7 Cleveland State Basketball 5 LUCKY NO. 4: Perhaps the Vikings should just try to finish in fourth place in the league standings. After all, CSU has captured the last two league championships when seeded fourth (2008 & 2010). In 2008, the Vikings defeated Butler in the quarterfinals (79-68), won at Green Bay in the semifinals (90-66) and topped Wright State (70-56) in the championship game. This year, CSU defeated UIC at home, 78-72, in the quarterfinals before an overtime win at Green Bay in the semifinals (83-75) and a win over Butler in the title game. The Vikings have been seeded fourth four times in school history and claim an all-time record of 7-2 as the tournament s No. 4 seed. TOURNEY TIME: Kailey Klein always seems to up her game when the lights are the brightest and the league tournament was a great example. In nine career Horizon League tournament contests, Klein averaged 20.8 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, helping the Vikings go 6-3, including two tournament titles. She was the MVP of the tournament in 2008 and ROQUE GOES DOWNTOWN: Senior Jessica Roque turned in a clutch performance in Sunday s Horizon League Championship game against Butler, scoring 16 points, including a perfect 4-for-4 effort from three-point. Roque, who has made her last five three-point attempts, ranks seventh in school history with 132 three-pointers made. RIGHT AFTER HER TWIN SISTER: Jessica Roque s performance came just two days after her twin sister, Angel, turned in one of her best all-around performances in the semifinal win over Green Bay (March 12). Angel Roque played all 45 minutes against the Phoenix, finishing with 12 points, six assists and five rebounds. She hit 4-of-7 from three-point, including a three that gave the Vikings a six point lead (79-73) with 29 seconds left in overtime. Roque has started the last seven games with CSU going 6-1 in those contests. WORKING OVERTIME: The Vikings improved to 3-0 in overtime games this season with a win at Green Bay in the league semifinals on March 12. CSU, which also won at home against both Indiana and Detroit in overtime this season, is all-time in games that go to overtime. The three overtime games are tied for the most in a single season along with the and seasons. CSU was also 3-0 in HOT, HOT, HOT: CSU shot a season-best.596 (31-52) from the field in the March 12 win over Green Bay, marking the second best shooting performance by a Viking team in school history. The record is.627 (32-51) at Niagara on Jan. 21, CSU was near flawless after the first half, hitting 15-of-20 (.750) in the second half against Green Bay and then making five of their six attempts (.833) in overtime.... ESPECIALLY FROM THREE: The Vikings hit a season-high 10 threepointers at Green Bay (March 12) in the league semifinals, connecting on 56-percent from behind the arc (10-18). CSU hit just 1-of-7 in the first half, but went on to nail 7-of-8 three s in the second half and 2-of-3 in overtime. THE ONLY TWO: Cleveland State is one of two teams in the Horizon League to reach the semifinals of the Horizon League Championship in each of the last three seasons, joining Green Bay. CSU won the title in 2008 and 2010, while Green Bay claimed it last season. THE KRESS IN MARCH: CSU s semifinal win over Green Bay on March 12 snapped the Phoenix s 27 game home win streak, which went all the way back to the last time the Vikings won at the Kress Events Center, a win in the 2008 Horizon League semifinals. In three seasons at the Kress Events Center, Green Bay is 46-5 with two of the losses coming to CSU. The Vikings are the only visiting team who has won more than once in the Kress Events Center Horizon League Honors and Awards FIRST TEAM ALL-LEAGUE Melanie Thornton (Butler) Kailey Klein (Cleveland State) Kayla Tetschlag (Green Bay) Brigid Mulroy (Detroit) Celeste Hoewisch (Green Bay) SECOND TEAM ALL-LEAGUE Julie Wojta (Green Bay) Jasmine Bailey (UIC) Jessie Miller (UIC) Yar Shayok (Detroit) Shawnita Garland (Cleveland State) ALL-NEWCOMER TEAM Yar Shayok (Detroit) Brandi Brown (Youngstown State) Alyssa Pittman (Butler) Sarah Eichler (Green Bay) Taylor Foulks (UIC) Sami Tucker (Milwaukee) NOTE: There was a tie for fifth place in the voting ALL-DEFENSIVE TEAM Melanie Thornton (Butler) Shawnita Garland (Cleveland State) Jasmine Bailey (UIC) Celeste Hoewisch (Green Bay) Kanisha Ward (Wright State) PLAYER OF THE YEAR Melanie Thornton (Butler) NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR Yar Shayok (Detroit) DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR Melanie Thornton (Butler) SIXTH PLAYER OF THE YEAR Susan Lester (Butler) COACH OF THE YEAR Autumn Rademacher (Detroit)

