W&M leads the all-time series With a 9-1 record, W&M owns its best mark through 10 games since 1947 and can earn its first-ever 10-win regular season with a triumph against UR. Additionally, the College leads the nation in rushing defense (59.2), while it is sixth in scoring defense (13.9), fifth in sacks per game (3.4) and fifth in TFLs per game (8.3). All-American senior defensive end Adrian Tracy leads the unit and ranks among the top 10 nationally in sacks and TFLs. The Tribe s offense has also continued to post impressive numbers and leads the conference and ranks 26th in the country with yards per game. With yards per game rushing, W&M currently ranks 22nd nationally. In 2002, Colley was granted honorary alumnus status by William and Mary. Bob Sheeran has never drifted far from the beat of W&M sports. A 1967 graduate of the College, Sheeran served as W&M s sports information director for 16 years before entering private business in He has teamed up with Colley for the last 24 years as part of the football broadcasts and has also served as an integral part of all W&M Quarterback Club booster functions since his graduation. A testament to his dedication to the College was witnessed in 2003 as an endowment was organized in his name by HEYFARL (a W&M football booster organization) to provide scholarship support for a Tribe walk-on football player. Richmond Series Notes A Win versus Richmond would Improve the Tribe s record to No team in the history of the Tribe program has won 10 games in a regular season Only three other teams in school history (1990, 10-3; 1996, 10-3; and 2004, 11-3 ) have recorded 10, or more, wins in a year. Assure the College of at least of share of the CAA Championship It would be the fourth league title the College has collected under Laycock. Mark the Tribe s second-straight win over a top-10 ranked opponent The College is coming off a victory over then No. 7/8 UNH The Tribe has never knocked off a pair of top 10 teams in back-to-back weeks. Continued on the next page The Last Meeting WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (11/22/08) -- The No. 16/19 Tribe scored a pair of touchdowns in the final 3:02 to force overtime, but No. 6/7 Richmond s Andrew Howard kicked a 37-yard, game-winning field goal in the first extra session to give the Spiders a victory on Senior Day at Zable Stadium. Trailing 20-6 late in the fourth quarter, senior Derek Cox ignited the College s comeback when he returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown with 3:02 remaining in the contest. W&M s RJ Archer then skied to recover the ensuing onside kick, putting the Tribe in business at its own 41-yard line. The squad then marched 59 yards in 10 plays to tie the score when senior quarterback Jake Phillips found the end zone on a sneak from a yard out with 18 seconds on the clock. The College took the ball first in overtime and had its 39-yard field attempt blocked by Sherman Logan. Howard finished what was a five-yard Spider drive in its half of the extra session and spun his game-winning try from the right hash from 37 yards out. Despite turning the ball over seven times, W&M kept the score close with an outstanding defensive effort that saw the unit hold the Spiders scoreless over the final 30 minutes of play, allowing just 35 yards of total offense and two first downs. UR took a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter when offensive lineman Michael Silva recovered a fumble by quarterback Eric Ward in the end zone. UR increased its advantage to 10-0 with a 33-yard field goal by Howard with 7:01 left in second quarter. The successful kick capped off an 11-play, 50-yard drive that lasted 6:26. The Spiders Derek Hatcher later returned an interception 35 yards for a score, while an 18-yard field goal by Hatcher as the second quarter clock expired put the Spiders ahead, 20-0, at halftime. A pair of field goals by Pate cut the lead to 20-6 with 11:13 left in the contest, and the Tribe held Richmond to just 12 yards of total offense during the remainder of regulation en route to mounting the comeback OT Final Richmond William and Mary Derek Cox, now a starting cornerback with the Jacksonville Jaguars, returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown in last season s contest against Richmond. 4 Game 11 No. 5 William & Mary vs. No. 4 Richmond Nov. 21, 2009 Noon UR Stadium

Game Notes Virtually guarantee the College a first-round home game in the upcoming NCAA Championships A national seed in the NCAA Championships would remain a strong possibility The Tribe is looking to gain its eighth all-time appearance in the NCAA Playoffs. Give the College a six-game conference-winning streak and move the College s record to 7-1 in the CAA Only four other Tribe squads have recorded seven wins in league play (1993, 1996, 2001 and 2004) Only one other Tribe team has won six-straight league games in a single season (the Tribe started the in league play, then reeled off six-straight conference wins to end the year). Snap the College s current four-game losing streak to the Spiders The Tribe hasn t beaten Richmond since the 2004 season (a win in Williamsburg). Mark the first time since 2001 that the College has defeated JMU, Delaware and Richmond in the same regular season. Stand as William and Mary s 60th win, all-time, against Richmond and 20th with Jimmye Laycock at the helm of the program The Tribe is currently vs. the Spiders under Laycock. Stand as the William and Mary program s 533rd all-time win (vs. 511 losses and 41 ties). Move W&M Head Coach Jimmye Laycock s all-time record to and improve his all-time conference mark to Serious History Saturday s game between William and Mary and Richmond will mark the 119th meeting between the two schools in the Oldest Rivalry in the South. The Tribe leads the all-time series The teams first met in 1898, when Richmond shut out W&M, Only three other FCS series have a longer history than that of William and Mary vs. Richmond. In fact, the Tribe and Spiders have met just as many times as the longest I-A series, Minnesota vs. Wisconsin. Saturday s game will be the 119th meeting between the schools. Here is a look at the longest series in Division I (Entering 2009 season): Rivalry Games First Met Lafayette-Lehigh Yale-Princeton Yale-Harvard W&M-Richmond *Minnesota-Wisconsin *I-A teams All-conference candidate senior safety David Caldwell has totaled 29 tackles and an interception against the Spiders during the past three seasons. Recent History Since the two teams started meeting as conference opponents in 1993, the Tribe holds a 9-7 overall record vs. Richmond. W&M is 5-3 in UR Stadium during the same span (but is winless in its last two visits). In the 16 total games the two have played as conference foes, the College has never scored less than seven points, while scoring more than 20 on nine occasions. Conversely, the Spiders have failed to score 21 points eight times, and have been held to less than 10 in two contests. In its current four game win streak vs. the Tribe, Richmond has managed to outscore the College Richmond started its current streak with a 41-7 win in 2005, which stands as the most lopsided victory for the Spiders in the series since 1916, when the Spiders defeated W&M, Last season s nail biting, overtime win for the Spiders was one of the relatively few games the two teams have played as conference opponents that has been close. Since 1993, the two squads have only played four games in the series decided by a three points or less (William and Mary is 3-1 in such contests). Conversely, 11 of the games during the same span have been decided by double-digit margins (with the Tribe holding a 6-5 edge in such games). This year will mark the third time since 1993 that both teams enter the game with a national ranking. Prior to last year, when the Tribe entered the game ranked as high as No. 16 nationally and Richmond was as high as No. 6, the two sides had only met once before with both team s carrying a national ranking since the two team s first joined the conference for the 1993 season. That year, a 6-4 Tribe squad was ranked No. 25 and knocked off what was then a 13th-ranked Richmond unit, Did You Know? That a win by William and Mary on Saturday will give Tribe Head Coach 20 career wins over the Spiders. The number would represent exactly one-third of the school s all-time win total in the 119-game series (60). The Very Best In addition to owning top-five national rankings, W&M and Richmond are two of just eight teams remaining in the top 20 with one loss or less. Familiar Faces Richmond brings in a pair of very familiar faces to the Williamsburg campus on Saturday, as the Spiders Head Coach, Mike London, was the team s defensive line coach from the seasons. Additionally, UR cornerbacks coach and special teams coordinator Dave Legg served as an assistant at William and Mary from Something s Gotta Give Since the two teams met for the first time as league opponents (in the current league affiliation) in 1993, the game has been the difference for one team or the other winning at least a share of the league title six times. In those games, twice for W&M (1996, 2004), four times for UR (1998, 2000, 2005, 2007), the team who could claim the title (or at least a share of it) has emerged victorious (the College s conference title in 2001 was claimed by defeating Villanova in a rescheduled game due to the 9/11 tragedy). While last season s game was essentially a play-in game for the NCAA Playoffs, the 2009 game will be the first time both teams come into the contest with an opportunity to claim a share of the conference crown with a victory. For What its Worth No Jimmye Laycock coached team that has ended the season with eight, or more, wins, has ever lost to Richmond. The Tribe is 9-0 in those situations. Additionally, no William and Mary squad that has made an appearance in the NCAA Playoffs has ever lost its final regular season game. Did You Know? Richmond hasn t won five-straight games in its series with the College since running off five W s from 1919 to Big Stakes William and Mary and Richmond head into Saturday s contest with identical 9-1 records and 6-1 league marks. At the game s completion, a maximum of two CAA teams will have as few as one league loss (Villanova will look to improve to 9-1 (7-1) against Delaware). The scenario is the same for both the Tribe and Spiders, as each team s only loss on the season is to Villanova, so the Wildcats win the tiebreaker against either, should it win. A Villanova loss against Delaware would make the W&M/UR winner the outright CAA Champion. Did You Know? Last season, despite placing a record five teams into the NCAA field, only then-no. 1 ranked James Madison (8-0 in league play) was awarded one of the NCAA field s four seeds (which assure home games in at least the first two rounds contingent on school meeting NCAA minimum bid standards). Overall, in the last five years, the CAA has had only four teams seeded in the Top-4 in the championship field. Those teams were as follows: Madison (#1, in 2008), UMass (#3, 2006), UNH (#1, in 2005), W&M (#3, in 2004). No team was seeded in The last time the league had two Top-4 seeds was in Villanova (#1) & Delaware (#4), which finished with 11-0 and 10-1, regular season records, respectively. That Being Said Though the recent past hasn t been terribly kind in terms of national seeds for the conference, going back over the history of the league, one has to go back to the 1995 season to find the last time a 10-1 team from the conference failed to earn an NCAA seed (Delaware was 10-1 in 1995 and didn t get a top 4 seeding). The last four CAA teams to finish the regular season with just one loss have earned a national seeding. Huge Milestone William and Mary Head Coach Jimmye Laycock enters the weekend s action just two wins shy of 200 for his career (he currently has 198 career wins). He reached the 100-win milestone during the 1995 season, when his squad recorded a 39-0 win at New Hampshire. Established in 1693, William and Mary is the second-oldest college in the country. U.S. News and World Report recently ranked W&M as the hottest small public university in the nation. 