(JOHN CARROLL) On Monroe: Athletic, speedy receiver with good size who enters spring atop the depth chart at wide receiver a big-play type receiver with outstanding potential and the ability to stretch a defense the most experienced player of this year s receiving corps and the unit s lone senior has played in 32 games in his career 31 career receptions (Junior): Saw action in all 11 games with two starts also played in the Orange Bowl finished fourth on the team with 14 receptions for a career-high 229 yards... 3 2001 ACC Champions Nick Novak PLACEKICKER SO.-1V CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. (ALBEMARLE) 46 On Novak: Starting placekicker who entered spring 2001 battling for a job and now enters this spring as one of the top young kickers in the country transformed the Terp kicking game from an inexperienced question mark at the start of last year into one of the top units in the ACC has a strong leg and good accuracy has worked hard in the offseason to improve even more upon his consistency and leg strength handles placekicking and kickoff duties (Redshirt Freshman): Starting kicker in all 11 games plus the Orange Bowl was 16-of- 25 on field goals for a 64 percent success rate missed just one of his 42 PATs on the season an honorable mention AllACC selection... also second-team Freshman All-America by The Sporting News... connected on 12 of his last 14 field goals to close out the season... two of the kicks were from 50 yards or longer and four were from at least 40 yards... the only two misses were from 50 yards out vs. Duke, which hit the right upright, and the 62-yard attempt vs. Clemson... finished one field goal shy of the Maryland single-season record of his 41 PATs set a new single-season record at Maryland... led the team in scoring with 89 points... ranked 15th in Division I-A in field goals per game (1.45) and 29th in scoring (8.09 ppg)... (NEWARK ACADEMY) 22 On Parson: One of the true surprises of last season began last spring trying his hand at tailback and finished 2001 as a contributor and a player to watch in the future at wide receiver has steady hands and good speed will compete for even more playing time this year came on at the end of the year as a reliable kickoff and punt returner will likely resume those duties this season... will see time as a slot receiver (Freshman): Appeared in all 11 regular-season games and the Orange Bowl had 11 receptions for 156 yards... also returned 17 kicks for 375 yards... one of four true freshmen to see playing time... top offensive contributor among the team s true freshman... played more and more as the year progressed... finished 64th in Division I-A in kickoff returns with a 22.1 average... (vs. NCSU) had career-highs in receptions (three) and receiving yards (80)... the 80 yards receiving led the team... caught a pass over the middle for a career-long 64 yards before he was stripped at the goal line... also returned five kickoffs for 123 yards and handled the punt return duties for the first time this season... (GEORGE WASHINGTON) 1 On Perry: Fourth-year junior and All-America candidate who enters the season as a player to watch at both the conference and national levels candidate for the Doak Walker Award after working his way into becoming a finalist for the honor as a sophomore enters spring still nursing a stomach strain suffered prior to the Orange Bowl a quick, explosive tailback who is surprisingly powerful combines quick feet, a strong burst, breakaway speed and excellent open-field moves when healthy, hits holes hard and is always a threat to go the distance always seems to finish plays falling forward proved to be a potent receiver out of the backfield in the second half of the season when the opposition s focus became stopping the Maryland rushing attack (Junior): Starter in all 11 regular-season games and the Orange Bowl ACC Offensive Player of the Year... rushed 219 times for 1,242 yards and 10 TD s... finished second on the team in receiving with 40 receptions for 359 yards and a pair of TDs... was the first non-senior to win the award and is just the first Terrapin to ever win the prestigious award named a second-team All-American by Football News... a 2001 finalist for the Doak Walker Award, given to the nation s top running back one of a record-tying seven Terps to earn first-team All-ACC honors... finished the season ranked 19th in the NCAA in rushing yards per game (112.9)... also ranked among the nation s leaders in all-purpose yards per game (ninth/ 156.2) and scoring (69th/6.55 ppg)... averaged 5.7 yards per carry and had 12 touchdowns... became the only sophomore i n Maryland history to have five consecutive 100-yard efforts... with his 64 yards on 10 carries in the first half of the WVU game, it snapped a streak of three straight 100-yard outings by