The Gamecocks come to town with a shiny 6-1 record and a #7 national ranking. Most recently, South Carolina survived a scare against Davidson, coming back for a 3-2 on Wednesday night. Wake Forest is fresh off a 4-0 win in Wilmington on Wednesday that saw six different Deacons tally points against the Seahawks. Andy Rosenband scored two goals while Chris Lonteen and Ben Stafford each chipped in one goal and one assist. Series history: Wake and So. Carolina South Carolina holds a narrow all-time series lead and if history is any indication, tonight s game could be a shootout. The teams have combined to score 18 goals in the last three games. The 99 meeting in Columbia was a 3-3 draw. In 98, the Deacs upset 4th ranked South Carolina at Spry, 2-1. Back in 97, the Gamecocks edged Wake in an exciting 5-4 battle. Pregame Warm-ups Guns n Rosie After missing the preseason and first four regular season games, sophomore reserve forward/midfielder Andy Rosenband has made his presence felt. In his two games, Rosenband has been very productive. He came off the bench against UNC Wilmington on Wednesday and scored two goals in the Deacons 4-0 win over the Seahawks. Of Rosenband s five shots this season, four have been on net and two have found the back of the cage. Welcome to the Jungle The Deacons enjoy a huge home field advantage at Spry Stadium. The Deacons have posted a.750 winning percentage (16-4-4) in the last 24 regular season home games. During the 99 season, 29,622 fans saw the Deacons earn a mark at home, including the ACC and NCAA Tournaments. Those figures ranked Wake Forest fifth nationally in attendance. An average of nearly 3,000 fans saw the team s first two home games. Schedule Change The home game against Maryland has been rescheduled for Sunday October 1 at 1:00 p.m. Last time out The Demon Deacons blanked the UNC Wilmington Seahawks on We d n e s d ay night by a 4-0 count. Rob Vartughian made three saves to record his first shutout in a Wake jersey. Andy Rosenband scored two goals, his first multi-goal game as a Deacon, while Chris Lonteen and Ben Stafford each tacked on one goal and one assist. Jaron Barbee served two assists. The win snapped a two-game skid for the Deacs who were looking for their first win since the home opener on Sept. 8. Keep Your Eraser Handy Ben Stafford keeps moving his way up Wake Forest s all-time scoring charts. With his one goal and one assist performance against the Seahawks on Wednesday night, Stafford moved into fourth place in all-time scoring in Deacon soccer history (64) and tied for fourth in goals scored (24). With plenty of time left in his senior season, Stafford could leave Wake as the school s second alltime leading scorer. The Signal Mountain, Tenn., native scored four goals in the team s first three games, including the gamewinning tallies against UConn and UNC G r e e n s b o r o. Stafford also registered the first gametying goal against St. John s. Stafford was the team s leading goal scorer in 99 with eight. Of those, six were game-winning or game-tying goals. Stafford netted the deciding goals against Coastal Carolina, Vanderbilt, UNC Greensboro, High Point, North Carolina and in the NCAA tournament against Virginia Commonwealth. Scouting the Gamecocks Seventh-ranked ranked South Carolina is off to a 6-1 start under 23rd year head coach Mark Berson. The Gamecocks missed the NCAA tournament last year for only the third time since 1985 but early season wins over ACC p o w e r s Virginia and Maryland has South Carolina hopeful for another NCAA t o u r n a m e n t run. In 2000, Barbee has started two games but has come off the bench in the second 45 minutes to provide a spark. The senior assisted on Stafford s gamewinner against UNC G r e e n s b o r o and on Hakes goal against Liberty. When Barbee entered the lineup with 23 minutes remaining against UConn, Wake Forest picked up its intensity and began to pressure the Huskies. Shortly after, Wake tied the game, eventually winning in overtime. Coach Vidovich calls Barbee a vulture who converts on his chances. The coaching staff also likes his versatility. Seale ofapproval Junior Jamal Seale started his first game of the campaign at Wilmington after coming off the bench in a limited role in the team s first five games. The 1999 second team All-ACC midfielder missed all three preseason games due to injury. Seale led the team in assists in 1999 with seven. Thomas Named Preseason All-American Sophomore midfielder Aaron Thomas was named to College Soccer Online s preseason All-American team. After playing defender last year, Thomas has already proved to be a dangerous threat in the penalty area. He scored a gametying goal against St. John s on a diving header during a scramble in the box. Facing the Nation s Best South Carolina is the fourth top-10 team Wake Forest has played this season. The Deacs opened with an overtime win over Connecticut (currently ranked #4), and an overtime loss to #5 St. J o h n s. Last Saturday, #8 Virginia shutout Wake Forest 2-0. The remaining non-conference schedules includes George Mason, who is currently ranked is some national polls, Charlotte and High Point. ACC rivals Maryland and Clemson will visit Spry Stadium later this season while Wake travels to face in-state ACC rivals NC State, North Carolina and Duke. Stafford Named to Soccer America s Team of the Week After UConn Trip Senior Ben Stafford earned a place on the Soccer America Team of the Week for Sept. 4. Stafford scored two goals against Connecticut, including the overtime gamewinner. The next day, Stafford found net against St. John s. Three Deacons Earn Spots on Bob s Stores/UConn All-Tournament Team Seniors Ben Stafford and Ro b Vartughian and sophomore Aaron Thomas were named to the Bob s Stores/UConn All-Tournament