Both teams enter with a 1-0 Ivy record, but only one will leave atop of the Ivy League standings. The Series This series has been dominated by Penn of late. The Quakers have lost only three games on the field of play against the Lions since 1982 though two of those losses came in New York City and Penn is just at Wien Stadium. In all, the Red and Blue hold a advantage over their Ivy counterparts. At 14-3, head coach Al Bagnoli has had more success against Columbia than any other Ivy League opponent. He is 7-1 at Wien Stadium and has won all three meetings with Columbia coach Norries Wilson. Last Week It took a little while, but the Penn football team was able to establish itself on defense and offense and down pesky Bucknell, The Quakers scored early and looked like they might roll to the win, but it wasn t until midway through the fourth quarter that they found paydirt again as Bucknell held them at bay. With its top three quarterbacks all sidelined with injuries, Penn started John Hurley under center in his first career start. On its second drive, Penn pulled out some trickeration at the end, capping a nine-play drive with a halfback option that saw Matt Hamscher find Luke DeLuca for a five-yard touchdown pass. The 7-0 lead stuck until halftime and through the third quarter. A turnover led to a Bucknell field goal, but Penn responded, forcing a fumble deep in Bucknell territory. Bradofrd Blackmon then ran in from four yards out and the score was 14-3 with 7:35 left. Given the ball on the Bison 38-yard line, and with just a few minutes left in the game, Penn put together a four-play drive that ended with a Lyle Marsh three-yard rushing touchdown for a 21-3 lead with 1:52 to go. Quick Quaker Notes Penn has gone 17 games without allowing a 100-yard rusher... Penn has not allowed a 300- yard passer in 19 games... Penn has had at least two sacks in six of the last seven games and has recorded a sack in each of the last nine... Seven different Quakers have completed a pass this season. Up Next It will be Week 6 of the season and Penn will finally be hosting its first Ivy League game of the year. Yale will come to Franklin Field during Family Weekend on Oct. 24. The 3:30 p.m. kickoff will be broadcast on the Comcast Network. A Penn Win Would... be the 13th year in a row in which it has beaten Columbia.... give the Quakers their seventh straight win in the month of October.... mark the fifth Ivy road win in a row.... be its third straight overall and make the Quakers 3-2 overall and 2-0 in Ivy play. A Penn Loss Would... be the first to Columbia since break a four-game Ivy League road winning streak.... be less good than a win.

Munger Head Coach of Football Al Bagnoli the second-winningest active coach in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) the Penn football team has made it a way of life for the past 17 seasons. Bagnoli is the longest tenured coach in Penn s 132-year history upon entering his 18th campaign with the Red and Blue. No coach has a higher Ivy winning percentage than Bagnoli and no coach has won more outright Ivy titles than the six championship rings that Bagnoli adorns. Under his watch, 131 players have earned All-Ivy honors, 12 have signed NFL free agent contracts and three more have been selected in the NFL Draft. Prior to his success at Penn, Bagnoli spent 10 seasons at Union (N.Y) where his achievements planted him in the Union Athletic Hall of Fame. 3 Count Up to 1,300 - NCAA Record! 1,298: No program at any level of college football has played more games than the Penn Quakers. On Oct. 31, at Brown in Providence, R.I., the Quakers are set to play the 1,300th game in program history the first team in NCAA history to reach that number. Saturday s matchup with Columbia marks the 1,298th football game played by the school. Penn Penalties - We re Number One Penn s six penalties last week vs. Bucknell were the most in a game this season for the Quakers, but they still rank atop the nation in fewest penalties per game. With an average of just 3.5 penalties per game the Red and Blue are the least-flagged team among the 118 teams in the FCS. In all, Penn s 112 penalty yards are second in the country behind Ivy counterpart Dartmouth. Quarterback Questions Down to their fourth-string quarterback in John Hurley, Penn has had to get creative with quarterbacks Keiffer Garton, Kyle Olson and Billy Ragone all suffering injuries this season. Seven different Quakers have completed a pass this year. In addition to the four quarterbacks, running backs Bradford Blackmon and Matt Hamscher each have a completed pass, while wide receiver Kyle Derham has thrown three completions. Passing Problems More