After that, we ask that you refer to us simply as Penn. We ask that you refrain from calling us Pennsylvania at any time. Thanks for your cooperation! Al Bagnoli George A. Munger Head Coach of Football In the case of the George A. Munger Head Coach of Football Al Bagnoli, the numbers don t lie. As the second-winningest active coach in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), the winningest active coach in the Ivy League, the only Ivy coach to ever capture seven outright titles, the longest tenured coach in Penn s 133-year football history and as one of just five coaches in FCS history to record 200 career wins, Bagnoli is clearly one of the living legends in his sport. It will be a familiar feeling for head coach Al Bagnoli and the Quakers heading into the 2010 season. They are the defending Ivy League champions for the seventh time in his tenure, and by earning the title outright with an undefeated Ivy campaign last year, Bagnoli can now lay claim to more outright titles than any other program has in its entire history. Bagnoli, who has had just one losing season in 18 years at Penn, guided the 2009 Quakers through some extraordinary adversity early in the year. Penn lost its top three quarterbacks and had to start its fourth-string signal-caller in Week 4. The Quakers won that game, and each of its last eight. The success was mostly due to the defense which finished the year ranked No. 1 in the nation and boasted the co-ivy League player of the year in All-American linebacker Jake Lewko. The Red and Blue were also the most disciplined team in all of Division I football in 2009, finishing with fewer penalties and penalty yards than any other team, edging out FBS-leader Navy. Bagnoli currently stands at 208 career wins, which are oppossed by just 75 losses. His career winning percentage (73.5%) is second among active head coaches. In the final week of the 2008 campaign, the Quakers captured the 200th career win in Bagnoli s illustrious career. There have been only four other FCS coaches in NCAA history to have accomplished that feat. The Central Connecticut State alumnus has accumulated 122 of those wins at Penn, just three away from becoming the winningest coach in Penn history. 6 Ray Priore Defensive Coordinator 24th Season 2010 Penn Football Spring Prospectus 2010 Coaching Staff Jon McLaughlin Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line Fifth Season With a 2009 title ring to add to his collection, Ray Priore has now been a part of eight Ivy League Championships. He is the veteran of the Red and Blue coaching staff as he enters his 24th year on the Quakers sideline in The 2009 season marked his 12th season as Penn s defensive coordinator and secondaries coach, and his fifth as the associate head coach. In 2009, Priore finished as runner-up for National Coordinator of the Year award after guiding Penn s defense to the top of the FCS. How dominant were the Quakers? *The Quakers finished the season ranked No. 1 in the nation in total defense, allowing just points per game. *They were also tops in the country in scoring defense as the only team in the country that gave up less than 10 points per game (9.6). *It also marked the fewest points allowed by a Penn defense in a 10-game season since *The Quakers, who also led the Ivy League in every major defensive category, were second in the FCS in rushing defense and pass efficiency defense. In all, Penn finished in the top 10 in the nation in eight defensive categories. Larry Woods Quarterbacks Coach 19th Season In 2010, Larry Woods enters his 19th season as Penn s quarterbacks coach. If there had been any doubt to Woods coaching ability after 17 successful seasons, those questions have been convincingly put to rest in the last two years. In 2009, for the second straight season, Penn was forced to use four different quarterbacks after losing three starting signal callers to injury. Despite the injuries, the Quakers won the 2009 Ivy League championship, finishing unbeaten in Ivy play earning Woods his seventh Ivy championship ring. Three different Quaker quarterbacks started and won a game, while Kyle Olson eventually finished the season undefeated as the signal caller (6-0) and went on to earn All-Ivy honors. In 2008, after being forced into action, four different Quakers led the Red and Blue to victory from under center. With the interchangeable quarterbacks, Penn was able to remain in contention for the Ivy title until the final quarter of the final game with much thanks to the depth at the quarterback position created by Woods. With 14 years of coaching experience under his belt, Jon McLaughlin enters his fifth season coaching Penn s offensive line and his second season as offensive coordinator. In his first year at the helm of the Red and Blue s offense, Penn finished unbeaten in league play to earn the outright Ivy League title all despite losing three starting quarterbacks to injury. With the