Following the game, the Aztecs will play their next two games on the road (next home contest is Nov. 10). n Saturday s contest is the annual homecoming game for the University and has been designated as a Red Out, with fans encouraged to wear red to the game. n Saturday marks the 100th game with Rocky Long as SDSU head coach. The three-time conference coach of the year, who has led the Aztecs to three Mountain West titles is an impressive at SDSU, including an eye-popping 36-7 in his last 43 contests. The only other SDSU head coach to lead the Aztecs for at least 100 games was Don Coryell ( , 125 games). n The Aztecs and Spartans are meeting for the 42nd time with SDSU owning a edge. San Diego State has won five straight in the series, leads in games played in San Diego and is 9-1 against the Spartans at SDCCU Stadium (formerly Jack Murphy and Qualcomm). n As previously noted, SDSU has won five straight games (tied for the 11th-longest active win streak). Other notable win streaks include: six straight conference wins (tied for 6th nationally) and six straight home wins (tied for 15th nationally). n San Diego State s 5-1 record is rated as the 20th best strength of record according to ESPN. This week, the Aztecs have 53 points in the AP Top 25 poll (good for a tie for 27th position) and 71 points in the Coaches Poll (29th). n Once again this season, Long and defensive coordinator Zach Arnett have assembled one of the nation s best defenses. The unit ranks among the national leaders in rushing defense (87.2, 5th), total defense (308.8, 12th) and points allowed (19.3, 26th). n No SDSU opponent has accumulated 400 yards of total offense this season. San Diego State s streak of holding six consecutive opponents to less than 400 yards is tied for the fifth-longest active FBS streak (leader: Michigan, 13). n The Aztecs are 36-7 in their last 43 overall games and 24-4 in their last 28 games against MW opponents. n San Diego State is 4-0 this season in games decided by one score. That figure is tied for the most close wins (=<8) without a loss (also: Notre Dame and Northern Illinois). The Aztecs have won eight of their last nine (8-1) games decided by eight points or less. n The Aztecs have won 25 consecutive games when owning a TO advantage. That is the nation s longest active streak, five more than the second-longest streak (Oklahoma, 20). n Last Friday, San Diego State defeated Air Force, at SDCCU Stadium. It was the eighth consecutive victory for the Aztecs over the Falcons, the longest active streak in the FBS. SDSU limited Air Force to just 276 total yards. n Junior quarterback Ryan Agnew improved to 4-0 as a starter, passing for a career-high 213 yards on just nine completions (23.67 yards per completion). It was the eighth time in the last four seasons that an SDSU QB has passed for at least 200 yards. On the game-winning drive, Agnew accounted for 93 of the 94 yards, going 2-for-4 for 61 yards and a TD and adding a career-long 32- yard rush on third-and-9 at the SDSU 7-yard line. THE ROCKY LONG SHOW This season, the Rocky Long Show will air live weekly on Wednesday evenings from 6-7 p.m. PT on XTRA AZTEC FOOTBALL WITH ROCKY LONG San Diego State football head coach Rocky Long and FOX Sports San Diego have announced a coaches show for the fifth straight season. Aztec Football with Rocky Long will air each Thursday following live programming on FOX Sports San Diego. The weekly show will give unprecedented access to the SDSU program and Long, the Mountain West's all-time leader in victories and two-time MW Coach of the Year. Aztec Football with Rocky Long, which will be hosted by Mike Pomeranz, will consist of player and coach features, behind the scenes footage, X's and O's with Long, a preview of the upcoming game, a recap of the last game and much more. 3 SAN DIEGO STATE GAME NOTES / vs. San José State / Oct. 20, 2018 page 3 n Junior linebacker Kyhava Tezino was named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week and sophomore linebacker Kaelin Himphill earned league special teams player of the week honors following the victory over Air Force. Out of the 18 possible awards (offensive, defensive and special teams) for the six games that SDSU has played this season, a San Diego State player has won seven times (John Baron II special teams three times, Darren Hall defensive twice, and Tezino (defensive) and Himphill (special teams). n Excluding the week they were idle (Oct. 1), an Aztec has won the special teams award four consecutive weeks and the defensive award three straight weeks. n Tezino recorded a season-high 15 tackles (10 solo) in the victory over Air Force. For the season, he leads the team in tackles (54), tackles for loss (5.5) and sacks (3.0). n San Diego State s 5-1 start is even more impressive when considering the Aztecs have had 13 entire games missed to would-be starters this season (24 when you include parts of games). Of those 24 games, 19 have been on the offensive side of the ball and include injuries to the school s all-time winningest quarterback Christian Chapman and preseason Maxwell Award Watch List member Juwan Washington. n Since the start of the 2013 campaign when the league split into two divisions, San Diego State (33-9) owns the best record in Mountain West action. Boise State (33-10) is second. n San Diego State is one of only seven schools nationally to record 10 or more victories in each of the last three seasons (Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, San Diego State and