8 Cleveland State Basketball 6 2K FOR K2: Kailey Klein moved into second place on the all-time scoring list in Horizon League history two weeks ago and enters the NCAA tournament with 2,109 career points. Former Milwaukee standout Traci Edwards ( ) is the all-time leading scorer in Horizon League history with 2,340 points, while former Butler great Julie VonDielingen ( ) is the only other player in league history to reach the mark (2,018). KLEIN ADDS TO CAREER SCORING MARK: Kailey Klein s 23 points against Butler in the league title game allowed the Cherry, Ill., native to extend the CSU career scoring mark. Klein, who now has 2,109 points in her career, broke Dianne Foster s ( ; 82-84) 26-year old record of 1,851 points against Loyola on Feb. 6. The record setting basket was a left-handed layup in the paint off a pass from senior Angel Roque with 11:08 to play in the first half. SHE S A STEAL: Shawnita Garland has made a Horizon League most 96 steals this season, the fourth highest total in a single season at CSU. Garland, who ranks 18th in the nation in steals per game (3.0), made a league single-game high nine thefts at Eastern Michigan (Dec. 29), tying her for the fourth most steals in a game in school history. She has picked up her defense of late, making 45 steals over the last 11 games (4.1 spg) and has multiple steals in 26 of the 32 games this season. KLEIN & ROQUE TO EXTEND SCHOOL RECORD: Seniors Kailey Klein and Jessica Roque will extend their school record for career games played on Sunday when they take the court against Notre Dame for their 126th career game. The old record was 120 games by current graduate manager Brittany Korth ( ).... AND KLEIN TO BREAK START RECORD: Kailey Klein will add yet another school record to her resume when she is announced as a starter for Sunday s NCAA tournament game at Notre Dame. Klein will be making her 114th career start, breaking the current CSU record of 113 she shares with Juli Grant ( ) : Kailey Klein became the first player in school history to score 500 points in three different seasons two weeks ago. Klein scored 654 points as a sophomore, the highest single season total in school history, added 542 points last season, the seventh highest total in CSU history, and has scored 595 points this season, the third most in a single season. With five more points, she will be the first player in school history with two seasons of at least 600 points. KLEIN AT THE LINE: Kailey Klein holds the CSU career record for free throws made (599) and attempted (755), while her.793 percentage ranks third all-time. So it was a bit of a surprise when she was shooting just 60-percent (30-50) at the line at the conclusion of non-league games. However, since the Vikings began Horizon League play, Klein has been near automatic, hitting 116-of-136 (.853) from the charity stripe, allowing her to improve to 78-percent ( ) this season, ranking eighth in the Horizon League. 11 IN THE LEAGUE: Cleveland State s win at Milwaukee on March 4 allowed the Vikings to win their 11th league game, the second most in a season in school history. UNDER 40: When CSU held Youngstown State to 38 points on Feb. 20, it marked the second time this season that CSU held an opponent under 40 points. CSU defeated Ohio in the season opener, It is the first time since that the Vikings held two opponents under 40 points in the same season. The 34 points vs. Ohio were the fewest given up by CSU since a win over Ashland on Feb. 8, NICE COMEBACK: CSU trailed Valpo at the half, 44-36, when the two teams met at the Wolstein Center on Jan. 16, but rallied for a victory. It marked the largest halftime deficit CSU overcame this year. CSU has won three other games when trailing at the half this season, including Dec. 19 over Indiana when they trailed at the half, 34-33, and two league tournament games. The Vikings were down to UIC in the quarterfinals, 37-31, before rallying to win, and trailed Green Bay in the semifinals, VIKINGS LIKE THE A.R.C.: CSU continued its torrid shooting at Valparaiso s Athletics & Recreation Center on Feb. 11, shooting.537 (29-54) from the field. Over the last three seasons, the Vikings have combined to shoot.562 (86-153) from the field in three wins on the Crusaders home court. Last year, CSU shot. 581 (25-43) from the field, the fourth best in a single game in school history. KLEIN NAMED CSU ATHLETE OF THE MONTH FOR FEBRUARY: Kailey Klein earned the Female Athlete of the Month Award at CSU in February after averaging 24.