2 A CLOSER LOOK AT UTC S LOSSES AUBURN FOOTBALL W E B E L I E V E I N A U B U R N SCOUTING UTC TOday in Jordan-Hare The Mocs are just a few plays away from sitting at 8-0 on the season. UTC gave up double-digit fourth quarter leads against top-5 teams in each of their two losses on the season. Against Appalachian State, Chattanooga led with just over 14 minutes left to go in the game before the Mountaineers came storming back for the win. On the road against Jacksonville State, UTC led 17-0 in the third quarter and 17-7 in the fourth, before the Gamecocks posted a win. As it stands today, both teams are still undefeated and ranked No. 1 (ASU) and No. 2 (JSU) in the nation in both the Sports Network and FCS Coaches Top-25 polls. The Mocs erased a 21-point deficit to tie the Elon game at 35 in the fourth quarter, however, two turnovers led to 14 unanswered points in the loss. BRADFORD S RETURN TO RECEIVER Junior WR Joel Bradford s move back to receiver from defensive back is paying huge dividends this season. He has twice set the school record for receiving yards in a game and has the two highest single-game totals in the NCAA this season. He first topped the UTC mark with 254 yards on 11 catches in a win against Eastern Kentucky on Sept. 18. Bradford recorded his first career 100-yard game before the end of the first quarter, thanks in large part to an 80-yard touchdown connection with junior QB B.J. Coleman. That strike was the longest by a Moc since 1999 and just the eighth passing play of 80+ yards in school history. He received his first career SoCon Player of the Week honor following the EKU game. Bradford bested his own mark with 274 yards in a win at No. 25 Furman on Oct. 23. He was six yards shy of the SoCon mark set by Appalachian State s DaVon Fowlkes against Elon in He caught 15 passes, including one touchdown, in Chattanooga s win. He now leads the nation with receiving yards per game and ranks fourth in the FCS with 8.4 catches per game. WYNN RESURRECTING HIS CAREER Senior RB Erroll Wynn saw his first action in nearly two years when he had 13 carries for 98 yards, all in the second half, at Jacksonville State. He sat out the 2009 season as a redshirt and was held out of the ASU game. He continues to impress with 491 yards on 87 carries this season. He is currently third in the By UTC Media Relations SoCon with 70.1 rushing yards per game. Wynn s 547 career carries is 4th all time at UTC and ranks 13th among all active players in the FCS. He is now No. 6 on the Mocs career list with 2,295 rushing yards. SUTHERLAND SHOWING HIS VERSATILITY Sophomore WR Brian Sutherland (Smyrna, Ga.) is among the SoCon leaders in allpurpose yards this season. Sutherland is second in the league with yards per game. His total of 1,161 all purpose yards is made up of 168 rushing, 436 receiving and 557 on kick-off returns. WISE LEADS THE NATION WITH SIX INTERCEPTIONS Freshman DB Kadeem Wise (Lawrenceville, Ga.) was named the Southern Conference Freshman of the Week after picking off two passes at Western Carolina on Sept. 25. He now has six interceptions for the season, breaking UTC s freshman record set in 1978 by current head coach Russ Huesman. Wise was the first Moc with multiple INTs in a game since Buster Skrine had two against Western Kentucky in He is also tied for No. 2 in the nation with his six picks and is two shy of the singleseason school-record of eight set by Reggie Solomon (1987) and Phillip Aldridge (1985). 3 A N D L O V E I T! AUBURN TIGERS SCOUTING AUBURN By Brad Gust HOMECOMING ON THE PLAINS Today s game will mark the 97th observance of Homecoming at Auburn and the 84th homecoming game for the Tigers. Homecoming at Auburn began in June 1913, when Dr. Charles Thach, president of what was then Alabama Polytechnic Institute, issued a proclamation calling for the observance of a Homecoming for all those loyal sons who, as former Auburn students, have passed through her portals and received her honors. Auburn is in Homecoming games, and has won a school-record 18 in a row. AUBURN HOMECOMING COURT At halftime of today s game, the Homecoming Queen will be crowned on the east side of the field. The queen was elected by a vote of the Auburn student body on Friday, Nov. 5, and the winner s name has been kept in anonymity until the announcement. The five finalists are Abby Steverson (Smiths Station), Emily Brown (Vestavia Hills), Jordan Lee Spencer (Auburn), Charlotte Rae (Kennesaw, Ga.) and Victoria Bennett (Madison). All applicants must be an undergraduate with senior status and maintain a grade point average of 2.5 or better. SENIOR SALUTE Auburn will honor its senior class prior to today s game against Chattanooga. The group has posted a record over the past four seasons, including a 22-7 mark at Jordan-Hare Stadium, and has won two bowl games. The 2010 seniors include: OL Mike Berry, DL Mike Blanc, OL Jorrell Bostrom, WR Kodi Burns, LB Josh Bynes, K Wes Byrum, DE Antoine Carter, QB Neil Caudle, LB Wade Christopher, DL Zach Clayton, OL Bart Eddins, S Zac Etheridge, RB Mario Fannin, DE Michael Goggans, OL Byron Isom, DB Woody Parramore, OL Ryan Pugh, DB Aairon Savage, P Ryan Shoemaker, LB Craig Stevens, DB Demond Washington, WR Terrell Zachery and OL Lee Ziemba. OFFENSE KEEPS ROLLING Auburn s offense continues to shine under second-year offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn, as the Tigers rank fourth nationally in rushing offense (307.7), sixth in total