Wisconsin). n San Diego State is one of the youngest teams in the nation. Tezino was chosen as the MW Defensive Player of the Week, while Himphill was named the MW Special Teams Player of the Week. It is the first MW weekly accolades for the duo, who helped the Aztecs (5-1, 2-0 MW) beat Air Force, 21-17, Friday night at SDCCU Stadium. Out of the 18 possible awards (offensive, defensive and special teams) for the six games that SDSU has played this season, a San Diego State player has won seven times (John Baron II special teams three times, Darren Hall defensive twice, and Tezino (defensive) and Himphill (special teams) today). Excluding the week they were idle (Oct. 1), an Aztec has won the special teams award four consecutive weeks and the defensive award three straight weeks. A Los Angeles native, Tezino had a game and season-high 15 tackles, including 10 solo stops, while adding a pass breakup. Tezino helped limit an AFA offense that came into the weekend averaging 31.4 points, rushing yards and total yards per game to just 17 points, 214 rushing yards and 276 total yards. The 17 points were Air Force s fewest of the season and fewest since scoring 14 against Wyoming on Nov. 11, Tezino s 15 tackles were the second most of his career (17 vs. Army West Point on Dec. 23, 2017). He recorded his second double-digit tackle game of the season and fourth of his career (all over his last eight games), while leading the team in tackles for the eighth time of his career (all over the last 11 games). On the season, Tezino leads SDSU in tackles (54), solo tackles (28), assisted tackles (26), tackles for loss (5.5), sacks (3.0) and quarterback hurries (11). Over the last 11 games since Tezino became a starting linebacker, he has recorded 110 tackles and 11.5 tackles for loss. Himphill, meanwhile, came up with arguably the biggest play of the game when he blocked a punt with 16 seconds left in the first half. Down, 9-7, teammate Trenton Thompson was able to pick up the ball and get into the end zone to put San Diego State on top, 14-9, heading into intermission. It was the Aztecs first blocked punt since Kameron Kelly blocked one against UNLV on Sept. 27, 2014, and their first blocked punt return for a touchdown since Freddy Keiaho did so against New Mexico on Oct. 22, The Aztecs now have 20 special teams touchdowns (14 kick return, five punt return and one punt block) in the Rocky Long era (since 2011). Himphill has played in five of the team s six games on the season, all on special teams. ROCKY LONG HITS THE CENTURY MARK Saturday marks the 100th game of the Rocky Long era (counts time as a head coach only). The three-time conference coach of the year has already left his mark on the Aztec program. In addition to his success at SDSU, Long is the all-time winningest coach in Mountain West history and owns a career record of Below are a few of the many accomplishments and notables from Long s time as head coach. n Has compiled a record at SDSU. The 69 victories are the second most in school history (Don Coryell, 104) and are nearly double that of the previous three head coaches (Brady Hoke, Chuck Long and Tom Craft), combined (35). n Long has guided San Diego State to seven bowl games in his first seven seasons as head coach and has been part of eight straight bowl appearances for SDSU. That equals the total number of bowl appearances the Aztecs had in their previous 87 seasons prior (1921 through 2009). n The Aztecs have 21 conference championships but had only two in the 37 years from 1975 until Long has guided SDSU to conference championships in three of the last six seasons (2012, 2015 and 2016). n San Diego State has nine victories over AP Division I nationally-ranked teams in school history. Baron is also one of five kickers with three field goals of at least 50 yards and one of three that is a perfect 3-for-3 from 50 or more yards. For his career, Baron has made 43 of 50 field goal attempts. Among active FBS kickers with at least 20 made field goals, Baron ranks second in field goal percentage (.860) and 16th in field goals per game (1.30). At SDSU, Baron ranks second in field goal percentage (.860), third in PATs (119), tied for fourth in PAT percentage (.983) and fifth in field goals (43). Baron has already set the school record for most field goals from 50+ yards in a single season (3) and in a career (4). Here is a look at Baron s recent performances in games. n At Boise State, Baron was 2-for-2 in field goals, with makes from 36 and 41 yards, made his only extra point attempt and had four touchbacks on five kickoffs (his non-touchback resulted in the Broncos starting at its own 26-yard line). n In the victory over Eastern Michigan, Baron was 3-for-4 on field goal attempts and 2-for-2 on PATs. The senior hit a 34-yarder in the first quarter to put SDSU on top, a 50-yarder to tie the game at with 1:16 left in the fourth quarter and a 38-yarder to win the game in overtime. Baron also kicked off five times for 275 yards (55.0 avg.) and four touchbacks. If you take away the one squib he kicked off, he would ve averaged a perfect 65.0 average (four for 260 yards) on the other four attempts. n The week before, Baron helped the Aztecs down No. 23/25 Arizona State on Saturday, making both of his field goal attempts and both PATs. Baron s first field goal was a career-long 54-yard kick, which put SDSU up, 17-14, midway through the third quarter and gave San Diego State a lead it would not relinquish. The 54-yard field goal is tied for the