Delaware Blue Hens (2-1, 0-1 CAA) Game Day Information William and Mary Tribe (3-0, 0-0 CAA) vs. DELAWARE BLUE HENS (2-1, 0-1 CAA) - [FAMILY WEEKEND] Kickoff: 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 15, 2009 Site: Zable Stadium (12,259 FieldTurf Pro) Radio: 6:30 p.m. - Tribe Football Radio Network, including (See next page) All-Time Series: UD leads, Last Meeting: Oct. 18, 2008, W&M won, 27-3, in Newark, Del. Head Coaches: Jimmye Laycock ( /30th season); K.C. Keeler (58-35 at NSU/eighth season) First and 10 The fifth-ranked Tribe will look for its first 4-0 start since the 1994 season when it hosts conference foe Delaware in front of a sold-out crowd at Zable Stadium this Saturday at 7 p.m. W&M rattled off a perfect 3-0 mark during the non-conference portion of its schedule with wins against Virginia, Central Connecticut State and Norfolk State. While the Blue Hens leads the all-time series, 20-13, W&M earned a 27-3 victory at UD last season. The Tribe s defensive unit has been outstanding this season and has allowed just 43 points, which ranks as the second-fewest surrendered by a Tribe team through three games in the last 30 years. Additionally, the College is allowing just yards of total offense per game (82.7 rushing/157.7 passing), which ranks 15th nationally. Led by senior quarterback R.J. Archer, who threw three touchdown passes in the first half of last weekend s victory at NSU, the Tribe s offensive attack is averaging nearly 30 points a game. Delaware is off to a 2-1 start overall and a 1-1 mark in league action, with wins against West Chester and Delaware State and a one-point loss to top-ranked Richmond. Delaware s defense has been impressive this season and currently ranks ninth in the nation by allowing just 11 points per game. Individually, quarterback Pat Devlin, a transfer from Penn State, ranks third in the CAA with 207 passing yards per game Tribe Schedule Date Opponent Score/Time Sept. 5 at Virginia W, Sept. 12 CENTRAL CONNECTICUT STATE W, Sept. 19 at Norfolk State W, Sept. 26 DELAWARE* [Parent s Weekend] 7 p.m. Oct. 3 at Villanova* 3:30 p.m. Oct. 10 at Northeastern* 1 p.m. Oct. 24 JAMES MADISON* [Homecoming] Noon Oct. 31 at Rhode Island* 1 p.m. Nov. 7 TOWSON* 1:30 p.m. Nov. 14 NEW HAMPSHIRE* 1:30 p.m. Nov. 21 at Richmond* Noon *CAA conference game 2009 Blue Hens Schedule Date Opponent Score/Time Sept. 4 WEST CHESTER W, 35-0 Sept. 12 RICHMOND* L, Sept. 19 DELAWARE STATE W, Sept. 26 at William and Mary* 7 p.m. Oct. 3 at Maine* 6 p.m. Oct. 10 MASSACHUSETTS* 6 p.m. Oct. 17 at Towson* 3:30 p.m. Oct. 31 JAMES MADISON* Noon Nov. 7 HOFSTRA* Noon Nov. 14 at Navy 3:30 p.m. Nov. 21 at Villanova* 3:30 p.m. *CAA conference game Table of Contents Media Information W&M Football Radio Network W&M Sports Information Staff Projected Depth Chart and Start Chart This Week s Opponent: Delaware Tale of the Tape W&M Football Quick Facts W&M Football Game Notes The Tribe in CAA Football Information National Rankings Tribe Football Record Watch Opponent Schedules/Results Honor Roll W&M QB Club Players of the Week Senior Profile: C.J. Play-by-play chief Colley also covers the Tribe basketball squad. A mass communications graduate of Middle Tennessee State University, Colley has been a fixture of the Tribe s sports broadcasts for more than 20 years. In 2002, Colley was granted honorary alumnus status by William and Mary. Bob Sheeran has never drifted far from the beat of W&M sports. A 1967 graduate of the College, Sheeran served as W&M s sports information director for 16 years before entering private business in He has teamed up with Colley for the last 24 years as part of the football broadcasts and has also served as an integral part of all W&M Quarterback Club booster functions since his graduation. A testament to his dedication to the College was witnessed in 2003 as an endowment was organized in his name by HEYFARL (a W&M football booster organization) to provide scholarship support for a Tribe walk-on football player. Delaware Series Notes A Tribe Win vs. UD Would... Mark the Tribe s first 4-0 start since the 1994 season, which saw the College defeat URI, Delaware, Furman and VMI to start the season and eventually post an 8-3 overall mark. Stand as the College s second-straight win over Delaware, and mark the first time the College has beaten the Blue Hens in backto-back seasons since Last season, the Tribe handled the Hens in Newark, Improve the Tribe s record against Delaware to 8-10 in games played as league foes (since 1993). Snap a two-game home losing streak to Delaware. The Tribe lost the last encounter with UD in Williamsburg, 49-31, in what was the first official CAA game at the start of the 2007 season. The College s last home win over the Hens came in the 2004 National Semi-Finals, and saw the College rebound from a fourth-quarter deficit to collect a double overtime win. To find The Last Meeting NEWARK, Del. (10/18/08) -- For the second consecutive weekend, William and Mary spoiled its opponent s homecoming festivities as it earned a 27-3 victory at Delaware before a crowd of 21,949 at Delaware Stadium. Senior quarterback Jake Phillips completed 26-of-38 passes for 338 yards with a pair of touchdowns (one passing/one rushing). True freshman running back Jonathan Grimes was the contest s leading rusher and finished with 92 yards on 25 carries and a touchdown. Senior wide receiver Elliott Mack led the team with eight catches for 119 yards, while sophomore Chase Hill tallied seven catches for 105 yards with a touchdown. The Tribe defense was dominant and limited the Blue Hens to just 145 total yards and 12 first downs. Additionally, the effort snapped UD s 116 home game streak of scoring at least one touchdown. W&M held UD scoreless in the first half utilized a pair of Brian Pate field goals and a 1-yard touchdown run by Phillips to take a 13-0 lead at halftime. The College s defense was outstanding in the opening half, limiting the Blue Hens to just 62 total yards and five first downs. Additionally, UD registered just 11 yards passing. While neither team was able to put any points up in the third quarter, Delaware cut W&M s lead to 13-3 with a 32-yard field goal with 10:50 remaining. However, the Tribe answered with a touchdown on the ensuing possession when Phillips connected with Hill on a 44-yard scoring strike. W&M tacked on its final touchdown when Grimes scored on a two-yard run with 2:33 left in the contest. The touchdown capped off a nine-play, 93-yard drive that consumed 4:50. It was W&M s second drive of the afternoon that totaled more than 90 yards Final William and Mary Delaware Wide receiver Chase Hill totaled seven catches for 105 yards with a touchdown in last season s 27-3 victory at Delaware. 4 Game 4 No. 5 William & Mary vs. Delaware [Family Weekend] Sept. 26, p.m. Zable Stadium

Game Notes W&M s last regular season home win over the Blue Hens, one has to go back to 2002 (KC Keeler s first with the program) and the Tribe s win. Mark the first time since 2004 that the College opened its conference schedule with a win. The Tribe has been handed doubledigit losses in three of its last four conference lid lifters, including a setback last season to then 14th-ranked Villanova. Stand as the Tribe s fifth-straight home win under the lights at Zable The 2008 season marked the first year since permanent lights were installed at Zable Stadium that the College won all its night games (three) in a single season. Since the lights went up in 2005, the Tribe s regular-season home record in night contests is 6-4. Stand as the William and Mary program s 527th all-time win (vs. 510 losses and 41 ties). Move W&M Head Coach Jimmye Laycock s all-time record to and move his all-time conference mark to Big Interest Traditionally, the game between William and Mary and Delaware has always been a great draw in Williamsburg, with this year being no exception this Saturday s game is sold out. Perennial Powers Including this Saturday evening, of the 18 times the two teams have met as conference opponents since the College first started league play in 1993, one, or both, teams have been ranked a total of 15 times (one 5, both 10). Did You Know? Of the 17 previous meetings, the College has entered the game ranked higher than Delaware just four times (including Saturday s contest). The College is 2-1 in the previous three engagements as the higher ranked team, winning in 1996, 2004 (playoffs) and losing in Splitting Hairs Again, looking at the 17 meetings the two teams have had as conference opponents (since 1993), the College has averaged 26.5 points a contest, while Delaware has scored an average of 27.7 points a game. While the recent past (three games), have seen the victor prevail by double digit margins, the 11 games between 1996 and 2004 saw the outcome decided by a touchdown, or