Aubrey Bledsoe made four saves to earn the shutout. Seven different Demon Deacons earned a point and Katie Stengel led the way with two goals as Wake Forest routed UNCG 5-0. It was Wake s first five-goal victory in two seasons. Devin Prendergast scored on a 30-yard blast in the 84th minute to give the Huskies a 2-1 win over the Deacons. Alisha Woodson score Wake s lone goal, the second of her career Katie Stengel scored Wake Forest s first hat trick since 2008 to lead the Deacons to a 3-0 win. Rachel Nuzzolese scored the game-winning goal eight minutes into the first overtime period to give the Demon Deacons a 2-1 victory in their first overtime game of the 2011 season. Wake Forest earned its highest-ranked victory since 2004, shutting out No. 3 Florida State 2-0 in its ACC opener. Katie Stengel scored both Deacon goals, and Aubrey Bledsoe earned the shutout in net. Ally Berry notched the first multi-point game of her career, scoring the game-winning goal and assisting on Katie Stengel s score, to hand the Demon Deacons a 2-0 road victory over South Carolina. The Demon Deacons are unbeaten in 14 straight matches against the Wolfpack dating back to 1998, their longest active unbeaten streak against any opponent. Wake Forest holds a advantage all-time against Miami, with all meetings coming since the Hurricanes joined the ACC in The Deacons scored a 3-1 win in Coral Gables last season. The Demon Deacons and Hokies played to a thrilling 3-3 overtime draw last season in Blacksburg. Wake has a advantage in the series with Virginia Tech, but has not won since Wake Forest has played five overtime games against Virginia, tied with Duke and Florida State for its most against one opponent. Four previous matches with the Cavaliers have gone to double overtime. The Deacs and Terps last met in the 2010 ACC Championship Match. Katie Stengel scored Wake s lone goal as the match went to a shootout tied 1-1, and Aubrey Bledsoe made three PK saves to give Wake the title. The last match between North Carolina and Wake Forest came in the 2010 ACC Semifinals, with the Deacons advancing on penalty kicks. Wake kept UNC out of the ACC Championship match for the first time ever. Wake Forest posted its first-ever road win over Duke in 2010, topping the Blue Devils 2-1 on the strength of two blistering free kick goals from Rachel Nuzzolese. The Demon Deacons rolled to a 4-0 home victory over Clemson last season, their largest margin of victory of the ACC season. It came with a cost though as Rachel Nuzzolese suffered a torn ACL in the contest. The Demon Deacons have fallen in overtime to Boston College in backto-back seasons. Last year, Wake Forest dropped a 2-1 decision at Spry Stadium. Wake Forest stormed through the 2010 ACC Championships to capture its first-ever conference crown. This year, the Deacs will look to become the first side other than UNC to defend their title. Wake Forest has earned an NCAA Tournament bid in 15 consecutive seasons, the seventh-longest active streak in the nation and third-longest in the ACC behind only North Carolina and Virginia. 3 Deacons Earn Highest-Ranked Win Since 2004 Katie Stengel scored twice and the Wake Forest defense earned yet another shutout as the Demon Deacons topped No. 3 Florida State 2-0 last week at Spry Stadium. The No. 3 Seminoles were the highest-ranked win for Wake Forest since 2004, when they topped a No. 3 Virginia side. Stengel s first goal came just before halftime when she ran onto a long ball from Alisha Woodson and hit a one-timer past FSU keeper Kelsey Wys. Her second came in the 57th minute, when she got under a cross from Jackie Logue that was set up by Riley Ridgik and heading into the back of the net. The Deacons followed up the conference opener with a 2-0 win on the road at South Carolina on Sunday. Stengel and Ally Berry scored for the Deacs, with Berry also earning an assist for her first-career multi-point game. Stengel Among ACC and National Leaders Katie Stengel has continued her scoring tear to start the season and remains alone atop the conference scoring and points charts with 11 goals and 25 points, numbers that also put her among the Division I leaders. Katie Stengel s rampage through the Wake Forest record books has rolled on this season. Her 11 goals in nine games this season put her on pace to shatter the single-season record of 16 that she herself