second longest in school history. He later added a 36-yard field goal to give the Aztecs a lead. Since the beginning of the 2015 season, the Aztecs rank third nationally in rushing yards allowed per game (112.6) and third in rushing yards per attempt (3.2). In 2018, San Diego State is fourth in rushing yards per carry (2.5) and fifth in rushing yards allowed per game (87.2). In four of the six games this season, the opposition is averaging 1.8 yards per carry or less. That has been on display so far this season. In the opener, the Aztecs held 13th-ranked Stanford to 50 yards rushing on 28 carries for a 1.8 average and no rushing touchdowns. In Stanford s other five games to date, the Cardinal has rushed 138 times for 464 yards, 3.4 per rush average. and 92.8 yards per game. THE NATION S BEST LINEBACKER Junior linebacker Kyahva Tezino has not only established himself as a leader on the defensive side of the ball, he is beginning to assert himself as one of the most impactful players in college football. This past week, Tezino recorded his second consecutive game with nine defensive stops (as defined by Pro Football Focus). Those nine stops were tied for the most in the country this past week. In the past two weeks, Tezino s 18 defensive stops are not only the most among FBS linebackers, but are more than any other defender in the country across all position groups. For the season, his overall run stop percentage of 16.8 percent now ranks tops among all linebackers in the nation and his 18 quarterback pressures is second. In the road victory over Boise State, he may have been the most dominant player on the field. Tezino was strong against the run with (according to Pro Football Focus) nine defensive stops, with six coming on run attempts. He performed well in coverage as well with just 21 total receiving yards allowed in coverage on three receptions. Once again, he was sensational providing pressure with one sack, four quarterback hits and two hurries. His five combined sacks/qb hits Saturday were the most by any linebacker in the nation that week and Tezino now has more combined sacks/qb hits (10) than any other LB in the nation. MEET CHASE JASMIN Sophomore running back Chase Jasmin is slated to earn his third start on Saturday against the Spartans. A native of Agoura Hills, Calif., Jasmin started the season as the backup to Juwan Washington, but has moved up the depth chart following the injury to the Maxwell Award Watch List candidate against Eastern Michigan. Through six games, Jasmin has proved to be more than an adequate backup but has shown abilities seen only in elite backs. Although he has 87 carries for 381 yards, a 4.4 average, and three touchdowns this season, he has made the most of his opportunities. Below are a few notes on Jasmin s performance to date: n According to Pro Football Focus, Jasmin ranks second in Elusive Rating (98.2) among Mountain West running backs this season. n Of his 87 carries this season, he has 25 avoided tackles. That is the third-highest figure in the Mountain West despite starting just two games (Juwan Washington is still second with 28 despite not playing since the second quarter of the Sept. 22nd game). n He already has five carries of 15+ yards, meaning that he logs a rush of at least 15 yards every 17.4 carries. In addition, he also has posted nine carries of at least 10 yards this season. n Through the first two games of this season, Jasmin had played a total of 70 offensive snaps in his career. That has changed recently as he posted career highs in the category in three consecutive games vs. Arizona State (26 snaps) and Eastern Michigan (32 snaps), Boise State (53 snaps) and Air Force (36 snaps). DEATH, TAXES AND TRENTON THOMPSON Sophomore safety Trenton Thompson is playing the best football of his career. He has played 238 snaps through six games this season after playing a total of 61 snaps entering the season. Tidbits on the ultra reliable Thompson: n Thompson has 28 tackles this season (3rd on the team) with zero missed tackles. n In 2018, Thompson has more tackles without a missed tackle than any other safety in the Mountain West. n In his career, the sophomore has played 299 defensive snaps and has been credited with just one missed tackle (Nov. 5, 2016 vs. Hawai i). n As if one missed tackle was not impressive enough, Thompson also has been whistled for one career penalty. AGNEW MAKING HIMSELF AT HOME AT QB Junior quarterback Ryan Agnew is off to a 4-0 start as a starter at the position for San Diego State, leading the Aztecs to victories over No. 23/25 Arizona State, Eastern Michigan, at rv/no. 24 Boise State and Air Force. n Prior to entering the game against Sacramento State on Sept. 8 (for the injured Christian Chapman), Agnew had attempted a total of nine passes and no more than three in a given game. n In his four games as a starter, Agnew is 41-of-86 (50.0 percent) for 631 yards, four touchdowns and two interception. Rashaad Penny ran for 234 yards and three touchdowns, and Juwan Washington ran for 134 yards and two touchdowns as San Diego State cruised to a 52-7 win at San José State. Chase Jasmin added 82 yards and a touchdown as the Aztecs (8-2, 4-2 MW) set a program record with 554 yards on the ground. SDSU built a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and took a 35-0 advantage into the halftime break. The Spartans scored on a trick play with a 54-yard pass from wide receiver Tre Walker to Justin Holmes to kick off the third quarter, before San Diego State