Maine has beaten Colgate (34-10), James Madison (13-3), Richmond (14-3) and Northeastern (21-9) with their lone loss coming to Hofstra (51-44). Maine has been sensational on defense, giving up 15.2 points per game and just yards of total offense per contest. In the latest Atlantic 10 Conference stats, the Black Bears rank first in scoring defense. Maine s defensive leader is junior linebacker Stephen Cooper who leads the Atlantic 10 in tackles for loss with 10 and is fourth in the league in total tackles with 56. Junior defensive end Brendan Curry leads the Atlantic 10 in sacks with 5.5. Offensively, junior quarterback Jake Eaton has completed 73-of-140 for 1,018 yards to go with eight touchdowns and four interceptions. Eaton has three talented receivers including sophomore Stefan Gomes (28 receptions for 310 yards and five TD), sophomore Paris Minor (25 catches for 372 yards) and senior tight end Chad Hayes (16 receptions for 221 yards and three TD). Maine is led in rushing by senior Royston English who has carried 104 times for 451 yards and two touchdowns. The quarterback Eaton is second on the team in rushing with 143 yards on 43 rushes and three scores. BLACK BEAR HEAD COACH JACK COSGROVE: Maine is led by ninth-year head coach Jack Cosgrove. During his tenure at Maine, Cosgrove has led the Black Bears to record. In 1996, Cosgrove was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Coach of the Year after leading Maine to a 7-4 campaign. Cosgrove was named head coach at Maine after serving as an assistant from , including being the offensive coordinator from After graduating from Maine, Cosgrove was a graduate assistant for the Black Bears from under Jack Bicknell. 4 TALLEY S TENURE: Currently in his 17th season on the Main Line, head coach Andy Talley can feel responsible for every facet of the Villanova football program, having started it from scratch in In his career at Villanova, Talley has recorded a mark, making him the all-time winningest coach in Villanova history. Talley s 22-year overall coaching record currently stands at During his career as the Wildcat mentor, Talley has guided Villanova to five NCAA playoff appearances (1989, 1991, 1992, 1996, 1997), three Conference titles and one Lambert- Meadowlands Trophy. In 1997, Talley garnered the Eddie Robinson Award and the AFCA/GTE National Coach of the Year. DIVISION II LOSS: Last Friday s loss to New Haven was the first time that Villanova has lost to a Division II opponent since football was restored in The Wildcats are 4-1 all-time versus a Division II team since football went I-AA in FIFTH GAME JINX: By losing last Friday to the University of New Haven, Villanova has now lost the fifth game of the season four years in a row. The three previous years, Villanova was 3-1 entering game five, while this year they were a perfect 4-0. OWN WORST ENEMY: Villanova has been its own worst enemy the last two weeks committing five turnovers in each of the last two weeks for a twogame total of 10. In the double overtime win versus James Madison on Oct. 6, Villanova threw five interceptions, and in last week s loss to New Haven the Wildcats had three interceptions and two fumbles. For the year, Villanova has totaled 11 turnovers (9 interceptions/2 fumbles) and they have recorded 10 turnovers on defense (6 interceptions/4 fumbles) for a -1 turnover ratio. Villanova has also committed 43 penalties for 370 yards, making them the second most penalized team in the Atlantic 10. This week s opponent is the league s most penalized team (43 penalties for 371 yards). LOPSIDED SCORES IN ORONO: This Saturday s game at Maine will mark just the fourth time that Villanova has played in Orono. In the previous three games at Maine where the Black Bears have won two of the three, none of the games have been close. The All-Star game which highlights the nation s top seniors will be played Saturday, Feb. 2 in Maui, Hawaii and will be shown live on ESPN. On Sunday, Feb. 3, Westbrook and his Hula Bowl teammates will travel to Honolulu and will attend the NFL Pro Bowl. Last year s Hula Bowl had 24 NFL draft picks play in the game. SANGO REACHES 200: With his eight catch, 118 yard, one touchdown performance last Friday versus New Haven, senior wide receiver Murle Sango became just the second player in Villanova football history to record 200 career catches. The 100-yard receiving game last week was the eighth of his career. For his career, Sango has posted 201 receptions for 2,299 yards and 19 touchdowns. The only other Wildcat to ever tally 200 career receptions is current Atlanta Falcon wide receiver Brian Finneran who made 265 catches during his Main Line career. Besides recording a second half shutout, the Wildcats registered five second half sacks with linebackers Jason McMillion and Jamison Young getting two each. Freshman Terence Taylor was credited with the other sack. For the year, Villanova has nine quarterback sacks. SPREADING THE WEALTH: After five games, Villanova has tallied six interceptions with five different players being credited with a pick. Junior Gary Johnson has a team-high two interceptions, while Steve Neugebauer, Jason McMillion, Ray Ventrone and Clarence Curry have one each. THIRD GENERATION: Quarterback Brett Gordon is the third member of his family to be the starting quarterback at Villanova. His grandfather, Andrew, was a Villanova quarterback from , while his father, Drew, was a Wildcat signal caller from Andrew Gordon was the quarterback of the Villanova teams that played in the 1947 Great Lakes Bowl (24-14 loss to Kentucky) and the 1949 Harbor Bowl (27-7 win over Nevada). Drew Gordon ranks ninth on Villanova s career passing yards list with 