evidence of Penn s quarterback woes can be found in the Ivy League stats. With the Red and Blue forced to shuffle quarterbacks (three starters in four games), no Quaker signal-caller is eligible to be listed among the league leaders. Penn s leading passer? Running back Bradford Blackmon, who is tenth in the Ivy League in passing at 5.2 yards per game. All leagues require players to participate in 75 percent of their team s games to be eligible for conference statistics. Of Penn s four quarterbacks, none has played in more than two games. TD s from RB s Junior fullback Luke DeLuca caught his second career touchdown pass on Saturday against Bucknell. Both have been thrown by running backs. His go-ahead touchdown reception last week was courtesy of sophomore running back Matt Hamscher. Last season, he was on the receiving end of running back Bradford Blackmon s only career touchdown pass against Brown also a go-ahead score. Sack Stats Last year, Drew Goldsmith led Penn with four sacks. This year, Owen Thomas has almost eclipsed that number through just four games. He has registered a sack in each game thus far with 3.5 sacks on the year. Thomas is 19th in the nation and leads the Ivy League with that total. As a team, Penn has 12 sacks on the year best in the Ivy League and 12th in the country. Sack Stats #2 Penn gave up six sacks in the first game of the season the most since giving up seven to Yale on Oct. 20, However, since then, the Penn quarterbacks haven t been sacked once. Count Up to Third All-Time! 793: Entering Saturday s game against Columbia, the Quakers have accumulated 793 wins in program history. That mark is third all-time in the FCS behind only Yale and Harvard. Only Yale (805) and Harvard (801) have reached the 800-win mark. Penn s win total is 11th all-time in Division I as Michigan, Texas, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Ohio State, Penn State and Alabama from the FBS have all reached 800 wins. Oklahoma currently stands three games in front of the Quakers with 796 wins. His three catches were a career high and led the Quakers last week, and his five receptions in the past two games is also tops among the team as are his 68 receiving yards in that time (34 in each game a career high). More of Moore Senior defensive back Jonathan Moore had quite a game vs. Bucknell last week. He had a careerhigh three pass breakups as well as an interception. The afternoon propelled him to fifth in the nation and first in the Ivy League in passes defended (breakups+interceptions). He now has four breakups and an Ivy League-leading three interceptions this year. Atop the Rankings Moore is not the only Quaker to find himself atop the Ivy League rankings. Owen Thomas 3.5 sacks are best among Ivy players, as are Andrew Samson s five field goals. Atop the Rankings #2 As a team, the Quakers lead the Ivy League in total defense, scoring defense, sacks, pass defense, tackles for loss and kickoff returns in addition to fewest penalties. They are also second in the league in penalty yards and pass efficiency defense. See below for a listing of Penn s best rankings in the nation and Ivy League. Offense - Defense No matter who has the ball Saturday, it will be an intriguing matchup. Penn s offense has struggled without a consistent quarterback, but the Columbia defense is ranked second to last in the Ivy League. Whichever unit plays better will take the pressure off the strength of their team on the other side of the ball. Penn s defense leads the Ivy League in several categories, while no Ivy team has scored more points than the Lions. Score First If you re in Wien Stadium on Saturday you can pack up your belongings after the first score of the game. In each of the first four games the Quakers have played, the team that scored first never relinquished the lead. 5 Finally October Few teams in the country were happier to see the calender change at the end of September than the Penn Quakers. The team went winless in September for the third consecutive season, but once again October has wiped the slate clean. With two wins in the last two weeks, Penn has won six straight in October. The Red and Blue were a perfect 4-0 in the season s second month last year. Penn Scoring Trend Penn has scored in 114 consecutive games, the third longest streak in Ivy history. Brown holds the record at 132, which remains active. The Quakers have not been shut out since their trip to Harvard in Penn has never been shut out at home in the Al Bagnoli era. In fact, the last time the Quakers were held without a point at Franklin Field was Nov. 18, 1989, a span of 98 games. Road Trip Last season, the Quakers went 3-0 in Ivy League road