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists, helping the Vikings go 5-2. Klein had four double-doubles in, including a 32 point, 10 rebound effort in a win over then first place Detroit on Feb. 25. In addition, she became the alltime leading scorer in CSU history against Loyola (Feb. 6) and was a two-time Horizon League Player of the Week selection in February.... AND JANUARY: Kailey Klein was named the CSU Female Athlete of the Month for January after averaging16.8 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists in nine games, helping CSU to a 5-4 mark. She had double-doubles at Loyola and at UIC, including 28 points with 11 rebounds against the Ramblers. Her performances in Chicago helped Klein earn Horizon League Player of the Week honors. In addition, Klein added a double-double of 19 points and 12 boards in win over Butler.... AND GARLAND GETS IT IN DECEMBER: Shawnita Garland picked up CSU s Female Athlete of the Month honor in December after averaging 12.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.0 steals in five December games. She recorded her first career double-double with 13 points and a career-high 12 rebounds at Niagara and then played a career-high 44 minutes, scoring 15 points in a win over Indiana. Garland also flirted with a rare quadruple-double at Eastern Michigan on Dec. 29, finishing with 14 points, nine steals, seven assists and six boards. 11 Cleveland State Basketball 9 NINE IS FINE: Kailey Klein s selection as the Horizon League Player of the Week on March 1 extended her school record to nine career selections and moved her into a tie for second place for the most awards in league history with Nicole Soulis of Green Bay. Milwaukee s Traci Edwards holds the record with 10 career awards. A HELPING HAND: Despite having her streak of scoring in double figures snapped at nine at UIC (Jan. 9), Shawnita Garland had a huge effect on the game, dishing out a careerhigh eight assists. More impressive was that she did not have a turnover. ROQUE EN FUEGO IN MEXICO: Jessica Roque did a majority of her damage against Iona (Nov. 27) from behind the threepoint line, connecting on a school-record tying seven three s in eight attempts. Roque s.875 (7-8) percentage from beyond the arc was a CSU single game record and the seventh best by a Divison I player this season. UP NEXT: Should the Vikings win at Notre Dame on Sunday afternoon, CSU would advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament and face the winner of Sunday s other first round game between seventh-seeded Wisconsin and 10th-seeded Vermont. 16 Cleveland State Basketball 14 CLEVELAND STATE IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT The Cleveland State women s basketball season was one for the ages as the Vikings made history by advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. After finishing the regular season with a modest mark and claiming fourth place in the Horizon League at 10-8, the Vikings rolled through the league championship with double-digit wins over Butler, top-seeded Green Bay and second-seeded Wright State. The league tournament title brought with it an automatic NCAA bid and CSU was awarded the No. 15 seed in the West Region. The Vikings traveled to Palo Alto, Calif. for a first round matchup with second-seeded Stanford. The Vikings gave the Cardinal all they had for the first four minutes, taking a 6-5 lead on three-pointers by Angel Roque and Kailey Klein. But Stanford turned to Jayne Appel, their 6-foot-5 All-American center, and scored 25 of the next 27 points to seize control of the game. Kailey Klein led CSU with 16 points while Robyn Hoying added 10 points and seven rebounds. GAME #33 Stanford 85 Cleveland State 47 March 22, 2008 Palo Alto, Calif. For a program that had struggled to find success throughout the previous three seasons, the journey to Palo Alto for the NCAA Championship for the Vikings started in October and included achievements that the program had never accomplished before. CSU won 19 games, the secondhighest single season total in school history, more then the total of the previous three seasons combined. 