less, seven times. Big-Time Defenses Both W&M and Delaware enter this weekend s contest ranked among the top 20 nationally in scoring defense. The Blue Hens are currently ninth (11.0 ppg), while the Tribe is 19th (14.33 ppg). Protecting the Ball The Tribe and UD also rank among the nation s best in turnover margin, as W&M is currently 12th (1.67) in the country while Delaware is 20th (1.33). Tribe Advantage W&M s rushing defense currently ranks tied for 20th nationally, allowing just yards per game. Conversely, Delaware enters this weekend s game near the bottom of the CAA (10th) in rushing offense (122.0 ypg). Odds and Ends Assuming one could never have TOO much information on the last 17 games played between Delaware and William and Mary, I submit the following on the series between the two teams since 1993: William and Mary has averaged 391 yds/game in total offense, while Delaware has averaged 373. The College has averaged 35 pass attempts over the course of the series (588 to be exact). The Tribe has not attempted fewer than 20 in any game vs. Delaware in that span. In fact, one has to go back to 2001 to find the last time it attempted less than 30 in the series. Despite the 588 passing attempts, Tribe quarterbacks have yielded just 16 INTs (less than one a game), compared to 33 TD passes. The Tribe has thrown at least one TD pass vs. Delaware in 16 of the 17 previous meetings (with the only exception being the 1997 meeting). Delaware has run for 100, or more, yards against the Tribe 15 times (including more than 200 four times), while the Tribe has failed to run for over 100 five times. Both team s have scored at least one touchdown in each of the last 17 meetings, save one (Delaware last season was held to just a field goal, while the Hen s posted the only shut out in 1997). Jimmye Laycock is currently 3-5 against a KC Keeler coached Delaware squad. The last time William & Mary opened the CAA slate with a victory was during the 2004 season when they defeated a then 10th-ranked New Hampshire squad, 9-7, in the second game of the season. On the subject of conference openers, the College has averaged nearly nine wins (8.8) over the six seasons it has started the conference slate with a victory. W&M has never failed to win less than seven games in a season in which it started conference play with a victory. All four NCAA playoff appearances since 1993 have come in seasons that have started with a victory in conference play. Conversely, in the 10 seasons W&M has lost its conference opener, the Tribe has averaged fewer than six wins (5.2) and has never won more than a total of seven games in any of those seasons, although, one of those seven wins seasons came last year, as the Tribe fell in the CAA opener against 14th-ranked Villanova. Unlucky No. 4? While the sample set is admittedly small, the Tribe football program seems to have had a recent run of bad-luck with the season s fourth contest, having dropped the last three Game 4s on the schedule, including last season s loss to Villanova. Perhaps the streak of ill luck started in 2003, when Hurricane Isabel forced the cancellations of the fourth scheduled contest (Maine), then saw the Tribe lose against Delaware in the fourth game played that season. Lion s Den After facing talented Norfolk State wide receiver Chris Bell, a Penn State transfer, last weekend in its game with Norfolk State, the Tribe defense will again have to gear up again to face another former Nittany Lion in starting Delaware signal caller Pat Devlin. Devlin joined the Blue Hen program this summer as a junior and currently is third in the league in passing yards per game (207.0) and fifth in QB efficiency (138.8). While the College was able to contain Bell for most of the contest, he did finish the game with 66 yards on four catches, including a fourth-quarter touchdown grab. Did You Know? The College s last three wins over Delaware (2002, 2004 and 2008) were all fashioned with the Tribe starting a fifth-year senior at the quarterback position (David Corley, Jr., Lang Campbell and Jake Phillips, respectively). The Tribe s Win Over Norfolk State * Stands as the College s first 3-0 start since * Marks the team s fourth all-time win vs. Norfolk State, and second in as many years. The Tribe has played NSU three times in the Laycock era, with the first meeting coming in 1985 (a Tribe victory). Is the first win for the College in Norfolk, against a team from Norfolk, since Moved the team s record to 8-0 vs. teams currently in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Was the College s first road win as a top 10 team since the 2004 season (the Tribe was 0 for its last three in such contests). * Stands the College s 15th-consecutive win over a non-conference FCS opponent. The Tribe s last out-of-conference FCS loss came during the 2000 season, when the squad was handed a loss at then-8th-ranked Furman. Don t Blink The Tribe s win over Norfolk State took only 2:25 to complete, a full 20 minutes quicker than the Tribe s last game (vs. CCSU, which took 2:42). In comparison, the team s quickest game of the 2008 seasons was a 2:35 affair against the University of Delaware (a 27-3 Tribe win). It is the fastest completed game since at least the 2002 season, with the 2:27 win over Richmond to end the 2004 season being the next closest. What Could Have Been While the Tribe s defensive effort at Norfolk State was impressive, allowing just 216 total yards (39 rushing/177 passing), the stats were even more impressive until midway through the fourth quarter. In addition to holding NSU scoreless through three and a half quarters, W&M had surrendered jus t 131 yards of total offense (30 rushing/101 passing). Deja Vu Almost Senior safety David Caldwell found himself in a familiar position when he recovered a blocked field goal late in the first half at Norfolk State, as he also recovered a blocked field goal in the final minute of the first half against the Spartans last season. However, Caldwell returned the blocked kick 66 yards for a touchdown last season, while he was unable to duplicate that feat this year. Senior wide receiver D.J. McAulay totaled a game-high six catches for 74 yards with two touchdowns in the Tribe s victory at Norfolk State last weekend. Competing Against the Commonwealth After Saturday s win over Norfolk State, William and Mary has now amassed a 18-1 record against non-conference in-state foes during the last decade. Ten of those wins have come against VMI, while the Tribe has also defeated Liberty (four times), Norfolk State (twice), Virginia (once) and Hampton (once). The Tribe s lone loss during the span came at Virginia Tech in Game 4 No. 5 William & Mary vs. Delaware [Family Weekend] Sept. 26, p.m. Zable Stadium

Game Notes Team Notes In Control Certainly, the early returns on the Tribe offense shows the squad relying on a balanced attack that controls the clock, limits turnovers and creates positive field position for the team s outstanding defense. Through three games the team is possessing the ball an average of 33:41 per game, the top figure in the league. The team held the ball for a total of 37:15 vs. Norfolk State, the most for the squad since the 2005 season (40:57 in a 56-0 win over Liberty). So far, the Tribe has been over the 30-minute mark in two of its first three games (35:36 in win over Virginia). By comparison, last season saw the Tribe eclipse the 30 minute mark only three times in 11 games (all wins, vs. Towson, UNH and Delaware). Tradition Continued Historically, the Tribe offense is one of the most efficient squad s in the league in finishing drives and this season is no exception. Currently, the College is tied with Richmond as the most effective red zone offense in the conference, converting 10 of its 12 red zone chances into points (five TDs, five field goals). Untraditional Another Hallmark of the College has long been its disciplined play, as it annually is at, or near the top of the league in fewest penalty yards. Currently, though, the Tribe has been a little out of character, as it is averaging over 63 penalty yards a contest and ranks ninth of the 12 conference teams. By comparison, this weekend s opponent, Delaware, has only been nicked for an average of 30 yards a contest in flags. New Tradition One has to look back to the 1996 season to find the last Tribe defense to end the season as the league s top ranked unit. But, the 2009 squad is looking to position the College back on top again, going into the fourth game of the schedule, the Tribe currently has the league s second ranked unit, giving up an average of just yds/contest. Here it Comes The Tribe s game against Norfolk State marked its third-straight non-conference game to start the season. The Tribe will now go into league play for the remaining eight games. The only respite will be