thanks to their outstanding performances against Connecticut and St. John s. Vartughian made ten saves against UConn, including three saves within a eight second span in overtime. Just 34 seconds after Va r t u g h i a n s s aves, Stafford scored the ove r t i m e gamewinner against the Huskies. Stafford finished the trip with three goals. Thomas earned his place on the team in large part because of his game-tying goal against St. John s with less than ten minutes remaining in regulation. His diving header tied the game at two and forced the teams to play overtime. Vidovich in seventh season at WFU Head Coach Jay Vidovich is in his seventh season at the helm of the Wake Forest men s soccer program. He has a career record of and is just eight wins shy of becoming the all-time winningest coach in Wake Forest history, surpassing mentor and friend, Wa l t Chyzowych. The setback is Wake s first regular season home loss since November 8, 1998 when topranked Clemson defeated the Deacs 1-0. As expected, the game was a physical battle with 37 fouls called and nine cards being issued on the night, 25 of those fouls and seven of those cards to the Cavaliers. Virginia s Kyle Martino was ejected in the 57th minute after picking him up his second yellow card but the Deacs couldnât capitalize on the man-advantage. Leading by a goal, the Cavaliers bunkered down and prevented Wake Forest from stringing together scoring opportunities. Although the Deacons outshot Virginia 5-2 in the half, it was the Cavaliers who held possession for most of the first half. The Deacons best chance came with less than three minutes left in the first half. Aaron Thomas floater appeared to be destined for the top of the net but Cavalier goalkeeper Kyle Singer tipped the ball just over the crossbar. Virginia scored the game s first goal shortly into the second half when reserve forward Ryan Gibbs laced a right-footer that initially appeared to be floating wide. The shot came from 23 yards to the right of goalkeeper Rob Vartughian and bent into the top far corner of the cage. In the Spotlight... Under Chyzowych s guidance, Vidovich gained experience in the international game as well as at the youth and collegiate levels, helping to develop some of the top young players in the country. Several players whom Vidovich has mentored have gone on to achieve success at the national level, including Neil Covone, who played in the 1990 World Cup, and Craig Conger and Craig Johnson, who were members of the Olympic team. Others have gone on to achieve success in the professional soccer ranks, including Eddie Pope, Josh Timbers, and Mike McGinty. Since taking over as head coach of the Deacons in 1994, Vidovich has continued to develop a program that is competitive in the ACC and in the nation. Including the 2000 season, Vidovich has an overall record of in his six years. He needs just nine wins to catch his mentor, Chyzowych, becoming WFU s all-time winningest coach. Wake finished third in the regular season ACC standings and reached the ACC tournament semifinals. In 1998, a young and talented Deacon squad turned in an campaign and was ranked as high as No. 12 in the nation. High points of the season included a 2-1 upset of top-ranked Washington, a 2-1 win over No. 10 South Carolina, and a 2-2 tie with No. 4 Virginia. The 1997 Deacs weathered an up-and-down season to finish with a record. In 1996, Wake was picked to place seventh in the ACC but finished second, posting a record. In 1994, Vidovich led Wake to a record through a mentally and physically demanding season, and the following year, a young but talented team played a tough schedule to an mark. Born in Detroit, Mich., Vidovich attended New Canaan High School in Connecticut, where he earned all-state accolades. He then played at Indiana on the Hoosiers nationally-ranked 1978 team before transferring to Ohio Wesleyan, where he was a three-year starter. In 1982, he served as captain while leading OWU to the NCAA semifinals. In 1982, Vidovich received a bachelor s degree in physical education from Ohio Wesleyan, then proceeded to the University of Denver, where he received a master s degree in sports sciences in While a graduate student at Denver, Vidovich began his coaching career as an assistant on the Pioneers 1982 team, which won the NAIA Division II district and regional championships. Vidovich coached two NAIA All- Americans and six NAIA All-West players on that squad. In 1983, Vidovich moved on to Regis College, also in Denver. As an assistant, Vidovich again helped a standout team, which included two NAIA All-Americans and three All-West players. In his final stop before coming to Wake Forest, Vidovich returned to his alma mater, Ohio Wesleyan, as an assistant coach. In his two years there the team posted a combined record, ranking among the top 10 teams in the nation. Vidovich had another opportunity to work with athletes of national caliber there, coaching three All- Americans and nine All-Mideast players who led the team to two showings in the NCAA Tournament. As an assistant coach under Chyzowych at Wake Forest, Vidovich coached two All-Americans, nine All- South and 14 All-ACC team members. Since becoming head coach at Wake Forest, Vidovich has coached five players to All-South Region honors and mentored Kyle Bachmeier, Serge Daniv, Ihor Dotsenko, Josh Timbers and Chad Evans to All-ACC honors. Daniv and Timbers earned All-America recognition as well. Vidovich has been active in a number of youth soccer p r o g ram, a coach on North Carolina s Olympic Development Team staff and also has coached extensively overseas. His credentials include a USSF A license and a NSCAA Advanced National Diploma. Vidovich resides in Winston-Salem with his wife, Julie, and their 2 1/2-year-old daughter, Zoe. Page 6
