1 RULES AND REGULATIONS 1. DATE OF COMPETITION The School of Law Christ University National Moot Court Competition, 2014 shall be held from 4 to 7 September LANGUAGE The language of the Competition shall be English. 3. ELIGIBILITY Law schools/colleges recognised by the Bar Council of India are eligible to participate in the School of Law Chirst University National Moot Court Competition, The participants should currently be pursuing their Bachelor s degree in Law i.e., Three Year or Five Year LL.B course. 4. TEAM COMPOSITION There shall be three members, two speakers and a researcher in a team. 5. REGISTRATION The team participating is required to duly fill the Provisional Online Registration Form provided along with the by 30 th July 2014 and upload an attested scanned copy of the Demand Draft with the team details by 10 th August A registration fee of Rs.3,000/- shall be sent through Demand Draft in favour of Christ University payable at Bangalore along with the attested printout of the Online Registration Form. Each team shall be allotted a Team Code on the receipt of Online Registration Form. Spot registration shall not be entertained. 6. STRUCTURE OF THE ROUNDS The oral rounds shall comprise of- A. Preliminary Rounds

2 B. Quarter-Final Rounds C. Semi-Final Rounds D. Final Round A. PRELIMANARY ROUNDS There shall be two Preliminary Rounds. Every team shall be given the opportunity to argue each side in the Preliminary Rounds which shall be determined by a draw of lots. Each team will be given a total of 20 minutes to present their case which includes rebuttal and sur-rebuttal. The division of time between the speakers is at the discretion of the team members, subject to a maximum of 12 minutes for any one speaker. Each team shall indicate to the court- clerk the allocation of its 20 minutes. The top 8 teams based on cumulative marks (written and submissions) shall qualify for the Quarter-Final Rounds. B. QUARTER-FINAL ROUNDS Qualifying teams shall argue only for one side in the Quarter Finals. The side to be represented by the team shall be determined by a draw of lots. Each team shall get a total of 25 minutes to present their case. This time will include rebuttal and sur-rebuttal. The division of time between the speakers is at the discretion of the team members, subject to a maximum of 15 minutes for any one speaker. Each team shall indicate the time allocation to the court clerk. The Quarter Final Rounds shall be in the form and nature of Knockout Round. Teams with the higher speaker score average from each match-up shall receive a win point and move to the Semi Finals. On the basis of knockout, 4 teams shall advance to the Semi-Final Rounds.

3 C. SEMI FINAL ROUNDS Qualifying team shall argue only for one side in the Semi Finals. The side to be represented by the team shall be determined by a draw of lots. Each team shall get a total of 30 minutes to present their case. This time will include rebuttal and sur-rebuttal. The division of time between the speakers is the discretion of the team members, subject to a maximum of 17 minutes for any one speaker. Each team shall indicate to the court clerk the time allocation. On the basis of knock out, 2 teams shall advance to the finals. In case of a tie in any round, the teams shall advance to the next round on the basis of highest memorial score. D. FINALS Each team shall get a total of 40 minutes to present their case. This time will include rebuttal and sur-rebuttal. The division of the time is the discretion of the team members, subject to a maximum of 25 minutes for any one speaker (including rebuttal and surrebuttal time). 7. WRITTEN SUBMISSIONS All participating teams shall submit 6 sets of memorials (6 Petitioners and 6 Respondent memorials). The cover page of the memorials for the Petitioners shall be in Blue and the Respondents shall be in Red. The teams shall not indicate their names or the names of their College or University on the memorials. The Team Code allotted to the teams will have to be indicated at the top right corner of the memorials. All participating teams must submit a soft copy of their memorials in PDF format, for both the sides by 11:55pm on 25 August 2014 Teams must send 3 hard copies of the memorials ( 3 sets i.e., 3 Appellant and 3 Respondent Memorials) by 30 August 2014

4 Teams must also bring 3 more hard copies of the memorials ( 3 sets i.e., 3 Appellant and 3 Respondent Memorials) which should be submitted to the Organising Committee during the registration process on 4 September 2014 The hard copies must be exact print outs of the soft copies. Non-compliance with this will entail disqualification. The written memorials shall conform to the below mentioned standards: 1. Written submissions shall be printed on white standard A4 size sheet. 2. The font and size of the text used in all the parts of the written submissions (except the covers) shall be in Times New Roman, 12 point and footnotes shall be in Times New Roman, size The text in all the parts of each written submission shall have 1.5 line spacing except the text of the footnotes and the headings which shall be single spaced. 4. The comprehensive arguments with appropriate citations shall be contained in the pleadings. The teams shall follow the 19 th Edition of Bluebook mode of citation. 5. The pleadings shall not exceed 20 pages. The written submission shall include the following: 1. Cover Page 2. Table of Contents 3. Index of Authorities 4. Statement of Jurisdiction 5. Statement of Facts 6. Questions Presented 7. Summary of Pleadings 8. Pleadings 9. Prayer 10. Appendix (Optional) 8. MARKING CRITERIA FOR MEMORIALS Knowledge of facts and law (20) Proper and articulate analysis (20) Extent and use of research (20)

5 Clarity and Organization (20) Citation of sources (10) Grammar and Style (10) 9. MARKING CRITERIA FOR THE ORAL PRESENTATIONS Knowledge of Law (30) Application of Law to Facts (25) Ingenuity and ability to answer (30) Style, poise, courtesy and demeanour (10) Time management (5) 10. DRESS CODE The dress code for the competition is as follows: Gentlemen: Black Trousers, White Shirt, Black Blazer, Black necktie and Black formal shoes. Ladies: Black Trousers, White Shirt, Black Blazer and Black formal shoes. 11. AWARDS Winner Runners Up Best Memorial Best speaker Trophies shall be awarded to the Winner, Runners Up, Best Memorial and Best speaker. The Best speaker shall be based on the aggregate speaker scores obtained at the end of preliminary rounds. The prize money is as follows: Winners Rs 30, 000/- Runners Up Rs 20,000/- Best Memorial Rs 6,000/- Best Speaker Rs 6,000/-

6 Each team will be presented participation certificates and letters of Merit 12. ACCODOMATION All the participants from cities other than Bangalore shall be given accommodation by the University during the duration of the competition. Only the registered three member team shall be provided with accommodation. Any other additional member shall make their own accommodation arrangements. 13. MISCELLANEOUS Scouting shall result in immediate disqualification of the team. In case of odd number of teams, Christ University shall constitute a team just for the preliminary rounds to avoid ex parte proceedings. Any clarification shall be addressed to moot@law.christuniversity.in All the memorials submitted shall become the property of the college. 14. Any disputes about the competition shall be referred to the Organizing Committee. In all matters of complaints or disputes the decision of the Organizing Committee shall be final.
