Main Office Phone w: (301) zbolno@umd.edu Spring Prospectus MARYLAND BEGINS SPRING MARCH Spring Notes The Terps began spring practice on Saturday, March 1 at 10:35 a.m. It was the first of 14 scheduled practices in preparation for the annual Spring Game on Friday, April 11 at 7 p.m. at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium. Maryland had six workouts before taking the week of March 16 off for spring break. Following spring break, practices resume on Monday, March 24. Workouts will be held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Head coach Randy Edsall and the Terps return 53 letterwinners from a team that finished 7-6 and earned a spot in the 2013 Military Bowl including 18 offensive and defensive starters along with place-kicker Brad Craddock and punter Nate Renfro. 2 NEWS AND NOTES Maryland returns 87 percent of its offensive and defensive two-deep from the end of last season. There are 21 of 23 offensive players back and 18 of 22 defensive players. Additionally, 11 of the 12 members of the final special teams two-deep are back in Offensively, Maryland returns nine starters from its 2013 squad including quarterback C.J. Brown, who became the first-ever Maryland quarterback to throw for over 2,000 yards (2,242 yds) and rush for over 500 yards (576 yds) in a single season. Maryland returns its top three rushers from a season ago in Brandon Ross (776 yds), C.J. Brown (576) and Albert Reid (294 yds) and its top five receivers in Levern Jacobs (640 yds), Stefon Diggs (587 yds), Amba Etta-Tawo (500 yds), Deon Long (489 yds) and Nigel King (450 yds). Along the offensive line, Maryland returns four of its five starters from the unit that closed the 2013 season: Sal Conaboy, Ryan Doyle, Michael Dunn and Andrew Zeller. In addition, Moise Larose and Evan Mulrooney have starting experience. Nine starters return on the defensive side of the ball including the top-five tacklers from a season ago led by defensive back Sean Davis (102 tkls) and linebacker Cole Farrand (84 tkls), an All-ACC performer last season. Maryland recorded 37 sacks in 2013, the most by a Terrapin team since 2002 (37 sacks). The defensive unit returns 68 percent of its sacks (25) including defensive lineman Andre Monroe who had a team-best 9.5 sacks. Maryland welcomes three new members to the coaching staff in Keenan McCardell takes over as the wide receivers coach. Greg Studrawa will serve as the offensive line coach, and Chad Wilt will coach the defensive line. Maryland welcomed 17 new student-athletes to the program with its 2014 recruiting class. For the third straight year, Maryland landed a five-star recruit in Damian Prince. The Terps are one of only 18 teams in the nation to sign a five-star recruit according to Rivals. OL Derwin Gray enrolled in classes this spring, but will miss spring workouts due to injury. Gray, who signed as a Terp in 2013, attended Fork Union Military Academy last season. Gray was ranked as the top-rated recruit in Washington, D.C., in the 2013 class. Seven bowl teams from last year appear on Maryland s schedule: Syracuse (Texas Bowl), Ohio State (Orange Bowl), Iowa (Outback Bowl), Wisconsin (Capital One Bowl), Michigan State (Rose Bowl), Michigan (Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl) and Rutgers (Pinstripe Bowl). ON THE TRAINING TABLE A handful of Maryland players are unable to participate in spring practice due to injury and recovery. The list includes Milan Collins (ankle), Yannik Cudjoe-Virgil (upper body), Elvis Dennah (toe), Stefon Diggs (leg), Derwin Gray (shoulder), Deon Long (leg), Kingsley Opara (shoulder), Jarrett Ross (shoulder), Ty Tucker (knee) and Alex Twine (shoulder). WELCOME BACK This spring Maryland welcomes back RB Wes Brown and WR Marcus Leak. As a freshman in 2012, Brown finished second on the team with 382 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Brown will have three years of eligibility remaining. Before suffering a toe injury that forced him to miss the final five games of the 2012 season, Leak caught 23 passes for 393 yards and two touchdowns in five games. Leak averaged 17.1 yards per catch, second highest on the team. Leak will have two years of eligibility remaining. COACHING STAFF ADDITIONS Maryland made three staff moves following the conclusion of the 2013 season. The Terps added Keenan McCardell (wide receivers), Greg Studrawa (offensive line) and Chad Wilt (defensive line) to the coaching staff. McCardell, a two-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time Super Bowl champion, spent 19 seasons in the NFL, 17 as a player. He spent the 2010 and 2011 seasons as the wide receivers coach with the Washington Redskins. Studrawa arrives in College Park after seven seasons at LSU where he served as the offensive line coach and spent two seasons as the offensive coordinator. He brings 25 years of collegiate coaching experience to the Terrapin staff. After three seasons as the defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at Ball State, Wilt will serve as the d-line coach with the Terps. Wilt and the defensive staff saw the unit improve in each of his three seasons with the Cardinals. UNDER CENTER... Dual-threat quarterback C.J. Brown is back for his final