2 AUBURN FOOTBALL W E B E L I E V E I N A U B U R N TOday in Jordan-Hare SCOUTING Clemson By Clemson Media Relations Eight Current Tigers Played in Last Meeting Eight current Clemson players competed against Auburn in the 2007 Chick-fil-A Bowl in Atlanta. Only one Tiger still on the team started that game. Current Clemson offensive tackle Chris Hairston made his first career start in that contest. Seven other Tigers came off the bench in that game. The list includes wide receiver Terrance Ashe, defensive end Kourtnei Brown, defensive tackle Miguel Chavis, wide receiver Xavier Dye, defensive back Byron Maxwell, then linebacker now safety DeAndre McDaniel, and holder Mike Wade. Parker Returns to Auburn Clemson quarterback Kyle Parker has already had a big day in Auburn, Ala. On June 7, 2010, Parker hit a three-run home run in the first inning of the Tigers 13-7 victory over the Auburn Tigers on the baseball diamond. That win propelled Clemson to the Super Regional of the NCAA Baseball Tournament where the Tigers defeated Alabama. The Tigers eventually advanced to the Final Four of the College World Series. That home run by Parker was his 20 th of the season and it allowed him to become the first athlete in Division I sports history to hit 20 home runs and throw 20 touchdown passes in the same academic year. This will be Parker s first football game against Auburn. He was 3-for-12 at the plate with four runs scored and four RBIs in three baseball games against Auburn. Clemson and Auburn Historical Ties The first three coaches in Clemson football history were Auburn graduates. Walter Riggs, Clemson s first head coach and later University President, was Clemson s head coach in 1896 and He was an 1893 Auburn graduate. William Williams, Clemson s head coach in 1897, was an 1896 Auburn graduate, while John Penton, Clemson s head coach in 1898, had graduated from Auburn in the spring of Both Teams Get to the Quarterback Another common denominator between Clemson and Auburn takes place on the defensive side of the ball. Both teams are proficient at getting to the quarterback and recording negative plays. Clemson has eight sacks so far this year and the 4.0 per game average is fifth best in the nation. Clemson is also eighth in the country in overall tackles for loss per game with a 9.5 average. Auburn is 10 th in the nation in sacks per game by its defense with 3.5 per game. They rank 14 th in the nation in tackles for loss per game with 8.5. Andre Branch has three sacks in the first two games to rank 11 th in the nation in that category. He is 14 th in tackles for loss per game. Auburn s Antoine Carter is 11 th in the nation in sacks with 1.5 per game. Tigers Face Top 20 Auburn Team on the Road The Auburn Tigers are ranked 16 th by AP and 15 th by USA Today and today s game marks the first time Clemson has played a ranked non-conference team in the opponent s stadium since the 2005 season when the Tigers defeated 19 th ranked South Carolina Clemson has a 3-4 record against nonconference top 25 teams on the road since 1986, but has a lifetime record of in that situation. The wins took place at 17 th ranked Missouri in 1950, at 15 th ranked Miami (FL) in the Orange Bowl on Jan. 1, 1951, at 17 th ranked Georgia in 1977, at 14 th ranked Georgia in 1986, at 16 th ranked Florida State in 1989, and the aforementioned South Carolina game of Clemson has 59 all-time wins over Top 25 teams regardless of site. 3 A N D L O V E I T! AUBURN TIGERS SCOUTING AUBURN By Brad Gust GAMEDAY IN AUBURN ESPN s College GameDay Built by Home Depot featuring Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit, Lee Corso and Desmond Howard is in Auburn for today s game. It marks the sixth visit to Auburn by the GameDay crew, which last visited for the 2008 Auburn-LSU game. Auburn also hosted GameDay for the 1995 Iron Bowl, 1997 and 2006 games against Florida and a 2004 game against Georgia. GameDay was scheduled to be at the Auburn-LSU game on Sept. 18, 2004, but the threat of Hurricane Ivan forced the show to be relocated. It is the 11th time that Auburn has played in GameDay s on-site game. The Tigers are 5-5 in GameDay contests, including a 3-2 mark at home. AUBURN-CLEMSON HISTORY Auburn and Clemson have met 46 times, with Auburn holding a edge in the series. The last two meetings have been in bowl games, with Auburn winning both the 1998 Peach Bowl following the 1997 season and the 2007 Chick-fil-A Bowl. Prior to that, the teams played each year from , with Auburn winning all five games. In fact, Auburn has won the last 13 games in the series dating back to a 34-0 Clemson victory in The first meeting was in 1899, with Auburn winning at home, STOPPING THE RUN Auburn s defense has performed well against the run in its first two games, ranking third in the SEC and 17th nationally in rushing defense, allowing just 80 yards per game. Auburn s success against the run dates back to the end of the 2009 season, as Auburn held three of its final four