Rowan defeated Hobart during the second round of the 2004 NCAA Division III Tournament. The Statesmen drew first blood jumping out to a 7-0 lead on a 9-yard quarterback draw by Shawn Mizro, but the Profs responded with 38 unanswered points to end Hobart s season. NCAA PLAYOFF HISTORY: Hobart is making its fifth NCAA Tournament appearance since The Statesmen earned one of 11 at-large bids into the 32-team field. Since first cracking the postseason party, Hobart is 3-4 overall advancing to the postseason in each of the past two seasons. about last week: Hobart closed out the regular season with a victory over Rochester. After a bumpy start, the Statesmen defense proved to be the difference in the game. The Yellowjackets posted touchdowns on their first two drives, but found the end zone just once on their final 10 possessions. Linebacker Evan Hoffman led the way with a career-high 14 tackles, while linebackers Nolan Robinson and Jeff Sanders added 11 and 10 stops, respectively. He has guided the Statesmen to all six of the program s postseason appearances. Both teams finished with a 5-1 conference record, but the Dutchmen earned the League s automatic bid by virtue of their victory over Hobart. It s the sixth time since 1998 that Hobart has captured at least a share of the league title. string of success: The Statesmen have posted 10 consecutive winning seasons, the longest string of success in the program s 113 seasons. Purdie matched that tackle total last weekend against Rochester. a leg up: Junior punter Dominick Ancona earned first-team All-Liberty League honors this season after leading the League in punting (41.0 yds/p). He has dropped 12 punts inside the opponent s 20-yard line and boomed nine punts 50 yards or more, including a League-long 65-yarder on Nov. 4. Ancona has been named the Liberty League Special Teams Performer of the Week three times this season. SCOUTING THE profs: Rowan earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by capturing the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship. The Profs are averaging yards of offense (104.7 rush/136.7 pass), while allowing just (32.0/134.1). Rowan is second in the nation in total defense, third in rushing defense, and sixth in pass efficiency defense. Chris Pinto leads the vaunted D with 70 tackles, while Keith Heimerl keys a relentless pass rush with eight sacks. Dawaine Whetstone is among the national leaders in interceptions (6, 15th) and passes defended (16, 10th). Offensively, Mike Orihel has thrown for 1,216 yards and eight touchdowns. Dustin Katcher is his top target with 25 receptions for 212 yards, while Davon Edwards leads the ground game with 414 yards and four touchdowns.