halftime... was just the fifth Terp to crack the 1,000-yard plateau in a season... (LANSDOWNE) On Roundtree: A physical force who had the most productive season of his career at defensive end a year ago one of the strongest players, pound-for-pound, in the history of Maryland football led defensive linemen in every strength/athleticism category (bench press, clean, squat, vertical jump and 40-yard dash time) after last year s testing day strength index of 796 is the highest of any player at any position in school history combines a 460-lb. bench press with a 710-lb. squat, a 36-inch vertical jump and a 4.68 forty time showed speed, athleticism and an ability to get into the opposition s backfield a year ago. Kyle Schmitt OFFENSIVE GUARD SO.-1V LATROBE, PA. (BISHOP McNAMARA) On Shimé: Fifth-year senior who will get a chance to fill the hole left at nose tackle by 2001 senior Charles Hill made the move from defensive end to nose tackle last spring good upper-body strength (450-lb. bench) one of five defensive linemen to earn Iron Terp status for their work in the weightroom (Junior): Started every game but one (including the Orange Bowl) at defensive end... finished the season with 27 tackles (15 solo), five tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks and a fumble recovery sack total was second best on the team had a team-high 12 quarterback hurries (vs. TSU) had a busy day, finishing with 1.5 sacks for minus 13 yards and two TFLs along with four total tackles... (WESTLAKE HS) On Starks: A talented player who is making a name for himself early in his career a key addition to the defensive line in his first season of collegiate ball in 01 can play defensive tackle or end has worked hard to get stronger and enters 2002 camp in excellent shape spring will do a lot to determine where he will play combines athleticism with an ideal defensive lineman frame could play his way into postseason recognition with continued improvement (Freshman): Saw action in all 11 games as well as the Orange Bowl posted 35 tackles (24 unassisted), seven TFLs, 3.5 sacks and had one quarterback hurry a fourth-team Freshman All-America selection by The Sporting News... (Orange Bowl) had six tackles and one tackle for a loss... (vs. NCSU) had a strong effort with five total tackles including four solo stops... (vs. Duke) played the finest game of his young career, totaling a career-high nine tackles... five of the tackles were solo stops... played 35 snaps and finished with two TFLs and one quarterback sack... (ANACOSTIA) On Stewart: Fifth-year player who came on in his junior year as a playmaker on special teams and in the nickel package will get a look at safety in the spring has had injury problems but played injury-free last year and showed the ability to get into the opponent s backfield in nickel situations an Iron Terp (Junior): Played in all 11 regular season games and saw action in the Orange Bowl had his best year as a Terp, recording 19 tackles, four for loss, with 2.5 sacks, an interception and a PBU (vs. TSU) played well and totaled four tackles including one sack... two of the four tackles were of the solo variety... (vs. FSU) finished with two tackles including a TFL for minus six yards... he was also credited with half a sack... (vs. UVa) finished with three tackles and an 11-yard sack... the sack was the first of his career and ended UVa s first drive of the game... (vs. WFU) had a critical pass breakup late in the fourth quarter to help seal the victory... also had two tackles... (vs. EMU) made a beautiful diving interception... the interception was the first of his career... (LEBANON) 66 On Wike: Hard-working lineman who enters his senior season on the watch list for the Outland Trophy an All-ACC selection a year ago who is one of the top guards in the country versatile lineman who has played guard, center and tight end in his Terrapin career takes a streak of 32 consecutive regular season starts into the 2002 campaign gritty competitor who overcame injuries to start the final 10 games of 1999 a heady performer who will be one of the leaders of this year s experienced unit which returns four starters all-around athlete with good quickness (Junior): Starter in all 11 games missed the Orange Bowl with an injured foot a first team All-ACC lineman also a first team Academic All-District selection... had 43 big plays on the season, second most behind Melvin Fowler who had the most among offensive linemen allowed just two sacks in 726 offensive plays graded out as the team s top lineman vs. Virginia, Clemson and NC State... (vs. CU) got the start at left guard and graded out as Maryland s top lineman... nominated for ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week... had eight big blocks... played 72 snaps... Curtis Williams LINEBACKER SO.-1V HUNTINGTON STATION, N.Y.