7 Game Notes Team Notes Nifty Nine William and Mary s hard-fought win over then-no. 7/8 UNH last week assured the Tribe its first 9-1 start since That season, the Tribe finished the regular season with a 9-1 mark and then traveled to play Arkansas in the Dixie Bowl (falling 21-19). Overall, the College has now recorded nine all-time seasons of nine, or more wins, with seven having come with Laycock at the helm (the two prior to his arrival in 1980 came in the 1940 s). Taking it one step further, the College has finished with eight, or more, wins 10 times during head coach Jimmye Laycock s 30-year tenure at the College. Prior to his coming to campus, the Tribe had just six total eight win seasons in its entire history (dating back to 1893). Additionally, Laycock has guided the College to winning seasons in 20 of his 30 total seasons on campus. Winning Vs. the Wildcasts The College s win last week over New Hampshire marked the school s seventh-straight win over the Wildcats, including its fourthstraight victory over a UNH squad ranked in the national top 10. The win moves the College s home record to 5-0 on the season. The five home wins ties a school record for regular season home wins, set many times with the last one coming during the 2004 campaign. The victory extended the Tribe s winning streak to six games over With the win against then-no. 7/8 New Hampshire last Saturday, W&M improved to 9-1 for the first time since teams from the CAA s Northern Division. The Tribe s last loss vs. a Northern Division foe came during the 2007 season, when the College was dealt a loss at Hofstra. A Lock? Over the last five seasons, no CAA squad with eight (or more) wins has failed to make the NCAA Playoff field. In fact, in that same span, a seven win team (UNH in 07) and a five loss team (Maine in 08) have each advanced from the ultra-competitive league to the NCAAs. Did You Know? The last eight-win team from the CAA not to advance into the NCAA playoffs was Northeastern in 2003 (which finished with an 8-4 mark). In the five years since, the league has been represented in the NCAA field by an average 3.8 teams a year (19 total). Big Finish The College will end its season playing two top 10 teams for the second consecutive year. Last season the Tribe faced then No. 1 ranked James Madison in Harrisonburg in the season s 10th game, before finishing its slate vs. then sixth-ranked Richmond. Taking it a step further, the Tribe finished the 2007 season by playing four-straight top 20 programs, starting with No. 4 UMass and ending with No. 7 Richmond. The Tribe s final two opponent s combined record of 17-3 is by far the most difficult finish of any team currently ranked in the national top 8. The next closest, in terms of future opponent s combined record is New Hampshire (who finish with the Tribe and a now 4-5 Maine squad). By contrast, current No. 1 Southern Illinois played a 6-5 Missouri State last week and finishes with a South East Missouri State squad that is currently 2-8. Current national No. 2, Montana faced a 3-8 Northern Colorado this past weekend and ends with a now 7-3 Montana State. Overall, according to the NCAA website, which produces a statistical category for strength of schedule (that factors in only the cumulative record of your opposition), the Tribe s cumulative opposition s record (56-42,.571) ranks as the fifth most difficult nationally (among FCS schools). By contrast, Montana s is 68th (40-48) and Southern Illinios is 83rd (40-51). Interestingly, the same listing features five CAA school s in the top 10 (Delaware, No. 1; Villanova, No. 2; W&M, No. 5; Towson, No. 7; No. 9 Northeastern and No. 10 James Madison). Including Richmond, six of the 10 FCS schools on the Tribe s schedule have six, or more, wins on the season, with four of those having already won eight, or more, games (Central Connecticut State, 8-2; Villanova, 9-1; New Hampshire, 8-2; Richmond, 9-1). Only two of the FCS schools on the Tribe schedule have losing records (Towson and URI). Florida A&M Pennsylvania 7-2 NR League Play The Tribe s win over UNH moved the Tribe s league record to 6-1, which will marked the 10th time (in 17 total seasons) the College has won at least five games in conference play. The College has now won six, or more, league contests a total of five times (since 1993); 1993 (7-1); 1994 (6-2); 1996 (7-1); 2001 (7-2); 2004 (7-1) and 2009 (6-1). Pretty Incredible The NCAA officially tracks 17 team statistical categories. Of those 17 categories, the College leads the CAA in six. Taking it one step further, the College ranks in the top three in 10 of the 17 (and places no worse than fourth in an additional three). Well Rounded The College currently leads the league in both total offense and defense. The Tribe offense is averaging a total of yds/game, while its defense is yielding just yds/game. Nationally, the team is ranked fourth in total defense (Penn leads with yds/game), while the offense is ranked 26th (Appy State is first with an average of 491.3). Did You Know? The last team to lead the league in both total offense and defense was the 1996 Tribe squad. That year, the Tribe was the league s out-right champion (then Yankee Conference). The College averaged a league-best yds of total offense and yielded a league low yards a game on defense. Number Crunching Since taking a lead in the third quarter against UVa, the Tribe has only trailed at any point, in any game, four times since (Villanova, led the entire game, after staking itself to a 14-0 first quarter lead, NE, URI and UNH each held first quarter leads). In terms of quarters, the Tribe trailed all four quarters against Villanova, then just a combined five for the remainder of the season. The College has trailed at halftime only twice this season (at Villanova and at Virginia). Did You Know? That the College has out gained every opponent this season and is averaging 142 yards per game more than its opposition (avg. of yds/gm to yds/gm). Did You Know II? The College has won eight of its nine games on the season by double digits (with only last week s win over UNH being closer than 10 points). Conversely, its only loss of the season, a setback at Villanova was also double digits. Going back to last season (the last 21 games), the College played in only three games that were decided by seven, or less, points; both the team s wins over UNH; in 2009 and a win in Durham in 08; and the heartbreaking, 23-20, overtime setback in the 2008 season finale against Richmond. Unusual? Traditionally, the College finishes the season as one of the least penalized programs in the conference (if not the nation). This year has been the exception, as the Tribe is being flagged or an average of 53.3 yds/ contest, the eighth worst figure in the conference. Coming into Saturday s contest, the Tribe has given up more yards in penalties (533) than its opponents have been flagged (408). One has to go back to the 1997 to find the last time the Tribe finished a year with more penalty yards than its opponents (427 to 384). Tight Fit The Tribe ended its regular season home schedule averaging 10,269 fans a contest, including a pair of sell-outs against Delaware and James Madison. The number represents.838 of the capacity of Zable Stadium. Since Zable Stadium was altered to its current capacity (12,259), the College s single-season attendance record is 10,700 set in Student Interest The Tribe s first game of the season attracted over 2,400 of the 5,800 person undergraduate class to Zable Stadium. The Homecoming contest drew even a better number, as over 2,600 student-tickets were pre-distributed for the game. The team ended the season with an average student attendance of better than 2,000 a contest. Of the 17 categories officially tracked by the NCAA, W&M leads the CAA in six. Additionally, the Tribe ranks among the top three in 10 categories. 8 Game 11 No. 5 William & Mary vs. No. 4 Richmond Nov. 21, 2009 Noon UR Stadium

Game Notes Veterans The College will have a total of 11 players (6 defensive/5 offensive) on the field Saturday who have made 20, or more, career starts. On the defensive side, senior defensive end Adrian Tracy comes into play having started every career game, and 42-straight. He is followed closely be fellow senior defensive end, CJ Herbert, who will bring 37 career starts into Saturday s action. Safeties David Caldwell (32) and Robert Livingston (22), defensive tackle Sean Lissemore (30) and linebacker Jake Trantin (20) round out the list of defensive players. On the offensive side, center CJ Muse has the top streak, currently sitting at 33. He has played both guards and center since seeing his first action as a redshirt freshman in Quarterback RJ Archer is next on the list, as he has made 27 career starts (11 at QB, 16 at WR), followed closely by senior WR DJ McAulay (22), tight end Rob Varno (20) and Jake Marcey (20). In Case You Noticed At the conclusion of spring practice, the squad voted five-players at team captain (QB, RJ Archer; SS, David Caldwell; DT, Sean Lissemore; DE Adrian Tracy; and TE Rob Varno). If you watch the pre-game captain s meeting with the officials that precedes the opening coin toss you will notice that only four are present at any one time. This is because it is an NCAA rule that only four may go out for the opening coin toss at any one time. In the five games that have followed, the Tribe has converted 15 of its next 20 red zone ventures into TDs (and an additional three FGs). For the year, the Tribe has scored on 34 of its 40 red zone changes (23 TDs, 11 FGs). Trending The Tribe offense has now scored 20, or more, points in nine of the first 10 games of this season, with the only exception being the team s setback at Villanova. Taking it one step further, the Tribe offense has scored 20, or more, points 20 of its last 21 games dating back to last season. Balanced Living The Tribe s offense has attempted 409 rushes, compared to 313 passes. It is averaging yards a game on the ground and in the air. Overall, 94 of the team s league-best 205 first downs have come via the run, while an additional 94 have come through the air (with the remaining 18 coming courtesy of a penalty). Ball Control The College s offense has the league s best averages in both time of possession (33:19) and is tied for the lead league in first downs (20.6/game). Rolling Thunder The Tribe s rushing attack is currently ranked second in the conference, as it is averaging yds/game (trailing Villanova s league leading average of 216.9). If the Tribe were to maintain its current rushing average, it would finish the season with its highest rushing total since the 1999 season (which saw the Tribe average rushing yards a game). Possession Passes If the College maintains its current per game average of 200.8, it would be the team s lowest per game passing average since the 1995 season (with averaged yards passing a contest). The flip side of this number is that the Tribe has the league s second-highest completion percentage (.629 ) and has the second-fewest interceptions on the year (with just five). The Tribe started the season with a streak of six consecutive games with three, or more, attempted FGs. Since the early season run, the squad has attempted just one in three of the last four games. The team s season-high came in the opener, when it attempted seven field goals in the win over Virginia. Senior all-conference place-kicker Brian Pate is currently fourth in the nation in FGs with 18 (in 27 attempts), an average of 1.80/game. Defensive Notes Dominant Defense The Tribe defense has been outstanding this season and currently leads the league and ranks fourth nationally by allowing just yards per game (59.2 rushing/177.1 passing). Only Delaware s offense has been able to break the 300-yard barrier of total offense. One has to look back to 1996 to find the last Tribe defense to end the season as the league s topranked unit. Since 1970, only six Tribe defenses have finished a season having allowed less than 300 yards of total offense per game. This year s unit is currently on pace to establish the program s best mark during that period ypg ypg ypg ypg ypg ypg ypg All-America candidate senior defensive tackle Sean Lissemore has helped the Tribe limit opponents to just 59.2 yards per game on the ground, a figure that leads the nation. Just Getting Better and Better In addition to ranking fourth nationally in total defense by allowing just yards per game, the Tribe has been even better during the last four games and has surrendered just ypg (JMU-210, URI-149, TU-201, UNH-226). Shutting Down the Ground Game The Tribe currently leads the nation in rushing defense by allowing just 59.2 yards per game on the ground. W&M is currently on pace to break the program s rushing defense record of 78.6 ypg that it established in It was the only time in school history that W&M has allowed less than 100 ypg on the ground for an entire season (note: opposing teams stats are only available through the 1955 season). Additionally, W&M is allowing just 1.9 yards per carry. The College last held the opposition to fewer than 3.0 yards per carry in 1996 when opponents averaged just 2.1 yards per rush. Especially Tough Against the Run in CAA Action The Tribe has been especially tough against the run in conference play, as league opponents are averaging just 50.6 yards per game this season. W&M s best efforts have come against Rhode Island (-46) and Delaware (-2), while James Madison (150) and Villanova (114) were the only two conference opponents to rush for more than 100 yards. More on Stopping the Run W&M has allowed less than 40 yards rushing in five of the last eight games (NSU-29, UD-<2>, NU-39, URI-<46>, UNH- 27). Not Too Bad Against the Pass Either In addition to its dominant rush defense, the Tribe has also been tough against the pass and ranks fourth in the conference by allowing just yards though the air per game. W&M has been especially tough to throw against in the last three games, as it is surrendering just yards per contest through the air (JMU-66, URI-195, TU-129, UNH-199). The Tribe last allowed 200 yards through the air against Northeastern. 10 Game 11 No. 5 William & Mary vs. No. 4 Richmond Nov. 21, 2009 Noon UR Stadium