season in College Park. Brown started 11 games in 2013 and passed for 2,242 yards and rushed for 576 yards to become the first Maryland player in school history to pass for 2,000 or more yards and rush for 500 or more yards in a single-season. Hills, who started seven games as a freshman in 2012, redshirted last season. Shane Cockerille is next up on the depth chart. EXPERIENCE UP FRONT Maryland returns four of its five offensive linemen who started the final game of the 2013 season, but will be looking to replace De Onte Arnett. Last season, the unit helped Maryland pass for 3,231 yards, the first time a Terrapin team has eclipsed 3,000 yards passing since At center, Sal Conaboy is the most experienced member of the o-line. Conaboy has started 27 career games with 13 of those starts coming in Ryan Doyle and Michael Dunn return to anchor the tackle the positions. Doyle started the first nine games of 2013 at right tackle before shifting to left tackle. Dunn started the first nine games at right guard before moving to right tackle to finish the season. Andrew Zeller moved to right guard in the final four games of last season and is expected to anchor that position once again. The left guard position is an open competition between Silvano Altamirano and Evan Mulrooney. Mulrooney has played primarily at center during his two seasons in College Park, but will get some work at guard as part of head coach Randy Edsall s commitment to find the best five guys for the unit. Moise Larose also has playing experience having made his first career start against Syracuse last season and is slated to backup Doyle to begin spring camp University of Maryland Football Spring Prospectus OPEN COMPETITION AT TIGHT END Outside of left guard, the only other position on the offensive side of the ball without a returning starter is tight end. The departure of Dave Stinebaugh has opened a hole with several competing for the starting spot. P.J. Gallo and Andrew Isaacs begin spring practice as the co-favorites to replace Stinebaugh. Gallo appeared in all 12 games a season ago primarily on special teams. Isaacs also played primarily on special teams and appeared in 10 games last season. Derrick Hayward, Brian McMahon and Eric Roca will also be in the mix. Hayward and Roca served a redshirt season in CROWDED BACKFIELD With the return of Wes Brown, head coach Randy Edsall and the Maryland offensive staff will have plenty of options to consider at running back. Brandon Ross and Albert Reid enter spring camp as co-starters. Ross has led the team in rushing the past two seasons and carried the ball 166 times for 776 yards and four touchdowns in 2013, and averaged 4.7 yards per carry. Reid has appeared in 24 career games and has proved to be a valuable asset to spell Ross. Behind Ross and Reid, Jacquille Veii, Joe Riddle and Brown will compete for playing time. Veii rushed for 146 yards on 39 carries last season, while Riddle played primarily on special teams. Tehuti Miles and Zimuzo Nwaigwe will also see time at running back during the spring. At fullback, Maryland welcomes back Kenneth Goins, Jr. Goins played in all 13 games a season ago and showed good blocking prowess as well as being an asset in the running and passing game. Veteran Tyler Cierski is back and will be joined by Andrew Stefanelli. TALENT AT RECEIVER Stefon Diggs and Deon Long both went down with seasonending injuries at Wake Forest last season. While both are expected to return in the fall, they will miss the spring season rehabilitating their respective injuries. As a result, several targets emerged at the end of last season, which should provide the Terps numerous options come the fall. Despite missing the last six games of the season, Diggs still ranked second on the team with 587 yards receiving and averaged a team-best 17.3 yards per reception to help earn him honorable mention All-ACC honors. Long averaged 69.9 yards per game receiving, which ranked second on the club. Following the injuries to Diggs and Long, Levern Jacobs emerged as a top target. Jacobs completed the season as the team leader in catches (47) and yards (640). Jacobs hauled in a career-best eight receptions for a personal-high 158 yards against Clemson including a career-long 71-yard touchdown reception, Maryland s longest scoring play of the season. In addition to Jacobs, Amba Etta-Tawo recorded two 100-yard receiving games in the final five games of the season. He had 109 yards receiving against Syracuse and finished with 101 at NC State. Slated to start at one of the receiver positions, Nigel King has the most playing experience of any wideout. King has appeared in 24 career games and has 575 career yards receiving. Daniel Adams and Marcus Leak will compete for time with Etta-Tawo, while DeAndre Lane will push Jacobs for playing time. ILB Cole Farrand Sr.-3V 6-3, 245 A honorable mention All-ACC selection. Was second on the team in tackles (84) last season and averaged 7.6 per game, 11th best in the ACC. ILB L.A. Goree Sr.-3V 6-2, 240 Has 31 career appearances and was the third-leading tackler last season (75). DE Quinton Jefferson Jr.-2V 6-3, 275 Made 13 starts last season and had 47 tackles with 7.5 TFL and 3.0 sacks. CB Jeremiah Johnson Sr.