In Division I, Lakewood St. Edward is looking to become just the third No. 7 regional seed since 1999 to win a state title (Cle. St. Ignatius in 2001 & Piqua in 2006). The following seeds have advanced to the state finals: No. 1 seed 7 (Colerain, Hoban, Massillon, Alter, Wyoming, Orrville, Johnstown-Monroe) No. 2 seed 2 (Kenston, Kirtland) No. 3 seed 2 (Marion Local, Trimble) No. 4 seed 0 No. 5 seed 2 (Girard, McComb) No. 6 seed 0 No. 7 seed 1 (St. Edward) No. 8 seed 0 In the Beginning to Seven Divisions When the OHSAA created the football playoffs in 1972, there were three divisions (called Class A, AA and AAA) and only one playoff qualifier per region (12 total playoff qualifiers). Now in its 46th year, the postseason has expanded to seven divisions and 224 total playoff qualifiers. Expansion occurred in 1980 to five divisions and two qualifiers per region, and then again in 1985 to four qualifiers per region. In 1994, a sixth division was added, while in 1999, the number of qualifiers per region increased to eight. The playoffs expanded to seven divisions in OHSAA Football by the Numbers 717 High schools in Ohio that played football in Divisions for the playoffs 28 Total Regions (4 per division) 8 Playoff qualifiers per region 32 Playoff qualifiers per division 224 Total playoff qualifiers 31.2 Percentage of football playing schools that qualify 72 Schools in Division I 108 Average number of schools in Division II through VII Noting the Undefeated and the.500 Only 24 teams across Ohio went undefeated during the regular-season, which is the second-fewest in the playoff era (since only 22 teams went undefeated in 2015). In the first round of the playoffs, 20 of those undefeated teams won, including three on the road, including Garfield Heights (Div. II, 5 seed in Region 5), McDonald (Div. VI, 5 seed in Region 21) and Pandora Gilboa (Div. VII, 6 seed in Region 26). Also of note, a record 11 teams with 5-5 records qualified for the playoffs this year. Only one of those 5-5 teams, Warren John F. Kennedy in Division VII, won their regional quarterfinal game. JFK reached the regional finals. About the Regionals, State Semifinals and Neutral Sites The regional playoffs follow bracket format, beginning with the regional quarterfinals. Regional Quarterfinals (Nov. 2 and 3): During the first round, the higher seed hosts the game at its home stadium or the stadium of its choosing. The No. 8 seed will play at the No. 1 seed, the No. 7 seed at No. 2, etc. NEUTRAL SITES: Regional Semifinals (Nov. 9 and10), Regional Finals (Nov. 16 and 17) and State Semifinals (Nov. 23 and 24): Neutral sites are selected by the OHSAA. There are many factors that go into determining playoff sites, such as quality of field surface, seating capacity, quality of lighting, size of locker rooms and distance from field, press box size, parking, and a separate locker room for officials. After all those factors are taken into consideration, it must be confirmed that the site is available and willing to host a playoff game on the date needed. The OHSAA cannot mandate that a specific site be available and it is rare to have an available site exactly halfway between the two competing schools. Host sites keep revenue from concession stands and parking and they also receive a predetermined rental fee from the OHSAA, which covers game expenses. Proving the Pollsters, Part 2 Of the 56 schools that advanced to the regional finals, 37 were ranked in the Top 10 of their division in the final Associated Press state poll. The match-ups of highest ranked teams came in Division V and VI. In Division V, it was No. 2-ranked Middletown Madison vs. No. 3 Wheelersburg. In Division VI, No. 2 Coldwater met No. 3 Maria Stein Marion Local. Also in Division VI, No. 1-ranked Kirtland faced No. 4-ranked Mogadore. All 70 teams that were ranked in the final AP poll qualified for the playoffs and they went in the first round. Of note, In Division VII, Leipsic knocked off AP No. 1 Sycamore Mohawk, 40-14, in Region 26. In Division III, Thornville Sheridan defeated AP No. 2 Bellbrook, 27-19, in Region 10. In 2017, all 70 teams ranked in the AP Top 10 made the playoffs and 35 of them reached the regional finals. Three poll champs in 2017 also won state titles on the field, including Trotwood-Madison (Div. III), Steubenville (Div. IV) and Maria Stein Marion Local (Div. VI). Noting the State Semifinalists Four teams made their first football state final four appearance this year, including Girard (Div. IV), Attica Seneca East (Div. VI), Beverly Ft. Frye (Div. VI) and Ft. Loramie (Div. VII). Of note, Seneca East had not won a playoff game prior to this season. Four other teams made a return trip to the final four for the first time in a long time: Norwalk (last appearance in 1974), Chagrin Falls Kenston (1995), Liberty Center (2000) and St. Marys Memorial (2004). Speaking of Norwalk, after winning a state title in 1974,

3 the Truckers went 29 years before qualifying for the playoffs again (2013). Five of this year s semifinalists are now in the double-digits for state semifinal appearances, including Lakewood St Edward (10th), Massillon Washington (12th), Kettering Archbishop Alter (11th), Orrville (10th, Maria Stein Marion Local (17th). Newark Catholic is the leader in that category with 25 final four appearances. Noting the Regional Finalists Of last year s 14 state finalists, eight reached this year s regional finals. Of note, in Division III and IV, neither state finalist from a year ago advanced to the regional finals. Eight of the regional championship games featured the No. 1 vs. No. 2 seeds. Division V was the only division where all four No. 1 seeds advanced to the regional final. There were 13 undefeated teams that advanced to the regional finals, but only two regional finals included undefeated teams squaring off against each other. They both took place in Division II, including Region 5 (Akron Archbishop Hoban vs. Maple Hts.) and Region 7 (Massillon Washington