2,370 yards. Villanova junior running back Luke Stopper is also a third generation Wildcat football player. His grandfather, Anthony, played at Villanova from and his father, John, performed on the Main Line from OVERTIME HISTORY: During head coach Andy Talley s tenure at Villanova, the Wildcats have played in nine overtime games and in those nine games the Wildcats are 6-3. Villanova has played five of the nine games in the last three seasons and have won four of the last five overtime contests. Of the nine overtime games, seven have been played at Villanova Stadium. Villanova has played one extra session game this season and that came against James Madison in week four when the Cats outlasted the Dukes, 45-44, in double overtime. The last overtime game before the James Madison contest came last year when the Wildcats suffered a loss to William & Mary. In 1999, Villanova played two overtime games. On Oct. 16, 1999 Villanova defeated UConn, 48-45, in triple overtime in a game played in Storrs, Conn. In the 1999 season finale at Villanova Stadium, the Cats rallied from a deficit with 8:37 remaining against Delaware to win a thriller in one overtime. ALL-AMERICAN HISTORY: The Villanova football program has had a first team All-American in six of the last seven years. In those seven years, five different Wildcats have achieved first team All-American status. In the program s history, 20 different players have earned All-American distinction. All 11 Wildcat gridiron contests will be broadcast live, with a pre-game show airing 30 minutes prior to kickoff during away games and one hour prior to kickoff for home games. 7 2000 GAME-BY-GAME GAME ONE No. 20 Villanova 38, Colgate 14 Aug. 30, Villanova Stadium Villanova, Pa. VILLANOVA, PA - The Villanova football team won its sixth consecutive home opener, as senior running back Brian Westbrook had yet another record setting day in leading the Wildcats to a victory over Colgate on Thursday, Aug. 30, at Villanova Stadium. The game was stopped with 10:31 remaining in the fourth quarter due to lightning and was finally called after a 51-minute delay. Westbrook totaled 337 all-purpose yards and a career-high five touchdowns on the night for the `Cats who improved to 1-0 on the season with the victory. In addition, he tied the NCAA I-AA record with his fifth career kickoff return for a touchdown and went over the 3,000 yard rushing mark for his career. With his outstanding contest, Westbrook vaulted himself into 21st place on the college football career list for all-purpose yards with 7,026. After a Casey Hannon 24-yard field goal gave Villanova a 3-0 lead at the 10:26 mark of the first quarter, the Colgate offense marched down the field. A 13-play, 76-yard drive resulted in a two-yard rushing touchdown by Matt Kobelski to give the Raiders a 7-3 advantage. With the Wildcats trailing 7-3, Westbrook returned the next kickoff 98 yards for a Villanova touchdown to help Villanova reclaim the lead at Beginning with that score, the Wildcats went on to score 35 straight points with all five touchdowns coming via Westbrook. Colgate would tack on a late score on a six yard touchdown pass from Rob Markett to Joe Parker, but it was too late as the Wildcats surged to a victory. Joining Westbrook in leading the Villanova offensive attack was junior quarterback Brett Gordon, who completed 19-of-33 passes for 175 yards and one touchdown. In the loss for Colgate (0-1), Parker caught three passes for 28 yards and a score, while Markett came off the bench to complete all three of his pass attempts for 19 yards and a touchdown. GAME TWO No. 18 Villanova 31, Northeastern 14 Sept. 8, Villanova Stadium Villanova, Pa. VILLANOVA, PA. - On Saturday, Sept. 8 in front of 8,427 fans at Villanova Stadium, the Villanova football team scored early and often, putting up 31 first half points en route to a victory over Northeastern. With Saturday's win, the Wildcats improved to 2-0 for the first time since the 1997 season. Villanova broke the scoring open 9:42 into the first quarter when junior Brian White made a diving two-yard touchdown catch in the side of the end zone to give the `Cats a 7-0 lead. The Wildcats added a 20-yard field goal by senior place kicker Casey Hannon to take a 10-0 lead after one quarter of play. Senior running back Brian Westbrook controlled the second quarter, scoring twice on runs of one and 34 yards to give Villanova a 24-0 advantage. The Wildcats would score once more before the half on a 35-yard scoring strike from junior quarterback Brett Gordon to senior wide receiver Murle Sango, giving Villanova a commanding 31-0 lead at intermission. The Northeastern defense clamped down on Westbrook and the Wildcat offense in the second half. The Huskies finally got on the board with 12:10 remaining in the third quarter on a 23-yard pass from Logan Galli to Kito Delgado to trim the margin to Northeastern was able to tack on a late score on an Anthony Riley 20-yard touchdown run, but it was much too late as Villanova went on for a victory. Gordon completed his first 11 passes of the game and finished the contest 19-for-25 for 195 yards to go along with two touchdowns and one interception. On the receiving end of seven of his passes was Sango, who finished with 95 yards and one touchdown. Westbrook kept up his stellar play, combing for 195 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns. He rushed for 122 yards on 21 carries, caught two passes for 22 yards and totaled 51 yards on a punt return. For Northeastern in the loss, Delgado caught five passes for 100 yards and one touchdown. Riley was strong on the ground for the Huskies, carrying 18 times for 95 yards and one score.

