensive teams in the nation, leading the CAA in defense in all but two of those campaigns. A native of Evansville, Indiana, Brownell arrived at University of North Carolina Wilmington in and immediately worked with Wainwright in bringing the Seahawks into the national spotlight. With Brownell on the bench, the Seahawks earned the school s second NCAA Tournament berth in and advanced to the Round of 32 with a stunning overtime upset of fourth-seeded Southern California in the NCAA Tournament. He also worked as a graduate assistant coach at Evansville during the campaign. At Evansville, Brownell worked as a graduate assistant coach with former coach Jim Crews during the season as the Purple Aces fashioned a 24-6 record en route to the MCC Championship and a berth in the NCAA Midwest Regional. Brownell earned his Bachelor s Degree from DePauw in 1991 and completed his Master s at Indianapolis in He and his wife, paula, have two daughters, Abby, 8, and Kaitlyn, 5.
