4 RESULTS No. William & Mary Virginia Sept., 9 Scott Stadium Charlottesville, Va. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (9//9) -- Redshirt-freshman cornerback B.W. Webb intercepted three passes, including a -yard pick-six late in the fourth quarter, as the th-ranked William and Mary football team earned a - victory at Virginia in both teams season opener. The victory was the Tribe s first against an FBS opponent (formerly Division I-A) since defeating Temple, -, in 99. s defensive effort was outstanding all night long, as it caused seven turnovers and held the Cavaliers scoreless in the second half. Additionally, the Tribe limited Virginia to just 9 yards of total offense and first downs, with just 79 yards and four first downs coming in the second half. Both teams found the end zone in the opening quarter as the Cavaliers scored on a -yard run by quarterback Vic Hall, while R.J. Archer found Rob Varno with a five-yard strike. An -yard touchdown run by Jameel Sewell put UVA up -7 midway through the second quarter, but a pair of Brian Pate field goals (/ yds) drew the Tribe within one at halftime. After redshirt freshman Dante Cooke recovered a muffed punt by Hall at Virginia s 9-yard line, Pate gave the Tribe its first lead of the contest, -, when he booted in a -yard field goal from the right hash with : left in the third quarter. The Tribe s defensive unit remained tough and came up with a huge stop on a fourth-andone at midfield with 9: left when Trantin and senior defensive end Sean Lissemore stopped quarterback Marc Verica for no gain. (9//9) -- For the second consecutive week the William and Mary defensive unit held its opponent scoreless in the second half, as the No. 7 Tribe improved to - with a - victory against Central Connecticut State in its home opener at Zable Stadium on Sept.. Sophomore running back Jonathan Grimes made history in the triumph, as he became the fastest player in school history to total, career rushing yards doing so in just games. Among the College s top career rushers, Derek Fitzgerald and Jon Smith were the quickest to accomplish the feat ( games) prior to Grimes. As a team, the Tribe out-gained CCSU, 7-7, and dominated the ground game, -7. Senior quarterback R.J. Archer posted a good all-around effort, as he threw a pair of touchdowns and scored another on the ground. Grimes finished as the game s leading rusher with yards on 9 carries, while senor wideout D.J. McAulay led all receivers with three catches for 7 yards and a touchdown. The Tribe wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as it logged a -play, -yard drive on the game s opening series that culminated with a -yard touchdown run by Archer with 7: showing. A forced fumble by senior defensive end C.J. Herbert resulted in a safety, while a 7-yard touchdown run by junior running back Courtland Marriner increased the lead to -. (9/9/9) -- The fifth-ranked Tribe remained unbeaten as it improved to - with a 7- victory at Norfolk State on Sept. 9. With the victory, continued its best start since posting an identical mark to begin the 99 season. Senior quarterback R.J. Archer threw three touchdown passes all of which came in the first half and completed -of- passes for yards. Senior wide receiver D.J. McAulay totaled a game-high six catches for 7 yards with a pair of touchdowns, while sophomore running back Jonathan Grimes totaled a game-high 7 yards rushing to go with two catches for yards and a touchdown. The Tribe s defensive unit was dominant for much of the contest, as it held the Spartans scoreless until late in the fourth quarter. Additionally, the College limited NSU to yards of total offense and allowed just 9 rushing yards. also controlled the time of possession, 7:-:. After forcing Norfolk State to a three-and-out on the contest s opening series, the Tribe got on the scoreboard first when Archer found Grimes on a short pass on the left side that went for a -yard touchdown strike. An interception by sophomore linebacker Jake Trantin on the first play of NSU s next possession gave the Tribe excellent starting field position at the Spartans -yard line, and Archer connected with McAulay on a -yard touchdown strike three plays later to push the advantage to - midway through the opening quarter. McAulay recorded his second touchdown catch of the evening when he made a diving grab in the front right side of the end zone on a -yard pass from Archer with : remaining in the opening half to give the Tribe a - lead. The Tribe s - start is the program s best record to begin a season since it posted the same mark in 99. Senior quarterback R.J. Archer completed -of-7 passes for a career-high yards with two touchdowns, while junior wide receiver hauled in six-catches for a career-high yards with two touchdowns. Sophomore running back Jonathan Grimes also came up big with 9 yards rushing and a pair of scores. completely shut down the Blue Hens rushing attack and allowed - yards rushing on carries. (//9) -- The fifth-ranked William and Mary football team had its fourgame season-opening winning streak snapped with a -7 loss at No. Villanova on Oct.. The College dominated total yards, 7-, and controlled the time of possession by more than five minutes. However, committed a pair of turnovers and only scored one touchdown in its five trips into the red zone. The total yardage was especially lopsided in the second half when the Tribe outgained the Wildcats, -. Senior quarterback R.J. Archer completed -of- passes for a career-high yards with one touchdown. The completions equaled a school record while the attempts established a new program mark. Additionally, the yards ranks as the th-best performance in school history. Villanova struck first on the contest s first play from scrimmage when quarterback Chris Whitney delivered a 7-yard touchdown strike to wideout Brandyn Harvey deep down the middle of the field on a flea flicker. VU added another touchdown early in the second quarter on a -yard run by Matt Szczur, while put its first points on the board midway through the quarter on a -yard field goal by Brian Pate. Sophomore running back Jonathan Grimes scored a pair of touchdowns and rushed for a game-high 9 yards on car-ries (. yards per carry). Highlighting his performance was a season-long -yard touchdown run in the third quarter that gave the Tribe its first lead of the contest.