games and they are off to a good start this season, winning their first Ivy contest Oct. 3 at Dartmouth. The four-game road stretch is the longest for the Quakers since 2004 when they were in the midst of winning 12 in a row. Penn s last loss at the home of an Ivy opponent came at Harvard, 23-7, on Nov. 10, Last Week s Career Efforts Last week, defensive end Owen Thomas set yet another career high, totaling eight tackles. He also matched his best performance with 1.5 tackles for loss against Bucknell. Meanwhile, fullback Luke DeLuca set new career marks by pulling in two receptions for a career high 14 yards. David Wurst s three receptions, 34 receiving yards and 29-yard catch were all bests, while Jonathan Moore set a new personal best with three pass breakups. Magic Number 10 In every single game last season the Quakers were victorious when holding opponents under 10 points (6-0). That trend has continued this season, as Penn defeated Bucknell last week, 21-3 (the fewest points allowed since a 7-0 win vs. Princeton on Nov. 3, 2007). The Red and Blue have won the last nine games in which they ve held the opponent under double digits. The last loss in such an occurance was to Lafayette, 8-7, in the 2007 season opener. Overtime Blues It s no secret to the Penn faithful that overtime has been cruel to the Quakers in recent years. Since 2006 the freshman year for many of the team s seniors the Red and Blue are 0-6 in games that have gone beyond regulation. Prior to the current streak, the Quakers were 3-0 in overtime under Bagnoli. Penn s last overtime win was Oct. 9, 2004 when they survived at Bucknell in two overtimes, Penn Scoring Drives Opponent Qtr. 6 Tough Slate With Villanova and Lafayette on the schedule, Penn s non-conference schedule has been frustratingly difficult in recent years. This year has been no different as Penn s two nonconference opponents thus far have combined to go 7-2, which includes a win over an FBS opponent. In TSN s Top 25 media poll (see page four), Villanova is ranked No. 6 in the country, while Lafayette is receiving votes. Two Ivy League Rookies of the Week In the first three weeks of the season, two members of the Penn football team received Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors. After giving the title to running back Lyle Marsh on Sept. 28, the league office announced that freshman quarterback Billy Ragone was the week s award recipient on Oct. 5. Marsh ran for 85 yards on just 15 carries in claiming the honor after a loss to Lafayette, while Ragone ran the ball nine times for a total of 62 yards and a touchdown during Penn s win at Dartmouth. Nationally Televised and Recognized With the national television broadcast of the Penn-Dartmouth matchup on the VERSUS network, Penn gained its third nationally televised appearance in its last seven games. Prior to last Saturday, the Quakers were featured on VERSUS against Brown on Nov. 1 last season and on ESPNU the following week at Princeton on Nov. 7. Penn went 2-1 in those three games. Columbia is last in the FCS in tackles for loss and 98th in the nation in sacks. A plethora of running backs. Penn has many options and will use all of them. Bradford Blackmon at wideout, running back, taking direct snaps and returning kicks. LB Jake Lewko make a play. He s had 10 or more tackles in three of the first four games. Owen Thomas with a sack. It ll be tough to bring down Olawale, but he has one in every game thus far. About the Lions: The Lions are off to their best start in the past decade behind a 38-0 trouncing of Princeton in New Jersey two weeks ago. They pulled off another impressive road win at Fordham, posting 40 points in the season opener. Columbia has lost its only home game thus far to Central Connecticut State, 22-13, and fell by three last week to Lafayette a team Penn also lost to in Easton, Pa., by three points. THE OFFENSE: It s been nearly impossible for opposing defenses to stop the Lions. They lead the Ivy League with an average of 28 ppg and are second in the league in rushing average. They don t turn the ball over much either, ranking fourth in the nation in turnover margin at plus-8. They have yet to throw an interception. Quarterback M.A. Olawale has already thrown for 670 yards, rushed for 250 yards and has 10 touchdowns. Running back Ray Rangel leads the league in rushing, averaging 100 yards per game with three touchdowns. Wide Receiver Austin Knowlin has 235 yards and three touchdowns while fellow receiver Andrew Kennedy has added two scores. The offensive accolades go on for the Lions. THE DEFENSE: Ranking dead last in the nation in tackles for loss, and second to last in the Ivy League in