set as a freshman last year. In fact, only three other Demon Deacons have scored more goals in an entire season than Stengel has in less than half of the 2011 campaign. Perhaps even more remarkable, in only a season and a half in the Old Gold and Black, Stengel is already high up the Wake Forest career scoring charts. Her 27 goals are the sixth most in a career for any Wake Forest player. She needs only nine more goals to tie Jill Hutchinson s career record of 36 goals. Bl e d s o e s Si x t h Sh u t o u t Cl i m b s Wa k e Fo r e s t Ch a r t s Helped by an experienced back line of lockdown defenders, goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe has kept six clean sheets through the Deacons first nine games and her 0.44 goals against average is the second-best in the ACC and 13th-best nationally. Bledsoe s six shutouts less than halfway through the season, already rank her sixth on the Wake Forest single-season charts and career charts. In contrast, the Deacs kept only four clean sheets all of last season. Wake Forest Single-Season Shutout Records Rank Name, Year shutouts 1. Erin Regan (1999) 9 2. Kenna Healy (2003) 8 3. The Pack s best wins of the year have come against LSU and VCU. Stephanie Bronson and Alex Berger have scored five goals apiece this season, with Bronson leading NC State with 12 points. Kim Kern has started every game in goal for the Pack, holding a 1.12 GAA and a.810 save percentage. Scouting the Hurricanes Miami enters the weekend with a (1-0-0 ACC) record. The Canes are winners of seven straight after dropping their season opener to Florida, and last week won their ACC opener against Clemson in double-overtime. In fact, the Hurricanes have won their last three games in double OT, against Florida Gulf Coast, Clemson and Navy. Kate Howarth has been the primary scorer for Miami this season, totalling seven goals and 17 points. Tara Schwitter has also chipped in four goals and nine points for the Canes. Viki Alonzo has started every game in net for Miami, holding a 0.78 goals against average and a.829 save percentage. Of those 14 games, 13 of them have been Wake Forest wins, with the Wolfpack s lone result during the streak coming in a 1-1 tie in Wake Forest survived a scare from NC State last season as the Pack took the game to overtime at Spry Stadium before Jackie Logue scored the game-winner eight minutes into the extra frame Individual Awards Katie Stengel 2x ACC Player of the Week (8/23, 9/20) NSCAA National Player of the Week (9/21) Soccer America National Player of the Week (9/20) Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week (8/22) Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week (9/19) CS360.com Primetime Performer of the Week (8/22) CS360.com Primetime Performer of the Week (9/21) MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List 2011 Soccer America Preseason All-America Wake Forest Nike Challenge All-Tournament Team Hilton Garden Hokie Invitational All-Tournament Team Jackie Logue Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week (9/19) Jordan Feger Hilton Garden Hokie Invitational All-Tournament Team Kristen Meier Wake Forest Nike Challenge All-Tournament Team Rachel Nuzzolese Hilton Garden Hokie Invitational All-Tournament Team 4

5 It was the first mult-point game of Berry s career, and first points for the junior since the end of the 2009 season. She missed all of last year with a torn ACL. Knock On Wood-son, Alisha Keeps Scoring Primarily known as a steady defender, Alisha Woodson has found a scoring touch this season, scoring two goals and five points in the Demon Deacons last six games. Woodson got on the scoresheet most recently in the Deacons win over No. 3 Florida State, playing a 30-yard long ball that set up Katie Stengel for the game-winning goal. Woodson has also scored two goals herself this season, both coming off of corner kicks. Nuzzolese Comes Through in the Clutch Rachel Nuzzolese has scored three goals this season, and all three of them have been game-winners, including two in tight one-goal games. Nuzzolese played the hero in the Deacons overtime victory over Nebraska, blasting a shot past Cornhusker keeper Emma Stevens from eight yards to hand the Deacons a 2-1 win. The sophomore also supplied the game-winner in Wake s 1-0 road victory over UCF with an absolute firecracker of a shot from 18 yards that