With a win this week over Villanova, the Blue Hens clinch the Atlantic 10 Conference championship. Delaware leads the Atlantic 10 in both scoring offense (39.8 points per game) and scoring defense (13.3 points per contest). Quarterback Matt Nagy has completed 128- of-249 for 2,262 yards and 22 touchdowns. Nagy s favorite target is junior Brett Veach who has tallied 38 receptions for 586 yards and five scores. Delaware s dominant ground attack is led by senior James O Neal who has gained 628 yards on 142 carries (4.4 yards per rush) and three scores and junior Butter Pressey who has recorded 515 yards on 98 carries (5.3 yards per rush) and five scores. Senior Craig Cummings has picked up 332 yards on 77 rushes and four scores. As a team, Delaware has gained 1,918 yards on 451 carries (4.3 per carry) and 25 scores. Defensively, sophomore linebacker Dan Mulhern leads the team in tackles with 107 including nine stops for loss. Senior linebacker Brian McKenna has registered 82 tackles, eight tackles for loss, two sacks and three interceptions. Senior defensive back Bashawn Dixon and senior free safety Mike Furline are tied for the team lead in interceptions with four. BLUE HEN HEAD COACH TUBBY RAYMOND: Delaware is led by 35-year head coach Tubby Raymond. Under his direction, Delaware has recorded a mark, making him one of only 10 coaches in college football history to reach the 250-win plateau. In his 35-year career, Raymond has had numerous coaching accomplishments including leading his teams to 15 NCAA playoff appearances, coaching three National Championship teams (1971, 1972, 1979), winning five Yankee Conference titles and 13 Lambert Cup trophies. Raymond has also guided his teams to eight ECAC Team of the Year Awards. His 293 wins rank him second on the active I-AA coaching victory list. 4 TALLEY S TENURE: Currently in his 16th season on the Main Line, head coach Andy Talley can feel responsible for every facet of the Villanova football program, having started it from scratch in In his career at Villanova, Talley has recorded a mark, making him the all-time winningest coach in Villanova history. Talley s 21-year overall coaching record currently stands at During his career as the Wildcat mentor, Talley has guided Villanova to five NCAA playoff appearances (1989, 1991, 1992, 1996, 1997), three Conference titles and one Lambert-Meadowlands Trophy. In 1997, Talley garnered the Eddie Robinson Award and the AFCA/GTE National Coach of the Year. ALL TIED UP: This week s game between Villanova and Delaware will mark the 34th time that the two schools have played one another. After 33 games, the series is tied at Of the last 15 games played in the series, 12 have been decided by 10 points or less. The Villanova/Delaware games played in the 1990 s were dominated by streaks, as Delaware won six-straight over Villanova from , while the Wildcats have won the last four from Villanova has won the last two meetings in overtime including last season when the Cats rallied from a deficit with 8:37 left in the fourth quarter to win the game, 51-45, in overtime. In 1997, Villanova trailed by eight (25-17) heading into the fourth quarter and would go on to win 35-25, while in 1998 the Wildcats erased a deficit with 14:47 left in the fourth quarter to earn a overtime win. BREAKING HIS OWN RECORD: Junior running back Brian Westbrook broke his own school record for rushing yards in a season in last Saturday loss to William & Mary. Westbrook currently has 1,147 yards on 165 carries (7.0 yards per rush) and 13 touchdowns. His previous record of 1,046 rushing yards was established in Westbrook is the first player in Villanova school history to have two 1,000-yard rushing seasons in his career. There has only been three times in the program s history where a Villanova back has rushed for 1,000 yards in a season. The only other Villanova player to rush for 1,000 yards in a season was Curtis Sifford who became the first Wildcat back ever to gain 1,000 yards in 1996 when he tallied 1,001 yards on the ground. 327 ALL-PURPOSE: In last Saturday s loss to William & Mary, junior running back Brian Westbrook tallied 327 yards of all-purpose offense, giving him two 300-yard all-purpose games this season and five for his career. His 327 yards came with 126 yards rushing on 16 carries and two scores, eight catches for a career-best 192 yards and one touchdown and one kickoff return for nine yards. For the year, Westbrook has 2,534 yards of all-purpose yardage (253.4 allpurpose yards per game) which leads the nation in I-AA football as well as the Atlantic 10 Conference. The next closest person to him in the Atlantic 10 is Stephan Lewis of New Hampshire whose average of all-purpose yards per game is 90 yards behind Westbrook. In the national stats, the next closest player to him is Jonathan Reese of Columbia whose average of is 63 yards behind Westbrook. MORE ON WESTBROOK: Brian Westbrook made big play after big play last Saturday en route to gaining 327 yards of all-purpose yardage. On Villanova s first play from scrimmage, Westbrook caught a 67-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brett Gordon. In the third quarter, Westbrook scored on an 82-yard touchdown run which was the seventh longest rush in school history. He also converted two fourth-down conversions for the Wildcats with one coming on the ground and the other on a reception. In addition, Westbrook s 192 yards receiving sets a career-high for him and it ties Mike Siani for fifth all-time for single game receiving yards. By starting against the Blue Hens, Bennett will have started every single game (46- straight) of his Villanova career. As a true freshman in 1997, Bennett started all 13 games at guard before moving to tackle the last three years. 