SCOUTING OKLAHOMA The Sooners, who were picked to finish third in the Big 12 this fall, return 19 letterwinners from last year s squad that posted a mark. Oklahoma has notched double-digit wins in each of the last two seasons under fifth-year head coach Matt Potter, who guided the Sooners to the program s third NCAA Tournament appearance in South Carolina defeated Oklahoma in overtime, 2-1, at Stone Stadium last season in the first meeting between the two. Junior midfielder Lindsey Lane delivered the game-winner, tallying a dramatic goal in the 106th minute. SCOUTING TULSA The Golden Hurricane notched 13 wins in 2015, their most in a season since Tulsa returns eight starters from a year ago, including leading goalscorer Rachel Thun. Thun totaled 22 points on seven goals and eight assists as a sophomore last season, while fellow returnee Christina Holmes boasted 12 points on six goals. The Golden Hurricane, who defeated the Gamecocks, 2-0, in the teams only meeting in 1997, have finished with a winning record in seven of eight years under coach Kyle Cussen. GUESS WHO S BACK South Carolina returns four of its five leading scorers from a year ago, including junior forward and 2015 NSCAA Third-Team All-American Savannah McCaskill. McCaskill notched 29 points on 10 goals and nine assists last season, finishing with the team lead in points for the second-straight fall. Senior captain Chelsea Drennan enters her final season at South Carolina four assists short of the program record (33). She led the Gamecocks in assists in each of her first three seasons, and the midfielder was one of four players to total double-digit points (12) last fall. Sophie Groff tallied six goals in each of the last two seasons, and her 15 scores are tied with McCaskill for the most among active players. Groff found the back of the net in South Carolina s exhibition against High Point (Aug. 13) in her first game action since tearing her ACL last fall during the season. Drennan s 29 assists are four short of the program record, and she is three game-winning assists away from matching another school record. McCaskill needs just two more assists to move into the top five, and the forward s first goal of the season will give her 16 for her career and move her into the top 10 in school history. PRESEASON SEC The SEC coaches selected South Carolina to finish fourth in the league with Florida, Texas A&M and Auburn claiming the top three spots. The Gamecocks defeated the Aggies and Tigers at home last season, and South Carolina and Florida have split their last six matches, with five of the contests decided by one goal. Five Gamecocks were named to the SEC Preseason Watch List seniors Kaleigh Kurtz, Paige Bendell, Chelsea Drennan and Sophie Groff along with junior Savannah McCaskill. This fall marks the third-straight year that Drennan and McCaskill landed on the list. RANKINGS For the third-straight year, South Carolina will open its season ranked in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll. The Gamecocks checked in at No. 24 in the organization s first set of rankings that were released on Aug. 2. Other SEC schools that were ranked include No. 7 Florida, No. 8 Texas A&M, No. 12 Auburn and No. 22 Ole Miss. The Gamecocks also received votes in TopDrawerSoccer.com s preseason rankings. READY FOR THE CAMERA Three South Carolina women s soccer matches will be broadcast nationally on the SEC Network this fall. All three contests will come against opponents ranked in the NSCAA Preseason Poll - Sept. 18 at 12th-ranked Auburn, Sept. 29 at No. 8 Texas A&M and Oct. 16 against No. 7 Florida. EXHIBITION PLAY South Carolina kicked off its 2016 campaign with a 2-0 win over High Point in its lone exhibition match. Seniors Sophie Groff and Kaleigh Kurtz netted goals for the Gamecocks, while newcomer Mikayla Krzeczowski and redshirt freshman Hunter Peifer split time in net. UP NEXT The Gamecocks home opener is set for Thu., Aug. 25, against NC State. The match, which kicks off at 7 p.m. ET, can be seen on SEC Network+, available online through WatchESPN.
