Hofstra is coming off a 25-9 season and a 13-5 finish in the Colonial Athletic Association, advancing to the quarterfinals of the WNIT with wins over Harvard, Villanova, and Virginia... The Aggies have faced only one other current member of the Colonial Athletic Association, posting a, 78-57, win at home over Elon on Dec. 16, FOUR AND OH-MY!: UC Davis continued to roll with its fourth straight win to start the season on Wednesday night against Montana State -- the third time that Aggies have opened a year with at least four straight wins in the program s Division I Era, joining the and teams that began those seasons a perfect 5-0. Since , when the most reliable year-by-year results are available, the record for consecutive wins to start a season is seven, set by the team and duplicated by the squad. FREEBIES: Nagel s 9-for-10 performance from the line against Montana State marked season highs by an Aggie in both free throws made and attempted, and were the most in a game by a UC Davis player since Alyson Doherty finished 11-for-15 from the stripe against UC Irvine on March 7, DEAD-EYE AGS: There are very few teams in the country this season that have been more accurate from the field than UC Davis -- well, only eight to be exact. The Aggies rank ninth in the nation (as of Nov. 26) with a.493 field goal percentage, trailing only Maryland (.535), Michigan (.528), Baylor (.502), Duke (.502), Providence (.502), South Carolina (.502), Mississippi State (.498), and Florida State (.493). STRONG AS A BERTSCH: Dating back to last season, UC Davis sophomore Morgan Bertsch has reached double figures in each of her last 12 games, averaging 17.8 ppg and shooting just.637 (82-for-129) from the floor during that stretch. CAN T MISS: After ranking No. 7 in the NCAA with a.582 field goal percentage at the end of last season, Bertsch has picked up right where she left off to tip off the season, entering Sunday s game ranked No. 21 in the NATION after shooting.632 (24-for-38) from the floor in the first four games. FOUR-FOR-FOUR: With their performances on Wednesday night against Montana State, junior Dani Nafekh and sophomore Morgan Bertsch, are the only two Aggies to open the season with double-digit point totals in each of the team s first four games. Junior Pele Gianotti, who was among the group through three games, fell from the ranks after being held to just eight points against the Bobcats. SPREADING THE WEALTH: For the first time this season, UC Davis finished with fewer than four players with double-digit points on Wednesday against Montana State, ending the night with only three in the eight-point victory. The Aggies have won their last 11 games (including a 7-0 mark last year) when they four-or-more players finish in double figures dating back to a, 73-70, loss to San Francisco on Dec. 2, SHARING IS CARING: With the holiday season upon us, it s only right that the Aggies are thinking of others before themselves, entering Sunday s contest against Hofstra with four players ranked among the top 15 in the Big West Conference in assists: Dani Nafekh is second at 5.0 apg (No. 69 in the NATION), Kourtney Eaton is tied for sixth at 3.3 apg, and Pele Gianotti and Morgan Bertsch are tied for 13th at 2.5 apg. Overall, as a team, UC Davis stands second in the Big West at 16.5 apg, while also standing tops in the league with a 1.1 assist-to-turnover ratio. SHE CAN DISH IT OUT: Fresh off a season that saw junior Dani Nafekh set a school single-season Division I Era record with 130 assists last season, the Oakville, Ontario, Canada, native has picked up right where she left off through the first four games this season, recording 20 assists and averaging 5.0 apg. The total gives her 216 for her career, making her only the fifth UC Davis player to reach that plateau in the program s Division I history, joining Hana Asano (278), Blair Shinoda (223), Alyson Doherty (214), and Celia Marfone (206), while placing her 58 shy of Jessica Campbell ( , ) for 10th all-time. BLOCK PARTY: The Aggies will be your hosts. UC Davis tied a season high with seven swats in the win over Montana State, matching the mark set earlier this year against Holy Names on Nov. 13. HOW BOUT THEM AGGIES?: UC Davis returns seven letter winners overall and three starters off of last season s squad that finished overall and advanced all the way to the Big West Conference Tournament championship game as the No. 4 seed, including upsetting top-seeded UC Riverside in the semifinals -- a team that finished the regular season a perfect 16-0 in conference play. Gone are all-conference selections Alyson Doherty (first team) and Celia Marfone (honorable mention), but the Aggies return leading scorer Morgan Bertsch, who averaged 13.9 ppg en route to second-team honors as