100-YARD RECEIVER: For the first time this year, Villanova had a 100-yard receiver last week versus William & Mary, as Brian Westbrook made eight receptions for a career-high 192 yards. Last season, there were seven occasions where a Wildcat had 100 yards receiving. REACHING 300: Sophomore quarterback Brett Gordon recorded his first career 300-yard passing game last Saturday versus William & Mary. In the loss, Gordon completed 24-of-39 for 375 yards and three touchdowns. This was his fourth, three touchdown game of the season. The 375 yards passing ranks as the eighth best single game passing performance in Villanova school history. For the year, Gordon has completed 148-of-233 (63.5 percent) for 1,869 yards to go with 18 touchdowns and five interceptions. These statistics are even more impressive when you consider he has missed two and a half games due to an injured knee.

5 THIRD GENERATION: Quarterback Brett Gordon became the third member of his family to be the starting quarterback at Villanova when he made his first collegiate start at Rutgers on Sept. 2. His grandfather, Andrew, was a Villanova quarterback from , while his father, Drew, was a Wildcat signal caller from Andrew Gordon was the quarterback of the Villanova teams that played in the 1947 Great Lakes Bowl (24-14 loss to Kentucky) and the 1949 Harbor Bowl (27-7 win over Nevada). Drew Gordon ranks ninth on Villanova s career passing yards list with 2,370 yards. Villanova junior running back Luke Stopper is also a third generation Wildcat football player. His grandfather, Anthony, played at Villanova from and his father, John, performed on the Main Line from SANGO SHINES: Junior wide receiver Murle Sango had one of his better games of the season last Saturday against William & Mary. In the loss, Sango made six catches for 65 yards and two touchdowns. His two touchdown catches came from a 12 and 16 yards. For the year, Sango has tallied 39 receptions for 471 yards and five touchdowns. As a sophomore in 1999, Sango registered a school-record 98 receptions for 1,064 yards and 10 touchdowns. WILDCATS ON THE RADIO: Every Villanova football game this season will be carried live by the Villanova Football Radio Network. The flagship station for the Wildcats this season will be WFIL-AM 560. Returning for his 14th season as Villanova s play-by-play man is Joe Eichhorn. Joining Eichhorn for an eighth consecutive year is Ryan Fannon. All 11 Wildcat gridiron contests will be broadcast live, with a pre-game show airing 30 minutes prior to kickoff during away games and one hour prior to kickoff for home games. ANDY TALLEY RADIO SHOW: Continuing in 2000, WFIL-AM 560-AM and WZZD-AM 990 will broadcast the Andy Talley Radio Show. The one-hour call-in show is hosted by color commentator Ryan Fannon and will provide a weekly recap of Villanova football games, as well as a preview of upcoming contests. The show will be held at the Wild Onion Restaurant located just up the street from Villanova Stadium on Conestoga Road. Throughout the one-hour program, Fannon and Coach Talley will take questions concerning all the teams in the Atlantic 10 Conference, as well as NCAA I-AA football on a national scene. The show will take place on Thursday nights before road games at 6 p.m., and on Saturday s following Wildcat home games. BLOCK PARTY: Villanova blocked its fourth punt of the year last Saturday against william & Mary when freshman defensive back Clarence Curry blocked a punt in the fourth quarter and fell on it in the end zone for a touchdown. The other three blocked punts this year were credited to Matt Bride who has blocked two and Reggie Danage with one. For his career, Danage has four punt blocks. The Wildcats have now blocked 10 punts over the last two seasons. TEAM CAPTAINS: Serving as team captains in 2000 will be senior running back Ducarmel Augustin, senior offensive tackle Stan Bennett and fifth-year senior defensive end Darren Lenz. ENDING ON A STREAK : Senior free safety Braheem Powell will play his final game in a Villanova uniform Saturday by starting for the 33rd-straight time. Powell currently ranks fourth on the team in tackles with 69 and he is tied with Gary Johnson for the team lead in interceptions with three. In 1999, Powell led the Wildcats in picks with four and he has tallied eight in his career. Powell started all 11 games in 1998 at cornerback, before starting all 11 last season at free safety where he has started the first 10 contests this year. For his career, Powell has made 