-2V 5-11, 195 Missed most of last season due to injury. Appeared in only two games. NT Darius Kilgo Sr.-2V 6-3, 310 Appeared in 13 games with 12 starts and totaled 37 tackles, 6.5 TFL and 2.0 sacks. D-LINE INTACT New defensive line coach Chad Wilt will be inheriting a defensive front-3 that returns all of its starters from a season ago. After bouncing between nose tackle and defensive end last season, Andre Monroe is slated to start at one of the DE positions after a superb 2013 season in which he led Maryland and finished tied for sixth in the ACC in sacks with 9.5. Monroe also led the Terps with 17.0 TFL, which ranked fifth in the conference. Slated to start on the opposite side of the line is Quinton Jefferson. Jefferson racked up 47 tackles a season ago and finished with 7.5 TFL after starting all 13 games. Keith Bowers will slide inside and share the nose tackle position with Darius Kilgo. Kilgo had 6.5 TFL last season in 13 appearances. Bowers appeared in all 13 games and tallied 32 stops. Redshirt freshman Malik Jones and Azubuike Ukandu will compete with Jefferson for playing time in the spring. Nate Clarke will also see time at nose tackle, while Roman Braglio, who had 3.5 TFL and two sacks a season ago, will push for time at DE behind Monroe. Redshirt freshman Chandler Burkett and Ruben Franco will also be in the mix. PLENTY OF EXPERIENCE AT LINEBACKER Along with the wide receivers and cornerbacks, the linebacking unit was bit by the injury bug last season. Cole Farrand, Matt Robinson and Alex Twine all missed time in 2013 and Yannik Cudjoe-Virgil missed the final seven games of the season. The result is a unit that is battle-tested and experienced. Maryland will look to replace one of its two lost starters on defense in the form of Marcus Whitfield. Whitfield finished second on the team in sacks with nine and had 15.0 TFL. Expected to slide into Whitfield s OLB position is sophomore Yannick Ngakoue for the spring season, while Cudjoe-Virgil returns from injury. L.A. Goree returns at inside linebacker. Goree has 31 career appearances and finished third on the team in tackles last season (75). Opposite Goree will be honorable mention All-ACC selection, Cole Farrand. Farrand finished second on the team with 84 tackles and ranked 11th in the ACC averaging 7.6 per game. Matt Robinson, who ranked third on the team with 10.0 TFL last season, will occupy an outside linebacker position opposite Ngakoue. Cavon Walker, who appeared in 13 games last season, will compete for time with Robinson along with Avery Thompson. Inside, Jermaine Carter, Jr. and Brock Dean are set to compete with Farrand, while Goree will receive competition from Abner Logan and Jalen Brooks. Clarence Murphy will be in the mix behind Ngakoue. SECONDARY ROLES With injuries to starting defensive backs Jeremiah Johnson and Dexter McDougle, the Maryland defense employed several new faces in the secondary last season with then-freshman William Likely having one of the biggest impacts. Likely started 11 of 13 games in 2013 and finished with a team-best seven passes defensed including one interception. Likely is scheduled to have a starting role this spring and will play opposite Johnson or Alvin Hill. Johnson will be limited this spring as he continues to recover from an injury. Last season, Hill appeared in 12 games and finished with two passes defensed. -- pg Undray Clark will also be in the mix for playing time behind Hill and Johnson, while Michael Washington will push Likely. At safety, Maryland returns its top tackler in Sean Davis, who totaled 102 tackles and averaged 7.8 per game, which ranked ninth in the ACC. Davis also finished with five passes defensed starting in all 13 games for the Terps. Davis is joined by fellow returnee Anthony Nixon. Nixon had 60 stops a season ago and finished with four passes defensed in 11 starts. Another returnee, A.J. Hendy will vie for time at safety. Hendy appeared in all 13 games in 2013 and had 32 tackles, two fumble recoveries and an interception, which was returned for a touchdown against West Virginia. Rashid Conteh, Zach Dancel and J.T. Ventura will also compete for playing time at safety during the spring. IT S GOOD Brad Craddock is returning for his third season as Maryland s place kicker. Last season, Craddock converted 84 percent of his field goals (21-of-25) and averaged 1.62 field goals per game, which was the best mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Craddock s 21 field goals last season rank third all-time at Maryland in a single-season. Nathan Renfro is penciled in to handle the punting duties once again for Maryland. Renfro averaged 40.8 yards per punt and downed 18 of his punts inside the 20-yard line. SPECIAL TEAMS STARTERS RETURNING/LOST Starters Returning (4) PK Brad Craddock Jr.-2V 6-0, 180 Made 21 field goals last season, third most in school history. Averaged 1.62 field goals per game, which led the ACC. KR/PR William Likely So.-1V 5-7, 175 Averaged 26.0 yards per kick return, which ranked third in the ACC, and averaged 12.8 yards per punt return, fourth best in the conference. 