Byrd also earned a share of the District 1-5A title and captured a fifth straight Battle on the Border trophy. Even though the season ended before everyone hoped it would, the 2015 season was a success. A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE TEAM The Byrd Yellow Jackets finished the year a 10-2 overall record. Byrd, Evangel and Parkway were the tri-champions of District 1-5A each finishing with an identical 5-1 record. The Jackets garnered the No. 4-seed in the Class 5A playoffs. Byrd defeated Fontainebleau 45-9 in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs, but fell, 46-41, to the Landry-Walker Charging Bucs in the second round. THE LAST TIME OUT Landry-Walker quarterback Keytaon Thompson was virtually unstoppable in leading the Charging Buccaneers to a win over the Byrd Yellow Jackets in the second round of the 2015 Class 5A playoffs. Thompson, who recently committed to Mississippi State, completed 19 of 30 passes for 260 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed 21 times for 115 yards and three touchdowns. Trailing with just over six minutes remaining in the game, Byrd made a ferocious comeback. Tysen Hardman capped off a six-play, 48-yard drive with a 19-yard touchdown run, his third of the night. The Jackets then recovered an onsides kick, and would cut the Bucs lead to six points after Sam Miletello s two-yard touchdown run and Hardy Trafford s extra point. Byrd again tried an onsides kick but Landry-Walker recovered and would ran out the clock. THE SEASON The 2015 season marked the third straight season in which the Yellow Jackets posted double-digit wins (11, 12, 10). That feat was a first in school history. This senior class finishes their careers with the most wins (33) in three-year period in the 111 years of Yellow Jackets football. The seniors have also won outright or shared the District 1-5A title in two of their three varsity seasons. From 2011 through 2015, Byrd has won 53 games, won outright or shared four district titles and has reached the playoffs every year. THE COACHES Mike Suggs completed his 18th season as the head coach at C.E. Byrd. Suggs, who is the school s all-time winningest coach, owns a (.675) record as the top Jacket. After guiding Byrd to the Division I title game in 2013, Suggs was named the 2013 Class 5A Coach of Year by the La. Football Coaches Association. An All-State end for the Southwood Cowboys in 1980, he went on to play receiver at Northeast Louisiana University, now UL Monroe. After two years at Southwood, he came to Byrd in 1990 as an assistant. In 1998, Suggs replaced Alan Carter to become the 20th head coach in school history. He and his wife Sandy have a daughter Cali, who is at ULM, and a son Andrew, who is a wide receiver and punter on the Byrd football team, and a pitcher and outfielder on the baseball team. The rest of the Byrd coaching staff includes: Stacy Ballew, Lindsey Bruno, Wade Leone, Jason Pope, Eric Evans, and James Opie. Freshmen coaches are Josh Jones, Matt Conger, Tyler Dupont and Dayton Corbett. The certified athletic trainer is Kyle Stairs.

Byrd High school visit DEUCE GETS IT DONE Senior Deuce Caston has been getting it done throughout his two-year career as the Byrd starting quarterback. Caston has led Byrd to nine wins this season, including a thrilling win against Airline in week nine. After Airline had tied the game at 21, Caston guided the Byrd offense on a 10-play, 90-yard drive, capping it off with a six-yard touchdown run. Deuce finishes his career with a 17-3 record as the Byrd starting quarterback, which includes two district titles. Caston has rushed for 274 yards and eight touchdowns this season. He completed 41 of 71 pass attempts for 776 yards and seven touchdowns, and threw just two interceptions. In his final two games, Deuce completed 12-of-13 passes for 182 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for three scores. Deuce was a First- Team All-District selection. TYSEN THE TERRIFIC After returning from a hip injury he suffered midway through the season, senior wingback Tysen Hardman was terrific. Tysen averaged 10.4 yards per carry this season and scored 12 touchdowns. In Byrd s win over Evangel, Hardman rushed for a career high 161 yards on just nine carries. In the final game of his career, Hardman set a personal best with three rushing touchdowns. Hardman finished the season with 12 rushing touchdowns this season, including runs of 75, 67 and 37 yards. Tysen was a First-Team All -District selection. OFFENSIVE LINE PAVED THE WAY Despite having to replace nearly every starter, including a number of multi-year starters, off of last year s offensive line, the 2015 O-line paved the way for the Byrd offense to average 256 yards a game. Despite being outsized nearly every game, center Aaron Navarre, guards Garrett Malmay and Lawson Scott, tackles Zach Ward, Parker Hall