The Deacons and Big Green are both coming off narrow victories in the second round of the tournament. Wake Forest got an overtime goal from Cody Arnoux to defeat William & Mary 1-0 on Tuesday night, while Dartmouth needed penalty kicks to oust Boston College from the NCAA Tournament. Against William & Mary, Wake Forest had several near misses before Arnoux s golden goal. The Deacons found the crossbar twice and also hit the post on one shot. Freshman goalkeeper Doug Ryan got the victory, playing in the first game of his collegiate career after Akira Fitzgerald was injured midway through the second half. Ryan made a save in just over 31 minutes of action. Dartmouth enters the third round of the NCAA Tournament with an record. The No. 16 seed in the NCAA Tournament, the Big Green defeated Boston College on penalty kicks in the second round. Offensively, Dartmouth is led by Lucky Mkosana, who leads the team with 11 goals and 24 points on the season. Craig Henderson and Andrew Olsen are tied for the team lead in assists with five each. Sean Milligan has been stellar in goal all season for the Big Green, posting a 0.81 goals against average. Milligan has made 62 stops on the season and has seven clean sheets. Wake Forest and Dartmouth are meeting for just the second time in series history. The Big Green won the only other meeting, a 1-0 victory on September 8, The winner of the match between Wake Forest and Dartmouth will face either South Florida or UNC Greensboro between December 5-7. Quick Notes Wake Forest is in its 29th year of soccer. The Deacons have compiled an impressive all-time record of Wake Forest won its first national championship in program history in Head Coach Jay Vidovich is in his 15th year on the Demon Deacon sideline. Vidovich has posted a record during his 15 years at Wake Forest. Wake Forest finished the regular season unbeaten for the second time in program history. Cody Arnoux scored the game-winning goal in the 95th minute to lift Wake Forest to a 1-0 win over William & Mary in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Wake Forest is unbeaten in its last 39 games against non-conference opponents. The Deacs are also unbeaten in the last 32 games at Spry Stadium, the fourth-longest home unbeaten streak in NCAA history. Jay Vidovich was named ACC Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his career. Wake Forest is ranked first in all four of the major national polls (NSCAA/Soccer Times/College Soccer News/Soccer America). (All four polls are listed on page 6 of this release.) 5 The Coaches Wake Forest: Jay Vidovich is in his 15th year at the helm of the Wake Forest men s soccer program. Vidovich has turned the Wake Forest soccer program into one of the best in the country, leading the team to its first national title in program history in Since becoming head coach in 1994, Vidovich has guided Wake Forest to a record. Vidovich was named national Coach of the Year by the NSCAA after the 2007 season and earned 2008 ACC Coach of the Year honors. Dartmouth: Jeff Cook is in his eighth year as head coach of the Big Green. Cook has a record of in his eight seasons at Dartmouth. Wake Forest has an all-time record of , including an mark when playing in Winston-Salem. The Deacs are unbeaten in their last 10 NCAA Tournament games. Wake Forest won its first national title in 2007, defeating Ohio State in the title game. Three Deacs Honored by Top Drawer Soccer Three members of the Wake Forest men s soccer team received postseason honors from Top Drawer Soccer. Ike Opara and Marcus Tracy were named to the First Team of the Season, Top Drawer Soccer s All-American Team. Danny Wenzel was named to the All-Rookie team. Schilawski Named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American Junior forward Zack Schilawski was named an ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic All- American. Schilawski was one of three forwards on the first team, as selected by a nationwide vote of CoSIDA members. Schilawski currently holds a 3.65 grade point average with a major in biology. Schilawski, who earned ESPN The Magazine All-District honors in 2007, has been named to the Dean s List all four semesters of his college career and is a twotime member of the ACC All-Academic Team. Playing from In Front Wake Forest has spent much of the season either tied or playing with the lead. In fact, the Deacs have only trailed in five games this season. The Deacs have been behind 96:40 out of the 1930:17 minutes played this season. Cronin Becomes Wake Record Holder for Most Career Games Played & Started Senior midfielder Sam Cronin became the new all-time leader in career games played and started with his start against Virginia in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament. Cronin has started all 95 games in his career at Wake Forest, surpassing Brian Edwards previous record of 93 games played and started. Deacons Finish Regular Season Unbeaten Wake Forest defeated Virginia 2-0 to finish the regular season without a loss for the second time in program history. The Deacons also finished the regular season without a loss in 2002, notching a record. Vidovich Named ACC Coach of the Year For the fourth time in his career, Wake Forest head coach Jay Vidovich was named ACC Coach of the Year, as voted on by the other eight coaches in the league. The unbeaten regular season marked the second time in program history that Wake Forest had finished the regular season without a loss. Seven Deacons Earn All-ACC Honors A league-high seven Wake Forest players earned All-ACC honors, highlighted by ACC Defensive Player of the Year Ike Opara. Joining Opara on the All-ACC First Team were Cody Arnoux, Corben Bone, Sam Cronin and Marcus Tracy. The five players on the first team