Outside of its unique name, the town most recently is known for yet another disgusting hazing tragedy in this country. And the tragedy doesn t center upon the assistant coach who has been suspended or the six players allegedly involved in the hazing, which reportedly included sexual contact. And while it s disappointing for team members not involved in the hazing, it doesn t center around them even though their 2016 season has been canceled. Continue to belabor the topic. Get to the point where players are getting annoyed with hearing about it every day This tragedy centers around the 11 freshmen victims, who, as in most hazing cases, seem to be the ones forgotten. According to the media reports, these freshmen are being victimized all over again as they are the subject to ridicule and harassment from other students in Philomath High School. Unfortunately, despite it being 2016, we still live in a world where some athletes, students and even adults view this kind of hazing behavior as horseplay or simply boys being boys. It goes well beyond that. These freshmen were violated and there probably wasn t much they could do about it. If you consider the physical differences between upperclassmen who typically QUICK HITTER Last week, David Polett, head boys coach at Vistamar High School (El Segundo, Calif.), described his offseason training plan for his team and the difference it has made in the preparation of his players. Marshall Cho, the head boys coach at Lake Oswego High School (Ore.), tweeted last week that his program s strength and conditioning program was beginning, and also noted it was nine instigate hazing and the 14-year-olds who receive it, everyone is left wondering, who is protecting these children? Of course, the answer is you. In this specific case, it appears the players were at a camp and the regular coaching staff wasn t on hand. But, the judge (Benton County Judge Locke Williams) presiding over the case for three of the alleged attackers said, It puts the spotlight on the issue of hazing. I m fairly certain this has been going on for a number of years, perhaps even decades. And I m sure it s not unique to Philomath High School, but it needs to stop. So when there is an atmosphere of hazing and potential physical abuse within an athletic program, then it s the job of the head coach to be involved. That begins with speaking to the returning upperclassmen (and potential captains) in your program in the days after the previous season ends. Discuss their new responsibilities. Tell them about hazing cases. Have a real conversation about how what some consider an initiation has ruined lives. Victims may take years, or possibly never, recover. Then, continue to belabor the topic. Get to the point where players are annoyed with hearing about it every day. Stay in their ears. Drive the point home. And, right now is the perfect time to approach freshmen who are new to your school and entering the basketball program. Tell them you don t stand for hazing. Support them by saying there are no repercussions for reporting inappropriate behavior. Tell them you respect them beyond what they can do for you on a basketball court. These kind of tragic events continue to happen across the country. It takes more Michael Austin Editor-in-chief In this issue... How Early Do You Start? weeks prior to the start of the season. So, I m wondering, do you use a preseason strength and conditioning program for your players? If so, when do you start? How many players do you have attend? I know it can t be mandatory, so how do you convince players to attend? Do fall athletes attend or do you want them solely to focus on that sport while in-season? than a preseason meeting, or a seminar, or a guest speaker (all of which are positive actions to take) to break the cycle of hazing. 3 1-4 High Plays Run a lot of perimeter action out of a 1-4 High, then slip a guard backdoor for a highpercentage opportunity Handoffs, High Post Harm Aggressive Defenses Enter the ball at the elbow, then watch the scoring options present themselves as defenders scramble to cover the perimeter, leaving the basket area unoccupied There s a reason I run a lot of 1-4 High plays in this magazine they work. When facing a man defense, a 1-4 High pulls all defenders away from the hoop. Sure, they can sag if they want, but if you have post players capable of knocking down a 15-footer, the defense is at your mercy. The 1-4 High creates ample backdoor scoring opportunities as the defenders become fixated on stopping the perimeter action, especially in today s game where everyone is shooting more 3-pointers than ever. Every once in awhile, have a potential shooter plant a foot as he or she curls toward the ball, then cut hard backdoor. With the ball generally in the hands of a taller post player at the elbow, this becomes an easy pass for a layup. Going deeper than just a typical backdoor cut, today s two plays show you how different actions off the high post lead to several chances to score. The first utilizes an action I love when correctly executed the handoff. Every team runs ball screen action but the handoff adds other elements defenders aren t as used to seeing. When a screen is coming, players now are conditioned to yell it out for their teammates, so the defender being screened isn t blindsided. This also benefits the help defenders as they know a screen is coming. Plus it gives time to the defenders to decide if they are going to switch, go over/under the screen or how they want to defend the action. In a handoff situation, no one calls out a handoff, yet it acts in almost the same way as a screen. The receiver runs off the ball handler s outside shoulder, which leaves little room for the receiver s defender to fight through them. And when the exchange is made, focus now centers upon the new ball handler. The passer typically is forgotten. Run a simple flare screen on the perimeter and the original ball handler is open for a perimeter jumper. The second play for today (page 5) doesn t use the handoff but instead sends constant backdoor action to the hoop to keep defenders guessing. The actions eventually create a 3-point opportunity, or make an extra pass to a post player who has an unsuspecting defender on his or her back. As today s players burst out of the typical roles and become hybrids capable of shooting and handling the ball anywhere on the floor, the 1-4 High continues to be one of the most effective set offenses you can run. 4 1-4 High Plays High Handoff Increases Options There are inside options to start, then perimeter-shot options follow in this set utilizing the threat of or an actual handoff to keep the defense guessing WHY USE IT Defenses are at risk to giving up backdoor cuts and scores due to all offensive players being located higher than the free throw line. The first couple of options take advantage of this while the final options exploit the perimeter as the defense tries to recover and guard the backdoor cutters. SET UP Start in a 1-4 High formation with the posts located at the elbows and the guards on the wings. The point guard is dribbling at the top. HOW TO PLAY 1 passes to 5 at the left elbow. 