a bye week (Oct. 17). Poll Watching: With it s convincing win over Norfolk State University, the Tribe remained No. 5 in polls released by the FCS Coaches and the Sports Network this week. The Tribe was one of just five teams to receive a first-place vote the Sports Network Poll. The No. 5 ranking is the highest the College has been in the polls since it ended the 2004 season ranked third. The Tribe s highest ranking came during the 1997 season, when it entered the fourth week of play ranked No. 2, before losing a heart-breaking decision at New Hampshire (a game which saw the College lose a fumble in the game s waning seconds inside the Wildcat five-yard line). Hard Road Coming When matching the latest SportsNetwork top 25 poll to the team s future schedule, it shows that the College will be facing a total of four ranked teams. While that number alone is significant, what is possibly more impressive is the fact that three of those four ranked teams is currently ranked in the national top 10 (No. 1 Richmond, No. 3 Villanova and No. 6 James Madison). Each of those three squads also happens to be included with William and Mary in the Southern Division of the CAA Conference. The Tribe entered the 2009 campaign with a national ranking of 14th according in both the Sports Network and FCS Coaches polls. The Colonial Athletic Association was well represented in all of the preseason polls as well, as no fewer than six of the league s programs were ranked in any of the eight preseason polls. Additionally, four CAA teams garnered top-10 rankings in numerous polls. Talk About Tough Though it has already received a lot of attention, already, despite being ranked as high as 11th nationally in the preseason polls, the Tribe was still picked to finish fifth in the CAA Southern Division by the conference s coaches and media (behind Richmond, Villanova, James Madison and Delaware). Liberty Florida A&M 3-0 NR First Action Only a single player saw his first action against Norfolk State, as sophomore quarterback Terrance Schmand came into the game with 11:14 remaining in the fourth quarter to spell starting quarterback RJ Archer. He didn t attempt a pass, as the College was content to sit on its then-27-point lead. Offensive Notes Efficient Archer Tribe senior quarterback RJ Archer had what, statistically, could be his career s finest effort against Norfolk State, as he completed 15 of his 20 pass attempts for 153 yards and three touchdowns. For the third-straight week, he teamed with his offensive line to yield just a single sack. Overall, the offense had no turnovers while he was at the controls (for just over three quarters of action). By ending the game against the Spartans with a quarterback rating, Archer improved his season QB efficiency rating over 20 points (from ) to He currently sits sixth in the conference in the category. The three TD passes against Norfolk State were a career high for Archer, who had a career total of six TD passes coming into the game. The effort vs. the Spartans pushed his season total to six, which is the top figure in the conference. Quick Starter Archer efforts have been nothing short of amazing in the first halves of contests this season, as he has completed 35 of his 41 first half attempts for 420 yards and six TDs (vs. no INTs) for a ridiculous QB rating of Additionally, he has carried the ball 12 times for 83 yds and another TD. Against Norfolk State, Archer was especially sharp in the first half, as he connected on 11 of his 14 attempts for 121 yards and three scores. Overall, Archer has thrown for 466 yards (47 completions in 80 attempts), with just two interceptions. Does it All Archer enters Saturday s action with Delaware averaging yards of total offense a game. This figure ranks him eighth in the league. In terms of total offensive attempts (combination of passing and rushing attempts), Archer s 104 through three games ranks him second overall in the league (trailing only Hofstra s Cory Christopher s 12 0 total attempts). Currently, Archer s 114 rushing yards on the season is the second-highest total among league quarterbacks (trailing just Villanova s Chris Whitney 178). Some Facts Although Archer had made only one career start at quarterback coming into this season, against then 14th-ranked Villanova last fall, he did bring have a great deal of starting experience to the season, as he saw starting action in 22 games at the receiver position for the College during his redshirt freshman and sophomore seasons ( ). Tremendous Tailback Sophomore tailback Jonathan Grimes, the reigning CAA Rookie of the Year, led the Tribe in rushing for the 10thconsecutive game (dating back to last season) by posting 73 yards on 14 carries in the team s win at Norfolk State. Grimes ended the game with the Spartans having done most of his damage in the decisive first half (rushing 10 of his 14 total times before intermission). Also included in his evening was a pair of receptions, including a 10-yard touchdown catch and run in the first quarter, and two kick returns (for a total of 27 yards). Currently, Grimes is fourth in the league in rushing (averaging 66.3 yds/game) and eighth in all-purpose yards (with an average of yds/game). An all-around threat, with great speed, hands and quickness, one of the most impressive traits Grimes has displayed this season is his ability to shed would be tacklers. Did You Know? Grimes has now gone 187-straight rushing attempts without a fumble. His last turnover came in the second quarter of the Tribe s loss to Villanova. Taking it one step further, Grimes has touched the ball a total of 250 times (when including receptions, 38, and kick returns, 25) without committing a turnover. More over, no Tribe running back has lost a fumble since graduated senior tailback DeBrian Holmes had a miscue in the second quarter of the Tribe s win at Delaware last season (a total of nine games ago). Sharing the Load A season ago, Jonathan Grimes carried the heavy load at the tailback position for the College. Once he became the team s starter (in the fourth game vs. Villanova), he toted the ball nearly 58 percent of the time over the final seven games (143 of the team s 246 total carries over the remainder of the season). The percentage was even greater, when comparing him to the squad s remaining tailbacks that combined for just a total of 43 carries during that span. Much of the reason Grimes was given the opportunity for so much playing time was the rash of injuries the team sustained 8 Game 4 No. 5 William & Mary vs. Delaware [Family Weekend] Sept. 26, p.m. Zable Stadium

Game Notes at the position (as projected starters Courtland Marriner, DeBrian Holmes and Terrence Riggins) all missed playing time. But, 2009 has been a different story, as both Marriner and Riggins (both juniors) are healthy and pushing for reps. Through three games, Riggins is exactly half-way to his 2008 mark for attempts as he currently has run the ball 20 times for 107 yards, while last season he ended with 40 carries for 323 yards; Marriner is more than halfway to his 08 attempts mark as he has run 16 times for 101 yards, compared to just 29 attempts for 141 for all of last season. A good example of their increased roles have been shown the past two weeks, as the duo has combined for 164 yards on 27 attempts, including a 37-yard scoring dash from Marriner against CCSU. For the season, the Tribe s rushing attack has averaged a very respectable yds a contest and currently ranks third in the conference. While it is still early to compare, just for the sake of conversation, the last time the Tribe finished a season averaging more than 175 yds/game on the ground was during the 1999 season, which saw the squad post an average of yds/contest. McAulay s Magic Senior wide out DJ McAulay continued his solid play for the College, as he turned in a season-best six catch, 74-yard effort in the team s win over Norfolk State. Included in his performance was a pair of TD grabs of 13 and 30 yards, respectively. He currently is fourth in the league in both receptions (with an average of 4.7/game) and receiving yards (65.0 yds/game). His three TD catches on the season is tied for the second most in the league. Two games ago, in the team s win over CCSU, McAulay s skills were never better displayed, as he made a pair of spectacular grabs, the first sparking a Tribe TD drive and the second ending one. The former was a 48-yard downfield strike that saw him elevate in traffic and make a leaping fingertip grab, which placed the College on the Blue Devil 17-yard line (and set up a 17-yard TD pass on the next snap). The latter was an equally eye-catching leaping connection that saw him out-battle the CCSU corner to bring in a 21-yard TD spiral. He ended the game with three receptions for 70 yards. Did You Know? That McAulay s six