fourth-string quarterback starting the fourth week of the season, Penn won that game and every single one thereafter. As the offense returned to full strength, it became increasingly more productive. The Quakers put up a combined 76 points in their last two home games. At season s end, Penn s starting quarterback, running back, tight end and top wide receiver each earned All-Ivy recognition. Also in charge of the offensive line, McLaughlin s front five allowed the fewest sacks in the Ivy League in 2009 and finished third in the Ancient Eight in rushing. Three of his five lineman Joe D Orazio, Greg Van Roten and Luis Ruffolo earned All-Ivy status. Jim Schaefer Defensive Line Coach 19th Season Jim Schaefer has been a fixture on Al Bagnoli s coaching staffs for 29 seasons, first at Union College and now at Penn, where he is second on the Red and Blue coaching staff in years of service with 18. The 2009 season was one of Penn s best from the perspective of the defensive line. As part of the nation s No. 1 ranked defense, the Red and Blue finished atop the Ivy League and seventh in the country with 31 sacks. Led by second-team All-Ivy honoree Owen Thomas, four different Quakers ranked among the top 10 in the Ivy League in sacks. With much thanks to the front line, Penn also finished atop the Ancient Eight and second in the nation against the run. Joe Goniprow, who earned preseason All-America recognition, was a first-team All-Ivy selection. 6

7 Steven Downs Running Backs Coach 12th Season 2010 Penn Football Spring Prospectus 2010 Coaching Staff Rick Ulrich Wide Receivers Coach 10th Season Steven Downs enters his 12th season as the Quakers running backs coach. Since he joined the staff in 1999, at least one Quakers running back has received All-Ivy honors in each of his 11 seasons. That list includes five first-team distinctions and two former NFL players. With an All-Ivy honoree returning to the backfield in 2009, it looked like a lock for yet another All-Ivy running back for the Quakers. But when Michael DiMaggio was hampered from an injury all season, freshman Lyle Marsh stepped up to the challenge. Marsh averaged 4.7 yards per carry tied for the sixth-best season in the program s 133-year history. He finished fifth in the league in rushing and earned second-team All-Ivy recognition. In all, Penn has had an All-Ivy running back for each of the past 15 years. Meanwhile, fullback Luke DeLuca was also named to the all-league second team as he led the team with five touchdowns and finished seventh in the Ancient Eight in scoring. Rich Ulrich enters the fifth year of his second tenure at Penn as the wide receivers coach and special teams coordinator. He previously coached the Quakers from in the same capacity. Ulrich brought more than 20 years of coaching experience back to Penn, including stints at Albany, Princeton, Fordham, Army, Georgetown, Trinity and Ursinus. Though the Quakers were shuffling quarterbacks throughout the 2009 season due to injuries, the wide receiver position remained productively consistent. Kyle Derham earned All- Ivy status as he led the team in catches, receiving yards and touchdown receptions. But it was the depth created at the position that resulted in Penn s success. Three Quakers caught 24 or more passes and seven different players had at least 10 receptions. There were also eight different members of the Red and Blue that had at least one touchdown catch. Jon Dupont Cornerbacks Coach Fifth Season Jon Dupont enters his fifth season with the Quakers as the cornerbacks coach and assistant secondary coach. For the second straight season, Dupont s secondary ranked tops in the Ivy League in passing defense (seventh in the nation) in In addition to leading the FCS in total defense and scoring defense, the Quakers also ranked first in the Ancient Eight in pass efficiency defense and turnover margin. Dupont s defensive backfield produced two first-team All-Ivy recipients in Jonathan Moore and Chris Wynn, while Kevin Gray added a second-team honor. Anchoring the top ranked defense in the nation, Moore and Wynn ranked among the top 10 in the Ivy League in passes defended, while Moore finished third in the league in interceptions. Mark Fabish Tight Ends Coach Second Season Former Penn football standout Mark Fabish, C 97, begins his second season as the Quakers tight ends coach in After winning two Ivy titles as a player at Penn (1993, 1994), Fabish helped guide the Quakers to an Ivy championship in his first season. When Penn s starting tight end went out with an injury midway through the 2009 campaign, Fabish replaced him with Luke Nawrocki, who went on to earn All- Ivy honorable mention status despite starting just five games. Nawrocki was sixth on the team in receptions and second in touchdowns. The tight ends were also a part of the Ancient Eight s thirdbest rushing attack in 2009 and combined with the offensive line to allow the fewest sacks in the Ivy League.