flew into the upper corner of the net for the game s only goal. Deacon Force Field Wake Forest s most noticeable improvement this season has been defensively where an experienced defensive line of Jackie Logue, Alisha Woodson, Caralee Keppler and Amanda Howell has seen the Demon Deacons become one of the stingiest teams in the ACC. Wake Forest has allowed only four goals all season, the second-fewest of all ACC teams. The Deacs have been especially tight defensively to start games, having yet to allow a first-half goal all season. The lockdown defense has allowed Wake Forest to score the first goal in every match. The Deacs have only trailed once all season - the last 6:14 of their 2-1 loss to Connecticut. Noting the National Rankings Following impressive shutouts of then-no. 3 Florida State and South Carolina last week, Wake Forest vaulted up the national rankings, into the top-10 of all four major polls. The Deacons are ranked No. 7 nationally in the NSCAA poll, their highest mark since 2009 when they got as high as No. 5 in the national rankings - they re highest-ever ranking. Wake is also ranked No. 7 by Soccer America and Soccer Times, and No. 8 by Top Drawer Soccer. The Demon Deacons are one of six ACC teams to be ranked in the top-10 by at least one publication. Eight of the ACC s 11 teams are ranked in the top-15 The Three A-Knee-Gos In 2010, Ally Berry and Kelsey Zalimeni found themselves on the sidelines for the whole season as they recovered from torn ACLs. Rachel Nuzzolese joined them midway through the year after suffering a torn ACL of her own. In a testament to the advances of modern medicine, all three are back on the field for the Demon Deacons this season and have all made immediate impacts. Nuzzolese ranks second on the team with three goals this season, picking up on the first half of her freshman year where she scored nine goals in 11 games. Zalimeni has been perhaps the biggest surprise of the season for Wake. Known as a primarily defensive player, the sophomore is tied for second on the team with four points this year, coming on a goal and two assists. Berry has played in every match this year, and notched her first-career multi-point game against South Carolina, recording a goal and an assist. Da Lu z Am o n g t h e ACC s Best With the Deacons earning 13 wins last season, head coach Tony da Luz moved up to become the second-winningest coach in the history of ACC women s soccer. Da Luz has won 179 games at Wake Forest, the secondmost of any coach at an ACC school since 1987 when the conference recognized women s soccer as a sanctioned sport. Da Luz began the 2010 season as the third-winningest coach in the history of the league. With the Demon Deacons win over LSU on Sept. 3, 2010, he passed Bill Hempden, who accumulated 162 wins coaching Duke from , for second place. Da Luz, who has been the coach at Wake Forest since 1997, was named the 1998 ACC Coach of the Year. All-Time Winningest ACC Coaches Records since 1987 Name, School, Years Wins 1. Last year, Stengel became the first-ever Demon Deacon to be named a semifinalist for the award after scoring 16 goals and 37 points. She is now the first-ever Wake Forest player to make the Hermann Trophy Preseason Watch List. Voting for the MAC Hermann Trophy is conducted in late November by Division I head coaches who are members of the NSCAA, when a field of 15 semifinalists is reduced to three finalists. Those three will be invited to the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, where a news conference will be held to announce the winner, followed by a banquet to honor the three finalists. Stengel Earns Preseason All-America Honors Katie Stengel was named a 2011 Preseason All-American by Soccer America. She was one of only two sophomores on the 25 player team. Stengel is the first-ever Demon Deacon to earn Preseason All-America honors after last year becoming the first-ever Wake Forest freshman to be named an All-American at the end of the season. Logue is in her second season in a major leadership role after serving as co-captain with Bianca D Agostino last season. The Mount Laurel, N.J. native has appeared in every game of her college career so far, starting all but three of them. Logue has been a consistent performer on and off the pitch, making the 2010 NSCAA All-Southeast Region Team and the 2010 ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-District Team. Stengel Scores Eighth Hat Trick in School History Sophomore Katie Stengel has accomplished a number of impressive feats in her career, but she had never before scored a hat trick - until the Deacs took on Campbell on Sept. 4. Stengel scored three second-half goals against the Camels, the first two coming on good setups by Kristen Meier and the third the result of a pinpoint cross from Kelsey Zalimeni. The Melbourne, Fla. native s hat trick was the eighth in Wake Forest women s soccer history and the first since Sarah Winslow scored three times against UNC Wilmington in Wake s eight hat tricks have been scored by five different players. No Wake Forest player has ever scored more than three goals in a single game. The Melbourne, Fla. native traveled with the U-20 team to La Manga, Spain for a series of exhibition matches in March, earning two starts. Stengel s Firsts Katie Stengel s offensive dominance as a freshman last season was so unprecedented that it seemed like almost every day she accomplished something that no Wake Forest player of any class had done before. The following is a list of Stengel s trailblazing accomplishments in 2010: Set new Wake Forest single-season records with 16 goals and 37 points scored. Was the first-ever Wake Forest player to lead the ACC in goal scoring. Was named to the NSCAA s All-America Second Team, becoming the first Wake Forest player to make the NSCAA s All-America first or second teams. She was also the first Wake Forest freshman to earn All- America honors from any publication. First-ever Wake Forest player to be named a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy. Was named Top Drawer Soccer s National Rookie of the Year, becoming the first-ever Wake Forest women s soccer player to win national freshman of the year honors from any publication. U.S. National Team Farm Team From looking at the Wake Forest roster, you might think that the U.S. Soccer Federation decided to use the Demon Deacons as a place to stash their youth national team players. Six Deacons have experience with U.S. Youth National Teams, with three of them participating in national team training camps within the past year. Katie Stengel attended numerous camps with the U-20 National Team last spring and appears to be in the mix for a roster spot for the 2012 FIFA U-20 World Cup. Aubrey Bledsoe was called into training camp with the U-23 National Team in May. Bledsoe had previously spent time with the U-18 National Team in the summer of 2010, traveling with them to the La Manga Tournament in La Manga, Spain where she started all three games in goal for the U.S. Alisha Woodson joined Bledsoe at May s U-23 Team training camp. Woodson also has previous youth national team experience, having camped with the U-20 team in April of Rachel Nuzzolese has spent time with the U-18, U-17 and U-15 National Teams. She scored a hat trick for the U-17 Team during World Cup Qualifying in Trinidad in 2010, becoming the first-ever American to do so. She also was a part of the U-18 Team with Stengel and Bledsoe that traveled to La Manga, Spain in the summer of Freshman Lindsey Luke was a member of the U.S. U-18 Player Pool and camped with the U-18 Team in May of Annick McBryar who transferred to Wake Forest this summer, played for the U-14, U-15 and U-16 National Teams earlier in her career. Go i n g NCAA St r e a k i n g Wake Forest has received a bid to the NCAA Tournament in 15 straight seasons dating back to 1996, the sixth-longest active streak in the country. The Deacons have reached at least the second round in each of the past five seasons, including a program-best quarterfinal appearance in Among ACC teams, only North Carolina (29) and Virginia (17) have been to more consecutive NCAA Tournaments. 