Sept. 16, p.m. No. 20 South Carolina returns to Stone Stadium Thursday night in a highly anticipated match against No. 23 Minnesota at 7 p.m. The game against the nationally-ranked Golden Gophers marks the fourth time in the last two seasons that Stone Stadium will serve as host to a battle of two nationally-ranked women s soccer teams. Last season, South Carolina went against nationally-ranked opponents at The Graveyard. The Gamecocks defeated No. 17 UCF (1-0) on Sept. 18, 2009 in what was the first ever matchup of ranked women s soccer foes in Columbia. South Carolina then went on to host No. 12 Rutgers (1-0) and No. 14 Wake Forest (0-1) in the NCAA Second and Third Rounds. MOLLIE PATTON S COUNTDOWN TO 33 Heading into Thursday night s match, senior goalkeeper Mollie Patton has 27 career solo shutouts at South Carolina. Her 27 shutouts are six shy of tying the SEC record of 33, held by Megan Rivera of Auburn ( ). She already holds the SEC records for consecutive shutouts (7) and single-season shutouts (15), and was already the South Carolina all-time record holder before the season began. The Gamecocks and Demon Deacons met in last year s NCAA Round of 16 match with Wake Forest claiming the 1-0 victory off a literal last-second header for a goal at 89:59. SCOUTING MINNESOTA Minnesota continues to improve in the seventh season under head coach Mikki Denney Wright. After being snubbed for a bid to the NCAA Tournament last season despite a record, the Golden Gophers have gotten off to a strong start in 2010 and bring a record into Stone Stadium. Unbeaten since dropping the season opener to Notre Dame, Minnesota features a balanced scoring attack that goes along with solid play in goal by sophomore Cat Parkhill (0.62 GAA). Six Golden Gophers have scored two or more goals this season. The team took a blow at the start of the month when MAC Hermann Trophy Award candidate Jennie Clark broke her collarbone during practice, keeping the All-Region senior defender out of the lineup. SCOUTING WAKE FOREST Wake Forest plays High Point Friday night and are coming off a disappointing overtime loss to Villanova, 3-2. The Demon Deacons have played two other SEC teams so far this season, earning a 3-1 victory against LSU and a 2-0 win against Kentucky. Coach Tony da Luz s young team is averaging 2.5 goals a game and are led by a pair of freshmen in Rachel Nuzzolese (5g, 4a, 14p) and Katie Stengel (6g, 1a, 13p). Senior goalkeeper Amanda Barasha has played once this season while recovering from a preseason injury, but freshman Aubrey Bledsoe has performed well with a 1.14 GAA and two shutouts. SENIOR CLASS SETS THE BAR HIGH The 2009 senior class left Columbia as the winningest senior class in program history, but the 2010 class can claim that distinction with another solid year. The Class of 09 held a (.674) record, the most wins and best win-percentage for a South Carolina senior class. The Class of 10 currently claims a career record of (.701) and also has the chance to become the first class to advance to the NCAA Tournament all four years. HOME AT THE STONE South Carolina has been nearly unstoppable at Stone Stadium the past three seasons, posting a record at home since The streak included a 15-game unbeaten streak from Aug. 31, 2006-Oct. 5, 2007 and a 13-game unbeaten streak at The Graveyard from Oct. 19, Oct. 23, The lone blemishes on the record are a double-overtime loss to Vanderbilt (Oct. 7, 2007), a loss to #7 Florida (Oct. 30, 2008), the NCAA Third Round thriller against #14 Wake Forest (Nov. 20, 2009) and a loss to Louisville earlier this season. Carolina went at Stone Stadium last season. IN THE POLLS South Carolina is ranked No. 20 in the NSCAA coaches poll, a jump of one spot from last week. The team is also ranked No. 21 by Soccer Times and is 16th in TopDrawerSoccer s projections. Prior to this season, the Gamecocks had never played Northeastern, Ohio, Arizona State or Minnesota. The team is this year against first time opponents after defeating Northeastern (3-0) and Ohio (2-0) while drawing Arizona State (1-1). In 2009, Carolina went against first time opponents, defeating Louisville (3-0), Cincinnati (4-0), UCF (1-0), South Alabama (6-1) and Rutgers (1-0). AU SO GOOD! Freshman Danielle Au had an impact weekend at the Carolina s Cup with two goals, including the game-winner against Furman in overtime. She became the first Gamecock freshman to score a golden goal since Lexi Tourtellotte (the only other to achieve the feat) did it against Evansville (Oct. 16, 1995) - a span of 15 seasons and 56 overtime games. For her efforts, Au was named the tournament MVP and picked up SEC Freshman of the Week and CollegeSoccer360. com Primetime Performer of the Week honors. FAHEY RETURNS Junior defender Ellen Fahey missed the Gamecock Courtyard Cup after suffering an injury against Northeastern, and the leader at centerback was missed in the team s first game without her - a 1-0 loss to Louisville at home. In fact, in the three games South Carolina has played without Fahey since 2008, the Gamecocks have gone 1-2-0, with losses against the Cardinal this year and LSU last year, and the lone win coming against Ohio this season. Fahey returned to the pitch against Arizona State and will be looked upon as the leader at centerback. KORTNEY RHOADES IS BACK AS WELL Junior midfielder Kortney Rhoades sat out the first four