catch effort extended his personal streak of games with at least one catch to 15 (all 11 games of last season and the first game of the 2007 campaign his last of that season). After sustaining a serious knee injury during the first game of the 2007 season, McAulay had a solid comeback in 2008 as he earned third-team All-CAA honors. He enters Saturday s contest needing 625 receiving yards and two TD receptions to enter the school s all-time top 10 in both categories (see career chart on page 10 of this release). The player he is looking to bump off the all-time list is Mike Tomlin, who currently sits in 10th-place with 2,054 careerreceiving yards. Streaking Another player who has pieced together a significant streak of games with at least one catch is returning senior all-conference tight end Rob Varno. He turned in a career-high five catches for 36 yards in the team s win over Norfolk State and extending his number of games with at least on grab to 15. For the season, Varno is second on the squad with nine catches for 83 yards and one score. Varno, a returning All-CAA performer, currently leads the leagues tight ends in receptions and is second in receiving yards. Defensive Notes Dominant Defense In addition to allowing just 14.3 points per game this season, the Tribe defensive unit is allowing just yards of total offense per game (82.7 rushing/157.7 passing), which ranks 15th nationally. The total yards defense also ranks second in the CAA (as does the pass defense, while the rushing defense is third in the league). Among the Best By allowing just 43 points through the opening three games, this year s defensive unit has allowed the second-fewest points by a Tribe team in the last 30 years. Only the 1998 team allowed fewer through the first three contests (34). Shutting Down the Ground Game The Tribe defense has been stout against the opponents rushing attacks this season and is allowing just 2.5 yards per carry. W&M last held the opposition to fewer than 3.0 yards per carry in 1996 when opponents averaged just 2.1 yards per rush. Second Half Dominance Although the Tribe defensive unit s second half scoreless streak was snapped late in the fourth quarter at Norfolk State, the group has still posted impressive stats following halftime this season. In addition to allowing just 5.0 points per game after the break, W&M is surrendering just 4.7 first downs (UVA-4, CCSU-6, NSU-4) and just 12.7 yards rushing (UVA-19, CCSU-14, NSU-5). Additionally, the Tribe has allowed an average of just 96.7 yards of total offense per game after halftime (UVA-79, CCSU-127, NSU-84) Honor Roll Adrian Tracy Preseason Buck Buchanan Award Watch List College Sporting News Preseason All-American The Sports Network Preseason All-American Phil Steele Magazine Preseason All-American Preseason CAA Co-Defensive Player of the Year Preseason All-CAA Team Phil Steele Magazine Preseason All-CAA Team Jonathan Grimes College Sporting News Preseason All-American Preseason All-CAA Team Phil Steele Magazine Preseason All-CAA Team Brian Pate College Sporting News Preseason All-American The Sports Network Preseason All-American Preseason All-CAA Team Phil Steele Magazine Preseason All-CAA Team David Miller College Sporting News Preseason All-American Preseason All-CAA Team Phil Steele Magazine Preseason All-CAA Team C.J. Only the 2006 team allowed fewer points (12) through the first three games Score One for the Defense In addition to shutting down opposing team s offenses this season, the Tribe defensive unit has also provided some points of its own. Redshirt freshman cornerback B.W. Webb returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown in the season opener at Virginia, while the Tribe recorded a safety in the win against CCSU. The safety versus the Blue Devils marked the first time the College had recorded a safety since doing so against Villanova on Nov. 6, The Tribe defense also helped set up short touchdown-scoring drive for the offense at Norfolk State when Jake Trantin recorded an interception at the Spartan s 32-yard line. Nationally Ranked Turnover Margin Through the opening three weeks, the Tribe currently ranks tied for 12th nationally with a turnover margin per game (+5 total). W&M has forced its opponents into nine turnovers (five fumbles gained/four interceptions gained) while committing just four. The Sticks are Staying Put After allowing just 17.5 first downs per game last season, the Tribe is off to another great start this season -- surrendering just 12.7 per game. W&M allowed just 12 first downs against Virginia and Norfolk State, while CCSU managed just 14. Last fall, W&M opened its season with an impressive performance when it held N.C. State to just 11 first downs. The Tribe nearly equaled that feat on three occasions last year by allowing 12 against Delaware, Towson and Richmond. The performance against the Wolfpack was the program s best since surrendering just seven first downs against Liberty on Sept. 24, No Signs of a Sophomore Slump After making a significant impact for the Tribe as one of the CAA s top freshmen last season, linebacker Jake Trantin is off to a great start this season. The Severn, Md., native currently leads the team with 24 tackles, while he has also registered 3.5 tackles for a loss, a sack, an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Trantin currently ranks ninth in the conference with 8.0 tackles per game. Fantastic Freshman Redshirt freshman cornerback B.W. Webb currently leads the conference and ranks tied for third nationally with 1.5 interceptions per game. All three of Webb s interceptions this season came in the season-opening victory at Virginia. Special Teams Notes Excellent Punt Coverage The Tribe s punt coverage has been outstanding this season, as it currently leads the conference and ranks 13th nationally with a net punting average of Junior punter David Miller has played a key role, as he currently ranks third in the league with an average of 41.9 yards per punt. Big Returns Redshirt freshman B.W. Webb has established himself as one of the nation s top punt retuners this season, as he currently leads the CAA and ranks 16th nationally with 11.7 yards per return. His longest return of the season was a 42-yard scamper in the win against CCSU. Born to Run While junior punter David Miller did not attempt any punts in the win at Norfolk State (marking just the second time in the last four seasons W&M has not punted in a game), he did come up with a big first down on a fake punt. Facing a fourth-and-two on W&M s own 21-yard line, Miller kept the scoring drive alive when he lined up to punt but instead raced 12 yards down the right sideline to pick up a first down. 10 Game 4 No. 5 William & Mary vs. Delaware [Family Weekend] Sept. 26, p.m. Zable Stadium

Game Notes Pate in the National Rankings Senior place-kicker Brian Pate currently leads the CAA and ranks tied for third in the nation with 2.33 field goals made per game. He established a school record in the win at Virginia when he connected on four field goals. With 29 career field goals, he ranks sixth on the College s all-time list. Fred Johnson Honored as W&M QB Club Special Teams Player of the Week Senior Fred Johnson made a significant impact on special teams coverage in the win against Norfolk State, as he totaled three solo tackles. He was honored for the performance by being selected as the W&M QB Club Special Teams Player of the Week. In Case You Missed It Record Setting By ending the game against Central Connecticut State with 80 yards (on 19 attempts), Jonathan Grimes has pushed his career-rushing total over the 1,000 yard mark (1,055). Grimes surpassed the 1000-yard mark in just 13 career games, making him the fastest player to the milestone in school history. By comparison, Derek Fitzgerald, the Tribe s all-time leading rusher (3,744 career yards amassed between the seasons), took 15 career starts to hit the milestone. Among the Tribe s top 10 performers on the career-rushing list, Fitzgerald 15-game total is tied with Jon Smith ( ) for the quickest to 1,000 career rushing yards. Did You Know? One has to go back to the 2004 season to find the last time a Tribe quarterback rushed for more yards than the 63 Archer posted in the Tribe s win over Central Connecticut State (Sept. 12), when eventual Payton Award winning signal caller Lang Campbell slashed the Hampton University defense for 71 yards (on nine attempts) in the opening round of the NCAA Playoffs (a Tribe win). We ve Got That Covered The Tribe defense did not allow a passing touchdown during hte first two games this season, marking the first time since 2001 that W&M had not surrendered a score through the air in the opening two contests. W&M almost extended the streak to three games, but Norfolk State recorded a pair of touchdown passes