Game Notes Pointless? Certainly, the numbers this season s Tribe defensive unit has posted thus far stand on their own merits and need no frame of reference to be appreciated. But, when comparing defensive s coordinator Bob Shoop s current defense to the first squad he led just two years ago, the numbers are simply staggering [it is also worth mentioning that five current W&M seniors; Adrian Tracy, Sean Lissemore, David Caldwell, Robert Livingston and CJ Herbert, were starters on the 2007 squad]. The first, and biggest, disparity comes in terms of total points allowed, as the 2007 group allowed a school record 427 in 11 games the current unit has allowed just 139 through 10 games). Along the same lines, the 2007 squad yielded an average of more than 225 yards rushing a game, a figure that has improved by more than 165 yards a game. Another, of the many, staggering differences would be in comparing the two squad s third down defense; the 2007 unit had a stop percentage of 44%, while the 2009 unit is allowing opponents just a 30% conversion rate). Tough to Score Against W&M s defense has been very tough to score against this season and currently ranks sixth nationally by allowing just 13.9 points per game. Only one Tribe opponent has scored more than 20 points this season (Villanova - 28). Since W&M began regularly playing 11-game schedules, the Tribe has allowed less than 20 points per game eight other times. (The school record for fewest points allowed per game is 3.7, which was set in nine-game schedule) All-conference candidate senior defensive end C.J. Herbert has helped the Tribe defense hold opponents to just 13.9 points per game, a figure that ranks sixth nationally. Especially Tough at Home While the Tribe has allowed just 13.9 points per game this season, it was especially tough to score against at Zable Stadium this season as it allowed just 10.8 points per game. In the final three regular-season contests, James Madison, Towson and New Hampshire combined to score just 20 points. 12 Game Notes Sacking the Opposition W&M has been effective in getting to opposing teams quarterbacks this season and already has totaled the third most sacks in school history with 35 (school sack records date through the 1977 season). Twenty-eight of the sacks has come in the seven league games (UD-5, VU-5, NU-4, JMU-3, URI-6, TU-2, UNH-3). For comparison, the Tribe totaled 24 sacks all of last season. Additionally, the Tribe currently leads the conference and ranks fifth nationally with 3.4 sacks per game. Senior All-American defensive end Adrian Tracy has led the unit and currently ranks tied for 10th nationally with 0.9 sacks per game. Already the school record holder for career sacks (29), Tracy s 10 sacks in 09 is closing in on the program s single-season record of 12 established by Luke Cullinane in Below is a list of the Tribe s top single-season sack totals Tackles for a Loss With 83 tackles for a loss this season, the Tribe currently ranks fifth nationally (8.3 TFL per game). This year s edition of the Tribe is closing in on the school record of 107 that was established in Almost as Good on Fourth Down The Tribe has also been effective on fourth-down stops, as it currently leads the CAA and ranks tied for 18th nationally with a 31.6 percent conversion rate. Opponents have six conversions on 19 opportunities. The Sticks are Staying Put The Tribe s defensive unit has been extremely good at getting off the field this season, as it leads the league by surrendering just 13.3 per game. W&M has been especially effective in the last three weeks as it has allowed just 11 first downs against each of its last three opponents. Overall, the Tribe defense has been on the field for just 610 total plays, the fewest in the league (the next closest is Richmond - 635). Three-and-Out W&M has forced 52 three-andouts in 120 opportunities - a leaguebest 43.3 percent success rate at getting the offense back on the field. All-conference candidate redshirt freshman cornerback B.W. Webb recorded his league-leading fifth interception of the season in last weekend s win against then-no. 7/8 New Hampshire. Second Half Dominance The Tribe defense has been simply dominant in the second halves of games this season. In addition to allowing just 5.6 points per game after the break, W&M has surrendered an average of just 17 yards rushing (UVA-19, CCSU-14, NSU-5, UD-12, VU-24, NU-15, JMU-84, URI-<37>, TU- 12, UNH-22). Additionally, the Tribe has allowed an average of just yards of total offense per game after halftime (UVA-79, CCSU-127, NSU-84, UD-185, VU-81, NU-125, JMU-125, URI-93, TU-101, UNH-115). Ranking Second Half Points Allowed This Decade The 58 points allowed by the Tribe in the second halves through the first nine games ranks as the best mark by a Tribe team in the last decade. W&M has shutout four opponents this season (Virginia, Central Connecticut St., James Madison, Towson) Third Quarter Dominance The Tribe defensive unit has been outstanding during the third quarter of play this season. In addition to allowing just 45.9 yards per game during the quarter (459 total), W&M has allowed just seven points all season (Villanova - TD). Third Down Stops W&M s defense has been outstanding on third downs this season and leads the CAA and ranks 14th nationally with an opponent conversion percentage of just 30.1 (43-143). The Tribe has been especially effective in league games, as conference opponents are converting just 28 percent (28-101) of their third downs. Out of the Red Zone It has been incredibly tough for opposing teams to move into the Red Zone against the Tribe this season, as they have done so just 16 times. Additionally, six of W&M s 10 opponents have failed to enter the Tribe s 20-yard line more than once. The College has been especially impressive in the past five games, as opponents have gotten into the Red Zone just five times (and scored just twice - URI and UNH). W&M opponents have only been able to score on 62.5 percent of their opportunities, which ranks second in the CAA. Not Even Close In addition to its impressive Red Zone stats, opponents have had a difficult time just moving across the 50-yard line against the Tribe. In the last four games, opponents have crossed the 50 just 21 times in 64 possessions (32.8 percent). One Step Forward, Two Steps Back While the Tribe defense has yielded just 592 rushing yards this season, the unit has totaled almost as many rushing yards in losses All or Nothing The Tribe has allowed just two made field goals this season (JMU, 44-yd; UNH, 42-yd). Amazingly, W&M opponents have attempted just three field goals all season. Score One for the Defense In addition to shutting down opposing team s offenses this season, the Tribe defensive unit has also provided some points of its own. Redshirt freshman cornerback B.W. Webb returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown in the season opener at Virginia, while the Tribe has recorded safeties against Central Connecticut State and Rhode Island. The safety versus the Blue Devils marked the first time the College had posted a safety since doing so against Villanova on Nov. 6, Creating Turnovers With the exception of the season-opening win at Virginia in which W&M forced the Cavaliers into seven turnovers, the Tribe was unable to cause multiple turnovers in any of the other first five games this season. However, the College has been much improved recently and has forced at least two turnovers in four of the last five contests. 12 Game 11 No. 5 William & Mary vs. No. 4 Richmond Nov. 21, 2009 Noon UR Stadium

Game Notes Doing What Others Couldn t While then-no. 7/8 New Hampshire entered last Saturday s contest with one of the nation s top-ranked offensive attacks, the Tribe s defensive unit did an outstanding job slowing down the Wildcats. Below is a list detailing W&M s effectiveness. Stat Cat. Avg. Entering Game Total vs. W&M Difference Points Total Yds Rushing Yds Passing Yds First Downs Quarterback Notes RJ Archer, Quarterback Archer s poise, athleticism and decision making has been everything the College has needed on the season. He remains efficient and accurate with his throwing, while remaining a viable threat with his feet. The Tribe s offense has put a premium ball control and Archer s precision passing has been a crucial component in helping the squad average over 33 minutes a game in time of possession. A perfect example of his play was witnessed in the Tribe s win over New Hampshire last week, where Archer didn t post gaudy statistics (120 passing yards, 37 rushing yards), but was on point when it counted most. After UNH had converted a forth and seven from the Tribe 35-yard line into a potentially momentum crushing 35-yard TD pass that tied the game at with 8:17 remaining, Archer coolly guided the Tribe down the field on a methodical 11-play, 52- yard drive that sucked 5:23 seconds on the game clock and put the eventually winning points on the scoreboard (curtsey of a 37-yard Brian Pate field goal). On the drive, which may well prove to be the most decisive of the season, Archer connected on three of his five pass attempts (for 41 yards) and converted a crucial third-and-seven with a 10-yard sprint that ended with him running through a pair of Wildcat defenders at the stakes to keep the drive moving. The following are some brief notes on Archer to this point in the 2009 season: With one more win, he will equal the school s record for wins in a single-season by a first year starting quarterback. Currently Chris Hakel (1990) and Mike Cook (1996) are tied for the school lead in this category (as each piloted squad s to 10-3 records) in their respective first years as the starting QB. Coming into the final game of the schedule, Archer has thrown for 1,951 yards and needs just 52 more to eclipse the 2000 yard-mark on the season. His 1,951 passing yards is the second highest total in the league (the leader has 2,257). His completion percentage of.631 currently ranks 10th all-time on the College s single season record books The mark places him fifth among CAA QBs. Currently, he is third in the league in passing yards a game (203.2) and fourth in total offense, with an average of yds/game. Archer s QB efficiency rating of ranks him fourth among league QBs with more than 30 attempts on the year. He now has thrown just five interceptions in 306 attempts on the year, giving him an interception percentage of just 1.64, the CAA s lowest figure (next closest is VU s Chris Whitney, 1.75). His 14 TD passes is the tied for third-highest total in the league (with the leader at 16). His 306 attempts is the most in the conference, as are his 193 completions. With 22 more attempts and seven more completions, he will move into the College s all-time top 10 singleseason listings in both categories. He comes into the Richmond game having been responsible for 106 total points on the season (14 TD passes, three TD rushes), an average of 10.6 pts/game. This average is the fourthhighest figure in the league. Records Through seven games on the season, Archer has broken the following records: Longest pass completion A 91-yard touchdown strike to Chase Hill in the team s win over Delaware Most pass attempts in a single game (55 vs. Villanova) Tied the record for most completions in single game (35 vs. Villanova, a record shared with former Tribe QB David Murphy). In the End Zone Archer has appeared in 14 career games as a quarterback (10 this year, four last year). He has thrown or run for at least on TD pass in 13 of the 14 appearances. His only appearance without a touchdown was in the closing minutes of the Tribe s win over VMI last season (he attempted just two passes). Did You Know? While on the subject of fifth-year senior starting quarterbacks, each of the last three for William and Mary have all gone onto earn all-conference honors (Corley, 2nd Team in 02; Campbell 1st Team 04; Phillips 3rd Team 08). In Case You Missed It All-America candidate senior quarterback R.J. Archer has accounted for 17 While Archer is starting his 10 career game at quarterback on Saturday touchdowns (14 passing/3 rushing) this vs. Richmond, he had spent both his season. redshirt freshman and sophomore years as the team s starting wide out (making 22 career starts). See his career receiving stats on page 38 of this release. Terrance Schmand, Quarterback Tribe sophomore reserve quarterback Terrance Schmand set career highs for completions (three), attempts (four) and yards (43) in the team s win over Towson. Schmand also turned in his career-long completion, a 23-yard strike to senior WR Eric Robertson. Schmand attempted and completed his first career pass attempt in the team s route of Northeastern (Oct. 10). Coming in for the final series of the contest, Schmand completed a 14- yard pass along the right sideline to junior wide out Marshall Dill. It was Schmand s second career appearance (with his first action coming in the team s win at Norfolk State, in which he did not attempt a pass). Schmand currently has completed four of his seven passes on the year for 57 yards in four appearances. Schmand, who stands 6-3, 215-pounds, made a rapid ascension up the team s two-deep as injuries hit particularly hard at the Tribe s backup QB position. Coming into the year, junior Mike Callahan and sophomore D.J. Mangas were expected to battle for the No. 2 role, but a fall camp injury cost Callahan the season, while Mangas was lost for the year during practice before the third game of the year. Tailback Notes Jonathan Grimes, Tailback Sophomore All-American candidate, tailback Jonathan Grimes pounded out 136 rushing yards on 23 attempts vs. a hard-hitting New Hampshire defense. He ended the game with a season-best 215 all-purpose yards (21 receiving, 58 kick returns). With the Tribe trailing 10-3 in the second quarter, Grimes busted out what could have been the play of the game for the Tribe, as he broke multiple tackles en-route to a 54-yard run that flipped the field and led to the squad s first TD of the afternoon (a 5-yard run by Courtland Marriner with 11:18 remaining in the half). The 100-yard effort was his second of the season and fifth of his career. One year removed from being the league s leading rookie rusher (929 yards) and the conference s top all-purpose player (with an average of yds/gm), Grimes has completely established himself as one of the league s elite tailbacks. The following is a look at what he has accomplished so far this season: Currently he is currently leading the league in both rushing (92.2) and all-purpose yards (140.8). Nationally, he ranks 18th and 14d, respectively. His 189 rushing attempts on the year is the most in the conference (next highest John Griffin, NE, 179). Game 11 No. 5 William & Mary vs. No. 4 Richmond Nov. 21, 2009 Noon UR Stadium 13