214 total stops. All total, Villanova has 14 players on its roster who call California home. Of the 14, 13 appear on the Wildcat depth including nine who are starters. OVERTIME HISTORY: During Andy Talley s tenure as Villanova s head football coach, the Wildcats have participated in eight overtime games and have tallied a 5-3 record. Six of the eight overtime games have been played at Villanova Stadium. Last week s loss to William & Mary, was Villanova s lone overtime game of the 2000 season. Last year, Villanova played two overtime games. On Oct. 16, 1999 Villanova defeated UConn, 48-45, in triple overtime in a game played in Storrs, Conn. In the season finale at Villanova Stadium, the Cats rallied from a deficit with 8:37 remaining against Delaware to win a thriller in one overtime.

6 2000 Game-By-Game Rutgers 34, No. 14 Villanova 21 Sept. 2, Rutgers Stadium New Brunswick, N.J. For the fourth time in the last five years, Villanova opened its season against a I-A opponent, as the Cats traveled up the turnpike to central New Jersey to take on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Despite a valiant effort by the Wildcats, Rutgers came away with a victory. Rutgers got on the board first as the Knights took the opening kickoff and drove 63 yards on nine plays and scored on a 17-yard pass from quarterback Mike McMahon to Errol Johnson. The Wildcats tied the score at 7-7 when junior running back Brian Westbrook caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Brett Gordon. The score would stay 7-7 until Rutgers scored on a threeyard pass from McMahon to LJ Smith with 2:43 left until halftime. The Knights would head to the locker room with a 14-7 advantage. McMahon and Johnson hooked-up again at the 12:21 mark of the third quarter on a five-yard touchdown, giving Rutgers a 20-7 lead. The Scarlet Knights would push their lead to 27-7 on McMahon s fourth touchdown pass of the day to Antonio Lovelace. Villanova cut into the Rutgers lead early in the last stanza when senior fullback Ducarmel Augustin scored on an eight-yard pass to make the score with 13:04 left. After Walter King caught McMahon s fifth touchdown of the night with 2:49 left in regulation, Villanova finished the game s scoring when Gordon hit senior Steve Ward on a three-yard scoring strike. Making his first collegiate start, Gordon completed 29-of- 48 for 285 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. After missing all of the 1999 season due to a knee injury, Westbrook returned to action and looked to be completely healthy. All total, he amassed 255 yards of all-purpose offense including 14 carries for 46 yards, nine receptions for 93 yards and five kickoffs for 116 yards. Junior wide out Murle Sango tallied seven catches for 64 yards, while senior wide receiver Steve Ward had six receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, senior free safety Braheem Powell led the way with seven tackles, three pass break-ups and an interc e p t i o n. Sophomore linebacker Steve Neugebauer registered two sacks for the Wildcats. For Rutgers, McMahon was spectacular, as he connected on 27-of-44 for 323 yards and five touchdowns. Wide receiver Walter King had a big game for the Knights with five receptions for 104 yards and a touchdown. Villanova opened its home portion of the 2000 season in fine fashion, as the Wildcats rolled to a win over Division II Millersville. The Wildcats raced to a 21-0 lead and went to intermission with a commanding 44-7 lead. The story of the day was junior running back Brian Westbrook who entered the game needing just one score to be the all-time leading scorer in Villanova school history. Westbrook wasted no time in getting the record, as he returned the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown. This was the third kickoff return for a score of Westbrook s career. He would go on two score three more times, including two one-yard runs and a 47-yard pass reception. For the game, Westbrook tallied 13 rushes for 132 yards, four receptions for 79 yards and a 93-yard kickoff return for a total of 304 all-purpose yards. Sophomore quarterback Brett Gordon had a strong game for the Cats, completing 17-of-22 for 224 yards and two touchdowns. Senior fullback Ducarmel Augustin scored twice on a 10- yard run and a one-yard plunge. Villanova s other score was registered by junior Murle Sango on a 23-yard pass. Defensively, the Wildcats recorded six sacks including two by junior Kwesi Solomon who also added five total tackles. Junior linebacker Joe Keating led the Wildcat defense with seven tackles. Villanova forced three turnovers, with Reggie Danage recovering a fumble and both Darnell Greene and Matt Bride tallying interceptions. Millersville s top performer on the day was wide receiver Dondre Gilliam who had three catches for 68 yards and seven kickoff returns for 168 yards. The Marauders scored their first touchdown in the first quarter when Braden Steffy picked-up Luke Stopper s fumble and returned it 11 yards for a score. Millersville also scored the game s final touchdown with 1:51 left in the game Calvin Everett scampered for a 42-yard score.

