The Gamecocks are in NCAA Tournament games. The first bid came in a 2-0 loss at Charlotte in 1998 when the Gamecocks went in the regular season. Last season, Carolina earned an at-large bid with a record when the Gamecocks played Duke to a 1-1 draw at Athens, Ga. Duke advanced with a 4-1 edge in penalty kicks. SCOUTING WILLIAM & MARY William & Mary is led by Hermann Trophy semifinalist and two-time All-American senior forward Claire Zimmeck who has 13 goals and six assists for 32 points on the year. A two-time CAA Player of the Year, Zimmeck is fifth on the W&M all-time points list with 132 points (55g, 12a) in her career. Senior defender Abby Lauer was named the CAA Co-Defensive Player of the Year this season while senior midfielder Dani Collins and keeper Meghan Walker also earned first team honors. Collins is a 2007 All-American and former US U-21 National Team member. MATTERN, GRIMSLEY NAMED ALL-SEC Two women s soccer players were named to the Coaches All-SEC teams, the conference office announced Tuesday. Junior Blakely Mattern earned her second consecutive first team selection; freshman Kayla Grimsley was named to the second team and freshman team. Mattern picks up her third honor after earning second team and freshman honors in 2006 and picking up first team honors in She was also the 2007 SEC Defensive Player of the Year. Grimsley earned her place on the second team with a solid season at forward that led to eight goals and four assists for 20 points. She is one of three freshmen to make the All-SEC team in addition to being named to the freshman team. Friday, November 14 California at Florida (Gainesville, Fla.) 4 p.m. DEFENSIVE LEADERS is ranked in the top two in the SEC in every major defensive category. Led by LSU vs. Washington (College Station, Texas) 5 p.m. starting defenders Brittiny Rhoades, Ellen Fahey, Blakely Mattern and Samantha Diaz- Belmont at Auburn (Auburn, Ala.) 6:30 p.m. Matosas, Carolina has ranks No. 1 in the SEC in shots allowed (174, 8.29/game) and shots on Tennessee vs. Charlotte (Chapel Hill, N.C.) 7:30 p.m. goal allowed (76, 3.62/game). In addition, he team holds a 0.87 goals against average and eight Georgia vs. JMU (Winston-Salem, N.C.) 8 p.m. shutouts, both ranking second in the SEC. Carolina limited Mississippi State, LSU, and Georgia to under five shots, and also held both Alabama and Georgia without shots in the second half. Carolina s 8.29 shots allowed a game is tied for 16th in the nation. GRIMSLEY CONTINUES TO CLIMB THE CHARTS Freshman Kayla Grimsley has carried her strong play from the non-conference portion of the season to SEC play. Grimsley currently leads Carolina with eight goals and four assists for 20 points, numbers that rank second all-time for Carolina freshmen. Even more impressive is that 11 of her 20 points have come in six SEC games (4 goals and 3 assists). She set a record with a goal in four consecutive games (Sept 7-18) and tied the program record later in the season with a six-match scoring streak (Sept Oct. 12). Grimsley has earned weekly honors from Top Drawer Soccer, Soccer Buzz, Soccer America and the SEC. Playing for the first time since she graduated high school in 2005, Patton currently is third in the SEC with a 0.87 goals against average. She tied a USC single-season record - and is tied for first in the SEC - with her seventh shutout this year in a 0-0 draw against No. 13 LSU. She began the season with a 434:23 shutout streak and came up big in Carolina s draw with No. 7 Florida State. MATTERN, PATTON EARN ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT HONORS junior Blakely Mattern and redshirt sophomore Mollie Patton have been named to the CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District (III) team as announced on Thursday (Oct. 30). Mattern earned her second consecutive first team selection, and Patton earned third team honors. Mattern will now be considered for Academic All-America honors, which will be announced next week (Nov. 18). EXCEEDING EXPECATIONS For the third consecutive year Coach Shelley Smith s squad exceeded preseason expectations by finishing strong in conference play. Picked by the coaches to finish last in 2005, the Gamecocks earned fifth in the Eastern division. Picked to finish last in the East in the 2007 SEC Preseason poll, the Gamecocks tied a program record for wins en route to a fourth place division finish. Carolina was picked fourth in the 2008 preseason poll and again improved in the standings with a third