Game Notes His 240 all-purpose plays (combination of rushing attempts, receptions and all returns) also leads the league (Northeastern s John Griffin is next with 201). His 34 receptions is the top mark among league running backs (next closest is Hofstra s Everette Benjamin s season total of 22). Grimes will enter Saturday s action with Richmond having collected over 100 all-purpose yards in eight-straight games. Overall, he has gone over the century mark in nine of the 10 games on the year (his only miss being a 89 all-purpose yard effort in the Tribe s win over Central Connecticut State in the second game of the season). He has rushed for 90, or more, yards in six of the last seven games (lone miss being a 54-yard effort in the team s win at Rhode Island). Raising His Game As good as Grimes has been for the entire season, the native of Palymra, N.J., native has perhaps been at his best since the Tribe turned its attentions to league play in week four vs. Delaware. In the seven games of conference play, Grimes has averaged a league-best 5.3yards over his 137 attempts, with six touchdowns, including runs of 61 yards (vs. JMU); 56-yards (vs. NE) and 54 (vs. UNH). Grimes currently has the league s highest rushing average (103.3 yds/game) in league play. All-Everything Grimes leads the league in all-purpose yardage (140.8 yds/game the next closest total is Villanova s Matt Szczur, yds/game). Last season, Grimes led the league in the category, with an average of yds/game. No Tribe player has led the league in this category two times in a career. Long Time Coming? The College has never had an athlete lead the league in rushing yards since joining it current conference affiliation in Milestones A big afternoon against Richmond s powerful rush defense could give Grimes an interesting statistical Double Dip. First, if he were to gain 78 rushing yards, Grimes would reach the 1,000 yard-mark in 11 games (and make him just the 12th Tribe tailback to accomplish the feat - the last time a Tribe player rushed for more than 1,000 yards came during the 1998 season, when Hameen Ali gained 1,022 yards in Second, if Grimes went for 149 yards on Saturday, he would breach the 2,000-yard career mark (in 22 career games). Courtland Marriner, Tailback Explosive junior tailback Courtland Marriner scored the Tribe s first TD of he contest in the win over New Hampshire, sliding in from 5 yards out in the second quarter to knot the score at His run stands as his seventh rushing TD of the season, which is a team high. Marriner has now scored at least one TD in each of the last three games (and five total in the span). He currently is the College s second-leading rusher with 409 yards on just 77 attempts (an average of 5.3 yds/attempt). Marriner was the team s leading rusher at Rhode Island, when he sprinted to 93 yards and on just nine attempts, including a career best three TDs on scoring runs of 39, 16 and nine yards. The 39-yard rush was also career long for the Chesapeake, Va., native. Marriner had similar performance in the team s win over Towson, as he churned out 65 yards and a score on nine rushes. His performance against Towson moved his career-rushing total over the 1,000-yard mark (1,068 yards on 241 attempts), making him the second current Tribe player with more than 1,000 career-rushing yards (Grimes currently has 1,851). Marriner set his personal season high in attempts (15) while rushing for 62 yards in the Tribe s win over James Madison. Standing just 5-9, 182-pounds, Marriner is among the team s strongest (pound-for-pound) and fastest players. He was the team s leading rusher during the 2007 (his redshirt freshman year), as he went for 518 yards on 115 attempts, before injuries limited his playing time a season ago (29 attempts for 141 yards). Marriner has been the perfect compliment to Grimes in the backfield as he has been a picture of consistency, running for 40, or more, yards five times this season and currently is averaging a team best 5.3 yds/attempt and has also caught 21 passes (for 89 yards). Did You Know? That Marriner s 93-yard effort at Rhode Island made him the first person other than Jonathan Grimes to lead the squad in rushing since the second game of last season (when now-junior tailback Terrence Riggins posted a career-best 180-yard effort vs. VMI). Grimes had led the squad in rushing the previous 16 games entering last Saturday. Kyle O Brien, Fullback/Defensive End Junior defensive end Kyle O Brien has been a key addition to the Tribe s backfield in recent weeks, as he has become the team s top short-yardage full-back. This past week vs. UNH, he threw a key block in helping spring Grimes for a crucial fourth-quarter 13- yard gain on a third and one attempt at midfield. The run eventually led to what became the game-winning points (off the foot of Brian Pate). O Brien saw his first career action in the offensive backfield in the team s win at Rhode Island, as he took snaps as the team s fullback. O Brien also saw snaps as both a special team s performer and defensive end during the afternoon, as he also recorded a QB sacks, which gave the squad a safety. Wide Receiver/Tight End Notes All-America candidate sophomore running back Jonathan Grimes is averaging rushing yards per game in conference play. DJ McAulay, Wide Receiver Returning senior all-conference wideout D,J. McAulay came into the season as one of only two seniors on the entire roster listed at the wideout position. While his experience is crucial for the College, his big-play ability may even be more critical for the College s attack. He has the speed, hands and quickness to be a threat every time he touches the ball. After missing action in each of the last two contests (at URI and vs. Towson) with a shoulder injury, but is expected to return to action before the end of the regular season. His average of 4.88 catches a contest is the league s third highest figure (with Maine s Landis Williams leading with 7.11). McAulay is currently 12th in the league in receiving yards (57.0 yds/game) In his last five games, all in league play, McAulay has brought down 25 balls for 261 yards. Included in the span was his second-career 100-yard performance in the game with Villanova, which saw him get exactly 100 yards on his seven receptions. He currently leads the Tribe in catches (39), receiving yards (456) and is second on the team in receiving touchdowns (three). Did You Know? That McAulay will enter Saturday s contest with Richmond having caught at least one pass in 20 straight games (all 11 games of last season and the first game of the 2007 campaign his last of that season). After sustaining a serious knee injury during the first game of the 2007 season, McAulay had a solid comeback in 2008 as he earned third-team All-CAA honors. He enters Saturday s contest needing 364 receiving yards and two TD receptions to enter the school s all-time top 10 in both categories (see career chart on page 38 of this release). The player he is looking to bump off the all-time list is Mike Tomlin, who currently sits in 10th-place with 2,054 career-receiving yards. 14 Game 11 No. 5 William & Mary vs. No. 4 Richmond Nov. 21, 2009 Noon UR Stadium

Game Notes Cameron Dohse, Wide Receiver Sure-handed junior Cameron Dohse saw his first two starts of the season (and his first since being the regular starter throughout the 2007 season) against Rhode Island and Towson during McAulay s absence. He made the most of the opportunity at increased playing time by bringing in 11 spirals for 145 yards over the last three games. Dohse turned in personal season highs in both receptions (6) and receiving yards (76) vs. the Rams. In the win over Towson, Dohse brought down a pair of spirals for 52 yards. For his career, Dohse has proven to be an extremely reliable down field threat, as he is averaging 16.0 yds/catch over his 51 career receptions (for a total of 813 yards). For the year, Dohse has 18 grabs for 38 yards. Chase Hill, Wide Receiver As the College moves into its final regular season finale against Richmond, look for 6-2, 195-pound junior wide out Chase Hill to have a major impact. His size, strength and consistency will be vital, as the Tribe will be looking to maximize all its assets at the receiver position. While Hill s numbers have been up and down (he had only 15 receiving yards on two catches through the first three games), he has the talent to be a playmaker for the Tribe (as witnessed by his sixcatch, 148-yard effort in the win over Delaware). Despite making just three catches vs. UNH (for 24 yards), he turned in one of the most significant plays of the contest, as he made a leaping grab on a 10-yard touchdown delivery from Archer which capped a 13-yard, three-play scoring drive for the College and put the team up in the third quarter. The play might have been made more significant in the fact that it came with the Tribe facing a third and four from the Wildcat 10-yard line, and had he not made the spectacular catch, the College would likely have been forced to settle for a field goal. The score against UNH gives him a team-best four TD receptions on the season, while he is second in total receiving yards (421 on 30 receptions). in the league. If the Tribe were to maintain this average, it would be the highest team rushing average since the 1999 team averaged per game. Robert Gumbita, Guard Redshirt freshman guard Robert Gumbita has made a spot start at both the left and right guard position for the College in the last three weeks. First, made his first career start against Rhode Island, subbing for an injured Derek Toon, then, last week against New Hampshire, he came on to replace Chris Sutton at the opposite guard spot. The 6-5, 300-pound native of Mount Pleasant, Pa. didn t appear to cause the team to miss a beat, as the squad ran for a season best four TDs vs. the Rams and punished the Wildcats for 191 rushing yards. Toon made a healthy return and has started the past two contests, while Sutton remains questionable for this week s action against Richmond. All-American senior defensive end Adrian Tracy ranks among the nation s top 10 in sacks and tackles for a loss. Rob Varno, Tight End Senior returning all-conference tight end Rob Varno will enter Saturday s action as one of the league s most productive and consistent tight ends. Varno has seen 43 games of action in his collegiate career and brings the squad a savvy veteran presence at the line of scrimmage. Currently, he is second among CAA tight ends with 34 reception and his 335 receiving yards is third among conference tight ends, as are his three TD catches. Varno extended his streak of consecutive catches in a game to 22 with his 12-yard, fourthquarter grab on what turned out to be the Tribe s game winning drive. The senior from Wilmington, N.C., comes into Saturday s action having made three, or more, receptions in seven of the team s 10 games on the year. Varno posted one of his best efforts of the 08 season against Richmond last fall, as he totaled a team-high six receptions for 67 yards. Alex Gottlieb, Tight End While he primarily remains a key force along the line of scrimmage, sophomore tight end Alex Gottlieb has steadily increased his role in the Tribe offense over the course of the season. He turned in a break-out effort against James Madison, as he set career high in both receptions (two) and receiving yards (41). Included in his afternoon was his first career touchdown grab (an 18-yarder in the third quarter that gave the College a 17-3 lead). Offensive Line Notes C.J. Muse, Center As previously stated, Muse will be making his 34rd career start on Saturday vs. Towson, which makes him the most senior player on the Tribe s offense. Muse is also the only senior listed on the College s starting two-deep along the offensive front. He is the leader of what has to be considered one of the team s