17 Cleveland State Basketball 15 lee reed Director of Athletics 8th Year at CSU Lee Reed, a former basketball standout at Cleveland State, is in his eighth year as the Director of Athletics at CSU. He rejoined the Viking family in the summer of 2002 and was immediately charged with leading Viking athletics to national prominence. His hard work and tireless work ethic during that time have helped the Viking athletic program move into the upper echelon of the Horizon League over the last four years and become one of the top programs in the entire State of Ohio. Over the last two years, Reed has overseen a department that has captured nine Horizon League Championships, as well as five runner-up finishes. In addtion, CSU has been represented at the NCAA Championship 13 times over the last two seasons. Reed s plan and vision culminated during the season when the Vikings claimed the James J. McCafferty Trophy, which is presented annually by the Horizon League in recognition of the league s all-sport champion. It was the first time that CSU captured the award. In addition, CSU won the league s Men s All-Sports Award, while the Vikings finished third in the Women s All-Sports Award. The Vikings, who had never finished higher than fifth place in the McCafferty standings, became just the fourth current Horizon League member to win the award and vaulted all the way from seventh place (out of nine schools) in the standings from In , the department claimed a program record five league titles with volleyball, men s golf, men s tennis and women s basketball advancing to postseason play after capturing Horizon League tournament titles. 18 Cleveland State Basketball 16 kate peterson abiad Head Coach 7th season at CSU & overall During her seven years at the helm of the Cleveland State women s basketball team, head coach Kate Peterson Abiad has systematically built a program that has been turned into one of the perennial contenders in the Horizon League. The route to get there was not an easy one, however, as Peterson Abiad endured many highs and lows in the time it took to retool and rebuild the Viking program into one of the top in the Horizon League. And now that Peterson Abiad has established the Vikings as one of the top programs in the league, that is where the seventh year coach wants to keep it. By winning the Horizon League Championship for the second time in the last three seasons and earning the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament that goes with it, Peterson Abiad has achieved the ultimate goal that she set for the program, namely, becoming a program that wins championships and competes on the national stage. After an up and down season, the Vikings entered the league tournament as the No. 4 seed, but were playing some of their best basketball of the seasonby winning five of their final six regular season games and eight of their last nine overall. Having peaked at the right time, CSU got past UIC in the quarterfinals and played a near flawless second half and overtime session to win at Green Bay in the semifinals before topping Butler in the championship game. It was Peterson Abiad s senior class of Stephaine Crosley, Kailey Klein, Angel Roque and Jessica Roque who put the team on their backs and led the Vikings to the league title. It is the same quartet that Peterson Abiad talks highly of and credits with turning the program around after committing to CSU following the Vikings 4-25 season in Last year, CSU advanced to the Horizon League semifinals for the second straight season, finishing overall and tying for the second most wins in school history. It marked the first time in 10 years that CSU played in the league semifinals in back-to-back seasons. The Vikings also placed a program best third in the Horizon League with a school record 12 victories. With that success came several accolades as Klein was chosen as the Horizon League Co-Player of the Year, the first Viking to earn the award since In addition, Dominique Butler and Shawnita Garland were chosen as Co-Defensive Players of the Year. It s no surprise that the duo was honored as Peterson Abiad has built her philosophy around a strong defense with a lot of ball pressure and a five-out motion offense, geared to wear down the opposition with constant movement and cutting. In fact, it is not uncommon