SAN JOSÉ STATE UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL FACT SHEET (GAME #8 - Colorado State) Upcoming game: San José State vs. Colorado State Saturday, November 1, 2014, Spartan Stadium, San José, Calif. 4:00 p.m. (PT), CBS Sports Network San José State record: 3-4, 2-1 Mountain West. The Spartans two-game winning streak ended with a loss at Navy on October 25. Colorado State record: 7-1, 3-1 Mountain West. The Rams extended their winning streak to six in a row after hosting a win over Wyoming in the 105th Border War. Colorado State s six-game winning streak is the longest among conference teams heading into games on November 1. San José State head coach Ron Caragher: In his second season as the San José State head coach. Has a record of 9-10 with the Spartans. Overall, he is in his eighth season as a major college head coach with a record. He is 1-0 as a head coach against Colorado State. Caragher s first six seasons as a head coach were at the University of San Diego. Colorado State head coach Jim McElwain: In his third season at Colorado State. Has a major college head coaching record of 18-15, all with the Rams. He is 0-2 as a head coach against San José State. San José State-Colorado State series: The Spartans lead the series, 4-3. San José State has wins in the last three meetings between these teams including a triumph at Colorado State last year. The Rams last win in the series was a victory on October 11, 1996 in Spartan Stadium - the only time in three visits to San Jose Colorado State left with the victory. Frontrunners in the Mountain West: San José State and Colorado State are among the top two teams in their respective divisions within the Mountain West. The Spartans enter the weekend s play in second place with a 2-1 record and 0.5 games behind San Diego State in the West Division. San José State presently is in control of its destiny for a West Division championship and a berth in the Mountain West Championship game on Saturday, December 6. Colorado State is tied with Boise State for first in the Mountain Division with a 3-1 mark. The Rams lost at Boise State, 37-24, on September 6. Former Spartans returning to Spartan Stadium: Three Colorado State assistant coaches once were members of the San José State coaching staff. Colorado State offensive coordinator Dave Baldwin is the most notable. Baldwin was a Spartan assistant coach for four seasons ( ) and the San José State head coach for four seasons ( ). Baldwin was the only Spartan head coach to direct the program to a winning season from 1993 through 2005 when San José State posted a 7-5 win-loss record in As a head coach, he had an win-loss record. Colorado State co-defensive coordinator Al Simmons was a graduate assistant in charge of the cornerbacks during the 2005 season. Special teams coordinator Jeff Hammerschmidt had a similar role with the Spartans in Both Simmons and Hammerschmidt were hired by Dick Tomey.

Spartans 11-3 when rushing for 150: San José State rushed for a season-high 277 yards in the October 4 UNLV win. It was the third time in 2014 the Spartans ran for at least 150 yards. Presently with 106 career receptions, Winston reached the milestone in his 16th major college football game on the first play in the overtime win at Wyoming. His 101st reception turned out to be the game-winning touchdown in the overtime victory. The late Guy Liggins ( ) is the only other San José State player to reach the 100 mark in as few as 16 games. Liggins, a community college transfer played two seasons for the Spartans and finished with 149 career receptions. Unconventional: San José State has a 2-5 record in overtime games. Both overtime wins came on the road and involved the Spartans losing the cion toss, being assigned the ball first in the first overtime, scoring and holding off the opposition on downs. Austin Lopez Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Week: Placekicker Austin Lopez was the first San Jose State player to receive Mountain West Player of the Week recognition in 2014 for four field goals and three PAT s in the win over UNLV. Lopez tied one San José State single-game and set three University career records in the UNLV game. Lopez matched the school record of four field goals in a game for the second time in his career. He broke the San José State career records for most field goals (43), most kick-scoring points (238) and overall scoring (238).

San José State sets team passing record in opener: San José State tied its single-game team record for passing accuracy in the North Dakota win completing 23-of-26 passes. Tyler Winston sets school mark: Wide receiver Tyler Winston caught 10 passes for 96 yards and two TDs in the win over North Dakota. Including the last two games of 2013 against Navy and Fresno State, respectively, Winston became the first San José State player to catch 10 or more passes in three consecutive games.
