Keeper Michael Lisch made a career-high eight stops. In the first-ever match between the two schools, the Deacs and Beavers battled to a 0-0 tie in double overtime. Sophomore forward Luca Gimenez is a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, while Johnny Torres comes to Wake Forest from Bogota, Colombia. Tough Road Ahead... The 2011 schedule for the Demon Deacons will pull no punches, as Wake will challenge both participants from last year s NCAA title game and three-of-four squads from last year s College Cup. This year s schedule produced a combined (.627) record from last season and includes only four teams that ended 2010 with losing records. After opening against South Florida, a First Round team last year, the Deacs hosted national runner-up Louisville in their second regular season contest on Sept. 2 at Spry Stadium. North Carolina, a College Cup team a year ago, came to town on Sept. 16. The schedule peaks on Oct. 29 with the Deacs hitting the road to play the defending national champion Akron Zips. A total of 11 NCAA participants from 2010 are included on the 2011 slate: South Florida (First Round), Louisville (National Runner-Up), North Carolina (College Cup), South Carolina (Third Round), Duke (Second Round), Boston College (First Round), College of Charleston (Second Round), Virginia (First Round), William & Mary (Third Round), Akron (National Champion) and Maryland (Quarterfinals)....But That s Nothing New For Deacs Wake finished last year No. 31 in the NCAA RPI, taking the field against 10 NCAA Tournament-bound opponents. ACC In The Tournament Despite the Deacs first absence in a decade, five ACC teams made the NCAA Tournament field in 2010 with North Carolina going all the way to the College Cup and Maryland advancing to the Quarterfinals. The Deacs posted a 2-4 record against those five teams last season, including a 1-0 decision at then- No. 2 Virginia on Sept. 18, 2010 and a 4-3 home win over then-no. 18 Boston College on Oct. 30, ACCo m p l i s h m e n t s Since-graduated goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald, junior forward Andy Lubahn and junior defender Anthony Arena represented the Deacs on the 2010 ACC All-Conference Second Team. The only other team in the conference to earn multiple selections on the second squad was North Carolina with four. Wake Boasts Trio of ACC s Top 2010 Freshmen Wake Forest s 2010 freshman midfield trio of Jared Watts, Luca Gimenez and Kyle Emerson helped the Deacons to a winning record (4-3-1) in ACC play and all earned spots on the 2010 ACC All-Freshman Team last fall. WFU s three selections were the most in the conference, and Duke - with two selections - was the only other school to garner multiple picks. New Ki d s On Th e Pi t c h Teddy Mullin, Sean Okoli, Sam Fink, Andrew Malkiewicz, C.J. Williams, Matt Pacifici and Sean Wilkinson make up the 2011 freshman class for Wake Forest men s soccer. Toss in two transfers, Kovi Konowiecki and Alex Bramall - both from St. John s (NY) - and the Deacs bring in the eighthranked recruiting class in the nation, according to CollegeSoccerNews.com. Mullin is rated the No. 1 recruit in the South Atlantic Region and No. 8 nation-wide by TopDrawerSoccer.com and connected on his first career assist in the ACC opener against Clemson on Sept. 9. Okoli, a fleet-footed forward, is ranked No. 40 in the country and eighth in the Pacific Northwest region. Five members of the 2011 incoming class (Bramall, Okoli, Pacifici, Konowiecki and Mullin) were high school All-Americans, while five players have experience playing internationally, either with youth national teams, ODP teams, Disney All-Star teams or European youth clubs. Okoli a Freshman of Influence Soccer America picked freshman forward Sean Okoli as a, Freshman of Influence, on a preseason list of the nation s rookies to watch. Okoli has extensive experience with the U.S. U-18 National Team and spent recent seasons in the Seattle Sounders Academy where he became the first Sounders Academy player to see match action with the Sounders reserve team. Ranked as the No. 40 player in his class by TopDrawer- Soccer.com, Okoli picked up the game-winning goal against Radford in the Deacons second preseason match Pr o g n o s t i c a t o r s Li k e Wa k e Fo r e s t Wake Forest picked up its highest preseason ranking on Monday, August 22 when Soccer America put the Deacons at No. 13 in its preseason Top 25. Boston College (43 points), Clemson (26 points), NC State (16 points) and Virginia Tech (13 points) rounded out the poll. Defend Like A Demon Wake Forest recorded four shutouts during the 2010 season, which came nowhere near the program record of 15 - a mark set during the Deacs run to an NCAA Championship in the 2007 season. With two shutouts in 2011, the Deacs have now amassed 228 clean sheets in program history. First Goal Wins Scoring first has been a sign of good things to come for the Deacs. Since 2003, when scoring the first goal, Wake Forest is (.924). Conversely, when the opponent draws first blood, the Demon Deacons are (.371). Home Cookin Does Deacs Good Wake Forest is (.651) at home against the ACC since the construction of W. Dennie Spry Stadium is widely considered to be one of the best college soccer venues in the country and College Soccer News agrees, rating Spry eighth on its list of The Best Venues for Watching College Soccer. College Soccer News calls it, a jewel of a soccerspecific stadium... a super facility with a great turf, and remarks, the atmosphere is enhanced by the solid contingent of students that sit on the north side of the stadium... when the Deacs find the back of the net in a key match-up it is not unusual for a player to climb the fence to greet students who run down the hill to join in the celebration. Spry Turnstiles Stay Busy One of the best and most-attended soccer venues in the country, Wake Forest s Spry Stadium hosted its 10thlargest match when USF visited to open the 2011 season on Saturday, August 27.