well as a spot on the all-freshman squad, and honorable mention selection Pele Gianotti, who averaged 11.5 points and 5.2 rebounds per game and ranked among the top 15 in the Big West in six different categories. HSU JOINS THE ROSTER: UC Davis picked up another newcomer for its roster prior to the start of the season, welcoming walk-on Kaitlyn Hsu to the Aggie family. Hsu, a four-year letter winner at Northwood HS in Irvine, Calif., is a neurobiology, physiology, and behavior major who averaged better than 14 points per game during her senior season, while earning All-CIF and All-Pacific Coast League honors as a junior, setting school records in scoring (20.5 ppg) and three-pointers (70). AGGIES RECEIVE HIGH PRAISE IN PRESEASON POLLS: The UC Davis women s basketball team received high praise from the coaches and media, picked to finish second by the Big West Conference head coaches and fourth by the media during the according to the league s preseason polls released on Oct. 25. BERTSCH EARNS PRESEASON HONORS: UC Davis sophomore Morgan Bertsch was one of six student-athletes named to the league s preseason all-conference team -- the fourth consecutive season that the Aggies have had a player so honored. Bertsch becomes the fifth UC Davis player to earn a spot on the preseason all-conference squad, joining two-time preseason honorees Haylee Donaghe, Paige Mintun, and Sydnee Fipps, as well as 2015 selection, Alyson Doherty. TOURNEY-TESTED SCHEDULE: UC Davis is scheduled to play a total of 12 contests against teams that reached the postseason a year ago, including road contests at Final Four participant Oregon State (Dec. 14) and NCAA regional finalist Stanford (Dec. 4). Aside from the Beavers and Cardinal, the Aggies will also take on NCAA Tournament participants San Francisco, Jacksonville, and Big West Tournament champion Hawai i, and face-off against WNIT qualifiers UC Riverside, Long Beach State, Montana State, Saint Mary s, and Hofstra. The Pride advanced the furthest of any of the WNIT qualifiers on UC Davis schedule, reaching the quarterfinals before falling to eventual tournament runner-up, and Atlantic Sun Conference rival, Florida Gulf Coast. LET S PLAY TWO: Harkening back to their old Division II days, the Aggies will join the men s team on the floor at the Pavilion for a quartet of home doubleheaders this season -- all during Big West play -- while preceeding the UC Davis men for a pair on the road at Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara on Feb. 2 and 4, respectively. In a rematch of last year s Big West Tournament championship game, the Aggies host Hawai i on Jan. 7 (men vs. Cal Poly), UC Davis welcomes Cal State Fullerton on Jan. 28 (men vs. UC Irvine), face-off against UC Irvine on Feb. 11 (men vs. UC Riverside), and close out the home schedule with a Senior Day battle against UC Santa Barbara on Feb. 25 (men vs. Long Beach State). HOME, SWEET HOME: UC Davis women s basketball fans will be able to get their fill of the Aggies to start the season, as they will play eight of their first 10 games on Bob Hamilton Court in The Pavilion before embarking on a six-game road-trip to close out the calendar year. It s an almost unheard-of stretch to start the season for UC Davis, which hasn t opened with this many games at home to open a campaign since the season when the Aggies also opened with eight of their first 10 at home, finishing 8-2 in those games. STATE OF THE AGGIES: Nearly half of the UC Davis women s basketball roster is made up of players from outside the state of California -- the highest number of out-of-state student-athletes in the program s Division I history. The six out-of-staters have a decided Pacific Northwest tilt as the Aggie coaching staff has successfully mined the state of Oregon for three players (Pele Gianotti, Marly Anderson, and Emma Gibb), while two (Kourtney and Karley Eaton) hail from the state of Washington. SEEING DOUBLE: Karley (older by one minute) and Kourtney Eaton are believed to be only the second set of sisters to take the floor together in the history of the women s basketball program, joining Dru and Rachelle Hanft during the 1999 campaign. Taking it one step further, both the Eaton s and Hanft s are identical twins. BY THE NUMBERS: Despite the loss of two of its top four scorers from a season ago, UC Davis returns nearly two-thirds of its offense statistically for the season, bringing back 65% (1,416 of 2,191) of its total points, 60 percent (720 of 1,198) of its rebounds, 73 percent (382 of 526) of its assists, 66 percent (520 of 788) of its field goals, 76 percent (153 of 201) of its three-pointers, and 54 percent (223 of 414) of its made free throws. As an assistant and associate head coach, she turned UC Davis into an immediate force