opponents last season to less than 100 yards rushing, including limiting Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram to just 30 yards and no scores on 16 carries - his lowest output of the season. FAIRLEY OBVIOUS Auburn s Nick Fairley was named SEC Player of the Week after a dominant performance against Mississippi State. Fairley totaled five tackles, including 2.5 for loss and 1.5 sacks, an interception, a fumble recovery and three quarterback hurries. Fairley became the first Auburn player to collect an interception and fumble recovery in the same game since Sen Derrick Marks against New Mexico State in 2007, and the first Tiger to do it in a conference game since Karibi Dede in 2005 at Georgia. He is now tied with Antoine Carter for the team lead in both sacks (3.0) and tackles for loss (4.0). IN A RUSH Auburn piled up the rushing yardage against Arkansas State, totaling 367 yards rushing on 49 attempts (7.5 ypc), before collecting 190 more against Mississippi State. The Tigers now have three of the top 10 individual rushers in the SEC this season, as Cameron Newton ranks second in the conference and 16th nationally averaging yards per game, while Onterio McCalebb (72.0) and Michael Dyer (71.5) rank eighth and ninth, respectively, in the SEC in rushing. BIG PLAYS The Tigers have run eight plays already this season that covered at least 35 yards, including five that resulted in touchdowns. In fact, Auburn s 10 touchdown plays have averaged 25.1 yards per play this season. Last season, Auburn had 22 plays of at least 35 yards. In 2008, before Gus Malzahn s arrival, the Tigers had just nine plays that covered 35 or more yards. Tex Williams L.B. Tex Williams, a long-time member of Auburn s press box statistics crew, passed away Sunday, Sept. 12. Prior to this season, Williams attended every Auburn home game for the past 53 years. Williams was employed in Auburn s university relations department from 1956 until his retirement in He was 87. Head Coach Gene Chizik (Florida, 1985) Auburn Record (2nd year) vs. Clemson... Hard work, responsibility, good character and strong convictions are just a few, and they are qualities found in senior defensive end Antoine Carter. Carter came to Auburn three years ago from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. In high school, I was very unique, Carter said. I did everything the way I wanted and I felt out of place. He then came to Auburn and his responsibility and work ethic grew twofold. On the field, Carter was named to the Coaches All-SEC Freshman Team. He saw action in all 13 games during the 2007 season. My goal as a player was to use my abilities to help the team in as many ways as I could, Carter said. As a person, I wanted to make sure that I finished school and graduated on time. To play football in the Southeastern Conference and carry a full class schedule is a huge challenge Carter explained, and he needed help balancing the two. He looked to former Auburn linebacker Quentin Groves for leadership. If I needed anything, on the field or off the field, I could ask him, Carter said. When Groves left, Carter turned to Antonio Coleman to set an example. Now that he s (Coleman) gone, I ve got younger guys looking up to me, Carter explained. Off the field, Carter has a number of influences including the Tigers team chaplain. Brother Chette (Williams) really opened my eyes to a lot of things, Carter said. I can always go to him and talk to him about anything. My parents, I put them through a lot when I was in high school, so now I just continue to try and do the right things. Carter has matured in the three years he s been on the Plains. I ve learned that nothing is impossible, Carter said. In high school, I would get frustrated and would give up. Now that I m here, I ve learned to push myself. His drive and motivation is felt by his teammates. One thing I ve learned from him is that he tries to pick up the tempo and tries to motivate 8 AUBURNTIGERS.COM

5 A N D L O V E I T! AUBURN TIGERS the guys, senior linebacker Josh Bynes said. He s done a great job setting an example for the guys at practice and out there on the field. In his time at Auburn, Carter has learned the value of staying positive in the face of adversity and the impact that has on his friends and teammates. I m a good guy, Carter said. I m always a happy person, even when I m down, and I like to joke around. I think it motivates the guys. I don t always want to be out there practicing, but I always try and do what I can to get the guys moving. Williams has seen Carter s growth and development as a person over the last four years. I ve seen him grow up in front of my eyes, Williams said. His maturity, his convictions, I ve seen his game mature and become a leader for his team and for those around him. Carter found a new perspective on life just over a year ago with the birth of his daughter, A myria Carter. It really opened my eyes up to life, Carter said. I wasn t living for myself anymore. I