passing defense and total defense, Columbia will be happy to see a banged-up Penn offense. They have allowed nearly 440 yards of offense and 200 yards rushing per game. However, they have been able to take the ball away from opponents with seven interceptions. Adam Mehrer leads the team with 45 tackles. THE SPECIAL TEAMS: Austin Knowlin is a dangerous return man, ranking 11th in the country in kick returns with an average of 27.4 and a long of 57. He ll also return punts. Freshman Michael Williamson has already won Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors once, averaging 39.5 yards per punt with a long of 51. Greg Guttas has missed one of 12 PAT s and has made one of his three field goal attempts. THE HEAD COACH: Wilson is in his fourth year at Columbia and has the Lions off to their best start since going 3-1 in the first four games of his first season (2006). The Lions have equaled their win total from a season ago and may equal their win total from 2007 and 2008 combined with a win Saturday over Penn. Last Time Out: Oct. 18, 2008 at Penn PHILADELPHIA When it was all totaled up, Penn s three scoring drives on the day had covered 17 yards on 15 plays, but they pulled out a win at Franklin Field. Things were not secured until late when the Lions lost the ball in Penn territory on another interception, Penn s fifth forced turnover of the day. Penn s defense led to almost all of the team s scoring. *Penn s first points came on a 37-yard field goal by Andrew Samson, after an interception by senior Britton Ertman, who returned the pick to the Lions 20-yard line. *Penn s second score, a 31-yard Samson field goal, came after the defense forced a fumble that was recovered by senior Jay Colabella at the Columbia 18-yard line. *Penn s only touchdown came when another Lions fumble was recovered by Ertman and returned to the Columbia 2-yard line. *Penn s final points came on a safety, when Columbia was pinned deep in its territory and a bad snap on a punt went out of the end zone. Penn s first points came early, as Ertman interception Columbia quarterback Shane Kelly on just the second play of the game. The Quakers led before the contest was five minutes old. The Lions responded, as Kelly engineered an eight-play drive that went 42 yards and finished with a 38-yard Jon Rocholl field goal. However, on consecutive drives, Penn s defense got to the Lions quarterback and forced costly turnovers on both. The first was recovered by Colabella and led to Samson s field goal just four plays later, and the second came when Ertman scooped up a misfired option toss at the 29-yard line and nearly put it in the end zone before being dragged down by Zack Kourouma. Penn needed three plays to get those last two yards, before Bradford Blackmon finally pushed it in up the middle and made it Once again, Columbia got its act together and drove the field, this time for a touchdown. The drive was runheavy and featured Ray Rangel and a 30-yard scramble by Kelly. The score came when Kelly found Austin Knowlin from six yards out. As it turned out, that would be all the scoring the Lions would have in the game, thanks to Penn s stout defense Final Penn Columbia Scoring Summary: 1st - 10:43 PENN - Samson, Andrew 37 yd field goal, :29, COL 0 - PENN 3 06:56 COL - Rocholl, Jon 38 yd field goal, :39, COL 3 - PENN 3 2nd - 10:51 PENN - Samson, Andrew 31 yd field goal, 4-5 1:13, COL 3 - PENN 6 08:51 PENN - Blackmon, Brad 1 yd run (Samson, Andrew kick), 3-2 1:19, COL 3 - PENN 13 02:09 COL - Knowlin, Austin 6 yd pass from Kelly, Shane (Rocholl, Jon kick), :10, COL 10 - PENN 13 3rd - 07:57 PENN - TM safety,, COL 10 - PENN 15 RUSHING: Columbia-Rangel, Ray 19-79; Kelly, Shane 8-51; Davis, Jordan 3-16; Knowlin, Austin 1-16; Lenz, Nathan 3-13; Stephens, Mike 1-0; Rocholl, Jon 1-minus 25. It was the first Ivy title in program history in the league s fourth season. Since then, the Quakers have claimed 12 titles, including six in the Al Bagnoli era. Exactly 50 years ago today... Penn won its fourth straight to open the season and third in a row against an Ivy opponent, allowing points for the first time that season in a 36-9 win over Brown at Franklin Field. After Brown took the lead on an early first period safety, Fred Doelling scampered 25 and center John Gillin short-circuited a Brown pass for another TD to give Penn a 14-2 first half lead. In the final half, George Koval passed 5 to Pete Schantz for one TD, Larry Purdy to Jon Greenawalt for 24 yards and another TD before Koval closed out the scoring by going over himself from the 2. - Bob Paul, Penn Sports Publicist, 1960