10 RANDY EDSALL Head Coach Syracuse 80 Fourth Year Randy Edsall enters his fourth season as head football coach at the University of Maryland, leading a program that continues to make great strides both on and off the field. Edsall was named the 34th coach in Maryland football history in January Since taking over, Edsall and his staff have placed a great emphasis on recruiting the local Maryland/Washington, D.C. market which is heavily recruited by schools across the nation and is considered a football hotbed. The result of this focus was the signing of 63 athletes, 33 from the area, since Edsall and his staff have recruited classes ranked in the top 35 nationally by Rivals the last two of three years, including the 31st overall in In addition, under Edsall s command and following a pattern he started at the University of Connecticut, the football program s Athletic Progress Rate (APR) moved significantly upward after a five year decline. The football team s APR, which measures eligibility and retention, increased its multi-year score from 922 ( ) to 937and its single year score from 905 to 948. The Maryland program continued its ascent in 2013 totaling seven victories and earning its first bowl appearance since Offensively, the Terps passed for over 3,000 yards for only the fourth time in program history and the first time since Additionally, Maryland totaled over 500 yards of offense in its first three games, the first time that has happen since On the defensive side of the ball, the Terps attacked opposing offenses and ranked second in the ACC in sacks (36) and averaged 3.00 sacks per game, tied for the 18th most in the nation. The unit also excelled on third down holding opponents to a 34.2 conversion rate, which the 21st-best mark nationally. Prior to coming to College Park, Edsall, a native of nearby Glen Rock, Pa, spent twelve seasons coaching the University of Connecticut Huskies where he took the program from FCS (formerly I-AA) to five bowl games, including a BCS bowl. The 2010 Big East Coach of the Year led the Huskies to a record over his last four seasons there, including two bowl victories and his leadership resulted in UConn being the first program ever to go from FBS newcomer to BCS bowl participant in just seven seasons. Edsall departed UConn as the school s all-time leader in career wins (74) and most games coached (144). He was a two-time recipient of the prestigious Bowl Championship Division Head Coach of the Year in New England by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston (2007, 2010). During his tenure at UConn, the Huskies finished in the top twenty nationally for total offense twice (2003, 2004) and total defense three times (2002, 200r5, 2008). Under Edsall s guidance Connecticut defeated teams from the ACC, Big Ten, Big East, Big 12, Conference USA and the SEC. In 2007, as Edsall continued to grow the program to prominence, the Huskies earned their first-ever national rankings peaking at #13 in the BCS standings in November. That year they became just the second Big East team ever to go 7-0 at home and defeat three teams at home that were ranked in the top ten during the season. Off the field, just as he is doing at Maryland, Edsall s teams were strong in the classroom as well. In 2007, 2008 and 2009 UConn was recognized by the American Football Coaches Association for its high graduation rate. In 2003 UConn was the only public Division I-A school to graduate at least 90% of its football players and in 2005, it was one of only eight schools to both graduate 70% and win a bowl game. When Edsall was named the head coach at Connecticut on December 21, 1998 he brought 19 years of coaching experience with him. He earned the job at Connecticut after a year as the defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech where the 14th ranked Yellow Jackets went 9-2. Prior to his season at Georgia Tech Edsall spend three seasons under two-time Super Bowl Champion coach Tom Coughlin as the secondary coach for the NFL Jacksonville Jaguars. During his time in Jacksonville the expansion Jaguars reached the playoffs twice, including a berth in the 1996 AFC Championship Game. Edsall began his coaching career in 1980 at his alma mater, Syracuse University. The former quarterback at Syracuse started as a graduate assistant ( ) before joining the staff in 1983 overseeing the running backs under head coach Dick MacPherson. Edsall oversaw the running backs for three years ( and 1986) and oversaw the tight ends in 1985 before making the switch to defense. He coached the Syracuse defensive backs from and during that time the Orangemen were ranked among the Division I-A leaders in pass defense. After the 1990 season Tom Coughlin, then coach of Boston College, hired Edsall to coach the defensive backs at BC. Edsall was a three-year letter winner in football, basketball and baseball at Susquehannock High School (Pa.) and was an allstate selection in all three sports as a senior which led to induction into the York Area Sports Hall of Fame. At Syracuse he earned a bachelor s degree in physical education from Syracuse in 1980 and a master s degree in health and physical education in Edsall and his wife, Eileen met at Syracuse University where she was a basketball and volleyball standout who was later inducted into the Syracuse University Hall of Fame.