were the most by one team since 1992 when Virginia also placed five players on the All-ACC First Team. Michael Lahoud was named to the All-ACC Second Team, while Danny Wenzel earned ACC All-Freshman Team accolades. Wake Clinches ACC Regular Season Title With its 4-2 win at North Carolina, Wake Forest clinched its fourth ACC regular season championship in the last seven seasons. The four regular season titles ranks in a tie for second with Duke among all the schools in the conference. Virginia is in first with 10 regular season titles all-time. The Deacons also captured the regular season title in 2002, 2004 and Wake Forest in November The Deacons have a winning record in the month of November, posting an all-time record of Wake has been more successful in recent seasons during the 11th month of the year, including a record during the 2007 season. Bone Becomes WFU Single Season Assist Leader With three assists against Boston College, sophomore midfielder Corben Bone became the Wake Forest single season assist record holder. Bone has 16 helpers on the season, surpassing the previous record of 13 held by Ryan Solle and Austin da Luz. After his performance against the Eagles, Bone received national honors from Soccer America, College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer. Cronin Named Finalist for Lowe s Senior CLASS Award Senior midfielder Sam Cronin is one of 10 finalists for the Lowe s Senior CLASS Award in the men s soccer division. Cronin, a political science major, maintains a grade point average and will graduate in December. Cronin is also active in the community, participating in projects such as Eat with the Deacs, Ronald McDonald House, Read Across America and Athletes Supporting Athletes. Cronin s name is now on the official balloting for a nationwide vote that concluded on November 19. The winner of the award will be announced during the 2008 NCAA Division I Men s Soccer Championships in Frisco, Texas. Vidovich Records 200th Victory Head coach Jay Vidovich picked up the 200th win of his coaching career in the Deacons 6-0 win over UNC Greensboro. Vidovich has won 69 percent of his games at Wake Forest, posting a record. Wake Forest Ranked No. 1 in all Four Major Polls The Wake Forest men s soccer team remains in the No. 1 position in all four major polls. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America and adidas, Soccer America, Soccer Times and College Soccer News have all tabbed the defending national champions as the No. 1 team in the country. The 36 seconds between goals marked the fifth-shortest time between tallies in Wake Forest men s soccer history. Tracy Featured in SI s Faces in the Crowd Senior forward Marcus Tracy is featured in Sports Illustrated s Faces in the Crowd in the issue that hits newsstands on October 16. Tracy, a Hermann Trophy candidate, has 11 goals, seven assists and 29 points on the season. Crazy Eight The eight goals scored against Virginia Tech equaled the most goals that Wake Forest has scored against an ACC opponent. The Deacs also scored eight times against NC State during the 1997 ACC Tournament. High Octane Offense The Wake Forest offense has been strong all season, as the Deacons currently rank first in the country in scoring offense, averaging 3.29 goals a game. The Deacons are first in the ACC in goals, assists and points. Deacons Continue Pair of Impressive Streaks Wake Forest has maintained a pair of impressive unbeaten streaks to this point in the season. Wake Forest is unbeaten in 39 consecutive games against non-acc foes. The Deacons last lost to a nonconference opponent on November 26, 2005, when California defeated Wake Forest 3-2 in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The Deacons extended their home unbeaten streak with a 1-0 overtime win over William & Mary in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Wake Forest is unbeaten in its last 32 games at Spry Stadium. The Deacons are one of three teams, along with Connecticut and Saint Louis, to have three players on the watch list. This is the second straight year that Wake Forest has had a player on the Hermann Trophy Watch List. In 2007, Julian Valentin was named to the watch list and was one of 15 semifinalists for the award. A junior from Wilmington, N.C., Arnoux led the Demon Deacons in goals (15) and points (38) in Arnoux was named a third-team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and also was All-ACC First Team last season. Cronin has started all 74 games for the Demon Deacons since his freshman year. In 2007, the Winston-Salem native scored three goals and added eight assists for the Deacons. The senior midfielder was named 2007 NSCAA Second Team All-American and a Soccer America First Team MVP. Senior forward Marcus Tracy is the third Wake Forest player on the Hermann Trophy Watch List. Tracy was second on the team in goals (11), assists (9) and points (31) in The Newtown, Conn., native was named Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the 2007 College Cup after scoring three goals, including two in the NCAA semifinal against Ohio State. The Hermann Trophy Watch List consists of 48 players, including the 2007 winner, Connecticut s O Brian White. White is looking to become the first player to repeat as Hermann Trophy winner since 1995 and A total of six players from the Atlantic Coast Conference are included on the watch list. Considered the highest individual honor in college soccer, the recipients of the Hermann Trophy are selected by Division I head coaches who are current