18 Penn Football Game Notes Oct. 17, 2009 at Columbia Game 1 - #2 Villanova at Penn Sept. 19, Franklin Field 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Villanova Penn PHILADELPHIA As inauspicious beginnings go, you would be hard-pressed to top the first play of Penn s 2009 football campaign: the Quakers kicked off to Villanova s Matt Szczur, and he took the return 87 yards for a touchdown. The play took all of 14 seconds. After that, though, Penn gave the second-ranked team in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS, formerly I-AA) all it could handle Saturday night at Franklin Field. Unfortunately, while the defense was flexing its collective muscles, the offense could not muster enough to overcome that first play. In the end, the Wildcats escaped the city limits and returned to the Main Line with a 14-3 victory. Villanova may have been playing its third game of the season, but the Cats looked out of sorts throughout the game thanks to Penn s stout D. The Quakers held Nova to just 187 yards of total offense on 50 plays, an average of only 3.7 per play. The defensive line and linebackers seemed to live in the Villanova backfield, led by Jake Lewko (career-high 13 tackles), benefiting from tight coverage by the secondary whenever Nova QB Chris Whitney -- and then Antwon Young -- looked to throw. Unfortunately for Penn fans, the same could be said on when the units switched up. Penn ran 62 plays in the game, and gained just 239 yards (a 3.9 average). While the Quakers had much more success through the air -- Keiffer Garton was 19-of-27 for 185 yards -- they seldom knocked on the door against a Nova defense that came up with six sacks. The tone for this contest was set after Szczur s kickoff return. Penn went threeand-out, gaining eight yards, and then Villanova did the same (gaining nine yards). The Quakers second possession ended after six plays and 25 yards, and the Wildcats second outing went five plays and 12 yards. Clearly, both teams were digging in. Penn s third possession gave the home side plenty to chew on; the Quakers ran 14 plays and covered 66 yards, getting as close as Villanova s 5-yard line. However, they could only settle for a field goal, and All-America candidate Andrew Samson was true on the 22-yarder. Momentum stayed with Penn when Jonathan Moore picked off Whitney at the Penn 28 on the first play of the ensuing drive -- his second in as many games, dating back to last season -- but the Quakers could only get to the Wildcats 42-yard line before punting. Villanova then put together its best drive of the first half, going 57 yards over 11 plays and eating up almost six minutes of clock. However, Penn caught a break when Nick Yako s 40-yard field goal fell wide right. Both defenses ratcheted up the intensity in the third quarter. Penn seemed to catch a break when Joe Goniprow forced a Whitney fumble from behind and Zach Heller recovered. However, on the very next play Garton threw into double coverage and Villanova s Ross Ventrone settled under it for the interception. Both teams went three-and-out, before Villanova finally found paydirt with its offensive unit. With Young now at the helm, the Wildcats marched 78 yards in 10 plays, scoring when Young found Brandyn Harvey in the right corner for a diving catch. Head coach Al Bagnoli inserted Billy Ragone into the quarterback spot for one possession, but his first pass of the night was picked by Fred Maldonado near midfield. Garton was under center the remainder of the game and led a 56-yard drive to start the fourth quarter that advanced to the Villanova 19-yard line. After trailing 17-0 in the second quarter, the University of Pennsylvania football team came back to tie the game and force overtime with Lafayette Saturday during a steady rain at Fisher Stadium. However, the Leopards prevailed, 20-17, with a game-winning field goal in the first overtime. Penn had the ball first in the overtime session, but were unable to move the ball on three successive plays and were forced to settle for a long field goal attempt. Junior Andrew Samson had enough distance in the rain, but it was wide left. Lafayette gained 16 yards on the first three plays of the overtime possession before being held to a field goal. Davis Rodriguez then split the uprights on a 28-yard field goal, leading to a sideline-clearing celebration by the Leopards. Junior Keiffer Garton and senior Kyle Olson shared quarterback duties in the first half, but it was Olson and freshman running back Lyle Marsh who led the second half comeback. The duo led the Quakers to touchdowns on the first two drives of the half to fully erase a 17-3 halftime deficit. On Penn s opening drive in the second half, Marsh ran the ball four straight times, taking