and Jonathan Fincher opened up holes for Byrd s multiple option attack, so much so, the Jackets scored 17 touchdowns of greater than 20 yards this season. The offensive line also gave quarterback Deuce Caston time to throw for 759 yards, which is the most passing yards since Richard Carthon had over 800 passing yards in Malmay and Scott were First- Team All-District selections, and Scott was also selected to The Times All-City Team. FULLBACK TRAY ALLEN FINISHES HIS CAREER IN STYLE When senior fullback Tray Allen tore a ligament in his knee last year against Airline, it might have cost Byrd a return trip to the Superdome. One of the biggest questions for Byrd s offense surrounding the 2015 season was could Allen return to pre-injury form. The answer to that question was a resounding yes. Allen led the Jackets potent rushing attack with 1,095 yards and 10 touchdowns. Tray was Byrd s first 1,000-yard rusher since He tore up opposing defenses by averaging six yards a carry and 91 yards per game. He rushed 23 times for 185 yards against the Calvary Cavaliers in week three, which were both career highs. He had a career long 61-yard touchdown run against Fontainebleau in the first round of the playoffs. In his three-year career, Allen rushed for 1,903 yards and 18 touchdowns, which ranks him ninth on the school s all-time rushing list. Tray was First-Team All-District selection as well as being named to The Times All-City Team. Byrd High CORNER STONES OF DEFENSE Seniors Luther Dallas and Chris Grant were the corner stones of Byrd s Purple Swarm Defense this season. Dallas led the team in interceptions with five, including two returned for touchdowns. His 60-yard pick-six sealed the victory for the Jackets in their win over the Airline Vikings. In Byrd s playoff win over Fontainebleau, Grant led the defense with a game-high six solo tackles, and Dallas had a season-high two interceptions, including a 35-yard pick six. Malmay and Scott were First-Team All-District selections, and Scott was also selected to The Times All-City Team. AS STRONG AS STEELE Playing the Buck linebacker position in Byrd s defensive alignment is a very tough assignment. But when your first name is Steele, you re used to handling tough assignments like replacing an All-District performer like Dayton Johnson. In Byrd s win over Airline, Steele collected a season-high 12 tackles (10 solo, 2 assisted), including two tackles-for-loss. Netterville finished his outstanding junior campaign by leading Byrd s Purple Swarm Defense with 52 total tackles, including 42 solo stops. For his efforts, Steele was a First Team All-District selection. It should come as no surprise of Netterville s abilities on the gridiron as he is the grandson of late, great Louisiana Tech Hall of Fame receiver Tommy Spinks. TWO TRENTS ARE BETTER THAN ONE Why have one Trent when two is better? Safeties Trent Jones and Trent Touchet had fantastic final seasons with Byrd s Purple Swarm Defense. The two Trents combined for 89 tackles, including 70 solo stops, six tackles-for-loss, two sacks, two interceptions, four pass breakups, a forced fumble, four fumble recoveries and two touchdowns. Touchet along with Noah Scruggs each registered 10 tackles against Longview. Touchet returned a fumble 77 yards for a touchdown in Byrd s loss to Parkway, which was the second longest in school history. Jones intercepted his first pass of the season and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown against Haughton. He finishes his career with five career interceptions. Jones, who was a First-Team All-District selection in 2014, was again selected to the First-Team All-District in THE M&M BOYS Defensive linemen Micah Minter and Malik Leary had sensational senior seasons for Byrd s Purple Swarm Defense. Both were First-Team All-District selections as well as members of The Times All-City team. The M&M boys combined for 24 tackles-for-loss and 11 sacks. From his defensive end spot, Leary tied with cornerback Luther Dallas for a team-high seven pass breakups. Not to shabby considering it was Malik s first season on defense. OUTLOOK FOR 2016 In 2016, coach Mike Suggs will have to replace 19 starters (10 offense, 9 defense) from the 2015 team. The lone starter on offense that returns is tackle Zach Ward. In the backfield, look for Zavier Moore to take over for Deuce Caston at quarterback. The hope is that fullback Jalin Thomas, who suffered a season-ending injury against Parkway, can return to form. Javier James and Sam Miletello are the only reserves with significant experience. The Purple Swarm Defense will have All-District performer Steele Netterville back. Netterville will have a couple of experience linemen in front with Shimorye Hampton and Mark Johnson. Placekickers Hardy Trafford and Ben Smith are expected back, but the Jackets must replace punters Joey Jernigan and Andrew Suggs.
