BOX SCORE ON PAGE 27 Houston rolled to victory in their lone exhibition contest, a victory over NAIA member Huston- Tillotson University on November 9 at Hofheinz Pavilion. The game was characterized by a ferocious effort from the Houston defense. The Cougars held HTU to just 12 field goals and a 30.0% field goal percentage. UH also forced their opponent into 51 turnovers. Houston held HTU without a point for the first 6:06 of the game, before Thompson sank two free throws to get the Rams in the scoring column. Mariah Mitchell and Alexia Sanders led the Cougars with 13 points each. Alecia Smith added 12 points, while Marche Amerson and Terran Alford notched 10 points each. Smith nearly reached double-double status with nine assists, Sanders came up with eight steals, and Alford pulled in eight boards. The Cougars came up with 38 steals as a team, which would set a Hofheinz Pavilion record had the game been an official contest. Houston s 100-point performance was their first since a win over North Texas on December 5, On the flip side, the 37 points that Houston allowed was the fewest conceded by a Cougar team since a win over Prairie View A&M on December 5, Each of the 11 Cougars who participated in the win scored at least four points. All 11 Cougars made at least two steals, and each player played at least 13 minutes. Both UH basketball teams hit the century mark in their exhibition wins. 3 GAME #1 HOUSTON AT NORTH TEXAS THE SUPER PIT DENTON, TEXAS NOVEMBER 14, 2014 VETERAN CLUB RETURNS FOR HOUSTON Hughey will have an experienced group to work with in , as nine letterwinners and two starters are back for UH. Leading the charge among Houston s returners is junior forward Marche Amerson. The Bryan native led the Cougars and ranked 18th in the American Athletic Conference with 10.4 points per game last season. Amerson scored in double-figures 15 times last season, and she led the club in scoring on 13 occasions. Amerson s best performance came in Houston s AAC Tournament victory over Memphis on March 7, Then a sophomore, Amerson set a career high with 24 points. Senior Demetria Foreman averaged 6.0 points per game last season and led the Cougars with 62 assists. The only fourth-year member of the UH roster is forward Terran Alford. The Oklahoma City, Okla. product scored 0.7 points per game last season and was a two-time Conference USA Freshman of the Week in Junior Alecia Smith put up 5.2 points per game and drained exactly 1.0 three-pointers per game in , which ranked 15th in the American. Junior Jessieka Palmer pulled in 4.4 points and 1.6 rebounds per game last season and hit 21 threepointers, including a 4-for-4 effort against Mississippi State on November 8, Guard Bianca Winslow proved to be a deadly outside shooter over her 17 appearances in her sophomore season, connecting on 43.8% of her three-point attempts. Junior Tyler Gilbert was a low post force last season, blocking 16 shots in just 208 minutes of court time. She averaged 2.8 points per game. After redshirting in , Taylor Gilbert made three appearances last season. She scored four points, all against eventual National Champion UConn, on February 22, 2014 The only true sophomore on the Houston roster in , Alexia Sanders missed the final 21 games last year due to an injury. In 10 appearances, she score 3.9 points per game. A NEW ERA FOR HOUSTON BASKETBALL The regular season debut for head coach Ronald Hughey is Friday, November 14, when the Cougars face North Texas in the first official game of the season. This is Hughey s first collegiate head coaching job. Prior to joining the Cougars, Hughey was a Division I collegiate assistant for 10 seasons, including stops at South Carolina State, South Carolina, UCF, Rutgers, Texas and Florida State. Hughey is a veteran of seven postseason tournaments, including six visits to the NCAA Tournament. At his last stop, Florida State, Hughey helped guide the Seminoles to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament in both and Hughey helped guide UCF to the 2009 Conference USA Tournament Championship. A vaunted recruiter, Hughey helped Florida State and Texas land four recruiting classes that were ranked in the top-15 nationally by ESPN Hoopgurlz. SCOUTING THE MEAN GREEN North Texas was last season, with an 8-8 home record and a 6-10 mark in Conference USA games. Eboniey Jeter led UNT with 26 points in a overtime exhibition win over Southern Arkansas on November 6. Houston is 13-6 all time vs. UNT and won last year s meeting, 66-61, on November 20, Marche Amerson led the Coogs with 15 points in the victory, UH s fifth straight in the series. Four current American Athletic Conference members took part in the Women s NIT last season, and the Cougars will face those teams seven times. UH won one game against an NCAA Tournament team last season, a victory over eventual SWAC champion Prairie View A&M. The Cougars were 1-7 last season against teams that went on to play in the NCAA Tournament. TALENTED INCOMING CLASS JOINS UH ROSTER Houston will feature five newcomers in : one junior college transfer and four true freshmen Garden City CC transfer Sandra Davis has two years of eligibility remaining. Davis averaged 9.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per game as a sophomore at Garden City and earned an honorable mention all-conference selection. Tulsa native Janee Arnold was a scoring dynamo at East Central HS. She was once 35 points in a game and topped double-figures 20 times in her final prep season. Moesha Kinard was rated as a three-star recruit by ESPN Hoopgurlz coming out of New Iberia, La. She averaged 16.4 points per game as a high school senior. McKinney HS product Mariah Mitchell was the District 10-5A Offensive Player of the year as a senior and led her team to the 5A State Tournament Coming to Houston all the way from Gary, Ind., DeJah Joshua averaged 10 points per game as a senior at West Side HS. HOUSTON PICKED 11th IN AMERICAN PRESEASON POLL Houston was selected 11th in the American Athletic Conference Preseason Women s Basketball Coaches Poll, released at Media Day in New York City on October 30. Said head coach Ronald Hughey on UH s preseason rank: I embrace the challenge that comes with being picked 11th in our conference. Our program knows that building championships is a process, and we are looking forward to exceeding expectations this season. Defending NCAA Division I National Champion Connecticut was picked to repeat at American champions. The Huskies received all 100 possible points after going 40-0 last season.
