REDHAWKS HOST ROCKETS IN MAC HOME OPENER SATURDAY: Miami University s men s basketball team hosts Toledo in its Mid-American Conference home opener Saturday, Jan. 9 at 4 p.m. Both teams search for their first MAC win in two tries on Saturday. The Rockets had a three-game win streak snapped on Wednesday at Ball State in its MAC opener. Miami seeks to halt a four-game losing streak. 2. CLOSING IN ON 1,000: With 969 career points, senior guard Geovonie McKnight is just 31 way from becoming 35th member of Miami s 1,000 Point Club. Miami s last 1,000-point scorer was Julian Mavunga ( ), who amassed 1,389 points during his RedHawk career. 3. WRIGHT PROVIDES SPARK AGAINST BOWLING GREEN: Senior forward Kalif Wright provided a spark off the bench for the RedHawks at Bowling Green on Jan. 6. Wright was one of three RedHawks to score in double figures, amassing a career-high 10 points off a 5-of-7 shooting effort. He added a season-high four rebounds to his line as well as a steal in a season-best 16 minutes of action /20 VISION: After not having a 20-point scorer through 12 games, Miami has had two in as many outings. Toledo owns a 9-5 overall record heading into Saturday s contest. Jonathan Williams paces the team at 19.3 ppg, while Nathan Boothe follows closely behind at 18.1 ppg and a teamleading 8.6 rpg. Williams and Boothe rank first and second, respectively, among MAC scoring leaders. Stuckey Mosley is the other Rocket scoring in double figures at 11.4 ppg. As a team, Toledo averages 18.4 assists per game and 10.3 turnovers per game, which both rank 13th nationally. The Rockets 1.78 assist/turnover ratio ranks third nationally. Averaging 81.3 ppg, the Rockets lead the MAC in scoring offense. THE SERIES WITH THE ROCKETS: Saturday marks the 123rd meeting between Miami and Toledo with the RedHawks owning a advantage in the all-time series. When playing in Oxford, Miami leads Toledo Toledo has won the last five meetings between the teams, including a win at Savage Arena last year. The teams last met at Millett Hall on Jan. 29, 2014 with the Rockets posting an win. Miami s last win in the series was in Toledo on Feb. 12, 2011, 68-66, which was the last in a five-game win streak for MU in the series against the Rockets. The RedHawks last win against the Rockets at Millett Hall came on Feb. 20, 2010 by a score of UP NEXT: The RedHawks hit the road for a pair of games at Kent State at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 12 and at Ball State at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16. Miami then returns home to host Buffalo at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 19 before heading back out on the road for a game at Akron on Saturday, Jan. 23. In the first game of 2016, senior guard Geovonie McKnight poured in a career-high 24 points against South Carolina State on Jan. 2 to lead all scorers. It was the first 20-point scoring effort by a RedHawk this season and the first of McKnight s career. He shot a sizzling 75.0 percent from the floor, knocking down 9-of-12 shots and notching a career-best for field goals. Senior guard Eric Washington followed that with a season-high 21 points at Bowling Green to lead all scorers on Jan. 6. DOUBLE TIME: Behind a 15-point, 11-rebound effort at Bowling Green, senior guard Geovonie McKnight notched the third double-double by a RedHawk this season and the second of his career. Coincidentally, his first career double-double also came at Bowling Green last season with 13 points and 10 boards on Feb. 18. On Dec. 15 against Jackson State, senior forwards Chris Bryant and LJ Livingston Jr. each recorded their first career double-doubles. Bryant amassed a career-high 16 points and tied a career high with 11 rebounds against the Tigers. Livingston notched 11 points and a career-high 10 rebounds against JSU. It was the first time since Nov. 21, 2011 that two RedHawks had double-doubles in the same game when Julian Mavunga and Josh Sewell each recorded a double-double. TAKING ADVANTAGE OF CHARITY: Early in the season the RedHawks struggled from the charity stripe, hitting 69.2 percent of their free-throw attempts over the first six games. There has been a marked improvement in production from the free-throw line over the past eight games as Miami has sunk 76.5 percent of its charity tosses. Over the last eight games, senior guard Eric Washington has sunk 43-of-48 (.896) free throws, while senior guard Geovonie McKnight has hit 32-of-41 (.780) charity tosses. Washington knocked down 17 consecutive free throws from Dec. 15-Jan. 2. He missed his first attempt at Bowling Green on Jan. 6. McKnight had hit 14 straight from Dec. 15 to Jan. 2 until his second-half miss against the South Carolina State. He is one away from the No. 8 total of 148 by Eddie Schilling ( ). HOME COOKIN : Before the season even begins, the RedHawks are already setting records. Miami will play a program record 18 home games this season, eclipsing the previous best of 17 home contests the Red and White hosted a year ago. MILLS AND WASHINGTON NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Behind stellar performances that propelled Miami to the Men Against Breast Cancer Challenge title, senior guard Eric Washington and sophomore forward Rod Mills were named to the all-tournament team. It is the second regular-season all-tournament honor for Washington at Miami, who was named to the Cancun Challenge All-Tournament Team a year ago. WASHINGTON TABBED PRESEASON ALL-MAC EAST DIVISION: Senior guard Eric Washington was named to the Mid-American Conference East Division Preseason Team. Washington was a second-team All-MAC pick and second-team NABC All-District selection last year. He was Miami s leading scorer in at 14.2 ppg and notched the third-most single-season assists in program history (176). 