From the outside, an observer can tell that a practice with Hi-Liner Head Coach Scott Roehrich is filled with the kind of grit that builds tough players. Roehrich is in his 9th year as head coach at Valley City High School, and when asked what defines the program he leads, it seems to be toughness. I hope it s hard-nosed running the football, Roehrich That s what we hope to do this season. Roehrich said he loves the game of football and has a lot of fun coaching. With 40 athletes on the roster in grades 9-12, the Hi-Liners return a lot of experience from last year. We ve got a lot of kids on our top end, Roehrich We lost 4 kids from last year. We re pretty excited about the amount of expe- rience. We re hoping we can rely on that. VCHS plays in the West Region of Class AA. Roehrich said this fall, he expects the offensive line to be a definite strength because of experience. We ve got a lot of experience in the backfield, Roehrich Defensively, Roehrich points to experience again. The defensive line is going to be pretty decent, Roehrich said, adding that the team s speed is another strength. Last year, the team struggled defensively. We couldn t get off the field, Roehrich We d play good 2 downs, and then we d have a tough time getting off the field. Roehrich is assisted by coaches Jim Breckheimer, Danny Hangaard, Aaron Heck, Davy Zinke, and volunteer assistant Ty Allen. Some changes have taken place over the years. Roehrich said the culture is currently focused on individuals, so the team concept needs to be drilled in to the mentality. This is a team sport but the culture right now is about me, Roehrich Football is an anticultural sport. Our culture is so much about me. Football is about what s best for the team and that s tough to overcome. This season, Roehrich hopes his athletes will give their best effort. We re just looking for an exciting season, Roehrich I hope the kids are ready, and we re ready to compete. I just want these guys to give the perfect effort and to be the best team we can be, Roehrich I don t know where that s going to put us at the end of the season, but we can t expect more of them. 2 PAGE B2 Wednesday, August 26, 2015 Falcon Fan Base is Big Strength in Program No matter what is happening on the field, the Maple Valley/Enderlin Falcons have a fan base that keeps on supporting them, according to Head Coach Nathan Hoots. We have a strong fan base that supports their players regardless of how the season is progressing, Hoots Hoots said the strengths of the team lie in the dedicated, hard-working kids in the program. The Falcon Football program is strong, Hoots We don t always have great numbers on the team, but the kids that come out are dedicated and hard working. They don t only strive to be great athletes, but also great young men. I have a great coaching staff. This marks Hoots third year as head coach. The team has a total of 26 athletes involved from grades 9 through 12. Returning players are Jesse Johnson (Sr.) (QB/S), Caid Combs (Sr.) (WR/LB), Jorun Hamre (Sr.) (OL/DL), Peter Lindgren (Jr.) (WR/ LB), and Dustin Kasowski (Soph.) (RB/LB). Offensively, the team returns several key skill position players. Hoots expects the team s offensive production to come from many different players. We will be young up front, but still have a high level of confidence in them to get the job done, Hoots The team begins its second year in a new defensive system. Hoots said the majority of linebackers and secondary are returning with a year of experience in that new system. We re hoping to make a nice leap this year with the comfort level of our returners increasing daily, Hoots Last year, the team finished the season 1-8, but they did mark their first East Region Class AA win. Our goals for this year are to be competitive every Friday night, and if we can stay healthy, compete for a playoff spot, Hoots The mental hurdle of playing in AA has been cleared, so we are looking Sheila Anderson/Times-Record for a big step forward this The Falcon defense return to the field with a year of experience under their belts in playing the new defensive system. season. Here they work on taking down the Bulldogs of Milnor/North Sargent at a recent scrimmage. 3 Wednesday, August 26, 2015 PAGE B3 Central Dakota Ready for Class AA Schedule Central Dakota begins its second year in the Class AA West Region. Head Coach George Straub knows strength of his team lies in the work ethic of his players, and the fact that they believe in one another and their team. The Titans have 31 varsity players, with a total of 7 players returning as seniors. Jayden Grover is the starting quarterback. Jordan Johnson was second team All-Region last year. Nick Muncy returns off of an ACL injury last year and starts as a junior runningback. Sean Perry is a senior transfer student from Mississippi who will play linebacker or tight end. Straub said one of the biggest strengths offensively is having Grover running and throwing the ball. He s a big boy, Straub He s a three-sport athlete. Defensively, the front 7 are bigger and more athletic and will make a difference on the field. The defensive line has a year under their belts and should be ready to play, Straub Last year, the team went 3-6 overall and 2-5 in the region. Our goal this season is to play one game at a time, one play at a time, and end the season above.500, Straub Straub said he keeps a high tempo practice with no walking around. This is to help the athletes understand the importance of working for what they get. It s hard for kids to understand that nothing s handed to you, Straub But they re working their tails off. Straub has experience coaching elementary, junior high and high school football. I do it for the kids, Straub He was previously an assistant under VCHS Coach Davy Zinke. We re going to be ready to play every game and play until the end, Straub We will see what comes out at the end. 4 PAGE B4 Wednesday, August 26, 2015 L-L-M Focuses on Team Building Coach Andy DelaBarre focuses on the big picture as a coach. We focus on building a good football program through the value in the team itself, DelaBarre Each player is part of the puzzle that makes us a team. We want our athletes to be whole in the sense of good character, academics, and an overall excitement for the game of football. DelaBarre said the push is for athletes to be multi-talented both on and off the field. We know that what goes in their lives translates to on the field, DelaBarre This is DelaBarre s fourth year as L-L-M s head coach. The team has 24 players in the program, including 12 who return from last year. DelaBarre said the team s offensive line is the strength they need to establish a ground game. If they can create the lanes for our backs, we will have a chance to balance our run and pass game, DelaBarre From there, we will need to utilize our multiple athletic backs and for them to become playmakers. The team s linebackers and backs possess tremendous athleticism that will help L-L-M against teams that attack the perimeter, according to DelaBarre. As long as we can get lined up and be in the right spots we believe we will be able to make plays, DelaBarre The team finished as Region 1 9-Man champions last year. We do not want to sell ourselves short so we first know that we have a talented region and it will be a challenge, but,our first goal is to go out and compete for another region title, DelaBarre DelaBarre said the role of a coach is to assist youth to help them perform their best, and when they are not performing their best, that s when the coach needs to motivate them. Just as every student learns differently, athletes are motivated differently and it is up to the coach to know what motivates their athletes, DelaBarre I believe that the good coaches are the ones that are willing to adapt their philosophies as time goes and I think you see that with many veteran coaches who have been coaching for years. It is my goal as a coach to be able to still do what I love and help these students athletes become the best they can be on The LaMoure/Litchville-Marion Loboes open their season away at Hankinson on Friday, Aug. 28.