7 Stengel, Nuzzolese Make Top Drawer s Top 100 Demon Deacons Katie Stengel and Rachel Nuzzolese were listed in Top Drawer Soccer s preseason list of the Top 100 Upperclassmen to Watch after both finishing last season among the best freshmen in the country. Stengel was named National Rookie of the Year by Top Drawer Soccer in 2010 after finishing the season as the highest-scoring freshman in the country with 16 goals and 37 points. Nuzzolese scored nine goals in 11 games before suffering a season-ending injury in At the time of her injury, she was the highest-scoring freshman in the country and was ranked as high as the nation s seventh-best freshman by Top Drawer Soccer. Deacons are the Reigning ACC Champions In 2011, the Wake Forest women s soccer team enters the season as defending ACC champions for the first time in the history of the program. The Demon Deacons captured their first-ever conference crown by putting together a Cinderella run through the 2010 ACC Tournament, becoming the lowestseeded team ever to win the title. The Deacs headed to Cary, N.C., site of the 2010 tourney, as the No. 5 seed and opened tournament play with a convincing 3-1 shellacking of an less-than-full-strength Florida State side in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals they would face the bracket s No. 1 seed, 20-time champion North Carolina. Wake struck first on a Jackie McSally goal just after halftime and appeared headed for the victory before Meghan Klingenberg equalized three minutes from time for the Tar Heels, sending the game to overtime. After two scoreless periods, the match headed to a shootout where the Deacons went a perfect 5-for-5 on penalty kicks to advance to the championship match, keeping UNC out of the finals for the first time in the history of the tournament. The Deacons final opponent would be second-seeded Maryland. Ashley Grove struck in the fifth minute for the Terps, before Katie Stengel tied the game with a goal of her own in the 19th minute. The rest of the game saw no more scoring, putting the Demon Deacons in another penalty shootout. Goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe proved to be the hero, stopping three Terrapin penalty kicks to give Wake Forest it s first-ever ACC title. Stengel is Wake s Third ACC Rookie of the Year After leading the league in scoring, Katie Stengel was named ACC Rookie of the Year in 2010, making her the third Wake Forest player to win the award, and first in over a decade. The two previous Demon Deacons to earn ACC Rookie of the Year honors were Emily Taggert (1998) and Joline Charlton (1999). Taggert and Charlton both went on to have successful careers, with Taggert earning both All-ACC and All-Region honors in all four of her years at Wake Forest and Charlton twice making the all-conference team. Bledsoe is Reigning ACC Tourney MVP Aubrey Bledsoe had already had a stellar freshman year for Wake Forest by the time the 2010 ACC Tournament rolled around, starting more games than any freshman goalie in school history, but she took her game up a notch in the postseason, saving three of four penalty kicks in the championship game to give the Deacons their first ACC title. For her heroics, Bledsoe was named ACC Tournament MVP, becoming the first Demon Deacon to win the award. Maryland and Wake Forest played to a 1-1 tie through regulation and two overtime periods in the title match, leaving the championship to be decided by a shootout. The Terrapins kicked first, as Sade Ayinde stepped up to the spot and blasted a shot that Bledsoe got a hand on, but could not keep out of the net. Alisha Woodson evened the score with a successful attempt for the Deacs, and Bledsoe stoned Maryland s Olivia Wagner, Jasmyne Spencer and Domenica Hodak, with Katie Stengel and Bianca D Agostino converting for Wake, to give the Deacons the championship. Trial by Fire Few teams faced as difficult of a start to the season as Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons opened the year with three straight road games, all against teams that made the NCAA Tournament in 2010, but managed to win all of them to get off to a 3-0 start. The Deacons season opener came in a 4-1 road victory over preseason SEC West favorite Auburn. Wake then traveled to Orlando and scored a 1-0 victory over preseason Conference USA favorites Central Florida. Wake rounded out the three-game sweep with a commanding 5-0 victory over Southern Conference favorite UNC Greensboro. Wake Forest is the only team in the ACC to start the 2011 regular season with three road games. Florida State traveled to Oregon for two games to start the season before returning home. Wa k e Fo r e s t Pi c k e d to Finish Seventh in t h e ACC Wake Forest was picked to finish seventh in the Atlantic Coast Conference in a preseason vote of the league s head coaches. While that might seem a little low for a defending champion that returns eight starters, it s not