scored the final 17 points of the game. Penny had touchdown runs of 13 yards and 82 yards in the first quarter, and a 64-yard scamper on his only attempt of the second half, while Washington scored on a pair of 1-yard runs in the first and second quarter, respectively. Jasmin scored from nine yards out in the third quarter as the Aztecs six rushing touchdowns were their most in a game since Nick Bawden scored his first career touchdown - an 8-yard pass from Christian Chapman - and John Baron II made a 30-yard field goal to close out the scoring for SDSU. Besides the 52-7 score, San Diego State dominated in almost every facet in the game, owning a advantage in total yards, lead in rushing yards and 43:19-16:41 advantage in time of possession. Additionally, the Aztecs converted 11 of 13 third downs - the best percentage (84.6) in a FBS game this season - and scored 21 points off three Spartan (1-9, 0-5 MW) turnovers. SDSU had two 100-yard rushers for the 28th time in program history and seventh time in its last 20 games, as Penny and Washington became San Diego State s 19th different combination to break 100 yards in the same game. Additionally, the Aztecs 448-yard margin of total offense and 521-yard rushing margin were Division I era (since 1969) records, and their 31 first downs were their most since SDSU did not punt for the first time since 2010 and for just the third time since at least Chapman was 4-for-5 with 77 yards and a touchdown and Ryan Agnew completed both of his pass attempts for 17 yards. San Diego State s seven pass attempts were its fewest in the DI era, while its pass efficiency rating was the third best. After the Aztecs lost five yards on a sweep, Agnew quickly regrouped on the next snap, connecting with a wide-open Houston over the middle, as the junior tight end left several Falcon tacklers in his wake en route to the end zone. After forcing a punt on Air Force's ensuing possession, Parker Baldwin extinguished the visitors' final threat minutes later with an interception at the SDSU 45 with 3:10 remaining in the contest. Despite completing just 9-of-25 attempts with one interception, Agnew finished with a career-high 213 passing yards, improving to 4-0 as the Aztecs' starting quarterback. For the second straight game, Chase Jasmin led the SDSU rushing attack with 70 yards and one touchdown on 18 carries, while Fred Trevillion paced the receiving corps with three catches for 94 yards. Later, Air Force put together its longest foray of the night, marching 80 yards in nine plays, punctuated by Ronald Cleveland's 12- yard sprint around left end that put the visitors up 9-7 with 5:13 left in the second quarter. In addition to being the signal-caller over San Diego State s most successful period in program history, the Carlsbad native is in extremely rare company. Below are a few of his accomplishments. n Chapman is 24-7 as a starter. The 77.4 winning percentage is the highest in San Diego State s Division I era (min. 15 starts.). n With 24 career victories, Chapman surpassed Ryan Lindley (23), current SDSU defensive GA coach, for the Chapman most wins as a starter at quarterback in the Division I era for the Aztecs. n Chapman has the longest active streak in FBS in games with fewer than two interceptions as a starting quarterback at 31. n His streak of 31 straight quarterback starts without more than one interception is the second-longest streak since 2012, only trailing Navy s Keenan Reynolds (45 games). n Chapman has 4,528 career passing yards. That ranks 14th on the school s career list. n San Diego State is 11-0 when he has a passer rating of or higher. n Chapman has nine career games with multiple touchdown passes and has never thrown more than one interception in a game (38 career games). The Aztecs are coming off three straight seasons with at least 10 wins. n San Diego State is one of 17 teams nationally to play in a bowl game each of the last eight seasons ( ) and one of just two from the Group of 5 (also Boise State). n With 10 victories last season, San Diego State has recorded its third straight campaign with double-digit wins. It marks the seventh time in the Division I era and the 10 time in school history that it has recorded a double-digit win season. BULLET NOTES - OFFENSE n San Diego State returns seven starters on offense this season - senior quarterback Christian Chapman, sophomore center Dominic Gudino, junior left guard Daishawn Dixon, sophomore right guard Keith Ismael, senior right tackle Ryan Pope, sophomore left tackle Tyler Roemer, senior wide receiver Fred Trevillion. Of those seven players, only three are seniors (also two juniors, three sophomores). n Jeff Horton is in his eighth season at San Diego State and his fourth as SDSU s offensive coordinator (served the previous four seasons as an assistant head coach and running backs coach). As part of the lease terms, SDSU will pay $1.1 million per season and all of the game-day operating costs associated with the university's use of the stadium, where it has been a tenant since Additionally, all net concessions and parking revenue generated during Aztec football games will go directly to the City to assist in covering the operating costs of the stadium year-round. In addition to the annual rent and revenue obligations, SDSU will also assist the City in marketing the stadium and finding additional revenue-generating events. The two-year lease extension provides SDSU with a short-term solution until the long-term future of the stadium site is determined. Hundreds of thousands of fans attended SDSU football games last season when the Aztecs went 10-2 during the regular season and played in the Armed Forces Bowl.