in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter. All-America Showing After earning a number of preseason All-America accolades and being selected to the Buchanan Award Watch List, senior defensive end Adrian Tracy opened the 2009 impressivley. After totaling nine tackles, seven of which were solo, at Virginia, he accounted for eight tackles, a forced fumble, a PBU and a QB hurry versus CCSU. Evan Everywhere While linebacker Evan Francks has been a part-time starter during each of the past two seasons, he solidified his starting role during the first few games this season. After opening the 09 campaign with two tackles for a loss and a pair of fumble recoveries at Virginia, he totaled nine tackles and a sack against CCSU. Not to be Overlooked While senior All-America defensive end Adrian Tracy receives much of the attention among the Tribe s defensive linemen, fellow seniors C.J. Herbert and Sean Lissemore both recorded impressive starts to the 09 season. In addition to coming up with a huge TFL on a fourth-and-one at midfield during the fourth quarter in the season-opening win at Virginia, he followed that effort with five tackles and 0.5 TFL against CCSU. Herbert also applied consistent pressure against UVA s quarterbacks in the opener before being selected as the W&M QB Club Defensive Player of the Week following his performance against CCSU. Herbert earned the honor after totaling four tackles, as well as a sack and a forced fumble that resulted in a safety. Webb Honored as CAA Special Teams Player of the Week A week after garnering numerous national player of the week honors for his performance in the season-opening win at Virginia, freshman cornerback B.W. Webb was selected as the CAA Special Teams Player of the Week following the victory against CCSU. Webb returned three punts for 89 yards (29.7 yds per return) against the Blue Devils, including a long of 42 yards early in the fourth quarter. He also registered a 32-yard return late in the third quarter. Pate Ties School Record Preseason All-American place-kicker Brian Pate played a key role in the Tribe s win at Virginia, as he equaled a school record with four made field goals. The Fredericksburg, Va., native connected on his attempts from 40, 26, 24 and 20 yards. Pate was already the program s singlegame record holder for made extra points with nine, which he established against VMI in NFL Spotlight Tribe Defense at the Next Level A pair of former Tribe defensive backs had impressive performances during the opening weekend of the 09 NFL season. Making his first career start, Jacksonville Jaguars rookie cornerback Derek Cox 09 recorded an interception and a fumble recovery to go with three tackles in his pro debut against the Indianapolis Colts. His pick came in the end zone against all-pro Peyton Manning, as he thwarted the Colts scoring opportunity on the game s opening series. His fumble recovery also ended the Colts drive in Jaguar territory on their next offensive series. Four-time Pro Bowl selection Darren Sharper 97 also had a big weekend, as he recorded a pair of picks (which he returned 79 yards) to help the New Orleans Saints defeat the Detroit Lions. Preseason Honors Tribe players garnered a bevy of preseason accolades this summer, as five W&M standouts earned All-America honors from various organizations. Preseason Buchanan Award Watch List honoree Adrian Tracy highlighted the list with three All-America nods (College Sporting News, The Sports Network, Phil Steele Magazine), while senior place-kicker Brian Pate earned the distinction from a pair of outlets (CSN and SN). Sophomore running back Jonathan Grimes, senior safety David Caldwell and junior punter David Miller were also selected to All-America teams. A complete list of the Tribe s preseason honors can be found on page 9. Stability at the Top Much of the Tribe s success during the past three decades can be directly attributed to the stability of the coaching staff. Head Coach Jimmye Laycock enters his 30th season at the helm of the W&M program and has guided it to a record. He currently owns the fourthlongest tenure at one school in the nation, trailing only Joe Paterno (44), Bob Ford (37) and Bobby Bowden (34). Additionally, his 190 victories ranks sixth among all active FCS coaches. Offensive coordinator Zbig Kepa has also been a constant on W&M s sidelines for much of the past three decades, as he enters his 26th season with the College. In addition to the continuity at the top, the Tribe returns its entire coaching staff from last season. A Homecoming Tribe senior quarterback R.J. Archer certainly looked every bit the part of a seasoned veteran at the controls of the Tribe offense. Despite having just one career start at quarterback to his credit and playing in front of 55,000-plus fans in what is essentially his hometown, Archer turned in a game for the ages in leading the College to the upset at Virginia. He lead the team in rushing, with 46 yards on nine attempts and finished the game with 184 passing yards (completing 23 passes in 44 attempts). He engineered a seven-play, 81-yard scoring drive in the first quarter that was capped when he threw a dart on the run to TE Rob Varno for a five-yard score. All of this was impressive against a well regarded Virginia defense, but what was perhaps most impressive about his performance were the things he didn t do, namely throw interceptions (just one, late in the third quarter) or take drive stalling sacks (giving up just one for a loss of four yards). His composure in the pocket allowed him to see the entire field and use all the weapons in the Tribe s offense, as he completed passes to seven different receivers (four different WR, a pair of backs and a TE). When forced out of the pocket, he was equally relaxed and made solid decisions on when to attempt to extend a play down field, or when to tuck and run. His work allowed the College to chew up over 34 crucial minutes of game clock and kept the team on the plus side of the field position game for the majority of the afternoon. Did You Know? The College s 1986 win over the Cavaliers also featured a senior quarterback who was in his first season as the starting quarterback (Ken Lambiotte). Lambiotte threw for 307 yards and Game 4 No. 5 William & Mary vs. Delaware [Family Weekend] Sept. 26, p.m. Zable Stadium 11

Game Notes accounted for five touchdowns in the victory en route to being honored as Sports Illustrated Offensive Player of the Week. Like Archer, Lambiotte had some Charlottesville roots, as he started his athletic career at the University of Virginia before transferring to William and Mary prior to the 1985 season. High Achiever Tribe alumnus Mike Tomlin 95 guided the Pittsburgh Steelers to the XLIII Super Bowl Title last season, leading his charges to a win over the Arizona Cardinals. Tomlin joins a host of former Tribe players in the NFL ranks, which includes current players in Pro Bowl safety Darren Sharper (New Orleans Saints), long-snapper Mike Leach (Arizona Cardinals) and 2009 third-round selection, cornerback Derek Cox (Jacksonville Jaguars). Tomlin isn t the first Tribe graduate to lead an NFL squad, as Dan Henning 64 had two head coaching stints (Atlanta Falcons, /San Diego Chargers, ). Currently, Henning is the offensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins. Tomlin also isn t the first coach with strong ties to Williamsburg to lead a squad to the Super Bowl, as former William and Mary mentor Marv Levy ( ) led the Buffalo Bills to four Super Sundays in his Hall of Fame NFL Coaching career. Interestingly, one of Tomlin s contemporaries from his playing days with the College, Sean McDermott 97, was recently promoted to defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles. Tribal Tidbit The last time a Tribe quarterback entered his first full season as a starter as a senior was in 1995, when Matt Byrne took over the reigns of a Tribe offense having started just two games in his career to that point. Both of his career starts prior to the 95 season came during in 1994, when he subbed for injured then-starter Shawn Knight. Coincidently, William and Mary also opened the 1995 campaign in Scott Stadium (a game that stands as the Tribe s last visit to Charlottesville). Pick-Sixes B.W. Webb s pick-six in the triumph at Virginia marked the second consecutive season in which a Tribe players has returned an interception for a touchdown in the season opener. In the 08 opener at N.C. State, Derek Cox, who now plays for the Jacksonville Jaguars, returned an interception 45 yards for a score. Last season, W&M found the end zone three times via pick-sixes, as Cox also returned an interception for a touchdown versus Northeastern, while David Caldwell did so against Rhode Island. Webb s performance also marked the first time a Tribe player recorded a