Four Demon Deacons Named Preseason All- Americans by Soccer America Cody Arnoux, Sam Cronin, Ike Opara and Marcus Tracy were named Preseason All-Americans by Soccer America. Cronin, Opara and Tracy were named to the first team, while Arnoux was selected to the second team. Arnoux, Cronin and Tracy were previously named to the Hermann Trophy Watch List and to College Soccer News Preseason All-American Teams. The honor for Opara is his first of the preseason. Rookie, Veteran Deacs Honored by College Soccer News Three Wake Forest players were named preseason All-Americans by CollegeSoccerNews.com, while five Deacon freshmen were named as freshmen to watch by CollegeSoccerNews.com. The No. 1 ranked Wake Forest men s soccer team opened the 2008 season with a 2-1 victory over Virginia Commonwealth on Friday afternoon in the first game of the Nike Carolina Classic. VCU out-shot the Deacons 10-7, with both teams recording four shots on goal. The Deacons took full advantage of their scoring opportunities, scoring twice on their four shots on goal. The Deacs had five corner kicks compared to four for the Rams. VCU had a great scoring chance in the 21st minute, but was thwarted by a superb save from Akira Fitzgerald. David Rosenbaum fired a shot from seven yards out, but Fitzgerald got his right hand on the ball and deflected it out of bounds. The Deacons first shot of the game came in the 24th minute. Senior midfielder Sam Cronin took a shot from in front of the net 25 yards out. The VCU keeper leapt and got a fingertip on the ball to send it over the net. Wake Forest got on the board first, scoring in the 38th minute. Senior Evan Brown played a beautiful pass from about 28 yards out that found Austin da Luz five yards out. Da Luz headed the ball in the back of the net to give Wake Forest the lead. VCU evened the game early in the second half. Owusu Sekyere passed the ball from the right side of the field, near the midfield stripe. Sekyere found David Rosenbaum on the right side of the field. Rosenbaum beat Akira Fitzgerald from 10 yards out to tie the game at one. The Deacons retook the lead in the 58th minute. Sophomore Corben Bone made a perfect pass from 23 yards out that found Marcus Tracy on the right side of the six-yard box. The 2008 Hermann Trophy nominee headed the ball into the upper right hand part of the net to give Wake a 2-1 advantage. With the victory, Wake Forest improves to in season openers. Senior forward Marcus Tracy scored his second game-winning goal in as many games as the topranked Wake Forest men s soccer team recorded its first shutout of the season in a 3-0 win over Florida International (0-2). Evan Brown and Lyle Adams also scored for the Deacons. Wake Forest (2-0) dominated many of the offensive stat categories. The Deacs out-shot Florida International 16-4 and had nine shots on goal compared to three for the Golden Panthers. Wake had 10 corner kicks while FIU took only two. Junior goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald notched his first clean sheet of the season for the Deacs. Fitzgerald made three saves en route to the shutout. On the offensive side of the ball, Jamie Franks added two assists, while Brown scored a goal and also recorded an assist. Wake Forest and Florida International played a scoreless first half. The Deacons had several scoring opportunities in the opening 45 minutes, but were unable to get a shot past the FIU goalkeeper. The Wake Forest defense held FIU without a shot in the opening half. The Deacons got on the board first in the 57th minute. Brown played a cross into the six-yard box. The cross found Hermann Trophy candidate Tracy, who headed the ball into the lower left hand part of the net. With Wake Forest up 1-0, the match was delayed for 73 minutes due to inclement conditions in the Chapel Hill area. It didn t take long for the Deacons to get back on the scoreboard after the delay as Brown extended Wake Forest s lead to 2-0 in the 60th minute. Junior midfielder Austin da Luz played a cross that found Brown s foot eight yards out. Brown fired a shot that found the back of the net for his first goal of the season. Wake Forest closed out the scoring at the 78:45 mark. A corner kick from Franks found Lyle Adams at the far post. Adams converted the beautiful corner kick into his first goal of the year. The shut-out was the second straight clean sheet for the Deacs. Playing in intermittent showers courtesy of Tropical Storm Hanna, the Deacons out-shot UCLA 17-12, but held a dominating 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. Akira Fitzgerald recorded his second straight shutout for Wake Forest, making three saves. The Baltimore, Md., native has not allowed a goal in the 220:09, with shutouts against both Florida International and UCLA. Wake Forest got on the board early, scoring at the 2:04 mark of the first half. Evan Brown attempted a shot that deflected off a UCLA player and went high into the air. Lyle Adams jumped and got a head on the ball from seven yards out to find the back of the net and put the Deacons on top. Marcus Tracy scored his third goal of the season in the 26th minute. After a nice pass from sophomore Corben Bone, Tracy fired a shot from just inside the 18-yard box. The ball found the left side of the net to give Wake a 2-0 lead after the first 45 minutes. UCLA had a couple of quality scoring opportunities in the first part of the second half, both by Maxwell Griffin. One of the best opportunities came at the 30:55 mark of the second half. Griffin sent a shot that went just wide of the right post and would have cut the lead to 2-1. Wake Forest closed out the scoring in the 73rd minute as freshman Nick Millington scored the first goal of his career. Cody Arnoux sent a pass across the box that found Millington on the left-hand side. Millington had a wide open net to shoot at and found the center. In the opening game of the tournament, North Carolina scored three second half goals to defeat South Carolina 3-1.