Trends The Aztecs had scored in 21 consecutive quarters, the second-longest active streak in FBS (Louisville, 25), before being held scoreless in the second quarter. SDSU did not start with the ball for just the 13th time in the last 85 games. San Diego State lost the coin toss for just the 25th time over the last 54 games. The Aztecs have now gone 145 games without suffering a shutout (Nov. 18, 2006 at TCU), which is the second-longest streak among current Mountain West schools (Boise State at 265). SDSU held its opponent scoreless on its opening drive for the 31st time over the last 39 games and for the 32nd time since 2015 (42 games). Aztecs Fall in Opener at No. 13/13 Stanford STANFORD, Calif. -- San Diego State kept Heisman Trophy candidate Bryce Love in check, but unable to stop the K.J. Costello-JJ Arcega-Whiteside connection in a loss in the 2018 opener at Stanford Stadium. Costello threw for 332 yards and four touchdowns, and Arcega-Whiteside caught six passes for 226 yards and three scores to give the Cardinal (1-0) its 20th consecutive non-conference home win. The Aztecs (0-1), who last year defeated Stanford, 20-17, in San Diego, held Love to just 29 yards on 18 carries (1.6 avg.). Love, who entered the game with at least 100 rushing yards in 14 of the last 15 games, posted the lowest average of his career with a minimum of five carries. Committed to stop the run, SDSU held the Cardinal to just 50 yards total on the ground on 28 attempts (1.8 avg.), its fewest in a home game since Sept. 29, Costello, however, connected on touchdown passes of 38, 19 and 80 yards to Arcega-Whiteside, and later on a 19- yard strike to Colby Parkinson. After a slow start, San Diego State used a methodical 8-play, 92-yard drive to get on the scoreboard late in the first quarter on a 4-yard run by Juwan Washington. Washington had 84 yards alone on the drive, including a 40-yarder which got the Aztecs into Stanford territory for the first time of the game. After exchanging punts for the next few series, SDSU was forced to start at its own 1-yard line when Jack Bailey s 63- yard punt went out-of-bounds. Three plays later, quarterback Christian Chapman was sacked in the end zone for the safety. Late in the second quarter, it appeared San Diego State would have a chance to add to its 7-2 lead when Andrew Aleki deflected a Costello pass into the hands of Noble Hall. Hall started running the other way, but Cardinal wide receiver Trenton Irwin raced back, forced a fumble and jumped on the loose ball, giving Stanford some life. The Cardinal took advantage in just three plays when Costello found Arcega-Whiteside in the end zone from 38 yards out, taking a 9-7 lead into halftime. Costello stretched its lead to 16-7 on its first drive of the third quarter as Costello found a wide-open Arcega-Whiteside in the end zone with a 19-yard pass. The Aztecs mounted a 10-play, 62-yard drive of their own, mainly through the air, culminating with a 30-yard field goal by John Baron II. Chapman was 5-for-7 on the scoring drive for 61 yards. On Stanford s ensuing drive and facing a punt on 3rd and 15, Costello rolled out to his left and fired a deep pass to Arcega-Whiteside, who caught it over a fallen Kyree Woods and raced 80 yards for the touchdown. Following a successful 2-point conversion, the Cardinal ran its lead to SDSU got back into Stanford territory, but was stopped on a 4th and 1 on the 32-yard line as the fourth quarter began. The Cardinal put the game away on its next drive with Costello s fourth touchdown pass of the game found Parkinson from 19 yards out. Costello finished the game 21 of 31 for 332 yard and four touchdowns. Washington led San Diego State s rushing attack with 158 yards on 24 carries (6.6 avg.), the sixth-highest total by an Aztec back in a season opener and the eighth most against a nationally ranked opponent. Rocky Long recorded his school-record 18th second-half comeback victory as coach at SDSU (No. 2 is Claude Gilbert at 13). SDSU had a 100-yard rusher in its seventh straight game (eight, 100-yard rushers total), and has one in 24 of its last 29 games since 2016 (31, 100-yard rushers total) and 33 of the 43 games since Jeff Horton took over as the offensive coordinator in 2015 (43, 100-yard rushers total). San Diego State improved to 16-3 in its last 19 home games dating back to Oct. 3, During that stretch, the Aztecs have outscored the opposition, SDSU won its fifth straight home opener. The Aztecs improved to 13-4 in their last 17 games, 19-6 in their last 25 and 32-7 in their last 39. SDSU had its streak of games with one or less interceptions snapped at 40. It was the longest active streak in FBS (second was 21) and second-longest streak in FBS since Team Notes San Diego State had lost nine consecutive games when trailing after three quarters prior to tonight. The Aztecs last win when trailing after three quarters came on Nov. 23, 2013 against Boise State (W, in OT). SDSU s 15 passing first downs were its most since recording 15 against Air Force on Nov. 21, SDSU s 271 passing yards were its most since throwing for 291 in the 2016 opener against New Hampshire (Sept. 13, 2016). Aztecs Rally Past Sacramento State, SAN DIEGO -- Juwan Washington rushed for 156 yards and a career-high three touchdowns, as San Diego State rallied for a triumph over Sacramento State