had to take care of somebody else. Williams has seen Carter s focus shift to what lay ahead and to building a strong life for he and his daughter. So often when we see young people that age, they only see what s in front of them, Williams said. The birth of Antoine s daughter has helped him think about the future more. Currently second in the SEC in sacks and tied for third in tackles-for-loss, Carter will take a shot at the NFL after the 2010 season. I still have dreams about playing at the next level, Carter said. I ll be blessed if that happens. I want to be able to live off of that and take care of my family. With his last season under way, Carter will finish his time at Auburn with perspective and maturity. I ve gained respect from players and from coaches and I really respect people more, Carter said. I understand that everything can t go my way. I just try to make the best of everything I do and I just try to do things right all the time. I ve come a long way. AUBURNTIGERS.COM 9

6 AUBURN TIGERS A word from Jay Jacobs Auburn University Director of Athletics Today we are proud to present the highest awards that Auburn student-athletes can receive. We will honor former Auburn swimmer Jordan Anderson with the 2010 Cliff Hare Award and former gymnast Krissy Voss with the 2010 Leah Rawls Atkins Award. I have been blessed to get to know both of these outstanding young people over the past four years. Each embodies the Auburn spirit and lives the Auburn Creed. I wanted to share a little about them so the Auburn Family can fully appreciate the importance of today s recognition. Jordan Anderson graduated in the spring as one of the most highly decorated scholar-athletes in Auburn history. A Rhodes Scholar, Jordan also won the H. Boyd McWhorter Southeastern Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The Roanoke, Va., native earned his degree in biomedical sciences and will spend the next year studying at Oxford in England. Jordan was a team captain on Auburn s 2010 Southeastern Conference Championship team. He earned three All-America honors last year alone and was a two-time All-SEC second team performer. While his academic and athletic accomplishments are quite extraordinary, Jordan s community service efforts during his four years at Auburn and his passion for improving medical care in developing countries clearly demonstrate his belief in the human touch as stated in the Auburn Creed. I have no doubt that Jordan will be successful in his studies at Oxford and in his career. Simply put, he will help make the world a better place. Krissy Voss accomplishments are no less impressive and are too numerous to list. A chemistry major while at Auburn, Krissy was one of two Brad Davis Southeastern Conference Community Service Leaders of the Year honored at the SEC s Spring Meetings in Krissy was also named the 2010 SEC Gymnastics Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She received the Dan L. Philen endowed scholarship for chemistry in 2009 and was named an Academic Top Tiger each of her four years at Auburn. In addition to her stellar academic record, Krissy won the all-around gymnastics competition in two meets last season and was a four-year letter winner. She made her mark as a leader on campus and a volunteer in the community as well. The Paradise Valley, Ariz., native served on the Southeastern Conference and the Auburn Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Krissy volunteered with Big Sis/Lil Sis program in each of her four years at Auburn, organized canned food drives, visited patients at East Alabama Medical Center and residents at local retirement homes and was one of our many student-athletes who traveled to Enterprise to assist with relief efforts after a devastating tornado ripped through the southeast Alabama town. I highlight Jordan and Krissy so that we can all take pride in their accomplishments, but they are just two of our scholar-athletes who are excelling in the classroom and contributing in the community. As you may have read before, graduating student-athletes is one of our department s strategic goals. Last spring, we honored a record 207 student-athletes for making a 3.0 or higher GPA during the previous year at our annual Tiger Torch ceremony. More than half of our studentathletes posted at least a 3.0 GPA during the 2010 spring semester. The academic success of our student-athletes is a tremendous credit to the young men and women who successfully balance two full-time jobs as students and athletes, but it is also a tribute to the Auburn University faculty as well as the academic support staff of the Athletics Department. While winning will always rank among our highest goals, ensuring that our student-athletes succeed at the highest levels in the classroom is no less important. We also want to thank the members of Tigers Unlimited who fund scholarships and programs that benefit our student-athletes. We could not do it without you. God Bless and War Eagle!