multipleinterception game since Ben Cottingham accomplished the feat at Richmond in Shutting Down the Cavaliers In addition to causing seven turnovers in the win at Virginia, the Tribe s defensive unit held the Cavaliers to just 268 yards of total offense (just 137 passing). Additionally, W&M limited UVA to just 12 first downs and dominated the time of possession by more than 11 minutes (35:36-24:24). The College s effort was especially impressive in the second half, as it held the Cavaliers scoreless and allowed just 79 yards and four first downs. Third Down Stops After allowing just 54 third-down conversions on 156 opportunities (35 percent) last season, the Tribe picked up right where it left off from a year ago in the season opener at Virginia, allowing just five conversions on 17 chances. Strong Leg Preseason All-American punter David Miller got the 2009 campaign off to a good start by averaging 44.4 yards per punt (on eight punts) in the win at Virginia. Miller also pinned the Cavaliers inside the 20 on a pair of occasions. Last season, he was a third-team all-conference selection after averaging 41.5 yards per punt. Everyone s All-American After earning All-America honors from the College Sporting News and the Sports Network last season, senior captain defensive end Adrian Tracy piled up a number of preseason accolades this year. In addition to earning All-America distinction from the College Sporting News, Sports Network and Phil Steele s magazine, Tracy was selected as the CAA Preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year and chosen to the Buchanan Award watch list. In addition to ranking sixth nationally with 0.91 sacks per game in 2008, Tracy led the league with 1.41 tackles for a loss per game, which ranked 20th nationally. The Sterling, Va., native also ranked second in the CAA among defensive linemen with 6.5 tackles per game and finished the year with 72 tackles, 15.5 tackles for a loss, 10.0 sacks and one blocked kick. Fantastic Front Four The Tribe defensive unit will be anchored by one of the most talented and experienced defensive lines in the nation this season. All-American, Buchanan Award watch list honoree and Preseason CAA Co-Defensive Player of the Year Adrian Tracy leads the group, while seniors C.J. Herbert and Sean Lissemore entered the fall with 32 and 21 career starts to their credit, respectively. Sophomore Harold Robertson III also earned starts in all 11 games last season. In addition to Tracy s long list of preseason accolades, Lissemore and Herbert both garnered preseason all-conference distinction from Phil Steele s magazine. Sack em One of the Tribe s five captains this season, Tracy has been a fixture in the starting lineup throughout his career and entered the year with 33 starts. During that time he piled up 19.0 career sacks and entered the 2009 campaign ranked tied for second in the nation among all active FCS players. New Look at the Linebacker Position With the graduation of multi-year starting linebackers Josh Rutter and Michael Pigram, the Tribe linebacking corps entered the season with a new look. Sophomore Jake Trantin, a returning starter from last season, anchors the unit in the middle and is joined by juniors Evan Francks and Wes Steinman. Franks earned five starts last season, four of which came when Rutter was out with an injury, and finished 2008 with 47 tackles, 2.0 TFL, an interception and a recovered fumble. Steinman returns to the mix this season and earned a starting spot after missing nearly all of last season with an injury sustained in the season opener at N.C. State. Unheralded Star Although senior captain strong safety David Caldwell has led the Tribe in tackles during each of the last two seasons, he is yet to garner any all-conference honors. That fact is startling when considering he recorded 107 tackles as a sophomore and ranked fifth among the league s defensive backs with 7.1 tackles per games last year. Caldwell also accounted for a pair of touchdowns last fall, as he found the end zone with an interception return against Rhode Island and returned a blocked field goal versus Norfolk State. Some are beginning to take notice, however, as he was chosen as a preseason All-American by the College Sporting News. Going to the Next Level After establishing himself as one of the best cornerbacks in the program s history, Derek Cox became the Tribe s second-highest NFL draft pick when he was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the third round with the 73rd overall pick. Cox joins Darren Sharper (New Orleans Saints) and Mike Leach (Arizona Cardinals) as W&M alumni on active NFL rosters. Much Improved With the return of nine starters from the 2007 defensive unit, the Tribe entered last season looking to improve upon its performance from the previous year when it allowed nearly 400 yards of total offense per game (225.7 rushing/167.5 passing). W&M was successful as it dramatically improved upon those numbers, allowing just yards per game (155.2 rushing/171.6 passing). The pass defense ranked third in the conference and 24th in the nation. In addition to limiting opponents yardage, the Tribe also dramatically reduced the number of points it allowed compared to the previous season. While the 07 team surrendered a schoolrecord 38.8 points per game, last year s squad allowed just 24.0 points per game. Adding Up Tackles For a Loss The 2008 edition of the Tribe was exceptional at making stops behind the line of scrimmage, as it ranked second in the conference with 6.55 tackles for a loss per game. W&M s best effort came in the win at Delaware when it piled up 11.0 TFL for a loss of 56 yards. The Tribe finished last season with 72 TFL for 283 yards (6.5/25.7 ypg), which marked a significant improvement from the previous year s totals of 49 TFL for 178 yards (4.5/16.2 ypg). 12 Game 4 No. 5 William & Mary vs. Delaware [Family Weekend] Sept. 26, p.m. Zable Stadium

Game Notes Sacking the Opposition The Tribe increased sack total significantly in 2008, recording 24 sacks for a loss of 144 yards. The impressive totals represented a big improvement from the previous season when it totaled 10 sacks for a loss of 60 yards. Scoring with Defense and Special Teams While the Tribe boasted a potent offense last season, the squad s defensive and special teams units also put up a number of points -- scoring seven touchdowns. Cornerback/punt returner Derek Cox accounted for four of those scores, as he returned interceptions for touchdowns against N.C. State and Northeastern while also taking punts back for scores versus Northeastern (89 yards) and Richmond (80 yards). Safety David Caldwell returned an interception 62 yards for a score against Rhode Island, while he returned a blocked field goal 66 yards for a score versus Norfolk State. Running back Jonathan Grimes found the end zone with a 97-yard kickoff return against Villanova. The Tribe s three pick-sixes set a single-season school record during the Laycock Era. Lissemore Finishes Strong Defensive end Sean Lissemore entered this season looking to pick up where he left off last season, as the Dumont, N.J., native recorded at least one tackle for a loss in each of the final four games in Early Stops While the first quarter proved to be the Tribe s worst quarter defensively during the 07 season (allowing 12.5 points per game), W&M s defensive unit was very impressive during the initial 15 minutes of action last fall, allowing just 5.3 points per game. Additionally, the Tribe held three opponents scoreless in the opening quarter (VMI, Delaware and Towson), while only New Hampshire scored more than a touchdown. Sharing the Load While the Tribe s total of 16 interceptions was significant in 08, perhaps even more impressive is the fact that a school-record-tying 10 different players tallied at least one (the 1990 and 1993 squads also had 10 players with at least one pick). Pate Garners Preseason All-America Honors After garnering first-team all-league honors as a junior last season, place-kicker Brian Pate earned preseason All-America distinction from the College Sporting News and Sports Network this fall. Additionally, he was named to the preseason All-CAA team and received preseason firstteam all-league accolades from Phil Steele s magazine. Last season, Pate connected on 13-of-16 field goal attempts, including 3-of-4 from beyond 40 yards, and converted all 41 of his extra-point opportunities. The Fredericksburg, Va., native also led the team and ranked second in the conference with 7.3 points per game. Additionally, his average of 1.18 field goals per game led the league and ranked tied for 17th nationally. Pate also excelled in the classroom and earned a spot on the CAA All-Academic Team. Preseason Honors Roll in for Miller After earning third-team all-conference honors last season, punter David Miller was chosen as a preseason All-American by the College Sporting News. Additionally, the Centreville, Va., native was also selected to the preseason All-CAA team and garnered first-team all-league status from Phil Steele s magazine. In 2008, Miller ranked 16th nationally in punting with yards per kick. Additionally, he pinned the opposition inside the 20-yard line 12 times, while eight of his punts were longer than 50 yards. Big Returns Jonathan Grimes established himself as one of the nation s top kickoff returners last season. The first-team All-CAA returner also earned All-America honors from the Sports Network as a special teams player. Grimes averaged a league-best 24.5 yards per return, with a season-long of 97 yards (for a touchdown) against Villanova. 