before a crowd of 45,755 at SDCCU Stadium. Washington, who also finished with a personal-best 36 carries, posted two of his scores in the final four minutes and change to help the Aztecs (1-1) capture their fifth straight home opener and win for the ninth time in their last 10 September games. SDSU was forced to overcome the loss of starting quarterback Christian Chapman, who completed 6-of-11 passes for 112 yards before leaving with 4:47 left in the second quarter due to a knee injury. Backup Ryan Agnew took over for the rest of the game, recording 159 yards on 11-for-17 passing all career highs. Trailing at the 9:18 mark of the fourth quarter, Agnew directed the Aztecs on a 13-play, 82-yard scoring drive, punctuated by Washington's four-yard scamper into the end zone. Moments later, Agnew hit tight end Parker Houston for a two-point conversion that put the host school up for good with 4:05 to go. The Aztec defense displayed its mettle on the ensuing possession, sacking Sacramento State quarterback Kevin Thomson on two occasions, including one by Kyahva Tezino on a 4th-and-3 situation that gave the ball back to SDSU on the Hornet 25 with 2:57 to go. On the second play after the possession change, Washington hit pay dirt with a 20-yard burst up the middle that put the game out of reach. Earlier in the first quarter, San Diego State opened the scoring on its second drive of the contest, marching 69 yards in nine plays, with Washington darting in from five yards out to provide the Aztecs a 7-0 edge at the 4:39 mark. SDSU overcame an 11-yard sack and an ineligible receiver penalty, as Washington uncorked a 30-yard run on a 2nd-and-26 situation to give the Aztecs a first down at the Sacramento State 18. SDSU extended its advantage to 10-0 early in the second quarter, capitalizing on a short Hornet punt after John Baron drilled a career-long 52-yard field goal, which is tied for the eight-longest in program history. Sacramento State responded with their longest foray of the game, consuming 7:26 of the clock before BJ Perkinson capped the 14-play, 75-yard drive with a 1-yard plunge, which narrowed the gap to 10-7 at the 6:07 mark. The Aztecs salvaged another field goal on their next drive, as Chapman exited after two plays. On his first snap of the night, Agnew completed a 13-yard pass to Dedeaux and later flashed his mobility with 14-yard scramble down the left sideline on a 3rd-and-6 play. The march stalled at this juncture, but Baron split the uprights from 32 yards out to give the host a 13-7 cushion heading into the locker room. The Hornets wasted no time cashing in on an Angew interception in the third quarter as Thomson found a wide-open Perkinson, who streaked past the Aztec defense for a 64-yard touchdown reception on the first play after the interception, giving the visitors their first lead of the night at with just under nine minutes remaining in the period. Aztecs Hold Off No. 23/25 Arizona St., SAN DIEGO -- After turning in a suffocating defensive performance for much of the second half, San Diego State weathered some anxious moments in the waning moments of a upset over No. 23/25 Arizona State on Sept. 15 at SDCCU Stadium. With the win, the Aztecs (2-1) defeated the Sun Devils for the second year in a row, improving to 4-1 against Pac-12 Conference teams since the start of the 2016 season after Parker Baldwin batted down a Hail Mary pass at the goal line. SDSU shredded the nation's leading defense against the run, rushing for a 311 yards on 58 attempts after ASU (2-1) entered the contest yielding just an average of 32.5 yards in its previous two games. For the second straight outing, the Aztecs also controlled the ball over 12 minutes longer than the opposition (36:05-23:55) to help key their win. Individually, Juwan Washington recorded a game-high 138 rushing yards on 27 carries with one touchdown, while Chase Jasmin added a career-best 112 yards on 19 attempts to go with one TD of his own, giving SDSU multiple 100- yard ground gainers for the 29th time in program history, as the Scarlet and Black improved to 28-1 all-time in that statistic. However, it was the Aztec defense that played a pivotal role, seizing the momentum after a critical fourth down stop at the SDSU 11 with 1:41 remaining in the second quarter. Trailing 14-7 after ASU scored on 1-yard sneak by quarterback Manny Wilkins, San Diego State managed just one first down before pinning the Sun Devils deep in their own territory on a 51-yard punt by Brandon Heicklen. Setting up shop on its own five-yard line, ASU drove deep into Aztec territory, aided by 43-yard completion from Wilkins to wide receiver Frank Darby before the SDSU defense came to life. Wilkins, who threw for 227 yards on 17-of- 22 passing up to that point, added another eight yards with a quick screen to Kyle Williams and third down. The Sun Devils passed up a short field-goal attempt, and Aztec defensive tackle Myles Cheatum made them pay with a four-yard sack of Wilkins on 4th-and-1. Aztecs Edge Eastern Michigan in OT, SAN DIEGO -- John Baron kicked three field goals, including a 38-yarder in overtime, to lift San Diego State to a victory over visiting Eastern Michigan on Sept. 22 at SDCCU Stadium. With just 1:16 remaining in the fourth quarter, Baron tied the game at on a 50-yarder before nailing the game-winner in the extra session, helping the Aztecs complete an unbeaten three-game homestand and improve to 3-1 on the year. The Eagles (2-2) won the overtime coin toss, but came up empty on the their