for Peterson Abiad to play five-guard sets, forcing other teams forward and centers to guard quicker players on the perimeter. During her tenure at CSU, she has often used a lineup where no player on the court is taller than 5-foot-10. It was just two short years ago that Peterson Abiad s hard work and dedication on the recruiting trail, in the office, in the film room at practice and on the sidelines paid off when she led CSU to a win over Wright State in the Horizon League Championship, securing the programs first bid to the NCAA Championship in school history. CSU defeated Butler in the opening round and upset top-ranked Green Bay in the semifinals to reach the championship game. The Vikings finished overall, falling at eventual national runner-up Stanford in the NCAA first round. 34 Cleveland State Basketball : Vikings Back in the Dance for Second Time in Three Seasons Coming off back-to-back 19 wins seasons and with four seniors on the roster, the Cleveland State women s basketball team entered the season with high expectations. Built around the core of seniors Stephaine Crosley, Kailey Klein, Angel Roque and Jessica Roque, as well as junior Shawnita Garland, the Vikings set a goal of returning to the NCAA Championship for the second time in the last three seasons. Despite battling several ups and downs throughout the season, the Vikings played their best basketball down the stretch, capping the season with three wins in the league tournament to capture the Horizon League s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament for just the second time in school history. Defense Keys Win in Season Opener A strong defensive effort helped CSU earn a victory over Ohio in the season opener on Nov. 13. The 34 points allowed were the fewest that a CSU team has given up since Feb. 8, 1983, in a win over Ashland. The game was also a sign of things to come from freshman Shalonda Winton who scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds in her CSU debut. She was the first freshman to start the season opener since 2006 when Stephaine Crosley and Jessica Roque were in the starting lineup. CSU Drops Two Straight on Road The Vikings lost their next two games, falling at Toledo (72-62) on Nov. 15 and at Wisconsin, 70-68, on Nov. 22, in a game the Vikings led for more than 35 minutes, including a 12 point advantage (40-28) at the half. CSU held a seven point lead (68-61) after a Janelle Adams layup with four minutes to play, but the Badgers scored the final nine points to rally for the win. But Earn Split Out of Country The Vikings losing streak hit three with a setback to Marquette in the first day of the Caribbean Challenge in Cancun, Mexico, on Nov. 26. It was the first game CSU ever played outside of the country. Marquette appeared to be in control with 12:20 left and a lead. However, the Vikings pulled within two points (68-66) with 48 seconds left. After MU split a pair of free throws to extend the lead to three with 22 seconds left, the Vikings had one final chance, but a three-point attempt by Kailey Klein rattled in and out at the buzzer. The following day, CSU used the hot shooting of Jessica Roque to snap a three-game skid with a win over Iona. Roque nailed a school-record tying seven three-pointers in eight attempts to set a school record (.875). With the game tied at with five minutes to play, Roque knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to give CSU a lead. Following an Iona free throw, Roque came down and nailed her third straight three-pointer to push the lead to with 1:57 to play and all but ice the game. CSU Loses Two Upon Return The Vikings were sluggish in their first two games back in the United States, falling to Marshall, 71-56, on Dec. 2, and at Kent State, (Dec. 5). Facing the Thundering Herd just two days after coming home from Cancun, CSU allowed them to shoot.571 (36-63) from the field and dominate the glass, Angel Roque gave the Vikings a spark off the bench, scoring 16 points, including a 4-for-5 effort from threepoint. Things were not much better at Kent State as the Vikings were limited to.328 (22-67) shooting from the field. However, freshman Honesty King made her collegiate debut, pouring in 12 points in 15 minutes off the bench. Klein Leads Vikings Past Niagara & Vikings Bust BCS Mired in a bit of a slump, the Vikings turned to senior Kailey Klein to help them get out of the funk and she responded.