games of the season due to preseason surgery, but the regular starter made her 2010 debut against Arizona State with 17 minutes off the bench. Rhoades will be eased back into the lineup over the next few games. Her presence on the field adds another dimension to the Carolina attack as she brings another layer of creativity to go along with that of Kayla Grimsley up top. NEW-LOOK GRIMSLEY Junior Kayla Grimsley, an All-American candidate at forward, has been called upon to play many roles for the youthful Gamecocks in 2010, Already one of the most prolific scorers in Gamecock history, Grimsley has added to her M.O. as a distributionist as well. With four assists already on the season - three coming on game-winning goals - Grimsley moves to No. 2 on the South Carolina all-time list with 17 in her career, behind the 24 put up by Mindy Sanders from Already in the Carolina top three in nearly every offensive category (including goals, assists and points), Grimsley entered the season with the freshman (6) and sophomore (7) records for single-season assists. She needs just two more to also set the junior record. HENRY FILLS IN ADMIRABLY Sophomore defender Dani Henry took upon one of the most high-profile jobs this year when she was called to fill in the centerback spot vacated by the graduation of consensus All-American Blakely Mattern. Henry, a top 150 recruit coming out of high school, has played every minute of the season in the spot beside Ellen Fahey. WATTS PLAYS AROUND THE PITCH Sophomore Christine Watts played all 25 games last season at midfield as the team s top reserve before starting the first two games this year at the same position. However, she s taken up a new position as the team s starting right back defender. Watts initially filled in following the injury to Ellen Fahey, and her performance forced the coaches to reshuffle the lineup when Fahey returned to keep Watts starting on the backline. She s contributed two assists so far in her new position this year. SINCLAIR STARTS Freshman midfielder Elizabeth Sinclair is a Gamecock to keep your eyes on. She immediately impressed with her work ethic and skills, taking her all of two games to crack the starting 11 in the spot vacated by the graduation of All-SEC performer Kim Miller. Sinclair brings the same all-around presence to the field that Miller gave the Gamecocks as a four-year starter. McGOWAN DEBUTS Freshman Samantha McGowan had her collegiate debut against Furman and performed well at forward with two shots. The Canadian national is a goal-scoring threat up top with her height and strength, and is rebounding from an ACL tear suffered last year in high school. PADUA PALS Three starters for South Carolina played their high school soccer together at Padua Academy in Wilmington, Del. The Rhoades sisters - Brittiny and Kortney - have been regular starters since stepping onto campus. In addition, fellow starter Dani Henry also played at Padua with the Rhoades sisters. The 2010 season marks the first year that all three will start for South Carolina CAROLINASoccer -4- GAMECOCKSonline.com

Candidates are chosen based on their dedication and achievement in four areas: Classroom, Character, Community and Competition. Patton had a record-breaking junior campaign in which she set the South Carolina and SEC records for single-season (15) and consecutive (7) shutouts. She finished the year ranked third in the nation with 15 solo shutouts, third nationally with 19 wins and 10th nationally with a 0.52 goals against average. Patton was an NSCAA All-South Region Second-Team selection, a Third- Team NSCAA Scholar All-American and a Second-Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection. KAYLA GRIMSLEY: MAC HERMANN TROPHY AWARD WATCH LIST Junior forward Kayla Grimsley has been named as one of 45 players selected to the 2010 Watch List for the Missouri Athletic Club s (MAC) Hermann Trophy, the top individual award presented in intercollegiate soccer. The winner of the award is selected through voting by the members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Voting for the MAC Hermann Trophy is conducted in late November, when a field of 15 semifinalists is reduced to three finalists. Each January, the winners are honored at an annual banquet at the MAC, located in downtown St. Louis. Grimsley s appearance marks the first time a Gamecock has been selected as a candidate for the prestigious award. The honor comes on the heels of being selected for the Preseason All-SEC team. She is a two-time postseason All-SEC selection, a TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Season selection. GLEMSER S GAME Sophomore Ali Glemser grabbed her first career goal in Carolina s 3-0 win at Northeastern by scoring in the 33rd minute. She then hit the game-winner in the 2-0 victory against Ohio, marking a strong start to her second year. Glemser adds a versatile presence to the pitch with her ability to play at forward or on the backline, and may be used at both throughout the year. GILBERT GOES FOR GOLD Freshman defender Gabrielle Gilbert had a strong opening week for the Gamecocks in her collegiate debut. The Canadian national earned starts against Boston and Northeastern at right back and hit the game-winning goal against the Terriers to become the first true freshman to score a game-winning goal on the season opening weekend since Melinda