place finish in the Eastern division. ALL-AMERICAN DEFENSE The defense has been consistently one of the top in the SEC and in the nation, and all signs point to this season being another strong one for the Garnet and Black. The Gamecocks return two former Freshman All-Americans in junior Blakely Mattern and sophomore Brittiny Rhoades. Mattern (Simpsonville, S.C.) has started every game of her career at center back, earning Freshman All-America honors in 2006 and becoming Carolina s first All-American after picking up honors in Mattern also picked up SEC Defensive Player of the Year honors last season, becoming the first sophomore in conference history to earn the honor, and earned a trip to the US U-20 National Team camp last spring. Rhoades (Wilmington, Del.) set a USC freshman record with 23 games played and 22 games started last year at left back, becoming the second Freshman All-American in as many years for the defense. MONTEIRO BATTLES BACK FROM INJURIES Senior Danila Monteiro saw the field for the first time in nearly a month when she played eight minutes against Ole Miss. The lone senior on the team, Monteiro missed five games after a hard foul to the back in the second minute at Western Carolina knocked her to the ground and she missed the remainder of the game with a leg injury. Monteiro, who missed the 2007 regular season finale and postseason after tearing her ACL, also missed the Furman game this year after suffering a concussion in the Clemson win with a ball to the back of the head. FIRST TIME OPPONENTS William & Mary and Carolina face off for the first time Friday. Carolina faced four opponents for the first time during the season, posting a record in those games. UNC Wilmington was the first as the Gamecocks and Seahawks battled to a scoreless tie in the season opener, followed by Carolina s 1-0 win over Boston. The Gamecocks tied #7 Florida State before dropping their first match of the season to a scrappy Western Carolina. Last season, USC went 4-0 against first time opponents, defeating East Tennessee State, Winthrop, Marshall and UC Davis last season. RHOADES LOCKS DOWN THE DEFENSE Sophomore defender Brittiny Rhoades continued the strong play from last season that led to her being named a 2007 Freshman All-American. The starter at left back, Rhoades has proven herself to be one of the premier lockdown defenders in the SEC. A set piece specialist, Rhoades has five assists on the year and nine in her career. Oddly, four of her five assists have gone to all of fellow defensive All-American Blakely Mattern s goals this year. OFFENSE STARTS FROM THE MIDFIELD The catalysts of the Carolina offense has come from the starting midfield trio of juniors Kim Miller and Lindsay Small and freshman Kayla Grimsley. Those three have combined for 15 of Carolina s 28 goals and rank first, second and fourth on the team in points. JACOBS LEADS THE FORWARDS Sophomore Brooke Jacobs scored in the 8th minute against Mississippi State for her second career goal - both having gone as game-winners. Jacobs s goal against the Bulldogs marked the first goal this season by a player that strictly plays forward; a combination of defenders and midfield/forwards scored Carolina s first 20 goals this season. The Gamecocks posted four consecutive shutouts to open the season, the first time a team held opponents scoreless through the first four games, and Carolina currently is second in the conference with eight shutouts on the year. OVERTIME MATCHES After playing six matches in extra minutes last season - all coming after the start of SEC play - the Gamecocks have played five so far this year. tied UNC Wilmington and No. 7 Florida State in double-overtime and defeated Furman 2-1 in the first OT. The win marked Carolina s first OT victory since defeating LSU (also by a 2-1 score) on Oct. 20, Two SEC games have gone to overtime, both ending in draws - Georgia (1-1) and #13 LSU (0-0). PLAYING IT SAFE is the only team to finish the SEC regular season without a yellow card in conference play. After leading the conferences in cautions in 2007, the Gamecocks have only been given three on year with one of those going to the bench. SOUTH CAROLINA VS. RANKED OPPONENTS No. 7 Florida was the third ranked team the Gamecocks played this season after tying then-no. 7 Florida State (3-3) at the Auburn Soccer Classic and then-no. 13 LSU (0-0) at home. Florida was be the highest ranked team to enter Stone Stadium since the Gamecocks recorded a 2-0 victory over No. 7 