most improved overall units. The starting front of Muse, guards Chris Sutton (nine games), Robbie Gumbita (2 games) and Derek Toon (nine games) and tackles Jake Marcey and Keith Hill, Jr., have provided the power behind the league s most potent attack. Since the team has moved into league play, the Tribe s front five has rounded into form, as the Tribe is averaging yds/game (and 4.4 yards and attempt). The Tribe s 15 rushing TDs in league games is the third highest conference mark. Overall, the College is averaging yds/game on the ground, the second highest mark Defensive End Notes Big Numbers for Tracy Senior All-American defensive end Adrian Tracy has established himself as one of the top players in the nation this season. In addition to holding the school record for career sacks (29), the Buchanan Award candidate ranks tied for third nationally among all active players. With 10 sacks this season, he is also closing in on the single-season school record of 12 established by Luke Cullinane in His 0.9 sacks per game currently ranks tied for 10th nationally. With 58.0 career tackles for a loss, Tracy leads the nation among all active players. Additionally, he ranks tied for fifth in the country with 1.75 TFLs per game this season. Tracy Coming on Strong in Conference Play Adrian Tracy has been outstanding in conference play this season, totaling 10 sacks and 17.5 tackles for a loss. During the seven-game span, he has recorded at least two sacks in three contests and at least two TFLs five times. His best performance came in the Tribe s win at Northeastern when he totaled 2.5 sacks and 3.5 tackles for a loss. Tracy Garner National Honors After posting an outstanding performance in the victory against then-no. 7/8 New Hampshire, All-American senior defensive end Adrian Tracy was selected as a College Sporting News National All-Star and as the CAA Defensive Player of the Week. The honor marked the second straight week, and the third time this season, that a W&M player has earned the distinction. Tracy led the Tribe with a team-high seven tackles to go with a pair of sacks and 3.0 tackles for a loss. Additionally, he helped the defensive unit hold UNH to jut 226 total yards and 27 yards on the ground. Tracy vs. the Spiders Adrian Tracy has posted big performances in all three of the Tribe s games against Richmond during his career. Versus the Spiders, he has totaled 25 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 4.0 TFLs and a forced fumble. As a freshman Tracy totaled eight tackles with 0.5 TFL, while he recorded seven tackles, a sack, 2.0 TFLs, a forced fumble and a PBU as a sophomore. In last season s matchup, he recorded a team-high 10 tackles to go with 1.5 sacks and 1.5 TFLs. Game 11 No. 5 William & Mary vs. No. 4 Richmond Nov. 21, 2009 Noon UR Stadium 15

Game Notes Lissemore s Impact While the significance of senior all-conference candidate defensive tackle Sean Lissemore s impact is sometimes not seen in the box score, that hasn t been the case this season in conference play. Through six CAA games, he has totaled 36 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 8.5 TFL and an interception. Lissemore has recorded 11 TFL this season and currently ranks tied for eighth in the conference. More on Lissemore In addition to his impressive sack and TFL totals, Lissemore has also come up big with a pair of interceptions this season, both of which have come deep in opponents territory and set up touchdowns. His first pick this season came at Northeastern and gave W&M starting field position at the 10, while his interception against New Hampshire set the Tribe up at the 16. Tackle Totals While Adrian Tracy and Sean Lissemore have been outstanding in making stops behind the line of scrimmage, both also rank among the league s top 10 in tackles among defensive linemen. Tracy currently ranks fifth with 5.7 tackles per game, while Lissemore is 10th with 4.8 tackles per game. Herbert Adding up the TFLs Senior defensive end C.J. Herbert has consistently applied pressure in the backfield recently, as he has recorded at least one tackle for a loss in each of the last four games. Hands Up In addition to making stops behind the line of scrimmage, Herbert has been effective knocking down passes at the line of scrimmage in the last two games with four PBUs. The senior defensive tackle batted down a pair of passes against both Towson and New Hampshire. Knocking it Loose Herbert has also made an impact with a pair of forced fumbles this season, as knocked balls loose against Central Connecticut State and James Madison. Maximum Impact Although junior defensive tackle Bryan Jean-Pierre has served as a reserve this season, he has made a significant impact recently. In addition to recording a tackle for a loss in three of the last five games, he registered a sack and a forced fumble (on the same play) in the win against Towson. Stover Stepping Up Junior defensive tackle Michael Stover has come on strong in the past four games with 5 tackles for a loss and 1.5 sacks. His best effort came in the win at Rhode Island when he registered 3.0 TFLs and a sack, while he equaled a career high with five tackles against Towson. Stover also came up with a key play in the victory against then-no. 7/8 New Hampshire. With UNH down by just three and less than two minutes remaining, Stover batted down a pass at the line of scrimmage on a fourth-down play to give W&M possession and help secure the win. A Key Reserve While he is currently coming off the bench as a reserve, sophomore defensive end Marcus Hyde is showing why he will likely find his way into the starting unit in the coming seasons. In the last four contests, Hyde has totaled 4.0 tackles for a loss, 3.0 sacks, two quarterback hurries, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. His best effort came at URI when he recorded 3.0 TFLs, 2.0 sacks and a forced fumble. O Brien Scores for the Tribe Reserve junior defensive end Kyle O Brien put points on the scoreboard for W&M in the victory at Rhode Island when he recorded a safety late in the fourth quarter. The big play was O Brien s first career sack. Linebacker Notes Steinman a Force Behind the Line Junior linebacker Wes Steinman has been very effective making stops behind the line of scrimmage this season and currently ranks just outside the league s top 10 with 9.5 TFLs. Steinman has recorded at least 0.5 TFL in eight consecutive games. Evan Everywhere Junior all-conference candidate linebacker Evan Francks has been the Tribe s leading tackler in three of the last five games. He established career highs in back-to-back weeks with 11 tackles in the wins against Northeastern and James Madison. Francks currently leads the team with 67 tackles. On the Ball With his fumble recovery in the second quarter against James Madison, junior linebacker Evan Francks increased his season total to a team-high three. Earlier this season, Francks recorded a pair of fumble recoveries in the win at Virginia. No Signs of a Sophomore Slump After making a significant impact for the Tribe as one of the CAA s top freshmen last season, linebacker Jake Trantin is currently posting an outstanding sophomore season. The Odenton, Md., native currently ranks second on the team with 64 tackles, 5.5 TFLs, 1.5 sacks, two interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Cook Earns First Career Start Redshirt freshman linebacker Dante Cook earned his first career start in the Tribe s victory against then-no. 7/8 New Hampshire. Cook filled in for regular starting outside linebacker Wes Steinman, who was limited in practice during the week with illness. Although Steinman came off the bench to play the majority of the contest, Cook finished with a pair of solo tackles. Defensive Back Notes All-conference candidate junior linebacker Evan Francks currently leads the Tribe with 67 tackles this season. Fantastic Freshman Redshirt freshman cornerback B.W. Webb currently ranks tied for 12th nationally with five interceptions. Three of Webb s picks came in the season-opening victory at Virginia, while his other interception came at Northeastern and against New Hampshire. Cottingham Plays Big Although junior cornerback Ben Cottingham stands just 5-9 and 159 pounds, he posted a huge effort in the Tribe s victory against then-no. 7/8 New Hampshire. In addition to registering a season-high six tackles, he broke up a pair of passes and notched a quarterback hurry. His impressive effort helped the Tribe defense limit UNH to just 199 yards passing, as W&M has not allowed more than 200 yards passing in four straight games, Caldwell s Impressive Career Senior all-conference candidate safety David Caldwell currently ranks in the top 50 nationally among all active players with 263 tackles. Additionally, he ranks 13th with 153 solo stops. Caldwell led the team in tackles as both a sophomore (107) and a junior (78). 16 Game 11 No. 5 William & Mary vs. No. 4 Richmond Nov. 21, 2009 Noon UR Stadium

Game Notes Wells Earns First Career Interception Junior cornerback Terrell Wells earned his first career interception in the 31-0 victory against Towson. The key interception helped preserve W&M s first shutout since 2005, as his pick came at the Tribe 2-yard line and ended the Tiger s lone trip into the Red Zone. Special Teams Notes Among the Best After earning all-conference honors as a sophomore, junior All- America candidate punter David Miller continues to establish himself among the nation s best, as he leads the league and ranks eighth nationally with 42.1 yards per punt. Net Punting In addition to Miller s outstanding punting average, the Tribe leads the conference and ranks 12th nationally in net punting with an average of 36.7 yards per kick. Pate in the National Rankings Senior place-kicker Brian Pate currently ranks fourth nationally with 1.8 field goals made per game. Earlier this season, he established a school record in the win at Virginia when he connected on four field goals. Pate also ranks 17th nationally in scoring with 8.3 points per game. With 18 field goals this season, Pate is rapidly closing in on the single-season school record of 21 established by Steve Christie in With 40 career field goals, he ranks fifth at the College all-time and tied for ninth nationally among all active players. Additionally, he ranks 10th all-time in the CAA. Big Returns Redshirt freshman B.W. Webb has established himself as one of the nation s top punt returners this season, as he currently ranks second in the CAA and 30th nationally with 8.78 yards per return. His longest return of the season was a 42-yard scamper in the win against CCSU. A Full Workload After attempting 16 field goals all of last season, senior place-kicker Brian Pate has already attempted 27 this season - a figure that leads the nation. Covering Kickoffs The Tribe s kickoff coverage unit has been outstanding this season and currently ranks 23rd nationally by allowing just 18.3 yards per return. In Case You Missed It All-America candidate place-kicker Brian Pate ranks fourth nationally with 1.8 field goals per game and needs just four more field goals to break the single-season school record (21) set by Steve Christie in Towson Notes Shutout With its 31-0 blanking of Towson, the Tribe posted its first shutout since a 56-0 triumph against Liberty in W&M nearly accomplished the feat on two occasions earlier this season, as it held Norfolk State scoreless until midway through the fourth quarter while James Madison managed just a field goal the entire game. If the Tribe records another shutout this season, it will mark the first time since 1995 (Northeastern, New Hampshire) that W&M blanked two opponents during the same season. Streak Continues The Tribe s 31-0 win over Towson last Saturday marked the unit s 14th-straight win over an unranked FCS opponent. The College s last loss to an unranked FCS school came back in 2007, when it fell to a thenunranked Villanova squad, 63-24, on the mainline. Taming the Tigers The Tribe defensive unit posted another outstanding effort in its last outing, a 31-0 victory against Towson. In addition to recording the program s first shutout since 2005, W&M held the Tigers to just 201 yards of total offense and just 72 yards on the ground. Additionally the College equaled a season best by allowing just 11 first downs. Perhaps the most impressive fact worth noting, however, is that Towson moved across the 50-yard line just once. Trantin Honored as CAA Defensive Player of the Week After an outstanding performance in the victory against Towson, sophomore linebacker Jake Trantin was selected as the Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week. Trantin recorded a team-high eight tackles (five solo) with an interception and a tackle for a loss in the Tribe s 31-0 victory against the Tigers. The win marked W&M s first shutout since blanking Liberty, 56-0, in In addition to posting the shutout, Trantin helped the defensive unit limit TU to just 201 total yards. A First While Adrian Tracy has filled up nearly every column of the stat sheet during his illustrious career, he had yet to recover a fumble until the victory against Towson. The All-American recorded his first career fumble when fellow lineman Bryan Jean-Pierre sacked TU quarterback Tommy Chroniger