Penn from its own 36 to the Lafayette six-yard line. On second-and-goal, Olson connected with senior Tyler Fisher in the middle of the end zone for his first career touchdown pass. After forcing another Lafayette punt, Olson marched the Quakers 60 yards into the end zone in six plays. The senior quarterback was 3-for-3 on the drive for 51 yards. The final pass found junior Bradford Blackmon streaking down the far sideline. Blackmon leaped in the air and outreached the defender to haul in the 21-yard touchdown and tie the game at with 5:22 left in the third. Both teams penetrated deep into opposing territory on their ensuing drives, however, each defense came up with big fourth down stops. Both teams then continued to trade punts - which included a quick punt by Olson that pinned Lafayette at the two-yard line. Lafayette had a chance to win the game after recovering a fumble at the Penn 22. However, Rodriguez missed the 37-yard field goal with 2:32 left in the game. Lafayette got on the scoreboard first as senior quarterback Rob Curley set the tone early. Curley threw a perfectly placed touch pass to a well-covered Mark Layton for a 19-yard touchdown. After the Quakers went three-and-out, the Leopards picked up where they left off. Curley connected with Mitchell Bennett for a 14-0 lead with 10:43 left in the second. Penn drove into Lafayette territory for the first time on the ensuing drive after Fisher returned the kickoff to the 40-yard line. On fourth-and-2 from the Leopards 36-yard line, the Quakers went for the first down and got it. Garton rolled right and found senior Kyle Derham for seven yards. However, the offense was stifled from there and had to settle for a 42-yard field goal attempt that fell short. The missed field goal led to Lafayette s third straight scoring drive. The Leopards went 62 yards in 10 plays to take a 17-0 lead on a 29-yard field goal by Rodriguez with 1:05 to go in the half. Orchestrated by Olson, Penn drove 46 yards in the final 1:05 of the first half to get Samson within field goal range. With the rain coming down, Samson knocked through the 40-yard attempt as the half expired. Olson went 4-for-5 on the drive with the biggest completion being his last - a short pass that sophomore Joe Holder stretched into a 25-yard gain to set up Penn s first points. 20 Penn Football Game Notes Oct. 17, 2009 at Columbia Game 3 - Penn at Dartmouth Oct. 3, Memorial Field 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Penn Dartmouth HANOVER, N.H. Playing in rainy, wet conditions for the second consecutive week, the Penn football team pulled out a win in Hanover, N.H., defeating Dartmouth, 30-24, on VERSUS in the Ivy League opener for both teams. Led by freshman Lyle Marsh s 120 rushing yards, Penn gained 288 yards on the ground which included rushing touchdowns from freshman quarterback Billy Ragone and junior fullback Luke DeLuca. But it was junior Bradford Blackmon who changed the game early in the fourth quarter. Dartmouth had clearly gained momentum after pulling within at the end of the third quarter. On Penn s next possession, the Quakers quickly faced third-andthree from their own 44. With the crowd on its feet, Blackmon went right and took a pitch from Olson, found a hole and turned on the speed. He went 55 yards before being pushed out of bounds at the one-yard line. Fullback Luke DeLuca finished it off from there, rushing for his third career touchdown on the next play. Senior Jonathan Moore, who finished with a career best and team-high eight tackles, intercepted Dartmouth s Alex Jenny on the next possession and the Quakers were never really threatend after that. Senior Andrew Samson knocked in his third field goal of the game - tying a career high - on the ensuing drive for a lead with 1:09 to go. Dartmouth scored with five seconds remaining to bring the Big Green within six points, but Kyle Derham jumped on the Big Green s onside kick to seal the game. It was the Penn special teams unit that struck the first blow. The defense forced a three-and-out on the first Dartmouth possession and on the ensuing punt, the snap flew well over the head of the Big Green punter, Matthew Kelly. When Kelly scooped up the ball and tried to punt, sophomore Jim McGoldrick blocked the kick, chased the ball into the endzone and fell on it for a 7-0 Penn lead two minutes into the contest. Later in the first quarter, the Penn offense got its first points of the day. Six of the seven plays were rushes by either Ragone and Marsh as they accounted for all 54 yards on the drive, capped off by Ragone s first collegiate touchdown - a three-yard rush to the near corner of the end zone. Dartmouth got back to