17 Senior Profile: C.J. Herbert Q: What is your full name? A: Cortenous Quincy Herbert Jr. #6 C.J. Herbert Senior Defensive Line Germantown, Md. Northwest Q: Where are you from? A: Germantown, Maryland. My family has a long history in Germantown. My grandparents were very lucky to settle down near where they were raised. They were both raised on farms in that area; Clarksburg and Germantown. They were just a model couple. They raised us on Blackrock Road in Germantown, Maryland. It s just always had that good feeling of home and family. Q: Is it a rural area? A: I guess so. It s pretty close to a rural area. It s become more industrialized now; there are more businesses there popping up all over the place. Every time I come home there seems to be a new road that I haven t yet driven. Q: Did you grow up on a farm? A: No. I was with my [parents] in apartment complexes in Germantown and in the suburbs of D.C. But, there was Grandma s house, which was a staple, it had more land and was a old fashion built house. I always had a good time playing in the yard and hanging out with friends in the community. I enjoyed going to church in that community. It was like an old-fashion good base. Actually it was a lot of family that lived in that area on that road. It was my Grandma s house and up the street was my Aunt and Uncle s house and then another Aunt and Uncle s house. Q: What high school did you go to? A: Northwest High School Q: Were you a part of any non-athletic club or activity in high school? A: Not really. I went to church every Sunday. I was the youth in church and had a job working in the church, like the usher or similar duties. I guess that was my out of school activity. Q: How many other schools did you consider in the recruiting process? A: Probably about five. It was JMU, Naval Academy, Villanova, and Richmond. Q: What made the decision for you to come to William and Mary? A: I definitely wanted to go to a football town. I wanted to go somewhere football was important; that had that tradition and that support; the football atmosphere and the support from the community and the support from the students. I appreciate that everyday, we have a great staff here and they really appreciate you as a football player. They understand you re also a student and are aware of the challenges of a William and Mary classroom. In high school I knew I wanted to go to a good school and wanted to really apply myself. I wanted to do something creative with my life, like help people and work hard and have a strong meaning for my life. I want to be able to look back and say I took a road that was kind of difficult and I made the most of it. Q: How have you done that here? A: I am grateful that I m here and acting like it. This place is all about making smart decisions. Paying attention to small things that made me successful when I was younger and not forgetting those things or taking them for granted. I ve worked very hard at my studies and also took advantage of the opportunity to get to know my teachers. Taking it a step further, football has allowed me to also get to know prominent figures in the community. Having this opportunity has shown me there are a great number of nice, loving and supportive people in and around this program. Coming in, I just wanted to make the most of my time. I didn t ever want to look back and say I wish I would have done that or I wish I could have done that better. Q: Outside of your interaction with your teammates, what would you say is the best part about being a William and Mary football player? A: I would say just taking advantage of the school. Being a member of the William and Mary community is a great opportunity in general. You learn from the teachers and from the other students in your classes. I really appreciate that opportunity and try to take advantage of it. Q: What is one thing about your college experience that has surprised you? A: I m kind of a serious person, I take things seriously. I try really hard to have high expectations of myself and it really feels good and you know you re at a good place and around good supportive people when people are so easy to forgive you and welcome you back and to help you, instead of ostracize your or keep you down or keep you away from the goals that you ve set. People have always been there for me when I ve tried my hardest and I really appreciate the fact that this program and campus embrace the efforts. Q: What does it mean to you and your fellow senior defensive line mates Adrian Tracy and Sean Lissamore to have essentially played every game together since your freshman year? A: It s almost unreal the way we ve been given the opportunity and the way we ve been together, it s just wonderful. Those guys are amazing athletes and amazing players and great teammates. Being on this D-line, it s like everyday it s the best situation. I couldn t ask for a better situation. We have had some bumps and bruises in our earlier years but now that we re older and we ve learned from those mistakes and those down times. We can really smooth out those rough parts of our game and just cheat off each others energy and play together. 18 Senior Profile: C.J. Herbert Q: What is the benefit of the trio of you having played together during all of these games? A: There are not going to run the ball on us. That s the first thing that comes to mind. I mean, I know on every play that Adrian and Sean are just destroying somebody and I m doing my job and I m like man if they re going to be in the backfield I m going to be in the backfield with them. If they re going to party at the quarterback I m just trying not to be late for the party. Q: Adrian was named the pre-season defensive player of the year, do you think all the attention that moniker is likely to get him is going to help you in lining up opposite of him? A: First, I think it is pretty cool for him to be recognized. But, I also know for him to have the success he is predicted to have we all are going to need to play well. He s a great athlete. He looks wonderful doing his technique. I hope he garners a little bit of extra attention and gets some double teams and I m left facing a single lineman; that d be cool, but I just know we need to come together and play well together and everything else will fall into place and take care of itself. Q: With the three of you being seniors, how much extra motivation is there for you to take advantage of what is likely the last chance you have to all play together? A: I feel kind of like a hypocrite when I say everyone s going like it s their last season, because it is my, but I do feel like there s a chemistry and a bond that the entire team has, even with the younger guys. Everyone is going in like it s their last season. It is actually a great feeling, especially when you are a senior. I m like, Yes! Wonderful, thank you guys so much for giving us so much! Q: What is one thing about you that someone might not know right away? A: I m pretty bland; pretty rounded off. I m not too edgy. I don t really have anything that sticks out really. What I am, more than anything else is a thinker. I think before I go to sleep, I think when I wake up and when I m driving and I just want to be the best person I can be everyday. There are so many slogans for football I want to apply to my everyday life, like you never stay the same, you only get better or worse. I just want to be a better person tomorrow and not just for me, but for the world. Just to increase positive nature in the world. Q: If you could sit down with one freshman and give him one piece of advise that you knew he d listen to, what would it be? A: I would just tell the person to be patient and continue doing the things that brought you to this point in life. Just continue to have those values and guideline and not rush to get old and rush to get in relationships. Just be patient and take care of school and take care of football and accomplish those little daily goals. Take it one day at a time. Q: What s your major? A: Economics Q: What is your