3 makes a backdoor basket cut and looks for the pass from 5 [1]. If 3 isn t open, 3 moves to the opposite block. 1 then cuts around 5 looking for a handoff or pass for a layup. 4 steps out and screens for 2. 2 circles toward the top. If 1 isn t open, 5 looks to pass to 2 for a shot [2]. If 2 doesn t have a shot, he continues his cut around 5 and is in position for a handoff. 5 either gives 2 the ball or dribbles across. 4 screens down for 3. 3 cuts to the wing. 5 or 2 passes to 3. 4 continues low and screens for 1 to free 1 going to the corner for a potential shot [3]. TECHNIQUE If 2 takes the handoff from 5, 2 looks to turn the corner and attack the rim. When the pass goes to 3, 3 either takes the shot or passes to 1 in the corner. 1This backdoor cut may be open the first time you run this play as defenses are so focused on the perimeter the space by the hoop is wide open 25 keeps the defender on his or her backside and hands off the ball to 1 if 1 has a step on the defender 45 hands off to 2, who then attacks the hoop with the ball (or passes to 3), or keeps it and sets up a pass across to 3 curling to the perimeter 3If 3 doesn t receive a backdoor pass to start, 3 needs to clear to the opposite side for spacing purposes in case 1 gets the handoff from 5 53 curls using 4 s screen to come free on the perimeter for a possible 3-point shot or an extra pass to the corner for 1 s 3-pointer Player movement Ball movement Dribble Shot Issue 156 BASKETBALL COACH WEEKLY 4
5 1-4 High Plays Use Your Smart Center When you have a center with above-average court awareness, use this to your advantage to exploit several potential scoring options out of a 1-4 High look WHY USE IT Centers aren t usually handed complete decision-making within a set play. But, when your tallest player also is one of your smartest, it makes sense to allow him or her to look over the defense and pick the best scoring option based on the actions. SET UP Start in a 1-4 High formation with the posts located at the elbows and the guards on the wings. The point guard is dribbling at the top. HOW TO PLAY 1 passes to 5 at the left high post, then loops around 5 and sets a screen for 3, 3 cuts backdoor looking for a pass from 5 [1]. If 3 isn t open, 1 screens down for 3, who cuts to the wing for a shot. 1 steps to the corner. If 3 isn t open on the wing cut, 5 dribbles across the free throw line as 4 cuts down the lane line, then loops into the lane and posts up the defender [2]. If 4 isn t open, 5 passes to 3, who looks to 4 reposting on the block. 5 also can pass to the opposite block, who looks for 4 reposting on the right side [3]. TECHNIQUE Be sure 5 keeps the ball high to make the potential passes to the lane cutters easier. It s the reason why this play is so effective teams can t stop passes over their heads. 1This is a great first option as defenses aren t expecting a backdoor cut right away, especially coming off a screen from the initial passer 2If 3 doesn t get a pass, 3 must be ready to cut hard back to the perimeter coming off another screen from 1 45 again surveys the defense and decides which way the remainder of the play runs, depending on if 3 or 2 are open, or if 4 has a decided advantage on one side of the floor 34 drags his or her defender low and looks to keep that person on their backside to establish post-up position in the lane 5This is where you want 4 communicating with teammates about which way he or she is going it can be a simple look at the ball handler or an actual verbal call Player movement Ball movement Dribble Shot Issue 156 BASKETBALL COACH WEEKLY 5
6 Daily Drill Work Passing, Pivoting & Closing Out Paired Passing uses simple actions to work a multitude of game skills within a drill you can use everyday to hammer home their importance WHY USE IT Not every drill needs to utilize the entire floor, run the gamut of actions and have multiple steps. The drill on this page takes up minimal space, has just a few movements but still works on many of the skills necessary to have success on game days. SET UP Pair up players with each pair having one ball. The player with the ball is standing in front of the other. Use the lane width as the distance needed to cover in this drill. HOW TO PLAY 1 takes two speed dribbles forward then makes a jump stop. 1 has the choice of four pivots front or reverse and on either foot. After the pivot, use a cross step or an open step to create separation [1]. Now, 1 makes a pass to 2. 1 has four passing options with a single-hand chest pass with right or left hand, or a single-hand bounce pass with right or left hand. After making the pass, 1 closes out on 2 [2]. 1 plays defense on 2. On the catch, 2 pivots for two seconds, then rips through and speed dribbles across the lane to repeat the drill [3]. TECHNIQUE Have the defender count out the two seconds ( One! Two! ) as the pass receiver pivots. Keep the actions moving over and over for a set amount of time. Be sure players continue to work hard and hustle as the drill wears on. 1Start the action with two speed dribbles to get across the width of the lane, then the dribbler pivots, uses a step to gain separation and is in position to make the pass 21 makes the pass across to 2, using either hand and either a chest pass or bounce pass 4The defender covers the offensive player for two seconds as the ball handler pivots 3Now, 1 closes out with short, fast and choppy steps with hands up to defend and distract the ball handler 5After pivoting for two seconds, the offensive player rips through and takes two dribbles to get across the lane so the movements continue By Troy Culley, apprentice coach, U18 England national team Player movement Ball movement Dribble Shot Issue 156 BASKETBALL COACH WEEKLY 6
