In the Penn single-match digs category, Shepherd holds the top four spots and five of the top Shepherd was one of only two Ivy League athletes to earn All-America accolades, ccolad ccolades, ades es, joining joi ing jo g for the Quakers. Kenneth L. Gross, W 63, was one of the founding members of the Volleyball Board, and has generously given to the program for the past three decades. Recently, Ken created the Head Coach of Women s Volleyball Endowment Fund in honor of his mother, Elleanor Gross. At halftime of Penn s Oct. 27 match against Dartmouth at the Palestra, head coach Kerry Carr presented Ken with a Penn volleyball jersey signed by the entire 2012 team and coaching staff. Carr, who just completed her 16th season at the helm and is the winningest coach in program history, is now known as the Kenneth L. Gross Head Coach of Volleyball. Following the annual Red vs. Blue Fo Intrasquad meet on Dec. 7, Gymnastics In head coach John Ceralde and his h title team received their championship c rings for the second consecutive co year. The Quakers repeated as Ivy Classic champions h last season and added an ECAC championship in addition to a few outstanding individual performances at the NCAA Regionals and USAG Nationals. In front of a home crowd at the Palestra last season, Penn earned its third ECAC title in program history with the second-best team score ( ) in school history. Last year s seniors made the trip back and received their rings with the rest of the squad.

5 C ompliance orner The rules and regulations governing intercollegiate athletics are always being revised and updated. For the latest rules or interpretations as to what is or is not permissible, please contact the DRIA Compliance staff at or INTERVIEWING PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETES The University recently introduced a revamped interview program for prospective students. The former Secondary Schools Committee has transitioned into the Penn Alumni Interview Program with the objective of offering an interview to every er student who applies as a prospective undergraduate. To meet this goal, the Penn Alumni Interview Program is actively seeking new alumni members to conduct these interviews. Athletics alumni have expressed interest in helping Penn Athletics recruit studentathletes. While NCAA rules continue to restrict athletic recruitment to Penn coaches who are certified by the NCAA, there remains the exception that allows members of Penn s Alumni Interview Program to have contact (face-to-face) with prospective student-athletes. The following is an excerpt from the Ivy League s Alumni Rules Summary pertaining to Prospects. All recruiting of prospective student-athletes must be done by institutional staff members. NCAA RULE: WHO IS A "PROSPECT"? A "prospect" is any student who has started classes for the ninth grade. This means that recruiting any student who has started classes for the ninth grade is subject to NCAA rules. NCAA RULE: CONTACTING PROSPECTS Representatives of an institution's athletic interests are prohibited from having any contact with prospective student-athletes. Interpretation: You may not have contact with a prospect or his or her parents, on or off campus, in person, by telephone or in writing. One Limited Exception: Student-athletes do not have to be treated differently than other applicants in the admissions process. If you are a member of your institution's Alumni Schools Committee and are assigned to interview students who are also athletes you may contact the student for these purposes, but for these purposes only! Alumni Schools Committee members may not have contact with prospects whom they are not assigned to interview. Junior Alyssa Baron became the 19th Penn women s basketball player to reach 1,000 career points in dramatic fashion on Nov. 30. Baron s milestone basket was a three-pointer that gave the Quakers a late second-half lead they never relinquished en route to the team s first Big 5 win in nearly two years, over La Salle at The Palestra. Baron is the third-fastest Quaker to reach 1,000 career points (60 games) and the first since Carrie Biemer C 08 topped the landmark in A two-time Ivy scoring champion, Baron became the first freshman in Ivy history to lead the league in scoring. Only Penn s all-time leading scorer (man or woman), Diana Caramanico W 01 LPS 11, (48 games) and Mandy West C 00 (52 games) were faster to 1,000 career points. The best way for you to support our athletic recruiting efforts is to provide our coaches with information about potential recruits in your community. Simply phone or a member of the desired coaching staff and then, let the coaches do the recruiting. But if you want more involvement helping Penn to matriculate outstanding students (some of whom will be contributors to our athletic success), I encourage you to consider becoming a member of Penn s Alumni Interview Program. Just remember, as a member of the interview program, it is still not permissible for you to engage in athletic recruitment. The NCAA defines athletic recruitment as any solicitation of a prospective student-athlete or a prospective student-athlete s relatives (or legal guardians) by an institutional staff member or by a representative of the institution s athletics interests for the purpose of securing the prospects enrollment and ultimate participation in the institution s intercollegiate athletics program. 