Carter scored the GWG against Davidson on Sept. 1, LOVEABLE LOLLY Junior midfielder Lolly Holland picked a perfect day to score her second career goal, sliding in a shot in the 82nd minute to defeat Boston University 1-0 in the season opener. Holland will be looked upon to play an increased role in 2010 and came through in the early going with the goal. She also had an uncredited assist in the win against Northeastern two days later. BREAKING STREAKS IN BOSTON South Carolina opened the year with back-to-back road shutouts against Boston University and Northeastern, ending long home winning streaks for each team. South Carolina s victory at Boston ended a 20-game winning streak for the Terriers at Nickerson Field, dating back to the 2008 season opener. The victory against Northeastern ended a home unbeaten streak for the Huskies who had not lost a home game since October of 2008 and had not been shutout in 17 games. PATTON NAMED SEC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Senior goalkeeper Mollie Patton had a strong weekend for the Gamecocks by posting two shutouts and collecting 13 total saves in South Carolina s season opening trip to Boston. Patton collected five saves and grabbed the shutout against 2009 NCAA Tournament team Boston University, becoming the first goalkeeper to shutout the Terriers at their home field since their 2008 season opener, a span of 20 straight games. Patton then tied a career high with eight saves and posted a shutout against Northeastern, becoming the first goalkeeper to shutout the Huskies at their home field in 17 games. The honor is her second career SEC Defensive Player of the Week honor. RHOADES EARNS NATIONAL HONOR Senior defender Brittiny Rhoades was honored by being selected to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week after South Carolina s opening week in Boston. Rhoades, a former Freshman All-American, will be counted upon to lead the Gamecock defense that has been ranked in the SEC s top two every season since 2007, her first year playing for the Gamecocks. Rhoades is Carolina s top lockdown defender, a set piece specialist and brings tremendous onthe-ball skills, a trait that allows the team to push her up top as opportunities present themselves CAROLINASoccer -5- GAMECOCKSonline.com

Since the Preseason All- SEC team debuted in 2007, the Gamecocks have had seven selections, a number that ties Tennessee for second-most in the conference. Grimsley (Lakeland, Fla.) earns her second consecutive appearance on the preseason list and is an All-America candidate in She is a two-time All-SEC selection, a TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Season selection and returns for her junior season after one of the top all-around performances in Gamecock history. She became just the fifth player at South Carolina to hit double-digit goals in a season and finished with 13 goals and seven assists for 33 points. She finished first in the SEC in goals, second in points and fifth in assists, while coming just one point short of setting the South Carolina single-season record. Grimsley started the season with a record nine-match scoring streak and spent parts of the summer training with the U.S. U-20 and U-23 national teams. Rhoades (Wilmington, Del.) earns her first preseason honor and continues a tradition with at least one Gamecock defender earning a nod on the preseason list. She has started 68 of 70 career games at left back in leading the Gamecocks to the best three-year period in program history. She was a 2007 Freshman All-American selection and has earned the reputation as Carolina s top lockdown defender since stepping onto campus. She returns as the leader of a defense that finished last season ranked eighth nationally and posted a school-record 15 shutouts. COACHES TAB GAMECOCKS FOURTH IN SEC EAST The Southeastern Conference coaches have selected South Carolina to finish third in the SEC Eastern division this year. The Gamecocks are coming off a record in 2009 with a second place finish in the SEC East (7-3-1) and a berth in the NCAA Round of 16. Florida was selected as the favorite to win the SEC title this year with 11 of 12 first-place votes cast for the Gators. South Carolina received the other first-place vote for the East and SEC overall titles, marking the first year that the defending SEC Tournament champions received a vote for the overall title. In the East, No. 11 Florida was followed by Georgia, No. 12 South Carolina, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Kentucky. Auburn was the favorite to win the West, followed by LSU, Ole Miss, Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi State. Points were compiled on a basis for each division, though each coach was not allowed to vote for their own team. EXCEEDING EXPECATIONS For the fourth consecutive year Coach Shelley Smith s 2009 squad exceeded preseason expectations by finishing strong in conference play. Picked by the coaches to finish last in 2006, the Gamecocks earned fifth in the Eastern division. Picked to finish last in the East in the 2007 SEC Preseason poll, the Gamecocks tied a program record for wins en route to a fourth place division finish. Carolina was picked fourth in the 2008 preseason poll and again improved in the standings with a third place finish in the Eastern division. Coach Smith s team was again picked fourth in 2009 and responded with an SEC East runner-up finish that earned her SEC Coach of the Year honors CAROLINASoccer -6- GAMECOCKSonline.com