dream job? A: I want to go to law school. I don t really have a dream job. Q: What has been your favorite class at William and Mary? A: I don t know, probably Spanish. I m really into Spanish right now. Q: How much can you speak? A: Not much, but I m in there. I m doing my thing. Q: What is your best non-athletic skill? A: I m a pretty good salesman. I work at foot locker and I can sell some shoes. But I have such a heart and I don t really want to do anything that you can t afford or wrong for you. But if you re trying to buy some shoes and have the money, I will sell you some shoes. Q: What is the last thing you made from scratch? A: Actually, my grandfather and I recently made a playground from scratch. We just went and got wood from Lowes and made swings and a slide. It s in my grandfather s backyard. My grandmother runs a daycare. We were mixing cement and digging holes. I m not the handiest of men but I can get the job done. Q: What is one way you ve done that in the recent past? A: I went to Nicaragua for spring break with the Williamsburg Chapel. It was amazing. We stayed at an orphanage and we built a wall to stop runoff from flooding the orphanage. We visited with townspeople and raised a lot of money for the orphanage, over $28,000, and it was a wonderful experience. Q: What did you get out of the trip? A: I learned a lot about the world and a lot about the United States that I didn t know. I had never been out of the country and there are a lot of freedoms that we as United States citizens have that we take for granted everyday. When your eyes are opened like that you got to start somewhere and start making those changes because we have to be grateful for what we have here in America. 18 Game 4 No. 5 William & Mary vs. Delaware [Family Weekend] Sept. 26, p.m. Zable Stadium

Head Coach Jimmye Laycock William and Mary Head Coach Jimmye Laycock 30th Season Career Record: (.581) Comments From Monday s CAA Football Coaches Conference Call: Q: Talk a little about the Norfolk State game and what you saw out of your team. A: I was very pleased with the way we started the game. Going in down there we didn t know what to expect, and they were going to be fired up and ready to play. It was the first time we ve ever played down there, so that was a big thing. I thought our guys came out and set the tone right away defensively with the big stop, and then we took it and drove down and scored. We got the turnover (Jake Trantin interception) and then went down and scored again from that time on we controlled the ballgame. I was upset with some of the late scores, but they ve got some fine athletes and I give them credit because they kept playing. Maybe we didn t play as well as we should have in the fourth quarter, but it was a good solid win for us. Q: Can you talk about your decision to play R.J. Archer at wide receiver even though he was recruited as a quarterback, and then to move him back to the quarterback position? A: Obviously, we recruited him out of high school as a quarterback. One of the things we really liked about him in the recruiting process, and why we went after him, was his athletic ability. We felt like he was a very good all-around athlete and we saw that when he arrived on campus. We had some other quarterbacks that had a little more experience and we wanted to get R.J. on the field, so he made the switch to receiver. Then we talked to him about coming back to the quarterback position in a backup role. He made the decision to do that, and it really helped him. He got to play some and he has worked hard at it and is becoming a good quarterback. He is a very smart, very solid individual, and I feel like a very good quarterback. He s playing very well for us right now. Q: I guess it s safe to say he hasn t taken the normal route to being a Jimmye Laycock quarterback has he? A: Well, we ve had other ones; we ve had other ones in the past. That s another thing about being here, we ve got a lot of past. We ve had other ones who have caught a touchdown pass before they ve thrown one, and there s nothing wrong with that. He understands the game; he understands how to play and his time as receiver helped in that regard. He s a very poised, very solid quarterback. Q: Please talk about Adrian Tracy s play and what he brings to your defense on a consistent, steady basis. A: Well Adrian s a very good player for us right now as a senior; there is no doubt about that. He s a good player who works hard, and our coaches have helped him develop and understand how to play down after down. He has become very consistent and also has learned leadership. He has set an example and, he s a heck of a player and a fine young man. Q: Besides the wins, what have you accomplished these first three weeks? A: I think we have developed an ability to play very well at times. I still don t think we ve gotten the consistency that we re going to need as we get into league play, but I think our seniors have stepped up and shown some of the younger guys what s necessary; they ve shown how to prepare and practice and how to prepare mentally. We ve done a very good job with that. Right now I think our effort has been good and we ve played hard. I d just like to see us more consistent with the way we re playing. Q: Do you hold anything back and not show stuff until league play starts, or have we seen it all? A: I don t think we try to hold things back. I wish I had something to hold back. Maybe I want people to keep thinking I have something in my back pocket. Obviously in the Virginia game we went in with everything we thought we needed to do to put ourselves in a situation to win that game, and we did. We were able to win that and Central Connecticut and Norfolk State. We just get ready each week and try to play our game each week. Q: Since you re still breaking in a new quarterback, are there still installation processes to go through? A: We ve changed things weekly; we change things here and there. R.J. is a new quarterback in that sense, but he s been in our program so it s not the same as adding something or changing something with a totally new quarterback. He can grasp it well. I don t have a problem with R.J. handling anything with our offense. Q: Please talk a little about how tough the league is, specifically the South Division. A: Well, I think it s pretty obvious when you look at scores and other games. We ve been here before. It s a challenge every week, so we better get ready. I think our players are aware of that and it starts this weekend with Delaware. We know the rivalry we have with Delaware, and we know how great a program they have up there. They have a great tradition, and we know we need to step it up. Hopefully our players will work on it this week. Q: Looking back at the Norfolk State game, do you game plan to hold onto the ball, take long drives, and keep their defense on the field? A: Well I think in that ball game I probably did; I probably did want to do that a little bit. You want to see how well you can execute play after play. Obviously you like to have big plays at times, but also you ve got to work at executing and coming up with first downs and controlling the ball. It s something that you need to be aware of, and I thought we did a pretty good job of that the other night. Q: Talk about the defense as a whole through the first three games. A: We ve played very well at times defensively; there s no question about that. But there have been some times where we haven t been as good as we d like to be, not as consistently good as we d like to be. And again, a situation like the other night in the fourth quarter, we gave up a couple of scores late, which we don t like to do. But I think the front four Sean Lissemore, Adrian Tracy, C.J. Herbert, Michael Stover have played well. So has linebacker Jake Trantin; I think Jake s playing very well, he got the pick the other night and set up our second score. We have guys back there who are playing very well. We just need to put it all together for four quarters. Q: You had a big win against Virginia but now have a tough CAA South schedule ahead of you, so do you kind of need to not forget about but tuck away the Virginia win? A: I think that you d be hard pressed to tell some of our fans that the win didn t matter. I think a lot of people around here still think that one matters. But it is kind of our approach normally. We moved on after the Virginia game in the next week when we went in against Central Connecticut. The players have done a really good job this year of concentrating each week on the game that week and the preparation that s needed that week. That s something we have been doing up to this point, and I certainly would think we d continue on as we prepare for Delaware this week. We ll put everything into the preparation for Saturday s game.