6 The Penn-Villanova men s basketball game on Dec. 8 had plenty of action and not just when the teams were on the floor playing! During one of the first-half timeouts, the athletic department honored Henry Kell Yang C 72 for his contribution, which allowed for the scoreboard at the West end of the Palestra. In addition to showing the time and score for the games, the digital board allows fans to see the point and foul totals for each player on the floor during the game, and it also has a video element that links up with the Alan J. Aufzien Video Board at the other end of the building. At intermission, Penn paid homage to the late Dick Harter, who passed away in March. Harter s wife, Mari, was joined by athletic director Steve Bilsky W 71 and several of his former basketball teammates during a halftime ceremony honoring the former Quaker. Also a player at Penn from , Harter was the program s head coach from to , leading arguably the greatest team in program history in his final season. Harter won his last 44 regular-season games as Penn s head coach, as well as his final 32 games played at The Palestra. Steve Dolan Named Director of Track & Field/Cross Country and longtime assistant Tony Tenisci promoted as newest Betty J. Costanza Head Coach of Women s Track & Field. Steve Dolan was announced as Now in his 27th season at Penn, Director of Track & Field/Cross Tony Tenisci was named the Betty Country on August 1. In this J. Costanza Head Coach of Women s position, Dolan oversees all aspects Track and Field on Nov. 2. Tenisci of the men s and women s track & becomes just the third head coach in field and cross country programs. A program history. A few of Tenisci s few of Dolan s coaching highlights: coaching highlights: Dolan spent the last eight years at Princeton where he served as the head men s cross country coach and assistant men s track coach. He coached Donn Cabral to an eighth-place finish in the steeplechase at the 2012 London Olympic Games, and guided Cabral to an NCAA title in the steeplechase setting the American college record. He guided 21 student-athletes to All-America awards, and coached 32 Ivy League individual champions. Four-time NCAA Regional Coach of the Year at Princeton and 12-time Division III Regional Coach of the Year as the head of the track & cross country programs at TCNJ. In the past decade, Tenisci has coached four individuals in six different events to seven Heptagonal championships. Tenisci is known as the creator of women s hammer throwing in America. Through his efforts, this event was created and developed into its current form. Many of his student-athletes have competed at the Senior American National Championships and the Olympic Trials. Tenisci was a four-time NCAA All-American in the hammer throw at Washington State and is a former Canadian national record holder in the hammer (221-3).

With a recent addition of eight new players to the roster one senior, one sophomore and six freshmen the Quakers are stronger than ever. They went in the fall with only four goals scored against them, thanks to freshman goalie, Jessie Hasson. The team qualified for the regional tournament in November, and subsequently secured themselves a spot at Nationals which were played November 14 in Memphis, Tenn. The team won two of three games losing only to reigning champ Missouri. The Penn Men s Rugby Football Club experienced one of its most successful seasons this fall. Penn ended the 2012 campaign with a record and 24 points overall, including an impressive win over perennial rival Columbia. This garnered a second-place finish in the overall Ivy League Division (behind two-time Collegiate Rugby Champions Dartmouth and in front of nationally ranked Brown). Penn earned the second seed for the Ivy Playoffs this spring to compete for the bid to the national championship. Penn is now viewed as a premier rugby institution not only in the Ivy League, but also at the national level. Things became more exciting when players were selected for 7s competition and traveled to Princeton for the Ivy League 7s tournament. An impressive showing, including a nail-biting final against Dartmouth, sent ripples across the rugby community, resulting in one of only 20 national invites for the Collegiate Rugby Championship at PPL Park this summer in Philadelphia. With backing from alumni and administration, Penn will travel for the Invitational Tournament in Las Vegas in February to compete against the best rugby programs in the nation. The spring season looks to be an exciting one three major tournaments, two at the national level, and a host of matches against local rivals.