offense (496.2) and 10th in scoring offense (40.0). Auburn is on pace to break the school single-season records for scoring per game ( ) and total offense per game ( ) and currently has the second-best rushing yards per game average in school history ( ). Auburn has scored at least 50 points in four different games this season, which is the most in one season in school history. FEASTING ON SEC DEFENSES Auburn has put up amazing rushing numbers against the tough defenses of the SEC. The Tigers have rushed for more than 300 yards against five straight SEC opponents and are averaging a whopping yards per game on the ground against SEC opponents, which leads the league by yards per game over runner-up Ole Miss and LSU (188.4). DYER DOING DAMAGE True freshman Michael Dyer had his third 100-yard rushing performance of the season and second in a row by rushing for a career-high 180 yards at Ole Miss. His rushing total was third best ever by an Auburn freshman and most ever by an AU freshman against an SEC opponent. Dyer now has 723 yards rushing this season, which ranks third best for a freshman in Auburn history. He needs just 107 more yards to pass Bo Jackson s Auburn freshman record of 829 yards set in His average of 80.3 yards per game ranks fourth nationally among freshmen. 4 AUBURN FOOTBALL Anders Cover Story By Mae Margaret Davis W E B E L I E V E I N A U B U R N Mike Berry made his decision to play football at Auburn without much hesitation. He liked the school, the football team, the coaches and everything they had to offer. More than that, it had a familiar face or two. We had a lot of guys from my high school go to Auburn and around the time I started getting recruited and started getting offers from Auburn, I was hearing good things from all of them, Berry said. At all of the other schools I was being recruited by, I really didn t know too many people. A native of Antioch, Tenn., Berry graduated from Brentwood Academy in the spring of 2006 and became the sixth Brentwood graduate to play for Auburn. Of the five that came before him, one was Berry s former fellow offensive linemen and childhood friend, King Dunlap. I ve known King since I was five, Berry said. We played pee-wee football together and our families know each other. I knew he was going to be here for two years with me, so I knew if I was having problems, he would be there for me. Now in his final season at Auburn, Berry has used what he learned from former teammates like Dunlap to become the same kind of role model and example for his teammates. Berry says he always tries to be the kind of guy that the other players can look up to or go to for support. They know I m not a person that s going to be down on them, Berry said. I m a more positive type of guy. Even when you re doing bad, I m not going to tell you that you re doing bad. I m going to try to be positive. Berry s teammates recognize that side of Berry and see it every day. He is really just picking guys up when they re down, especially the young guys, said fellow senior offensive lineman Byron Isom. They look up to us and Mike s always there for any of us with encouragement. Close friend and teammate Bart Eddins adds that Berry s desire to lend a hand doesn t apply exclusively to the younger players. There are some guys on the team that are juniors and seniors that he helps, Eddins said. He s helped me out with some stuff. Mike s just got that personality and he wants to help out. You have these younger guys coming in and they re already nervous and scared to death. Then you have somebody who has a good personality and who s always nice and it just helps him take on that role of a big-brother mentor or role model that much easier. Even beyond being a good example to his teammates, Berry s standout personality keeps everyone smiling and laughing. Eddins says Berry is one of the most likable people on the team and the kind of guy that they all enjoy being around. I really don t know anybody on the team that has any problems with him, Eddins said. He s just kind of an all-around guy. He always has a smile on his face ready to joke around. I backed him up this year and last year, and he has really helped me come along and be a better offensive linemen. He s a good guy. Berry recognizes himself as the jokester of the offensive line, but sees it as a positive quality. He says that he likes being the guy that people 8 AUBURNTIGERS.COM

5 A N D L O V E I T! AUBURN TIGERS Mike Berry can look to for a laugh. I like being there for my guys when they re down and whatnot, Berry said. Some of them can get kind of serious after awhile, but (you have to) make fun of it. At the end of the day, it s just a game and you have to have fun because if you don t, you can make yourself very miserable. Now in his fifth season at Auburn, Berry has seen both the ups and downs of the past several football seasons. Because of that, Berry prides himself in trying to stay grounded and simply take each day and each game as it comes. I ve been through an 06 when we got up as far as No. 2 in the nation, but I also was here for a 5-7 season, Berry said. I saw what that did to people and I really didn t like that. You want to win in this game, but whether you win or lose, that shouldn t determine who you are. At the end of the day, you ought to be the same person. Our coaches are big on having good demeanor no matter what, whether we re down 21-0 or we re up. I take pride in that. With