in the Big West Conference by implementing one of the most difficult offensive schemes in the game. In her five seasons as head coach, Jennifer Gross has continued the tradition of excellence instilled in her throughout her entire Aggie career. Named head coach of the women s basketball program in October of 2010, Gross officially began her first year at the helm during the season, immediately leading the Aggies to 17 wins and their third consecutive postseason berth (and fourth in five years) with a bid in the WNIT. Under her tutelage, UC Davis has been a perennial contender in the Big West, advancing to the conference tournament in five straight seasons, working up from first-round berths in her first two years to an appearance in the tournament championship game in the program s first showing in the league s title game since the Aggies won the tournament and advanced to the NCAA s in As the program s offensive coordinator, she implemented a Princeton-style offense, building it from the ground up. Using the fundamentals of sharp cuts, smart passes, and an unprec- edented level of teamwork, the Aggies have been able to give opponents fits with their precision and execution. That has paid off as UC Davis has led the league in field goal percentage in two of the last three seasons (finishing second in 2016) and paced the Aggies to the top of the three-point shooting charts in During her tenure as head coach, Gross has coached 10 players to a total of 16 All-Big West honors -- including three-time first-team all-conference performer Sydnee Fipps, who became only the second Aggie student-athlete to accomplish the feat (Paige Mintun, ) and only one of 11 players in the history of the Big West Conference to earn first-team honors at least three times in a career. Fipps eventually ended her career as the program s all-time scoring leader at the Division I level and second on the school s all-time list with 1,636 career points. All told, since returning to her alma mater in , Gross has helped establish the foundation of UC Davis successful transition to the Division I level, helping lead the Aggies to 191 victories, the program s first-ever berth in the NCAA Tournament (2011), three berths in the WNIT (2008, 2010, and 2012), and a.526 ( ) winning percentage, in 12 seasons. In addition, 18 student-athletes have gone on to earn a total of 30 all-conference honors -- including nine first-team awards, 11 players have been named the league s player of the week, six have been honored on the conference s all-freshman team -- including 2009 Freshman of the Year Lauren Juric, and seven student-athletes have led the league in various statistical categories at the end of the year. In addition to her coaching responsibilities, Gross has been the recruiting coordinator for the Aggies since her arrival in As a former three-year CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII honoree, Gross knows what it takes both athletically and academically to succeed at UC Davis. Off the court, and in the classroom, the Aggies have shined, led by Jessica Campbell, who was a second-team CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII honoree in 2008, while also earning a pair of Division I Independent Women s Basketball All-Academic Team honors in 2005 and 2006, a Big West All-Academic Team honor as a senior, as well as the Hubert Heitman Award as the department s Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year in As a student-athlete from at UC Davis, Gross set school records for career assists (448), steals (300) and three-pointers (163), the first of which still stands. Additionally, she ranks ninth all-time at UC Davis in career scoring, compiling 1,243 points. As a senior, Gross led the Aggies to a school-record 29-3 mark and the school s first appearance at the Division II Elite Eight tournament. UC Davis finished third at the national tourney, beating Bentley in the consolation final. For her part, she won Kodak All-America honorable mention honors and was selected to the Northern California Athletic Conference first team for the second time. However, perhaps her finest achievement was her participation in 101 victories during her four-year career, the winningest span in program history. Gross graduated from UC Davis in 1997, earning her bachelor s degree in organizational studies. She earned her master s degree in Sports Coaching from the United States Sports Academy in After her collegiate career, Gross went on to play professionally in Denmark (July 1997-Apr. 98) and Israel (July-Dec. 1998). She was inducted into the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame in Gross married UC Davis assistant coach Joe Teramoto in 2010 when they were both assistants on former coach Sandy Simpson s staff.