7 2000 Game-By-Game No. 18 Villanova 42, Norfolk State 0 Sept. 16, Villanova Stadium Villanova, Pa. In front of a homecoming crowd of 8,275, the No. 18 Villanova Wildcats dominated the Norfolk State Spartans by a score of It was first shutout for the Villanova defense since the opening game of the 1997 season when the Wildcats shutout West Chester, Villanova scored on its first possession when junior running back Brian Westbrook scampered in from 17 yards out. The drive was just three plays long which included a 56-yard run by Westbrook. The Wildcats would score a second first quarter touchdown when senior running back Ducarmel Augustin caught a 43- yard pass from junior quarterback Brett Gordon. The Wildcats would tally three, third quarter touchdowns to race to a 35-0 lead at intermission. Westbrook scored his second touchdown of the day on a 41-yard pass from Gordon, while junior wide receiver Murle Sango made a nine-yard touchdown reception. The final score of the half came when sophomore linebacker Steven Neugebauer returned an interception 45 yards for a score. In the first half, Villanova ran just 17 offensive plays and scored four touchdowns. The time of possession in the first stanza was 21:46 for Norfolk State and 8:14 for Villanova. The final score of the day came at the 5:28 mark of the third quarter when redshirt freshman running back Henry Ridley ran in from five yards out for his first collegiate touchdown. On the afternoon, Norfolk State managed just 250 yards of total offense and the Villanova defense accounted for nine sacks including two each by Kwesi Solomon and Joe Keating. The Wildcats also recorded three interceptions with Braheem Powell, Joe Quartey and Neugebauer each getting one apiece. Westbrook finished with 101 yards on 11 carries, while Gordon was eight-of-11 for 207 yards and three touchdowns. Ridley came off the bench to gain 66 yards on 14 carries. Game Four No. 16 Villanova 47, Maine 21 Sept. 23, Villanova Stadium Villanova, Pa. Villanova improved its winning streak to three in a row with a convincing win over Maine before a Parents Weekend crowd. The Wildcats jumped on the Black Bears early, scoring touchdowns on four of their five first half possessions and racing to a 27-7 halftime lead Junior running back Brian Westbrook had another strong game as he rushed for a career-high 202 yards on 24 carries and three touchdowns. The 202 yards ranks second all-time on the Villanova single game rushing yards list. Westbrook had 100 yards on 12 carries at halftime. Also, in the win, Westbrook became just the fourth Wildcat player ever to reach the 2,000-yard rushing plateau. After Westbrook scored on a two-yard run and sophomore Brian White tallied a 16-yard touchdown reception, Maine got back in the game at 13-7 on a two-yard scoring run by quarterback Jake Eaton. Villanova responded with two second quarter touchdowns to lead 27-7 at intermission. Junior wide receiver Murle Sango scored the first second quarter score on a 20-yard pass from quarterback Brett Gordon, before Westbrook scampered 37 yards for a touchdown. Westbrook increased Villanova s lead to 34-7 in the third quarter when he ran in the end zone from two yards out. After Maine s Ben Christopher caught a six-yard touchdown pass to pull the Black Bears to within 34-14, Villanova senior fullback Ducarmel Augustin scored on a five-yard pass from Gordon making the score Sophomore cornerback Gary Johnson finished the scoring for Villanova at the 7:42 mark of the fourth quarter when he made his first career interception and returned it 68 yards for a touchdown. Gordon had another strong day for the Wildcats, completing 20-of-27 for 248 yards and three scores. Augustin turned in a fine performance for Villanova with five receptions for 50 yards and a score to go with seven carries for 23 yards, while Sango led the team in receiving with five catches for 67 yards and a score. On defense, senior strong safety Matt Bride led the charge with eight tackles and his second blocked punt of the year. Villanova forced four turnovers, including two interceptions by Johnson and Darnell Greene and two fumbles that were recovered by Jason McMillion and Joe Keating.