within one possession, 14-10, midway through the second quarter. The Big Green pieced together a 13-play drive. The last play of the 74-yard march was a leaping 12-yard touchdown catch over a Penn defender in the back corner of the endzone. For the second straight game the Quakers added a late first-half field goal, driving 38 yards on 12 plays to set up Samson s 39-yard attempt. The drive lasted 5:47 and took up all but the last 47 seconds of the half, ensuring the lead at intermission. Samson was then called upon early in the second half for his second field goal of the game. Blackmon s 33-yard kick return and a late-hit penalty gave the Red and Blue the ball at the Dartmouth 26-yard line. Samson s 33-yard field goal gave Penn a lead less than two minutes into the half. The 10-point lead stuck until the last play of the third quarter. Two plays after converting a fourth-and-one from the Penn 40, Big Green running back Nick Schwieger scampered 19 yards to pull Dartmouth within three, leading to Blackmon s clutch run. 21 Penn Football Game Notes Oct. 17, 2009 at Columbia Game 4 - Bucknell at Penn Oct. 10, Franklin Field 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Bucknell Penn PHILADELPHIA It took a little while, but the Penn football team was able to establish itself on defense and offense and down pesky Bucknell, The Quakers scored early and looked like they might roll to the win, but it wasn t until midway through the fourth quarter that they found paydirt again as Bucknell held them at bay. With its top three quarterbacks all sidelined with injuries, Penn started with sophomore John Hurley under center, and in his first career start he certainly did not start shaky as he completed his first two passes. However, the Quakers employed a little trickery and used an option with wide receiver Kyle Derham - the ball was picked off by Bucknell s Ahkiel White at the Bison 13. Bucknell went three-and-out, and then Bradford Blackmon returned the Bison punt 24 yards back to the Bucknell 40-yard line. On its second drive, Penn saved the trickeration for the end, capping a nine-play drive with a halfback option that saw Matt Hamscher find Luke DeLuca for a five-yard touchdown pass. The rest of the half was a stalemate, as both defenses were dominant in a 7-0 game. At the break, Penn led Bucknell in yardage just , and the Quaker defense bolstered its numbers with an interception (by Jonathan Moore) and a fumble recovery (by Justyn Williams). The defense stepped up again to start the third, as Josh Powers picked off a C.J. Hopson pass just inside Penn territory and ran it all the way back to Bucknell s 27- yard line. However, three plays yielded just seven yards, and then Andrew Samson was wide left with a 38-yard field goal attempt that kept the score 7-0. The third quarter provided more offensive stagnation on both sides, but in the final minute Bucknell finally got life when they picked off a Hurley pass at the Penn 27-yard line. The Penn defense had been strong all day, though, and this occasion was no different. Although the Bison advanced as far the 15-yard line - its only trip in the red zone all day - all they could muster was a 32-yard field goal from Drew Orth that made the score 7-3. The scoring drive covered seven plays and just 12 yards. Nevertheless, the points seemed to stir the Penn offense. Starting at their own 34, the Quakers need just seven plays to drive all the way to the Bucknell 25-yard line. However, it was there that Hurley threw another pick, this time bouncing off one of his own receivers and into the hands of Rob Gerlach at the 8-yard line. Just as the offense giveth, though, the defense taketh away. On Bucknell s second play of the ensuing drive, Tyler Smith coughed up the ball and Penn s Fred Craig fell on it at the Bison 11. Two plays after that, Blackmon ran in from four yards out and the score was 14-3 with 7:35 left. Penn s defense held Bucknell to a three-and-out on its next drive, then forced a turnover on downs the drive after that. Given the ball on the Bison 38-yard line, and with just a few minutes left in the game, Penn put together a four-play drive that ended with Lyle Marsh scoring a three-yard rushing touchdown. Penn gained 264 yards on the day and held Bucknell to 196 (and an average of 2.8 yards per play on the day). Hurley ended the game with 14 completions on 27 attempts for 148 yards. David Wurst and Matt Tuten had three catches each, while five others caught two balls and nine players snared passes in all. Defensively, Jake Lewko led the way with 11 tackles, and the Quakers came up with three sacks and five tackles for loss in addition to forcing four turnovers.