and knocked loose that ball on the final play of the third quarter. Rhode Island Notes A Day to Remember The Tribe defensive unit posted one of the most dominant performances in school history in the victory at Rhode Island last weekend. Highlighting the effort was the rushing defense that established a school record by allowing -46 rushing yards on 28 carries (-1.6 yards per carry), which broke the previous mark of -39 set against Colgate (1988) and Villanova (1996). Additionally, W&M surrendered a season-best 149 yards of total offense, which marked the fewest yards allowed since allowing 145 at Delaware last season. W&M also set a season best by allowing just 11 first downs and held the Rams to just 3-of-16 on third down conversions. Additionally, W&M forced 3-and-outs on nine of the Rams 15 possessions and forced a season-high 10 punts. Getting Behind the Line W&M was outstanding making stops behind the line of scrimmage in the two contests against James Madison and Rhode Island, totaling 23 TFLs in the two victories. The Tribe recorded 11 TFLs against the Dukes before establishing a school-record 14 against the Rams. It was a complete team effort, as eight different players recorded at least 1.0 TFL versus JMU while nine different players had at least 0.5 TFL against URI. Miller Honored as CAA Special Teams Player of the Week All-America candidate junior punter David Miller was honored as the CAA Special Teams Player of the Week following his impressive performance in the win at Rhode Island. Miller averaged 48.7 yards per punt on six kicks and set a career best with a 71-yard punt in the fourth quarter. He finished the day with three punts longer than 50 yards (including a 60-yarder), and pinned the Rams inside the 20 three times. James Madison Notes Grimes Grinds Dukes The following are a few bullet points on sophomore tailback Jonathan Grimes performance against James Madison, which earned him the CAA s Offensive Player of the Week honors: He gained 158-yards (on 20 carries), which was a career-high and stands as the 22ndbest single game performance in school history. Grimes previous best came against then-fourthranked New Hampshire, when he scampered for 144 yards on 22 carries. Grimes had a season long run of 61 yards in the first quarter that set up the Tribe s first touchdown of the game He also scored the team s final TD, on a nine-yard fourth-quarter sprint to pay-dirt. Game 11 No. 5 William & Mary vs. No. 4 Richmond Nov. 21, 2009 Noon UR Stadium 17

Game Notes He is the first back to run for over 100-yards against JMU this season. Additionally, he is the first Tribe tailback to gain more than 100-rushing yards against JMU since 2001 (Jonathan Smith). He ended the game with a season-high 202 all-purpose yards (12 receiving and 32 in kick returns) It was Grimes fourth-career 100-yard rushing effort, including the first this season The 158-yard effort was the highest single-game total for a Tribe back since 2006, when then senior Elijah Brooks ran for 165 in the team s win over Towson. Setting a Season Low W&M established a season best by allowng just three points againt James Madison. It marked the first time this season that the Tribe had held an opponent without a touchdown. Additionally, it was the fewest points allowed by the Tribe since defeating Delaware, 27-3, last season. Slowing Down the Dukes By limiting James Madison to just 216 yards of total offense, it marked the second-fewest yards allowed by the Tribe this season to that point (Norfolk State - 206). JMU s total was more than 100 yards fewer than its season average entering the contest (330.7). Limiting JMU s Air Attack The Tribe did an excellent job shutting down the Dukes air attack, as it allowed just seven completions for 66 yards. It was the fewest completions by a W&M opponent since VMI totaled three last season, while the yardage was the least surrendered by the College since Delaware threw for 45 yards last year. Ballanced Attack W&M recorded a double-digit TFL total for the second time this season when it tallied 11.0 stops behind the line of scrimmage against James Madison. Perhaps even more impressive was the fact that eight different players had at least 1.0 TFL. Causing Turnovers After causing three turnovers against Northeastern, the Tribe forced a pair of turnovers against James Madison. It marked the first time this season that W&M has forced multiple turnovers in consecutive games. Northeastern Notes Lots of Stops After allowing a touchdown to Northeastern on its second offensive possession of the contest, the Tribe defensive unit didn t allow a score on the Huskies next 11 possessions. During that stretch, the Tribe forced three turnovers and allowed just 112 total yards on 48 plays - just 2.3 yards per play. Ending Drives W&M posted one of its best performances of the year in third and fourth down situations against Northeastern, as it limited the Huskies to just 3-of-16 conversions (3-of-14 on third downs and 0-of-2 on fourth downs). Can We Get Those Back? Although the Tribe s defensive effort against Northeastern was impressive - allowing just 277 yards of total offense - the performance would have been much better if not for three big plays that accounted for 144 yards. Excluding those plays, the Tribe surrendered just 133 yards on 58 plays (2.3 yards per play). Shutting Down the Run The Tribe demonstrated why it boasts one of the nation s top run defenses in its contest against Northeastern, as it held the Huskies to just 39 yards rushing on 33 carries (1.2 ypc). W&M was particularly effective shuting down NU s ground attack in the second half when it allowed just 15 yards on 17 carries (0.9 ypc). Creating Turnovers After forcing seven turnovers in the season-opening victory at Virginia, the Tribe had been unable to post a multi-turnover game until facing Northeastern. W&M ended the four-game streak by creating three turnovers against the Huskies - all of which came in the second half. Setting up Touchdowns In addition to forcing three turnovers against Northeastern, all three of the turnovers helped provide excellent starting field position for the offense. B.W. Webb s interception gave W&M starting field position at NU s 37, while Sean Lissemore s pick gave the Tribe possession at the Huskies 8 -- both drives ended in touchdowns. Although it didn t lead to points (missed field goal), Wes Steinman s fumble recovery occured at NU s 19-yard line. Halting the Huskies Junior linebacker Evan Francks and sophomore linebacker Jake Trantin both posted impressive performances at Northeastern by recording double-digit tackle totals. Francks established a career-high 11 stops, while Trantin recorded 10 tackles. Career Day Junior punter David Miller posted one of his best performances of his career against Northeastern, as he pinned the Huskies inside their own 20-yard line on all four of his punts. Highlighting the afternoon was a career-long 67-yard punt that pinned NU at its own 1-yard line. Villanova Notes Odd Outing The College s set-back at No. 2 Villanova produced some very odd statistical anomalies. The Tribe out gained a very powerful Villanova attack by nearly 200 yards (472 to 283). In terms of first downs, the College racked up 27 to just 15 for the Wildcats, while converting 10 of its 19 third down attempts (compared to just three successful third down conversions in 10 attempts for VU). For the fourth-time in five games, the Tribe had the advantage in time of possession, holding the ball for 32:36 (to the Wildcats 27:24). The College even punted less times (three to five), converted two of its three fourth down attempts (compared to VU going 0-1 on the afternoon) and collected more sacks (6 to 5) and TFLs (8-7). Out of Character Another area the Tribe held a large statistical advantage in the Villanova contest was in terms of penalty yards, as the Tribe was flagged eight times for 75 yards, compared to just two flags on Nova for just 15 yards. The game marked the third time in the first five games of the year that the College has collected more penalties than the opponent. Overall, the Tribe has been flagged 34 times for 308 yards, compared to 27 flags for 246 yards for the opposition. Rare Mistake When Villanova forced and recovered a fumble late in the second quarter, it marked the first lost fumble for a Tribe tailback since last season s contest at Delaware (a span of 10 games). Details In its first five possessions of the contest vs. Villanova, the College had at a penalty (two times), turnover (two) or sack (one) in each. Also against Villanova, the College put together four different drives of 11-plus plays, the shortest of which covered 48 yards. It was forced into a three-and-out only once on the afternoon. The Tribe managed to score only one TD in its five visits inside the Wildcat 20-yard line, while Nova hammered out three touchdowns in each of its ventures inside the College s red zone. Archer Active One week removed from setting his career-best in passing yards (with 313 in the win over Delaware), Tribe senior all-conference candidate at quarterback, RJ Archer had another career effort in the team s loss at Villanova. On the afternoon that saw the College looking to chase down the lead, Archer led the charge by re-setting his personal record with 354 passing yards. He arrived at the big number by attempting a school-record 55 passes and set another school record in completing 35 of them. The 354 yard-effort stands the 15th best single-game in school history. 18 Game 11 No. 5 William & Mary vs. No. 4 Richmond Nov. 21, 2009 Noon UR Stadium

Game Notes Tenacious Tailback Anyone close to the Tribe football program who is watching the current play of sophomore tailback Jonathan Grimes, the reigning CAA Rookie of the Year, could use any number of adjective to describe his current level of play, but tenacious is probably the best description of his 17-carry, 95-yard afternoon vs. Villanova. Playing against an inspired Wildcat defense, Grimes and the College s offensive front matched the intensity and produced one of the season s finest efforts. Grimes was not dropped for any lost yardage on any of his 17 attempts and he also added a season-high seven receptions for another 51 yards. When adding in his two kick returns for 32 yards, Grimes ended the affair with a game-high 178 all-purpose yards. Slowing Down the Wildcats Although Villanova boasted one of the nation s top-rated offenses and averaged ypg entering its contest with W&M, the Tribe held the Wildcats to just 283 yards. More Than Just a Reserve While sophomore defensive end Ravi Pradhanang came off the bench for the opening four games this season, he demonstrated why he will be a fixture in the Tribe lineup in the future with his performances against Delaware and Villanova. With starting defensive end C.J. Herbert out with an injury, Pradhanang has stepped into the starting role and recorded a sack and a TFL versus UD and two sacks at VU. In his only other career start prior to this fall - in the season finale last year against Richmond (also filling in for Herbert) - Pradhanang tallied a pair of TFLs. Nice Kick In addition to converting all three of his field goal attempts at Villanova, senior place-kicker Brian Pate made a season-long 44-yard try. The impressive kick was just one yard short of his career long that he made against Massachusetts in Two is Better Than One When quarterback R.J. Archer connected with tight end Rob Varno on a short two-point conversion completion at Villanova, it marked the first time since 2004 that the Tribe had converted a two-point conversion. W&M s previous conversion came against James Madison in the NCAA semifinal game that year. Delaware Notes Good Start The Tribe s win over Delaware marked the first time since the 2004 season that William & Mary was able to open its CAA slate with a victory. That season, the College defeated a then 10th-ranked New Hampshire squad, 9-7, in the second game of the season. On the subject of conference openers, the College has averaged nearly nine wins (8.8) over the six previous seasons it has started the league slate with a victory. W&M has never failed to win less than seven games in a season in which it started conference play with a victory. All four NCAA playoff appearances since 1993 have come in seasons that have started with a victory in conference play. Conversely, in the 10 seasons W&M has lost its conference opener, the Tribe has averaged fewer than six wins (5.2) and has never won more than a total of seven games in any of those seasons, although, one of those seven wins seasons came last year, as the Tribe fell in the CAA opener against 14th-ranked Villanova. Archer Honored After an outstanding performance in the victory against Delaware on Saturday, senior quarterback R.J. Archer was selected as the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Offensive Player of the Week. It was his first career recognition, but likely not his last, as the fifth-year senior has been nothing short of sensational in his first year at the controls of the Tribe attack. Archer completed 23-of-37 passes for a career-high 313 yards with two touchdowns in the victory against the Blue Hens. Highlighting the outstanding effort was a 