When you look at the definition of average it describes the 2017 high school football season for the Byrd Yellow Jackets perfectly. A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE TEAM The Byrd Yellow Jackets finished the 2017 season with a 5-5 overall record and finished with a 3-3 record in District 1-5A. Byrd lost to the Archbishop Rummel Raiders in the first round of the Division I playoffs. The 2017 team loses five starters on offense and five on defense. THE LAST TIME OUT Archbishop Rummel quarterback Chandler Fields tossed five touchdown passes and ran for another score to lead the Raiders to a win over the Byrd Yellow Jackets in the first round of the LHSAA s Division I playoffs. Raiders wide receiver Ja Marr Chase caught nine passes for 131 yards and three touchdowns. The lone bright spot for Byrd was the play of running back Jalin Thomas, who rushed for 162 yards and two touchdowns. THE SEASON Again average was the theme surrounding the Byrd Yellow Jackets in Byrd finished the 2017 season with a 5-5 overall record and 3-3 in District 1-5A play. The Jackets won their first two games, then lost the next two. Byrd. Suggs, who is the school s all-time winningest coach, owns a (.652) record as the top Jacket. After guiding Byrd to the Division I title game in 2013, Suggs was named the 2013 Class 5A Coach of Year by the La. Football Coaches Association. An All-State end for the Southwood Cowboys in 1980, he went on to play receiver at Northeast Louisiana University, now UL Monroe. After two years as an assistant at Southwood, he came to Byrd in 1990 as an assistant. In 1998, Suggs replaced Alan Carter to become the 20th head coach in school history. He and his wife Sandy have a daughter Cali, and a son Andrew, both Byrd alums. The rest of the coaching staff includes: James Wilkerson, running backs; James Opie, wide receivers; Lindsey Bruno, offensive line; Stacey Ballew, defensive coordinator and linebackers; James Bradford, defensive line; Eric Evans, cornerbacks and Wade Leone, safeties. The freshmen coaches include Matt Conger, Tyler Dupont, Marcellus Lewis and Carrick MacDonald.

Get the latest Byrd football buzz by downloading the Byrd football app JALIN THE JET SOARED THIS SEASON Since returning to flight in the season opener against Calvary, Jalin The Jet Thomas soared to new heights in In Byrd s win over Parkway, Thomas rushed for 342 yards on 27 carries and three touchdowns. It was the third-best rushing performance in school history. His 342 rushing yards marked the first time since 2000 that a Jacket back had eclipsed the 300-yard plateau. Thomas also equaled a career-high with three rushing touchdowns against the Panthers. A feat he s accomplished twice this season. In the 2016 season opener, Thomas injured his knee on the first drive of the second half and was lost for the season. In 2015, he burst on to the scene in Byrd s season-opening win over Barbe. He returned a punt 78 yards for a touchdown, and had 56 rushing yards on just two carries. Thomas sophomore season was cut short as he suffered a broken femur on his first carry against Parkway. Against Haughton, Thomas put his name into the Byrd football record book with a school-record 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. He leads the team in rushing with 947 yards, in scoring with 72 points and in all purpose yards with yards per game. Jalin finished the season with 1,109 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. He was the first Byrd back since Tray Allen in 2015 to accomplish to eclipse the 1,000-yard rushing mark. Thomas was a First-Team All-District selection and a Second-Team All-City choice. He was selected to the Louisiana High School Coaches Association All-Star Game but was unable to participate. BEAM US UP SCOTTY In Mike Suggs 19 years as Byrd s head coach, he s had some fantastic kickers like David Hankins, John Shaughnessy, Ben Eldredge and Jake Wyss just to name a few. That trend continued in However, the big difference is that the 2016 team had two kickers instead of one. The dynamic kicking duo Ben Smith and Hardy Trafford was a real bright spot for the Jackets last year. Left-footed junior place kicker/punter Scotty Roblow made quite an impact in Against Sulphur, Roblow drilled a 36-yard field goal in the first quarter. It was his first field goal of his career. Against Shreve, Roblow made two of three field goals against the Gators. He was 3-for-5 on field goals this season. Roblow was 33- for-35 on PAT kicks, both misses came on bad snaps. He had a 60-yard punt against Shreve, and averaged 39.7 yards per punt this season. Thirty-seven percent of his kickoffs resulted in touchbacks, and opponents average starting field position was the 23. In the playoff game against Rummel, Scotty punted six times for a 41.7 average. In a district filled with outstanding kickers and punters, Roblow was named First-Team All-District as a placekicker and Second-Team All-District as a punter. He was also selected to The Times All-City Team as a place kicker. Roblow continuing the tradition of outstanding kicker and punter at Byrd. OVER THE AIRWAVES Byrd football is broadcast live on AM 1130 The Tiger. Charlie Cavell completed his 20th season as the Voice of the Byrd Yellow Jackets calling the play-by-play action. Former Byrd defensive back Timmy Brown was the color analyst, while veteran broadcaster Marty Johnson provided sideline reports. Fans can listen to Byrd football anywhere in the world by going to and clicking the listen live link. Of those 21 turnovers, the opposition has converted 14 of them into points - 13 touchdowns and two field goals, which totaled 95 points. Against Sulphur, Byrd fumbled the ball twice inside the Tors 15-yard line. Against Haughton, the Bucs forced four Jacket turnovers and scored each time. Byrd has forced eight turnovers and has converted only three of those turnovers into points. Against Shreve, Byrd did not turn the ball over, which was the first time all season the Jackets didn t give the ball away. Unfortunately, the turnover bug returned against Southwood and has continued to bite Byrd hard. The Jackets fumbled the ball five times losing four, both season highs against the Cowboys. Byrd turned it over four times against Evangel and the Eagles converted three into touchdowns. In the season finale against Airline, the Vikings scored 14 points off of Byrd fumbles. On the opening drive of the second half, Byrd fumbled and it was scooped up by the Vikings Jaylyn Thomas and returned 42 yards for a touchdown. The lone turnover against Rummel was converted into a touchdown by the Raiders. QUARTERBACK DUO SPLIT TIME IN 2017 Sophomore quarterback Cameron Felt started the first four games of the season. Felt had good outings in the first two games leading the Jackets to wins over Calvary and Moss Point. However, versus Sulphur and Haughton, things did not go particularly well for him. Against Sulphur, the sophomore signal caller had the Jackets inside the Tors 15- yard line twice only to fumble the ball away. Against Haughton, Felt had a fumble and two interceptions. Junior quarterback Carson Dunn came on in relief of Felt and played most of the game against the Bucs. Dunn would start the next three games, all Byrd wins, before missing the Evangel game. Felt started against Evangel as well as the regular season finale against Airline. Both quarterbacks tossed touchdown passes against the Vikings. They were the first touchdowns thrown by either quarterback this season. Both players have similar rushing statistics, averaging over three-and-a-half yards per carry. Felt has a better completion percentage, but it s still under 50 percent. The difference has been that the team s record when Dunn starts is 3-0 and when Felt starts is 2-5.
