Recognized by the NCAA as the oldest stadium in the nation still operating for football games, the stadium hosts not only Penn football and the world-famous Penn Relays, but the Quakers field hockey, sprint football, lacrosse, and track & field teams. The Oldest Collegiate Football Stadium Est The First Just how old is Franklin Field? Consider that when the oldest ballpark in professional baseball, Fenway Park, opened in 1912, Franklin Field was already 17 years old. The stadium is opened for the Penn Relays, and football plays its first game there on Oct. 1, 1895, a 40-0 win over Swarthmore. 6 Army defeated Navy by a score of 17-5 at Franklin Field on Dec. 2, 1899 in the first neutral-site game ever played between the two storied rivals. In 1903, in response to inadequate seating for big games, wooden stands in the stadium were replaced by a brick horseshoe, seating 20,000 fans and making Franklin Field the first permanent horseshoe college stadium.

8 U N I V E R S I T Y O F P E N N S Y L V A N I A Penn Football and the Ivy League While football is where it started, the Ivy League entering its 53rd academic year of existence is nationally recognized for its level of success absent of athletic scholarships while rigorously maintaining its self-imposed high academic standards. The Ivy League has demonstrated a rare willingness and ability, given the current national pressures on intercollegiate success, to abide by these rules and still compete successfully in Division I. The designation Ivy League is credited to Caswell Adams of the New York Tribune in The tag, premature of any formal agreement, was immediately adopted by the press as a foreshadowing of an Eastern Football League which, at the time, was big news to everyone except the athletic directors involved. For years, the Ivy members already had been allied in leagues in basketball, ice hockey, baseball and swimming. Further common competition was found in the Heptagonal Games Association, which included Army and Navy, in the sports of baseball, track and field and swimming. Through these other scheduling arrangements, the Ivy athletic directors were used to dealing with each other in matters of administration or the exchange of calculated confidences. As a result of these dealings, and through extensive presidential meetings and discussions, the first Ivy Group Agreement, addressing only football, was signed in While the 1945 statement did not address any scheduling issues, it did affirm the observance at the eight institutions of common practices in academic standards, eligibility requirements and the administration of financial aid for athletes. (These tenets are what still bind the Ivies together today and all continue to be based on the desire to secure competition with others having like philosophies.). In February 1954, what is more commonly accepted as the founding date for the Ivy League, the Ivy Group Agreement was reissued to extend its philosophical jurisdiction to all sports and to foster, insofar as possible, intra-group competition. In layman s terms, that meant a complete round-robin schedule in football, beginning with the 1956 season. Such an agreement assuring seven spots on an eight-to-ten-game schedule to Ivy opponents required numerous concessions from each institution and marked a high point in intercollegiate cooperation. The basic intent of the original Ivy agreement was to improve and foster intercollegiate athletics while keeping the emphasis on such competition in harmony with the educational purpose of the institutions. 10 U N I V E R S I T Y O F P E N N S Y L V A N I A Penn Football Facilities The Jack LeFort Football Office Complex In the summers of 2006 and 2007, the Penn football offices underwent a major renovation thanks to a gift from Robert LeFort in honor of his father, Jack LeFort, W 48. The new office complex, which included renovating conference rooms, is located in historic Weightman Hall and gives improved working space to all of the program s coaches and support staff. In addition, a large lounge was created with views overlooking Franklin Field. Space was also created to showcase Penn s football history, including photo displays of each Ivy League championship team. Future Facilities: George A. Weiss Pavilion - Coming in March 2010! The Weiss Pavilion will house a 21,000 square foot weight room that will be reserved exclusively for Penn athletes. Also included is a 7,600-square foot fitness center and a 4,600-square foot athletic training center. Below is an artist rendering of the future weight room s ground level (far left) and a rendering of the Pavilion s exterior when it is completed (center). Construction began in the spring of 2009 and is on pace to be completed by March The below picture of the facility s progression (far right) is from April For more information on the George A. 13 F O O T B A L L 13-Time Ivy League Champions 1959 Ivy League Champions 7-1-1, 6-1 Ivy WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS! The 2009 season marks the 50th anniversary since Penn captured its first ever Ancient Eight crown in the League s fourth year of existence. What a team! - Fred Doelling ( ) Trailing 13-0 at the half, Barney Berlinger hauls in a 25-yard touchdown pass from George Koval to give the Quakers a lead over Cornell in the fourth quarter. I was not only impressed with the athletic abilities of the 1959 team, but man to man, they excelled in their relationships, and they became a team to be proud of. This was a great achievement and one that will always be a part of my memory. - Assistant Coach Bernie Lemonick ( ) 13

In 1982, we shared the Ivy title with Dartmouth and Harvard. In 1983, we shared with Harvard. So, it was only fitting that we would play Harvard for the outright championship in We had 38,000 fans at Franklin Field and won It was the perfect ending to our four-year commitment to turn the program around and in many ways re-established a standard of football excellence that continues today. - Tim Chambers ( ) 1985 Ivy League Champions 7-2-1, 6-1 Ivy 9.21 at Cornell W Army L at Columbia W Brown W at Davidson W at Yale W Princeton W at Colgate T at Harvard L Dartmouth W I m leaving. I m not sure our players realize some of the historical things that have happened. I can t say enough about how hard it is to have one unbeaten season. It s something few teams ever do. So (a second straight undefeated season) is just remarkable. We know that sooner or later, it s going to end. That s inevitable. But right now, it s going to be later.