Clemson on Sept. 15, MILLER TIME! Junior midfielder Kim Miller had a game to remember against Arkansas. She did as an individual what no team as a whole could do all season - score two first half goals against the Razorbacks. Her efforts earned her Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week honors and AgSouth Player of the Week honors. SAM I AM Junior defender Samantha Diaz-Matosas scored Carolina s first goal of the season with a penalty kick in the 43rd minute against East Carolina. She followed that up with the game-winning goal in the 88th minute against Ole Miss to give her two game-winners on the year. A former forward, Diaz-Matosas was named to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week that week. NATALIE AARON S CAREER WEEKEND Freshman Natalie Aaron had a weekend to remember to start SEC play! The freshman midfielder was named SEC Freshman of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal against Tennessee and game-tying goal against Georgia, the first two goals of her career. HOME AT THE STONE has been nearly unstoppable at Stone Stadium the past two seasons, posting a record at home since The streak included a 15-game unbeaten streak from Aug. 31, 2006-Oct. 5, 2007 and a 13-game unbeaten streak at The Graveyard from Oct. 19, Oct. 23, The lone blemishes on the record are a double-overtime loss to Vanderbilt (Oct. 7, 2007) and a loss to #7 Florida (Oct. 30, 2008). O CANADA! Freshman Idana DeCecco has made the most of her opportunities in the early part of the season, scoring the game-tying goal against #7 Florida State on her only shot so far this season. DeCecco, a native of Sherwood Park, Alberta, is the first Gamecock player to hail from Canada. She is only the eighth international player to play at Carolina, the others coming from England, Trinidad, Finland (two players), Brazil, Ireland and Nova Scotia. DeCecco was a national team member for Canada and is expected to bring a strong defensive presence to the Gamecocks. NO SMALL FEAT Junior midfielder Lindsay Small recorded not only her first career goal but also her first career points as she led Carolina to a 1-0 victory over Boston. Normally a defensive midfielder, Small fielded a cross from Kim Miller in the 56th minute and placed it in the near post from 12 yards out to hit the game-winning goal. (11/7/08) - Fifth-seeded dropped a 2-1 decision to fourthseeded Georgia in the SEC Tournament quarterfinals Wednesday night despite another strong effort from the Gamecock defense that limited the Bulldogs to only three shots in 90 minutes of action. Again proving themselves to be a team strong on defense, the Gamecocks (11-6-4) outshot Georgia 18-3 in the game, including holding the Bulldogs (10-9-1) without a shot the entire second half. However, Georgia was able to convert on two of their three opportunities courtesy of a goal by Alex Hooker in the 10th minute and a header by Megan Tomlinson in the 26th that hit the right post and ricocheted into the net for the game-winner. First Team All-SEC selection Blakely Mattern scored the lone goal for the Gamecocks in the 81st minute courtesy of assists from All-SEC selection Kayla Grimsley and Brittiny Rhoades. The goal was the fourth of the year for Mattern while Grimsley and Rhoades both notched their fifth assists of the season. Obviously it s a very disappointing loss, head coach Shelley Smith said. To go down two goals early is tough. I thought we responded well in the second half with what we needed to do to put ourselves in position to score. Georgia went ahead in the 10th following a play in the box where keeper Mollie Patton pushed the ball out but collided with a defender to keep her out of the play. The rebound found its way to the center of the box as Hooker connected for her second goal of the season. Fifteen minutes later on Georgia s second shot of the game, Tomlinson took a header off a cross from Kelli Corless that hit the near post and redirected into the goal for the quick 2-0 Bulldog lead. The two first half goals marks the first time Carolina has given up two goals in a half since falling to Georgia in the 2007 SEC Tournament semifinals. held a 14-0 shot advantage in the final 45 minutes of action. The Gamecocks recorded the lone corner kick of the match in the 72nd minute before Mattern put the Gamecocks on the board eight minutes later to push the total to 2-1. All four games of the SEC first round Wednesday ended in 2-1 finals as LSU, Tennessee and Florida also advanced.