10 2009 Championship Season in Review No. 24 in the national polls. As Penn entered the Ivy League opener at Dartmouth, it was clear that the non-conference schedule was tough. At 0-2, and having never led at any point in the season, the Quakers were without their opening-day starting quarterback as they embarked upon their longest road trip of the year. When the game began, it actually got worse freshman quarterback Billy Ragone suffered a season-ending injury, and senior quarterback Kyle Olson s arm injury left the Red and Blue without a quarterback able to throw the ball. Harvard ball. Fourth-and-goal at the Penn 1-yard line. 2:49 left on the clock. Crimson quarterback Collie Winters keeps the ball and moves to his left. He is met by one of the Quakers senior captains, Chris Wynn, just before the goalline and falls in the same spot. Cue the cigar-filled celebration the 2009 Penn Quakers are Ivy League champions. One play can hardly define an entire season a championship season, no less but this was as close to a defining moment as any for the 2009 Penn Football team. The Quakers were reliant on their defense throughout a year in which the Red and Blue watched their starting, backup and third-string quarterbacks all fall to injury within the first three weeks of the season. So it was only fitting for the defense the best in the entire country in 2009 to come up with a goal-line stand against the best offense in the Ivy League to all but clinch the program s 14th Ivy League championship. And to think, there may have been no other season in Penn s 133-year history that started in such unfavorable fashion in the first game, on the first play, Penn kicked off to Villanova s Matt Szczur and he returned it for a touchdown. Sixteen seconds into the year, Penn trailed 7-0. The Red and Blue played well throughout the rest of the night, and were down just 7-3 midway through the third quarter to the No. 2-ranked team in the nation. However, the cross-town rivals were impressive, and hung on to beat the Quakers 14-3 at Franklin Field that night. Three months later, the Wildcats would win the FCS national championship. Without knowing the success that the Wildcats would have, the Quakers took little solace from the loss. The same was true a week later, when a slow start allowed Lafayette to jump out to a 17-0 first-half lead in Easton, Pa. With the rain falling an element that would become all too familiar in 2009 and starting quarterback Keiffer Garton out due to injury, Penn still rallied to tie the game by the middle of the third quarter, only to fall in overtime. Like Villanova, Lafayette would go on to a successful campaign and finish the year ranked For this team, none of it seemed to matter but then, for a group of champions, that s to be expected. And that s exactly where the 2009 Quakers were headed. So even when Dartmouth closed to within on the final play of the third quarter, Penn calmly marched down the field, scored a touchdown, and never looked back. Now it was sophomore quarterback John Hurley who had surfaced atop the depth chart. Having never taken a snap as a collegiate quarterback, Hurley started against Bucknell at Franklin Field. And he won one of three different quarterbacks to start and win a game for Penn in It was the story within the championship story. When called upon, each member of this team and each unit was always ready to do its part. Against Bucknell, the defense kept the pressure off the Quakers new signal-caller, holding the Bison to a field goal, and Hurley did his, managing the offense to 21 points. In Week 5, with Garton back in the lineup, Penn found itself trailing Columbia, 13-7 in the second quarter. It would be the last time Penn trailed at any point for the rest of the season, and it lasted just 11 plays. The Red and Blue took the lead when Garton connected with sophomore running back Matt Hamscher, then blew away the Lions in the second half. After that Lions score in the second quarter at Wien Stadium, the Penn defense didn t allow another point for the next 11 quarters (and an overtime). That covered a span of 21 days between points and more than 183 minutes of game time. The effort allowed the Quakers to get by Yale without scoring an offensive touchdown they won 9-0 behind sophomore defensive lineman Jared Sholly s first career interception and touchdown. And the defense carried the Quakers again the next week. At kickoff, each member of the Quakers entered the NCAA record book. Penn became the first team in the history of college football to play in 1,300 games. For a program that ended the 2009 season just one win shy of its 800th all-time, Penn celebrated the milestone in typical fashion with a win. On the road against the top offensive team in the Ivy League (needless to say, they were not the top-ranked team after the game), Penn didn t allow the Bears offense to get on the scoreboard. Brown scored on an interception return, ultimately sending the game into overtime. For a program that hadn t won an overtime game in more than five years and had set an NCAA record for overtime losses in a season, Penn made it look easy. The offense was in the end zone in three plays, and the defense was impenetrable as usual. The overtime win officially erased any doubts that 10

11 2009 Championship Season in Review the 2009 squad would succumb to the misfortunes that the program had suffered in recent years. Penn s run continued when Penn ran over archrival Princeton on Homecoming. The Quakers led 35-7 by the end of the third quarter, and when Wynn returned an interception 60 yards for his first career defensive touchdown, they had sealed their third-largest margin of victory the Tigers. The momentum from the blowout win led right into the undefeated showdown at Harvard. Though one play may not be able to define an entire team or season, in this case, one phrase can: Ivy League champions. Like the 13 teams to accomplish the feat previously, the 2009 team will stand immortalized in Penn Football lore the team picture hanging off the wall in Weightman Hall, the 1,300th game ball perched inside the Jack Lefort Football Complex trophy case, and this collection of young men now included among the conversation of Penn s great teams. Certainly, this 2009 team has forever left its mark on the most historic program in college football. On that rainy day in Cambridge, the Quakers played a game that epitomized the season. All three phases came up big when it was needed the defense held shut out Harvard in the first half, the special teams blocked a punt, and the offense put up 17 points before intermission. It all led to the decisive goal-line stand in the waning minutes. When the scoreboard clock flashed all zeros and a share of the title was secured, Penn was just one win away from setting an Ivy League record with its 11th outright title. Penn made it look easy in wrapping up an undefeated Ivy campaign, the fifth in program history (yet another league record). The Red and Blue dominated the Big Red from the start. The offense scored 34 points giving them a combined 76 in the final two home games and the defense, fittingly, posted its second shutout of the year. After the fans rushed onto Franklin Field, the Quakers rightfully hoisted the Ivy trophy. Though bringing the trophy back to West Philadelphia after six years was clearly the ultimate goal and highlight, the individual honors rolled in at the end of the year. Eighteen Quakers were named All-Ivy, and senior linebacker Jake Lewko was named Co-Ivy League MVP in addition to earning All-America honors. Lewko was also honored as the FCS College Player of the Year by the Brooks-Irvine Memorial Football Club, while senior defensive back Jon Moore was named an ECAC All-Star.
