One of the most respected coaches in the nation, Dunphy has personified success over his coaching career. 4 head coach On Following Hall of Fame coach John Chaney I don t think it is an easy job following John Chaney. Somebody had to do it. Now it s me. On Style of Play We just play basketball. We get it out of the basket. We push it out to the first guy. He pushes it up and if he is open he shoots. If he is not, he passes the ball. We cut. We screen. We play basketball. We do not have a defined style. Our style is to play as well as we can. Some games are going to be high tempo. Some games are going to be low tempo. My coaching style is fair and honest, yet demanding. We have to get things done here and we are going to do it a certain way. It is the way it should be done. Every coach in America wants it done that way to make good decisions on offense and to be disciplined on the defensive end. On Defense Defensively we are going to be as good as we can be in the scoring area. Hopefully we can create some offense off our defense. We are going to be a predominantly man-to-man defensive basketball team that hopefully has a real good feel for what we are trying to do and will not give up any easy baskets. fran dunphy Q&a On Senior Leadership I have appointed Dion and Dustin as cocaptains. They have been around the longest and understand Temple basketball the most. I think they can help me the most in my leadership role. It has to translate to off the court but it will have to translate on the court as well. They will have to play a lot of minutes and play really good basketball and be tremendously dedicated to making Temple better. On the schedule I think it is a tremendously challenging schedule. Right away you start off with the Atlantic 10 being a really good basketball conference. Then you have two extra city games, Penn and Villanova. Add in two more area teams like Drexel and Lafayette along with our Mid-American Conference commitment and right away you are challenging yourself. That does not even include a home game against Rutgers, Cincinnati and a trip to Duke. On playing Penn.. It will be very emotional playing Penn. It will be a very difficult game for me to prepare for. Once the ball goes up though, it is going to be our team against theirs and I will forget all of those things. For his efforts, he was awarded the national Coach of the Year award in The Coaches vs. Cancer program was created in 1993 by the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) in the wake of the death of former North Carolina State coach Jim Valvano along with the news that former Missouri head coach Norm Stewart was battling the disease. The support for Coaches vs. Cancer has become extraordinary over the years, Dunphy said. The events that our region puts on in the Philadelphia area alone helps raise needed funds for the daily battle against this disease. I am proud to be involved in such an outstanding organization. Coaches vs. Cancer leverages the celebrity of the nation s men s and women s basketball coaches to raise awareness of key cancer issues and to raise money for the American Cancer Society s mission. Coaches and basketball teams from the six Division I Philadelphia schools Drexel, La Salle, Penn, Saint Joseph s, Temple and Villanova participate in several events throughout the year and have helped the program raise over $1 million to benefit the American Cancer Society with events including the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, Coaches vs. Cancer Challenge, Midnight Practice Events, March Madness Breakfast, coaches clinics and local game activities. In , the Big 5 coaches raised nearly $500,000 and became the No. 1 Coaches vs. Cancer program in the nation. All proceeds from the events go directly toward the Society s research, advocacy and patient service programs in each coach s local community. 27