that outlook on life, Berry knew that it was very important to earn a degree during his career at Auburn. Berry graduated this past spring with a degree in public administration, and hopes to one day work in some capacity in the field of law or human resources. I knew I wanted to get my degree and I knew school was very important, Berry said. Being here, you see guys who have dreams of going to the next level, but things don t really pan out and it s good to have that degree because at the end of the day, football isn t going to last forever. A lot of people let football determine who they are. I definitely didn t want to do that. Coming from a close-knit family, Berry also says his experience at Auburn was made better because of the Auburn family. It means a lot to me, Berry said. When you leave for college, it s the first time that you re on your own, and you need this type of family environment. Especially when you first get here, you re really down and you don t know too many people. It s definitely important to have this. I wish every college student could have that type of stuff. It s just one of those things that we re fortunate to have, 105 teammates. Whatever the outcome of his football career, Berry is focusing on enjoying each moment while he can. I m going to remember everything that comes with going to Auburn, Berry said. Football, trips to the Haley Center, everything. Now that my career is coming to an end, I reflect on all of that and at certain times I didn t like it, but now I wish I had more time to do it. With more than half the season complete and the end of Berry s collegiate career drawing near, Berry says his goal is to play every game with no regrets, and he offers this piece of advice for his younger teammates. In life, things aren t always going to go your way, Berry said. There are going to be trials and tribulations. Just don t let that type of stuff get you down, that s a part of it. I look at it as something that is going to build character. At the end of the day, things happen for a reason. I wouldn t trade my experience for anything. AUBURNTIGERS.COM 9

6 AUBURN TIGERS A word from Jay Jacobs Auburn University Director of Athletics We all know Auburn is a special place. We have the prettiest campus, the best fans, the best student section and the best gameday experience in the nation. Others are taking notice as well. We routinely receive s from visiting fans who simply can t believe how well they are treated while in Auburn or how electric our gameday atmosphere is. A growing number of regional and national members of the media are also writing and talking about what a special place Auburn is on Saturdays during the fall. Excerpts from a few of those articles appear below. We felt it was important to share them because your class, hospitality, sportsmanship and spirit are a big reason we continue to see such positive pieces. It is also important to recognize, embrace and cultivate this great Auburn tradition so it can be passed on to future generations. I hope you enjoy reading them. There are a lot of places that rock around the SEC, and there are a lot of places around this conference that hold noise and make you feel like your ear drums are about to explode. But it s that way from the opening kickoff at Auburn and only picks up steam from there. I ve been to just about all the stadiums in the league the last few years, and I say with confidence that Jordan-Hare Stadium is as consistently loud and electric throughout the game as any stadium I ve been to, and I think it s gotten even more intense this season. When that crowd sensed blood in the fourth quarter last Saturday against Arkansas, even Toomer s Corner was rocking several blocks away. They call it the Loveliest Little Village on the Plains, but there ain t nothing lovely about it if you re the other team. Chris Low, espn.com Auburn has created the best home-field advantage in the Southeastern Conference with an unmatched gameday atmosphere. No stadium is louder than Jordan-Hare, which holds the noise because of its bowl shape. The gates open two hours before kickoff for students, and every seat is quickly filled. These folks even cheer when the Auburn band enters the field. Auburn games are all about the football, nothing else. You get the impression these 87,000 fans live 365 days a year for the seven afternoons or evenings they spend rooting for their beloved Tigers and intimidating the heck out of opponents. Ron Morris, The State (Columbia, S.C.) It s hard to put a finger on it but...there s this close bond here between generations (of) alums who come back to the school. There really is a kind of family feel. There s a real passion for the Tigers. Chris Fowler, ESPN Auburn might be the most charming campus, town, atmosphere and environment in all of the Southeast. It s just a great mix of tradition, academic emphasis and football. If you have never been to Auburn, just walk down College. As you go past some of the shops and some of the restaurants and Toomer s Corner, it s just a wonderful experience. Tom Rinaldi, ESPN Those comments really say it all about Auburn and what makes us different. Thank you for the vital role you play in making Auburn such a special place to be on Saturdays in the fall. We are glad that you are with us today as we celebrate homecoming during what has become another memorable football season. God Bless and War Eagle! Jay AUBURNTIGERS.COM 16 13