91-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Chase Hill deep down the middle of the field to give the Tribe a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. The electrifying play was the longest pass in the 115-year history of the program. Did You Know? The College s last four wins over Delaware (2002, 2004, 2008 and 2009) were all fashioned with the Tribe starting a fifth-year senior at the quarterback position (David Corley, Jr., Lang Campbell, Jake Phillips and RJ Archer, respectively). Adding Up the Losses The Tribe established a season-high 12 tackles for a loss against the Blue Hens, which marked the most stops behind the line of scrimmage for W&M since totaling 12 against Richmond in W&M s defensive unit has had success against the Blue Hens during the past two seasons, as its last double-digit TFL total came at Delaware last season (11). Additionally, W&M s five sacks against the Blue Hens this season marked the most by the College since equaling that mark at Towson in More on the Rushing Defense By shutting down the rushing attacks of NSU (29 yards) and UD (-2 yards) in consecutive contests, it marked the first time since 1996 that the Tribe has held two opponents to less than 50 yards rushing in one season. The 96 edition of the Tribe accomplished the feat three times. Keeping the Blue Hens Grounded W&M posted one of the program s best performances against the run in the victory against Delaware, as it limited the Blue Hens to -2 yards on the ground. The rushing total was the secondfewest ever by the Blue Hens in school history. Although the final total was impressive, the Tribe s defensive unit nearly recorded an even better mark as Delaware had -22 yards rushing until its final offensive drive yielded 20 yards on the ground. First the Pass, Then the Run While the Tribe s defense was outstanding against Delaware s rushing attack this year (holding the Blue Hens to -2 rushing yards), W&M was nearly as effective against the Blue Hen s passing attack in 2008 as it allowed just 45 yards through the air. Bouncing Back Although senior All-American defensive end Adrian Tracy totaled just one tackle in the victory at Norfolk State, he bounced back with a huge effort in the win against Delaware with a pair of sacks, 3.5 TFL and a PBU to go with his six tackles. Big Performance by Miller Junior all-confernece punter David Miller recorded his best performance of the season in the win against Delaware, as he averaged 46.2 yards per punt (four punts). He also kicked a season-long 58-yard punt versus the Blue Hens. Forcing Punts The Tribe defense was outstanding in the opening half against Delaware, as it forced the Blue Hens to punt on each of its first six possessions. In all, the Tribe forced UD to punt a seasonhigh nine times. Closing the Contest While the Tribe ranked among the country s top 20 in fewest points allowed per game (15.75) through the first four contests, it could easily be ranked much higher if not for a number of late scores in the waning minutes versus Norfolk State and Delaware. UD put 13 points on the board in the final 2:37, while NSU totaled 15 points in the final 6:37. Excluding those late scores when the games outcomes were no longer in jeopardy, W&M allowed just 35 points through four games. Norfolk State Notes Don t Blink The Tribe s win over Norfolk State (Sept. 19) took only 2:25 to complete, a full 20 minutes quicker than the Tribe s last next fastest game of the season (week two win over Central Connecticut State, which took 2:42). In comparison, the team s quickest game of the 2008 seasons was a 2:35 affair against the University of Delaware (a 27-3 Tribe win). The contest against Norfolk State was the fastest completed game since at least the 2002 season, with the 2:27 win over Richmond to end the 2004 season being the next closest. Born to Run While junior punter David Miller did not attempt any punts in the win at Norfolk State (marking just the second time in the last four seasons W&M has not punted in a game), he did Game 11 No. 5 William & Mary vs. No. 4 Richmond Nov. 21, 2009 Noon UR Stadium 19

Game Notes come up with a big first down on a fake punt. Facing a fourth-and-two on W&M s own 21-yard line, Miller kept the scoring drive alive when he lined up to punt but instead raced 12 yards down the right sideline to pick up a first down. Fred Johnson Honored as W&M QB Club Special Teams Player of the Week Senior Fred Johnson made a significant impact on special teams coverage in the win against Norfolk State, as he totaled three solo tackles. He was honored for the performance by being selected as the W&M QB Club Special Teams Player of the Week. Central Connecticut State Notes Record Setting By ending the game against Central Connecticut State with 80 yards (on 19 attempts), Jonathan Grimes has pushed his career-rushing total over the 1,000 yard mark (1,055). Grimes surpassed the 1000-yard mark in just 13 career games, making him the fastest player to the milestone in school history. By comparison, Derek Fitzgerald, the Tribe s all-time leading rusher (3,744 career yards amassed between the seasons), took 15 career starts to hit the milestone. Among the Tribe s top 10 performers on the career-rushing list, Fitzgerald 15-game total is tied with Jon Smith ( ) for the quickest to 1,000 career rushing yards. Did You Know? One has to go back to the 2004 season to find the last time a Tribe quarterback rushed for more yards than the 63 Archer posted in the Tribe s win over Central Connecticut State (Sept. 12), when eventual Payton Award winning signal caller Lang Campbell slashed the Hampton University defense for 71 yards (on nine attempts) in the opening round of the NCAA Playoffs (a Tribe win). Webb Honored as CAA Special Teams Player of the Week A week after garnering numerous national player of the week honors for his performance in the season-opening win at Virginia, freshman cornerback B.W. Webb was selected as the CAA Special Teams Player of the Week following the victory against CCSU. Webb returned three punts for 89 yards (29.7 yds per return) against the Blue Devils, including a long of 42 yards early in the fourth quarter. He also registered a 32-yard return late in the third quarter. You Can Go Home Again Playing against a lineup primarily filled with players from his home state of Connecticut, senior wide out DJ McAulay s sent a message back to his hometown that he was still a force to be reckoned with, as the speedy senior made a pair of spectacular grabs, the first sparking a Tribe TD drive and the second ending one. The former was a 48-yard downfield strike that saw him elevate in traffic and make a leaping fingertip grab, which placed the College on the Blue Devil 17-yard line (and set up a 17-yard TD pass on the next snap). The latter was an equally eye-catching leaping connection that saw him out-battle the CCSU corner to bring in a 21-yard TD spiral. He ended the game with three receptions for 70 yards. Virginia Notes What a Debut! Redshirt freshman cornerback B.W. Webb posted one of the most memorable debuts in the history of the Tribe program with his incredible performance in the win at Virginia. The Newport News, Va., native intercepted three passes and returned his final pick 50 yards down the W&M sideline for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to help secure the victory. The electric play was recognized on national television later in the evening when ESPN Sports Center featured it as the day s No. 5 Top Play. For his effort, Webb was selected as the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA)/ Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week, marking the first time a player from a FCS program had won the honor since the award s inception in He was also chosen as the Sports Network National Player of the Week and as a College Sporting News All-Star. Additionally, his long list of accolades included being tabbed as the Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week. A Homecoming Tribe senior quarterback R.J. Archer certainly looked every bit the part of a seasoned veteran at the controls of the Tribe offense. Despite having just one career start at quarterback to his credit and playing in front of 55,000-plus fans in what is essentially his hometown, Archer turned in a game for the ages in leading the College to the upset at Virginia. He lead the team in rushing, with 46 yards on nine attempts and finished the game with 184 passing yards (completing 23 passes in 44 attempts). He engineered a seven-play, 81-yard scoring drive in the first quarter that was capped when he threw a dart on the run to TE Rob Varno for a five-yard score. All of this was impressive against a well regarded Virginia defense, but what was perhaps most impressive about his performance were the things he didn t do, namely throw interceptions (just one, late in the third quarter) or take drive stalling sacks (giving up just one for a loss of four yards). His composure in the pocket allowed him to see the entire field and use all the weapons in the Tribe s offense, as he completed passes to seven different receivers (four different WR, a pair of backs and a TE). When forced out of the pocket, he was equally relaxed and made solid decisions on when to attempt to extend a play down field, or when to tuck and run. His work allowed the College to chew up over 34 crucial minutes of game clock and kept the team on the plus side of the field position game for the majority of the afternoon. Did You Know? The College s 1986 win over the Cavaliers also featured a senior quarterback who was in his first season as the starting quarterback (Ken Lambiotte). Lambiotte threw for 307 yards and accounted for five touchdowns in the victory en route to being honored as Sports Illustrated Offensive Player of the Week. Like Archer, Lambiotte had some Charlottesville roots, as he started his athletic career at the University of Virginia before transferring to William and Mary prior to the 1985 season. Pick-Sixes B.W. Webb s pick-six in the triumph at Virginia marked the second consecutive season in which a Tribe players has returned an interception for a touchdown in the season opener. In the 08 opener at N.C. State, Derek Cox, who now plays for the Jacksonville Jaguars, returned an interception 45 yards for a score. Last season, W&M found the end zone three times via pick-sixes, as Cox also returned an interception for a touchdown versus Northeastern, while David Caldwell did so against Rhode Island. Webb s performance also marked the first time a Tribe player recorded a multipleinterception game since Ben Cottingham accomplished the feat at Richmond in Shutting Down the Cavaliers In addition to causing seven turnovers in the win at Virginia, the Tribe s defensive unit held the Cavaliers to just 268 yards of total offense (just 137 passing). Additionally, W&M limited UVA to just 12 first downs and dominated the time of possession by more than 11 minutes (35:36-24:24). The College s effort was especially impressive in the second half, as it held the Cavaliers scoreless and allowed just 79 yards and four first downs. Creating Takeaways While the 2008 edition of the Tribe was incredibly effective in creating turnovers (totaling 20 takeaways), the team got off to an even better start this season after forcing seven in the win at Virginia. The impressive total marked the most turnovers by a Tribe opponent since the 1996 season when Central Florida and Delaware both had six. Pate Ties School Record Preseason All-American place-kicker Brian Pate played a key role in the Tribe s win at Virginia, as he equaled a school record with four made field goals. The Fredericksburg, Va., native connected on his attempts from 40, 26, 24 and 20 yards. Pate was already the program s singlegame record holder for made extra points with nine, which he established against VMI in Third Down Stops After allowing just 54 third-down conversions on 156 opportunities (35 percent) last season, the Tribe picked up right where it left off from a year ago in the season opener at Virginia, allowing just five conversions on 17 chances. Strong Leg Preseason All-American punter David Miller got the 2009 campaign off to a good start by averaging 44.4 yards per punt (on eight punts) in the win at Virginia. Miller also pinned the Cavaliers inside the 20 on a pair of occasions. 20 Game 11 No. 5 William & Mary vs. No. 4 Richmond Nov. 21, 2009 Noon UR Stadium