(AP) - Backup quarterback Scott Lukash threw his first career touchdown pass, a 23-yarder to Matt Chila, early in the fourth quarter Saturday to lead Villanova to a victory over New Hampshire. Lukash replaced starting quarterback Brett Gordon late in the second quarter after Gordon left with a sprained knee. He capped a 7-play, 99-yard drive with the scoring pass to Chila, then hit Brian White with a nine-yard touchdown pass with 2:17 left. Lukash completed 11 of 13 passes for 151 yards for Villanova (5-2, 3-1 Atlantic 10). Randal Williams scored three touchdowns and Stephen Lewis added two for New Hampshire (4-3, 2-3), which lost its third straight game. Villanova senior running back Brian Westbrook became Villanova's all-time leading rusher, breaking the mark of 2,533 set by Vince Thompson from 1975 to Westbrook returned a kickoff 96 yards in the opening half and finished with 111 yards on 25 carries and 296 all-purpose yards. VILLANOVA, PA. - In an Atlantic 10 showdown of 5-2 teams, on Saturday, Oct. 28th at Villanova Stadium, the No. 16 Richmond Spiders ran for a school record 430 yards on 77 carries, en route to a victory over the 18th ranked Villanova Wildcats. The 430 rushing yards allowed by the Wildcat defense on Saturday, broke the previous school record of 411 yards which Villanova surrendered to Clemson in The Spiders improve to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play with the win, while the Wildcats fall to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in Atlantic 10 play. Villanova got on the board first on a 30-yard field goal by Casey Hannon at the 13:44 mark of the first quarter. Hannon would leave the game in the second quarter with an ankle injury. Richmond fought back to take a 7-3 lead as running back TyRonne Turner scored on a one-yard touchdown run to cap off an 11-play, 48-yard drive in 5:19. Trailing 7-3 in the second quarter, the Wildcats put together an outstanding drive of their own and reclaimed the lead at 10-7, on a two-yard scoring plunge by junior running back Br i a n Westbrook. Westbrook's touchdown, his 11th rushing touchdown of the season and 16th total, ended a 4:17 drive in which Villanova traveled 84 yards in 11 plays. The Spiders capitalized on good field position on their next drive, starting on their own 43-yard line following a 34 yard kickoff return by Turner. With 10:44 to go in the half, Scott Fulton scored on a three-yard run to give Richmond a lead at intermission. After a Wildcat punt to begin the second half, the Spiders looked to extend their lead. Shipp scored on runs of 9 and 3 yards and Lucero threw touchdown passes of 23 yards to Eric Bross and 27 yards to Peter Cariello as UMass built its halftime advantage Lucero hit DeShon Hardy with a 33-yard score early in the fourth quarter, extending the UMass lead to Shipp rushed for 105 yards on 25 carries, while Lucero was 13 for 19 with 208 yards passing. (AP) - David Corley threw for 247 yards and two touchdowns and Hameen Ali scored three touchdowns to lead William & Ma ry to a ove rtime victory Sa t u rday ove r Villanova. In overtime, each team took the ball at the opponent's 25- yard line. William & Mary's Komlan Lonergan scored on a 4-yard run. Villanova (5-5, 3-4 Atlantic 10) had its attempt stopped when quarterback Brett Gordon was sacked on the 19. William & Mary (5-5, 3-4) battled back to score twice in the final three minutes. Corley hit Rich Musinski with a 10-yard scoring strike with 3:07 left. After recovering an onsides kick on the Villanova 48, William & Mary tied the game eight plays later when Ali scored on a 1-yard plunge with 1:07 left in the game.