only offensive possession, as defensive back Darren Hall intercepted a pass from quarterback Mike Glass at the SDSU 2. The Aztecs subsequently gained four yards on their next three plays to set up Baron s decisive kick. San Diego State threatened the turn the game into a blowout after taking a 17-3 lead in the second quarter on a 24- yard touchdown pass from Ryan Agnew to BJ Busbee with 9:03 remaining in the period. Juwan Washington put the Aztecs in striking range with a 36-yard scamper down the left sideline on a 3rd-and-2 situation before Agnew connected with a wide-open Busbee three plays later. However, EMU capitalized on an errant Agnew pass late in the quarter on an interception by Kevin McGill, who returned the ball 26 yards to the SDSU 34 with just 1:40 left before halftime. Glass entered the game in relief of starter Tyler Wiegers and quickly provided a spark for the Eagles, hitting Line Latu for 27 yards before plowing into the end zone on a sneak from two yards out on the next play, narrowing the gap to by intermission. With momentum on its side, EMU took the second half kickoff and marched 75 yards in 12 plays for the tying score. After lulling the Aztecs to sleep with nine consecutive runs, Arthur Jackson got behind the SDSU secondary and hauled in a 37-yard touchdown pass from Glass, knotting the game at Setting up shop at its own 14, EMU grinded out 14 yards on four straight rushes before Glass found Latu for another electrifying gain, this time for 54 yards down to the Aztec 18. Two additional runs moved the ball to the 8, but the SDSU defense stiffened, forcing an incomplete pass after a two-yard run, a false-start penalty and a short four-yard completion. EMU salvaged three points on the drive when Chad Ryland hit a 24-yard field goal with 3:18 remaining in regulation. After a short kickoff, the Aztecs took over at their own 42 and quickly advanced into Eagle territory, benefiting on a 15-yard pass interference penalty following an 11-yard pass completion to Ethan Dedeaux. On 2nd-and-10 from the EMU 32, Agnew scrambled to the right and appeared to hit tight end Kahale Warring for a first down near the 10-yard line, but officials ruled the junior signal-caller stepped out of bounds before the throw, and SDSU could not convert on the subsequent play. With just 1:16 left on the clock, Baron was summoned for the game-tying field goal attempt from 50 yards and the Aztec senior calmly delivered his third straight success from that distance or more this season. SDSU got the ball back once again after forcing an Eagle punt, but time ran out after Maxx Crosby sacked Agnew for an 11-yard loss back to the Aztec 29, which sent the game into overtime. In his second career start, Agnew completed 12-of-22 passes for a career-high 176 yards and a personal-best two touchdowns, including a 25-yard strike to Parker Houston early in the second quarter, which gave San Diego State a 10-3 lead. In addition, Jasmin ran for a game-high 94 yards on 16 carries, while Washington had his streak of 100-yard rushing games snapped at three, finishing with 61 yards on 12 attempts before exiting with an injury. Defense Leads Aztecs Past Boise State, BOISE, Idaho -- San Diego State used a dominating defense and a late touchdown run by true freshman Jordan Byrd to down Boise State, 19-13, in Boise. The Aztecs (4-1, 1-0 MW) sacked Bronco quarterback Brett Rypien four times and recorded three interceptions (two vs. Rypien), handing BS just its eighth loss at home since SDSU held a Boise State team, which came into the day averaging yards per game, to just 229 yards of total offense. It was the Broncos fewest amount of yards in a game since gaining 206 against No. 13 Michigan State on Aug. 31, 2012 and fewest in a home game since recording 203 vs. Utah State on Oct. 24, San Diego State held Rypien, the Mountain West Preseason Player of the Year, to 170 yards passing, completing 21 of 41 attempts with no touchdowns and two interceptions. The Aztecs got on the scoreboard early in the first quarter when cornerback Darren Hall picked off Rypien on the BS 33-yard line and ran it to the 24. Unable to get a first down, SDSU settled for a 36-yard field goal by John Baron II. San Diego State forced a 3 and out on Boise State s ensuing drive, but Ethan Dedeaux muffed a Quinn Skillin punt and the Broncos recovered it on the Aztec 4-yard line. Three plays later Alex Mattison punched it in from 1-yard out to put the Broncos on top, 7-3. Late in the first quarter, SDSU Warrior (safety) Tariq Thompson made a one-handed interception on a Rypien throw to give the ball back to San Diego State. The Aztecs got into BS territory, but BJ Busbee fumbled away the ball at the Boise State 14 after a catch from Ryan Agnew. After another 3 and out forced by SDSU, the Bronco punter Skillin dropped the snap, giving the visitors the ball on the 31-yard line. San Diego State got to the 4 on a 24-yard pass from Agnew to Kahale Warring and 3-yard gain by Chase Jasmin, but a pair of penalties, an incomplete pass and a sack pushed the Aztecs out of the red zone. SDSU had to once again settle for a 41-yard field goal by Baron. San Diego State recorded its third interception of the game midway through the second quarter when Kyhava Tezino pressured Chase Cord into throwing an interception to linebacker Ronley Lakalaka. This time, the Aztecs got into the end zone thanks to a pass interference penalty and a 2-yard touchdown run by Jasmin, making it BS made one last ditch effort to end the