Game Notes Last season, he was a third-team all-conference selection after averaging 41.5 yards per punt. General Notes Nationally Ranked Turnover Margin The Tribe ranked 12th nationally with a +1.5 turnover margin per game (+6 total) during its season-opening four-game winning streak. During the stretch, W&M forced its opponents into 10 turnovers (six fumbles gained/four interceptions gained) while committing just four. First and Third The College was virtually impossible to score against in the fist and third quarters during its season-opening four-game winning streak, allowing a total of just seven points during the two quarters. The lone score came on Virginia s first possession in the season opener. Among the Best By allowing just 43 points through the opening three games, this year s defensive unit has allowed the second-fewest points by a Tribe team in the last 30 years. Only the 1998 team allowed fewer through the first three contests (34). Preseason Honors Tribe players garnered a bevy of preseason accolades this summer, as five W&M standouts earned All-America honors from various organizations. Preseason Buchanan Award Watch List honoree Adrian Tracy highlighted the list with three All-America nods (College Sporting News, The Sports Network, Phil Steele Magazine), while senior place-kicker Brian Pate earned the distinction from a pair of outlets (CSN and SN). Sophomore running back Jonathan Grimes, senior safety David Caldwell and junior punter David Miller were also selected to All-America teams. A complete list of the Tribe s preseason honors can be found on page 9. Stability at the Top Much of the Tribe s success during the past three decades can be directly attributed to the stability of the coaching staff. Head Coach Jimmye Laycock entered his 30th season at the helm of the W&M program and guided it to a record. He currently owns the fourthlongest tenure at one school in the nation, trailing only Joe Paterno (44), Bob Ford (37) and Bobby Bowden (34). Offensive coordinator Zbig Kepa has also been a constant on W&M s sidelines for much of the past three decades, as he enters his 26th season with the College. In addition to the continuity at the top, the Tribe returns its entire coaching staff from last season. High Achiever Tribe alumnus Mike Tomlin 95 guided the Pittsburgh Steelers to the XLIII Super Bowl Title last season, leading his charges to a win over the Arizona Cardinals. Tomlin joins a host of former Tribe players in the NFL ranks, which includes current players in Pro Bowl safety Darren Sharper (New Orleans Saints), long-snapper Mike Leach (Arizona Cardinals) and 2009 third-round selection, cornerback Derek Cox (Jacksonville Jaguars). Tomlin isn t the first Tribe graduate to lead an NFL squad, as Dan Henning 64 had two head coaching stints (Atlanta Falcons, /San Diego Chargers, ). Currently, Henning is the offensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins. Tomlin also isn t the first coach with strong ties to Williamsburg to lead a squad to the Super Bowl, as former William and Mary mentor Marv Levy ( ) led the Buffalo Bills to four Super Sundays in his Hall of Fame NFL Coaching career. Interestingly, one of Tomlin s contemporaries from his playing days with the College, Sean McDermott 97, was recently promoted to defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles. Tribal Tidbit The last time a Tribe quarterback entered his first full season as a starter as a senior was in 1995, when Matt Byrne took over the reigns of a Tribe offense having started just two games in his career to that point. Both of his career starts prior to the 95 season came during in 1994, when he subbed for injured then-starter Shawn Knight. Coincidently, William and Mary also opened the 1995 campaign in Scott Stadium (a game that stands as the Tribe s last visit to Charlottesville). Everyone s All-American After earning All-America honors from the College Sporting News and the Sports Network last season, senior captain defensive end Adrian Tracy piled up a number of preseason accolades this year. In addition to earning All-America distinction from the College Sporting News, Sports Network and Phil Steele s magazine, Tracy was selected as the CAA Preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year and chosen to the Buchanan Award watch list. In addition to ranking sixth nationally with 0.91 sacks per game in 2008, Tracy led the league with 1.41 tackles for a loss per game, which ranked 20th nationally. The Sterling, Va., native also ranked second in the CAA among defensive linemen with 6.5 tackles per game and finished the year with 72 tackles, 15.5 tackles for a loss, 10.0 sacks and one blocked kick. Fantastic Front Four The Tribe defensive unit will be anchored by one of the most talented and experienced defensive lines in the nation this season. All-American, Buchanan Award watch list honoree and Preseason CAA Co-Defensive Player of the Year Adrian Tracy leads the group, while seniors C.J. Herbert and Sean Lissemore entered the fall with 32 and 21 career starts to their credit, respectively. Sophomore Harold Robertson III also earned starts in all 11 games last season. In addition to Tracy s long list of preseason accolades, Lissemore and Herbert both garnered preseason all-conference distinction from Phil Steele s magazine. New Look at the Linebacker Position With the graduation of multi-year starting linebackers Josh Rutter and Michael Pigram, the Tribe linebacking corps entered the season with a new look. Sophomore Jake Trantin, a returning starter from last season, anchors the unit in the middle and is joined by juniors Evan Francks and Wes Steinman. Franks earned five starts last season, four of which came when Rutter was out with an injury, and finished 2008 with 47 tackles, 2.0 TFL, an interception and a recovered fumble. Steinman returns to the mix this season and earned a starting spot after missing nearly all of last season with an injury sustained in the season opener at N.C. State. Unheralded Star Although senior captain strong safety David Caldwell has led the Tribe in tackles during each of the last two seasons, he is yet to garner any all-conference honors. That fact is startling when considering he recorded 107 tackles as a sophomore and ranked fifth among the league s defensive backs with 7.1 tackles per games last year. Caldwell also accounted for a pair of touchdowns last fall, as he found the end zone with an interception return against Rhode Island and returned a blocked field goal versus Norfolk State. Some are beginning to take notice, however, as he was chosen as a preseason All-American by the College Sporting News. Going to the Next Level After establishing himself as one of the best cornerbacks in the program s history, Derek Cox became the Tribe s second-highest NFL draft pick when he was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the third round with the 73rd overall pick. Cox joins Darren Sharper (New Orleans Saints) and Mike Leach (Arizona Cardinals) as W&M alumni on active NFL rosters. Pate Garners Preseason All-America Honors After garnering first-team all-league honors as a junior last season, place-kicker Brian Pate earned preseason All-America distinction from the College Sporting News and Sports Network this fall. Additionally, he was named to the preseason All-CAA team and received preseason firstteam all-league accolades from Phil Steele s magazine. Last season, Pate connected on 13-of-16 field goal attempts, including 3-of-4 from beyond 40 yards, and converted all 41 of his extra-point opportunities. The Fredericksburg, Va., native also led the team and ranked second in the conference with 7.3 points per game. Additionally, his average of 1.18 field goals per game led the league and ranked tied for 17th nationally. Pate also excelled in the classroom and earned a spot on the CAA All-Academic Team. Preseason Honors Roll in for Miller After earning third-team all-conference honors last season, punter David Miller was chosen as a preseason All-American by the College Sporting News. Additionally, the Centreville, Va., native was also selected to the preseason All-CAA team and garnered first-team all-league status from Phil Steele s magazine. In 2008, Miller ranked 16th nationally in punting with yards per kick. Additionally, he pinned the opposition inside the 20-yard line 12 times, while eight of his punts were longer than 50 yards. 27 Head Coach Jimmye Laycock William and Mary Head Coach Jimmye Laycock 30th Season Career Record: (.587) Comments From Monday s CAA Football Coaches Conference Call: Q: Talk a little about the win against New Hampshire. A: Well, I think we went head to head with a very good team. New Hampshire, as we anticipated, is very solid, very sound, very experienced, and I thought our players played very hard in every aspect of the game. There are certainly things you would like to do a little better here and there, but I thought we were relentless. We played hard, and we kept going. We came away with a big win. Q: Can you talk a little about Bob Shoop and what he has brought to the program? A: I think both the coaching and the players have improved a great deal over the last three years. Bob came in three years ago. He had a wealth of knowledge defensively, but you have to take it from the meeting rooms to the field. You have to know the players and the players have to understand things. He s done a good job working with the staff and working with the players and determining what we can and can t do. In coaching, sometimes it is just as important knowing what to do as knowing what not to do. I think he s really done a good job in developing our defensive staff, because it s not all Bob. We have Trevor Andrews, Scott Boone, and Trey Hendersen and Joe Vall-llobera on our defensive staff. It s all of them as well as our players who contribute. It s about everyone pulling together and working to improve and parking egos at the door and finding ways to get better. Q: Is what he s doing schematically that much different than what you all were doing back in 06? A: What we re doing now is playing defense more than playing defenses. You can draw up all the great coverages and stunts and fronts and things like that, but defense is a matter of playing hard, leverage, pad position, getting off blocks, running to the football, proper tackling and things like that. A lot of times defense is a mindset. Q: You think the winner of this game gets a seed in the playoffs? A: I don t know anything about that playoff stuff. It s been so long since I ve been in it that I don t know. Everyone else can figure that out better than I can. I just want to get ready for another ball game and see what happens after that. Q: Give me a quick scouting report on Eric Ward for Richmond. A: I am very impressed with Eric Ward. He s a winner. He finds a way to win, whether it s throwing, running, or just his leadership. I am very impressed. A lot was said about the Villanova game, but there was tremendous effort by him to get them down with virtually no time left to have a shot at the end. I thought that was great on his part. I really can appreciate those types of things out of a quarterback, and he s done a great job. Q: You have a few guys on your team who could get player of the year honors. Talk a little about R.J. Archer and Jonathan Grimes, and do you think they re deserving on the offensive side? A: That s for other people to determine. I certainly think that those guys have done a great job and have had great years for us. Jonathan plays hard and is an outstanding back. R.J. has had a great year at quarterback. This is a guy who came in and had played very few snaps at quarterback, and during his senior year he s leading us and being very efficient. I think both of them are outstanding, and they ve had outstanding years. Q: Given the way you guys run the ball and play defense, how has that affected the way you coach, especially on offense? Does it change what you try to do on offense given how well you all play defense? A: I don t know if it changes so much what we do. It may change when we do it depending on circumstances in the ball game. I have a lot of confidence in our defense, as I do our offense too. Again, we want to be unpredictable and do the things that we feel like we can do best. I think that s what we strive to do offensively; we try to put ourselves in the best position with personnel and that type of thing. I don t think that we really change what we do a whole lot though. Q: Can you talk a little about Coach London and his progression. A: Mike is a very good person and you can talk about his coaching and all tha,t but I think you start with the type of individual he is. That was the thing when he first joined our staff, I had heard all the good things about him as a person and certainly that was true and he s maintained that throughout his coaching career. He s always been the same person, and he s a good person who has done a great job at Richmond. Q: Is there some aspect of your team going into the season you were concerned about but now has turned out to be pretty good for you? A: There s a lot of things going into preseason you concern yourself about, but our offensive line has come through and gotten better and I think our receivers have come through and gotten better. I think with a first year quarterback he s handled himself very well. Those things are probably what would jump out initially, but now preseason seems like a very long time ago. Q: Was not reaching the playoffs last year a bit of a push to do better this year? A: I m sure that s something that hurt last year, but we didn t put a big emphasis on it. The emphasis was that we just need to get better and improve and not leave things to chance and just keep working hard. That s what this year s team has done. I don t think they ve been out to do anything about last year; you can t do anything about that. You have to do what you can with what you have this year, and play as well as you possibly can. That s what our players have been striving to do. The Laycock File Hometown: Hamilton, Va.