vs. Wadsworth). Of the 10 teams that won their first playoff game in school history in week 11, three advanced to the third round, including Byesville Meadowbrook (Div. V, Region 19), Attica Seneca East (Div. VI, Region 22) and Edgerton (Div. VII, Region 27). In a Division VI regional final, the top two schools on the OHSAA s all-time playoff wins list faced each other, as Midwest Athletic Conference rivals Maria Stein Marion Local (75) topped Coldwater (73). Speaking of the MAC, this year will be the first time that a MAC school is not playing for the Division VII state title. Division VII began in First-Round Playoff Results by Seed Higher seeds (home teams) went in the first round of the playoffs Nov No. 1 seeds went 26-2, No. 2 seeds went 20-8, No. 3 seeds went 21-7 and No. 4 seeds went The two No. 8 seeds to win at No. 1 seeds included Division III, Region 10, Rocky River (defeated Clyde 27-17) and Division VII, Region 26, Leipsic (defeated Sycamore Mohawk 40-14). In both of those regions, only one higher seed/home team won in the first round. In 2017 playoffs, the higher seeds went in the first round. There was one No. 8 seed that won, as Reading defeated Casstown Miami East in Div. V, Region 20. In 2016, first-round hosts went and five No. 8 seeds won, including Avon Lake in Div. VI (28-21 at Hannibal River). In 2015, first-round hosts went and four No. 1 seeds lost. First Round Success Three schools continued their amazing success rate in the first round of the playoffs. St. Henry has been in the playoffs 17 times and is now 17-0 in first-round playoff games. Cincinnati Colerain is now 20-0 in the first round, although one of its first-round games (1995) was later forfeited. Also of note, since 1998, Coldwater is 21-0 in the first-round of the playoffs (22-2 all-time in the first round). In addition, three schools won their first-round playoff game nine straight years before losing, including Germantown Valley View, Mogadore and Newark Licking Valley. Making History Entering the 2018 season, 59 OHSAA member schools had never made the football playoffs. That number decreased by one as Springfield Northwestern (Division IV, Region 16) qualified this year for the first time (lost in first round). The last team to win a state championship in its first year in the playoffs was Dublin Scioto in In 2017, four schools made the playoffs for the first time, including Lima Perry (Div. VII, Region 28), Galion Northmor (Div. VI, Region 23), Eastlake North (Div. II, Region 5) and Middletown Madison (Div. V, Region 20). Week 10 Movers Many schools needed to win their final regular-season game last weekend in order to clinch a playoff berth. Several schools had big wins to jump into the playoff field after being outside the Top 8 in their region heading into week 10. A total of 22 schools were outside the Top 8 in their region heading into week 10, but qualified for the playoffs. The biggest mover was Alliance (Div. III, Region 9), which went from 12th to sixth. Coldwater and Marion Local Set Consecutive Playoff Wins Record Coldwater (streak ended in 2016) and Maria Stein Marion Local (streak ended in 2015) recently set the OHSAA record for most consecutive playoff victories with 24. In 2005, the MAC had its first double-championship weekend as Coldwater won the Division IV title in Canton and Delphos St. John s won the Division VI state title a few hours later in Massillon. The MAC has had two football state champions eight times since 2005 (2005, 2006, 2007, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and In 2014, the MAC made state history in becoming the first conference to win three state football championship titles in the same season Coldwater, Minster and Marion Local swept Divisions V, VI and VII. The MAC is 4-1 in Div. VII state championship games. The MAC is 72-4 in first round playoff games against non-mac schools since the playoffs expanded to eight qualifiers per region in (The four losses include a Versailles loss to Lima Central Catholic in 2005, a Delphos St. John s loss to Arlington in 2014 and Anna losses in 2017 and 2018.) The MAC is against non-mac schools in OHSAA regional championship games. The MAC is 37-7 in state semifinal games against non-mac schools. As of November 11, 2018, the MAC has won 130 various OHSAA state team championships, including 33 in football. Before the Playoffs Historians have found that in most years since 1895, the media or a specific organization named an Ohio high school football state champion. The Associated Press began its polls in 1947 and the OHSAA created the playoffs in The research of mythical state champions dating back to 1895 has been compiled on the football page at OHSAA.org. Championship Games Return to Canton After hosting the OHSAA state championship games in Columbus throughout the 1980s, natural grass was installed in Ohio Stadium in Columbus in the spring of 1990 and OSU asked the OHSAA to move its football state championship games to another location. The OHSAA found a home in Stark County, with Canton Fawcett Stadium and Massillon Paul Brown Tiger Stadium sharing the state championship games for 24 years from The finals returned to Columbus from before returning to Canton for 2017 and MAC Builds on Success (By Gary Rasberry, Celina Daily Standard) The Midwest Athletic Conference started in 1973, but it wasn t until 1989 that the conference began its run of football dominance of the smaller divisions. From 1989, when Minster won the conference s first state title, to 2015 when Fort Recovery won its first-ever state title and Coldwater captured its sixth since 2005, the MAC has been regular visitors to the state championships game. In that span, the MAC has been missing from state championship weekend only three years (1991, 1993 and 2002). In 2003, Versailles, a five-time state champion before joining in the MAC in 2000, won its first MAC state football title, starting a streak where the MAC has brought home at least one title