necessarily a position the Deacons mind being in, given that they re exceeded the preseason prognostications the last two seasons. Last year, the Deacs were also picked to finish seventh, and ended up in fifth place after the regular season before making a run through the ACC Tournament to win the conference championship. In 2009, the Deacons were picked to finish sixth and ended up grinding out a fifth place finish. North Carolina was picked to finish first in this year s poll, earning seven first-place votes. Florida State came in second with four first-place votes, with Boston College following in third. Virginia occupied the fourth spot in the poll, and ACC runner-up Maryland was picked to finish fifth. 40 Years of Women s Athletics Throughout the season, Wake Forest will be celebrating its 40th Anniversary of Women s Athletic Programs. Women s sports gained varsity status at Wake Forest in 1971, when the school fielded women s basketball, golf, volleyball, field hockey, golf, tennis and track and field teams. Women s soccer was added at Wake Forest for the 1994 season. The Wake Forest Varsity Club will be honoring all current and former female student-athletes at its Varsity Club weekend, which will be held from Oct. 7-8 in conjunction with the football game against Florida State. A golf tournament, banquet and tailgate are planned. Deacons EArn TV Coverage in 2011 After a 2011 season that saw them win the program s first ACC title, the Wake Forest women s soccer team will have two of it s premiere home matches televised as part of the ACC s new television contract. 9 Tony THE Tony da Luz FILE Background Born August 30, 1961 Hometown San Diego, Calif. da luz Head Coach 15th Year San Diego, 1986 Tony da Luz is in his 15th season at the helm of the women s soccer team at Wake Forest University. He has led the Demon Deacons to an impressive streak of 14 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and under his tutelage, Wake Forest has never experienced a losing season. Under his guidance, 32 Deacs have earned All-ACC honors, including 10 first-team selections and three ACC Rookie of the Year winners. Da Luz has helped guide four Freshmen All-Americans and 11 to the ACC All-Freshman team, including one National Rookie of the Year winner. Also, 23 Deacs have been named All-Southeast Region and 12 have been selected to ACC Championship all-tournament teams, while the team has continually been ranked among the top-25 in the nation. Da Luz achieved what might be his most impressive accomplishment in 2010 when he guided a team that was picked to finish seventh in the preseason to the program s first-ever ACC Championship. Under his tutelage, freshman forwards Katie Stengel and Rachel Nuzzolese established themselves as one of the most dynamic striking duos in the nation. As a rookie, Stengel set new school records with 16 goals and 37 points and received numerous honors, including ACC Freshman of the Year and Top Drawer Soccer National Rookie of the Year. She became the first freshman in Wake Forest history to earn First Team All-ACC honors. Da Luz enjoyed one of his most successful seasons in 2009, as the Demon Deacons finished the year with a record, tying the school record for most wins in a season, and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. Wake Forest s national ranking was as high as No. 5 during the season, the highest ranking in program history, and the Deacs finished the year with a No. 8 national ranking. Goalkeepers Amanda Barasha and Laura Morse combined for a program record 15 clean sheets during the year. Led by All-Americans Kaley Fountain and Jill Hutchinson, Wake Forest easily advanced to the Round of 16 in the 2009 NCAA Tournament, picking up a pair of home victories with a 2-0 win against Kennesaw State and a 3-0 victory against West Virginia. Wake reached its first quarterfinal appearance in program history with a dramatic 1-0 win at South Carolina on Bess Harrington s header goal as time expired. The magical run came to an end in the quarters as Wake fell, 5-2, at eventual national champion North Carolina. Prior to coming to Wake Forest, da Luz coached five years at the University of San Diego, where he compiled a record. Da Luz was entrusted with starting the San Diego program from the ground up in 1992 and in his final two seasons he guided his teams to a mark.