first half, converting a fourth-and-1 to get to the SDSU 31. After an incomplete pass, Hall sacked Rypien from his blind side, effectively putting Boise State out of field goal range and keeping the score at 13-7 at the half. Neither team scored in the third quarter, setting up an important final 15 minutes of play. On San Diego State s first drive of the fourth quarter, Byrd took a pitch on third-and-2 down the sidelines 72 yards for his first career touchdown. The score came on just his fourth career carry. After failing to convert the 2-point conversion, the Aztecs held a 19-7 lead. The Broncos made it interesting after putting together an 11-play, 73-yard drive, culminating in Mattison s second 1- yard touchdown run of the game. After missing the PAT, BS found itself down, Boise State forced a SDSU punt, but after an 8-yard pass from Rypien to CT Thomas, Rypien took an intentional grounding penalty. Two incompletions later, San Diego State was in victory formation, holding onto the win. Jasmin rushed for a hard-fought 78 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries, while Byrd ran for 76 yards and the 72- yard TD on three rushes. Agnew was 8-for-15 for 113 yards, including three passes for 57 yards to Fred Trevillion. San Diego State won its fifth straight game when playing a team exactly six days after another game (9-1 in last 10 games). The Aztecs claimed their eighth straight victory over Air Force, which is longest active win streak in the nation against the Falcons and longest win streak against AFA since Notre Dame won eight straight from SDSU won its 11th straight Friday home game (last home Friday loss was Nov. 20, 1970 against Long Beach State). Aztecs Beat Rain; Air Force, SAN DIEGO -- Ryan Agnew threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Parker Houston with 6:10 left in the game, as resilient San Diego State rallied for a gritty triumph over Air Force on a rainy Friday night at SDCCU Stadium that featured a 67-minute delay due to lightning from passing thunderstorms. With the victory, the Aztecs (5-1, 2-0 MW) completed their 20th second-half comeback under head coach Rocky Long and improved to 24-4 in their last 28 Mountain West encounters. Despite limiting SDSU to a season-low 84 yards rushing, the Falcons (2-4, 0-3 MW) were unable to contain the heroics of Agnew, who converted two critical third downs on the Aztecs' go-ahead drive. Pinned inside his own 10 with under 10 minutes to go in the fourth quarter, Agnew scrambled 32 yards down the left sideline on a 3rd-and-9 situation to help the Scarlet and Black dig itself out of a deep hole. Facing a 3rd-and-5 from the SDSU 44 three plays later, the junior signal-caller found himself under intense pressure once again, but still managed to escape disaster with a rollout to the right, before somehow threading a pass to a diving Kobe Smith down to the AFA 24. After the Aztecs lost five yards on a sweep, Agnew quickly regrouped on the next snap, connecting with a wide-open Houston over the middle, as the junior tight end left several Falcon tacklers in his wake en route to the end zone. After forcing a punt on Air Force's ensuing possession, Parker Baldwin extinguished the visitors' final threat minutes later with an interception at the SDSU 45 with 3:10 remaining in the contest. Despite completing just 9-of-25 attempts with one interception, Agnew finished with a career-high 213 passing yards, improving to 4-0 as the Aztecs' starting quarterback. For the second straight game, Chase Jasmin led the SDSU rushing attack with 70 yards and one touchdown on 18 carries, while Fred Trevillion paced the receiving corps with three catches for 94 yards. The Aztecs' stellar defensive effort was anchored by Kyahva Tezino, who led all players with a season-high 15 tackles, including 11 solo stops, while Baldwin finished with nine tackles of his own. Perhaps foreshadowing the subsequent lightning display over Mission Valley, SDSU received the opening kickoff and drove down the field in a flash, needing just three plays to cover 65 yards for the game's first touchdown. After Trevillion hauled in a 55-yard pass from Agnew on the second snap of the evening, Jasmin plowed into the end zone from four yards out to give the Scarlet and Black a quick 7-0 advantage. However, the game turned into a defensive struggle at this juncture, as the two teams combined for seven punts over the remainder of the period. With the Aztecs mired deep in their own territory late in the quarter, Agnew back-pedaled into the end zone; however, the SDSU signal-caller got his foot caught in the turf trying to evade the rush, resulting in a safety that narrowed the gap to 7-2. Later, Air Force put together its longest foray of the night, marching 80 yards in nine plays, punctuated by Ronald Cleveland's 12-yard sprint around left end that put the visitors up 9-7 with 5:13 left in the second quarter. Unfazed, the Aztecs caught a huge break shortly thereafter when Kaelin Himphill crashed through and blocked Charlie Scott's punt. Trenton Thompson corralled the loose ball at the 19-yard line and bulldozed his way over the goal line, dragging would-be tackler Ross Connors the final seven yards to give the Scarlet and Black an improbable 14-9 edge at halftime. Following the aforementioned weather delay, the game remained scoreless until the 9:25 mark of the fourth quarter when Cleveland took a pitch and cut left through the SDSU line for a four-yard touchdown burst, capping a 7-play, 40- yard drive.