18 Shelley Smith 10th Season Shelley Smith enters her tenth season at the helm of the USC women s soccer program after turning the Gamecocks into conference and national title contenders with three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Smith moved Carolina into the upper echelon of programs after guiding the Gamecocks in 2009 to the program s first SEC title and a berth in the NCAA Round of 16, earning her SEC Coach of the Year and NSCAA South Region Coach of the Year honors. South Carolina was a No. 2 national seed in the tournament and finished with a record, the best in school history. The team s conference record was also a program best, and four players earned All-SEC honors. The Gamecocks finished as one of the top defensive teams in the nation with a school record 15 shutouts, led by Mattern on the backline who was a consensus first team All-American in her final season. Grimsley finished the year with 33 points and was named an honorable mention All- American by Top Drawer Soccer. The team finished eighth in the nation in average attendance. Carolina s success in the classroom also continued last season as her squad earned two Academic All-District honors in Mattern and Mollie Patton for the second consecutive year. Mattern was also named to the Academic All-America first team, making South Carolina one of only four teams in the nation - and the only in the SEC - to have an Academic All-American selected each of the past five seasons. Her team was also honored with its eighth NSCAA Team Academic Award. Smith has coached 131 SEC Academic Honor Roll recipients since coming to USC in Smith has coached several top student-athletes at Carolina including Ashley Kirk, USC s first fourtime All-SEC honoree, Carolina s first All-American in four-time All-SEC selection Blakely Mattern and two-time All-SEC performers Melinda Carter, Jessica Julin, Kayla Grimsley and Sarah Lentz. Julin is currently the captain of the Finland National Team and Carter played in the WUSA. The Gamecocks have earned 24 All-SEC honors in the last nine years. In her first season as head coach at Carolina (2001), the Gamecocks were the third most improved team in the nation with an overall record. Carolina also had one of the school s best home records, going 5-3 at Stone Stadium, allowing opponents to score only four goals in eight matches. The success continued for USC in 2002 with 13 wins in Smith s second season. The year was highlighted with USC s first ever victories against Florida and Kentucky. Smith also led her team to ties against 2002 SEC champion Auburn and Eastern Division champion Tennessee. Smith led the Gamecocks to another successful season in 2003 with 10 wins including a USC record eight-game unbeaten streak as well as a record at home in Stone Stadium. The 2004 season featured a win over No. 7 Clemson, the Gamecocks first win over a ranked opponent since 1998, as well as a 6-3 mark in nonconference action. Ashley Kirk also became the first freshman soccer player in school history to be named SEC Freshman of the Year. In addition, Carolina set a school record for a home gamewinning streak with six consecutive wins. Following an injury filled 2005 season, the program took a big step forward in 2006 as USC went undefeated at home for the first time in school history with an mark at Stone Stadium. The season culminated with the Gamecocks advancing to the SEC Tournament semifinals for the first time in Carolina history, as Blakely Mattern became the team s first Freshman All-America selection since The 2007 season marked the official turning point of the program, tying the school record with 14 victories and advancing to the NCAA Tournament for only the second time in program history. Carolina posted a overall record including a mark in the SEC after beginning the season by becoming the first team ever to knock off defending national champion and topranked North Carolina in a season opening game at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill. The Gamecocks ran to a start to the season and peaked at No. 7 in the national polls. For the second consecutive season South Carolina advanced to the SEC Tournament semifinals after knocking off Tennessee for the first time in program history and earned the school s first bid to the NCAA Tournament since Blakely Mattern became the first sophomore to ever earn SEC Defensive Player of the Year honors in addition to becoming the first All-American in South Carolina history. Smith cemented Carolina s position as a conference title contender and player on the national stage after guiding the Gamecocks in 2008 to their second consecutive NCAA Tournament bid and third consecutive SEC Tournament bid. The Gamecocks went overall and earned five SEC wins for the third year in a row with only one senior on the roster. Respected as a top defensive team, the Gamecocks finished the regular season second in the SEC with eight shutouts and ranked in the top two in every major defensive category including goals allowed, points allowed, shots allowed and shots on goal allowed. Besides her collegiate coaching, Smith was a member of the Region III ODP staff for the past five years, as well as an assistant for the `90 Regional Team.