6 6 Head Coach John Cooper John Cooper is in his fourth season at the helm of the Miami University men s basketball program. With three seasons in Oxford under his belt, Cooper and his staff have worked diligently over the past three years to continue adding a diverse group of talented newcomers to a solid nucleus of returners. His tireless work ethic and an understated intensity look to continue to pay dividends in Cooper, who was announced as the program s 23rd head coach on April 6, 2012, worked to establish an up-tempo system when he arrived to the Oxford campus that continues to evolve. The RedHawks have ranked among the top 35 nationally in steals each of the last two season, coming in at 35th in with 245 steals. Miami began to gain momentum at the end of the season, finishing the regular season by winning five of its last seven games, included two against the then-mac East Division leaders. Guard Eric Washington earned All-MAC and NABC All-District honors in his junior campaign. In , the RedHawks reached double figures in wins for the first time in three years and also nearly tripled their number of Mid-American Conference wins from the season. The RedHawks finished the regular season as the No. 8 seed in the MAC Tournament to host a first-round game and defeated Kent State in the opening round to advance to the second round in Cleveland for the second straight year. Miami led the MAC in steals and free-throw percentage in , finishing 10th in the country in steals per game (8.6) and 13th in freethrow percentage (.754) in the final national standings. The RedHawks free-throw percentage was the second-best in program history, while its 267 steals ranked third. Despite a restructuring year in the first year under Cooper, the RedHawks produced a number of highlights throughout the season. In Cooper s first game at Millett Hall as the RedHawks head coach, Miami shattered a program record for steals, snagging 22 against Grambling State on Nov. 13, As part of that record-breaking team performance, guard Quinten Rollins tied a Miami single-game record with seven steals. Miami went on to post the fourth-most steals of any team in program history, amassing 258 for the season. Although the RedHawks were the No. 11 seed in the 2013 MAC Tournament, Miami hit the road for Bowling Green where a gritty effort by the Red and White resulted in a solid win in the opening round of the tournament. The win punched the RedHawks ticket to Cleveland for the second round of the MAC Tournament after a oneyear absence from making the trip to Quicken Loans Arena. During the season, Cooper picked up his 50th career win when the RedHawks produced a triumph over Bowling Green on Jan. 16, On Feb. 2, 2013, Cooper helped guide Miami to the program s 600th Mid-American Conference win as the Red and White notched a road win at Central Michigan. He has amassed a record in three years with the RedHawk program while posting a mark in six seasons as a head coach. In the last three years, all the RedHawk seniors have earned degrees and the four scholarship players have all gone on to careers in the professional ranks. Will Sullivan 15 and Will Felder 14 are both playing professional basketball overseas with Sullivan signing a contract with Donar Gronignen in the Netherlands and Felder a two-time All-MAC selection now playing with Challans in France after a year in Holland. Quinten Rollins 14 was a second-round pick in the NFL 2015 draft by the Green Bay Packers, while Vince Legarza 13 is working in the NBA s Minnesota Timberwolves organization after two years with the Atlanta Hawks organization. Cooper came to Miami after a three-year stint as the head coach at Tennessee State in which he built the program into a formidable force. Perhaps TSU s most impressive victory came on Feb. 9 when it MIAMI UNIVERSITY REDHAWKS MEN S BASKETBALL defeated seventh-ranked Murray State, The loss was only one of two in that was suffered by the 31-2 Racers. Cooper s team nearly earned a berth in the 2012 NCAA Tournament, losing at the hands of Murray State by a score of in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament final. On Feb. 19, 2012, Cooper led TSU to a victory over Miami at Millett Hall. TSU also claimed its first win over an SEC opponent in when the Tigers defeated South Carolina, His three-year overall record at TSU was 43-51, including a mark in OVC games. Cooper was a finalist for four different coaching awards in , including the Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year Award (national coach of the year), the John McLendon Award (top overall collegiate coach), The Hugh Durham Award (nation s top Mid-Major coach) and the Ben Jobe Award (nation s top minority coach in Division I). Cooper joined Tennessee State following a five-year stint as Associate Head Basketball Coach at Auburn University under Jeff Lebo. He played a vital role in the revitalization of the Tigers basketball program with Auburn recording its first winning season since Auburn posted a record in , advancing to the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament. Prior to his time at Auburn, Cooper spent two seasons at Oregon where he helped the Ducks to a mark. Oregon went with an NCAA Tournament appearance in and had an record in 03-04, losing in the NIT semifinals. From the season through the campaign, Cooper served as an assistant coach to Eddie Fogler at South Carolina. During a three-year stretch from to 97-98, the Gamecocks posted a record. The squad won the Southeastern Conference title, finishing with an overall record of 24-8 and finishing No. 6 in the national rankings. Cooper s first coaching job was as an assistant at Fayetteville State from A native of Kansas City, Mo., Cooper played collegiately at Wichita State. He led the Shockers in scoring and rebounding during his junior and senior seasons. Cooper was a two-time team captain and a Rhodes Scholar candidate in his senior year. He played professional basketball with the Ft. Wayne Fury of the CBA in and with Holland s Commodore Mustangs in the European Professional Basketball League in Cooper earned a bachelor s degree in business administration from Wichita State in He is married to the former Melissa Mathis. They have a daughter, Kennedy, and a son, Kameron.