(AP) - Brett Gordon threw for 376 yards and four touchdowns as Villanova capped a 16-point rally in the fourth quarter Saturday to beat Richmond A 30-yard field goal by Casey Hannon with one second left in the game brought the lead and the win for 14th-ranked Villanova (3-0, 2-0 Atlantic 10), after 8- and 35-yard passes from Gordon to Shaz Brown and Cameron Cross in the last eight minutes. Richmond (0-3, 0-1 Atlantic 10) had led with 11:39 left in the fourth quarter, on runs from David Edwards, Boyd Ouden and Sean Gustus. The Spiders rushed for 335 yards, but failed on a fourth-and-two attempt at Villanova's 25-yard line, their first failure in seven fourth-down attempts. The Wildcats' Shaz Brown caught nine passes for 123 yards, for two touchdowns, to beat the 17th-ranked Spiders, who have had two narrow losses against I-A schools Virginia and Vanderbilt. "It really looked bleak for us, especially with the Richmond offense, and the way they drain the clock," Villanova coach Andy Talley said. "Somehow we found a way to get it done." VILLANOVA, PA. - Senior running back Brian Westbrook had a record-setting day on Saturday, breaking the Atlantic 10 all-time record for career touchdowns in Villanova's double overtime victory over James Madison in an Atlantic 10 affair at Villanova Stadium. With Westbrook's third touchdown of the day, he broke the all-time Atlantic 10 record for touchdowns (69) held by New Hampshire's Jerry Azumah. Westbrook finished the day with 405 all-purpose yards (228 rushing, 42 receiving and 135 return yards) and five touchdowns. With his five touchdowns, Westbrook has scored 72 career touchdowns. The Wildcats improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in Atlantic 10 play, while the Dukes fell to 1-4 overall and 0-4 in conference action. Villanova held a narrow advantage at intermission, as Westbrook rushed for 97 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. James Madison was able to stay in the game by picking off two B rett Gordon passes, including one returned 41 yards for a touchdown by Dennard Melton. With the score tied at and only 2:34 remaining in the third quarter, Westbrook broke loose again scampering 29 yards for a Villanova score to give the `Cats a advantage at the end of three quarters of play. Down by seven points with less than six minutes to go in regulation, the Dukes got yet another turnover as Trey Townsend picked off a Gordon pass for James Madison's fifth interception of the game. The Dukes seemed to be out of luck with a fourth down and 17 at the Villanova 22 with 3:12 to go in the contest, but an 18-yard reception by Alan Harrison kept the James Madison drive alive. Three plays later, the Dukes tied the game at on a two-yard scoring pass from Matt LeZotte to Tahir Hinds to send the game into overtime. The Wildcats struck first in the first ove rtime session, as Westbrook scored his fourth touchdown of the game to give Villanova a lead. James Madison came right back with a score of their own on a oneyard run by Robert Carson to tie the game at and send the game into a second extra period. Getting the ball first in the second overtime, the Dukes marched 25 yards on seven plays for a touchdown as LeZotte hit Harrison from six yards out. James Madison kicker Burke George missed the extra point, however, to keep the JMU lead at Villanova had one more chance to stay in the game with a fourth down and six from the James Madison six. Gordon threw a pass towards the sideline and Westbrook made a spectacular five-yard diving catch to give the Wildcats a first down at the Dukes' one-yard line. From there, Westbrook capped off his day, by diving in the end zone from one-yard out to tie the game. Casey H annon's extra point sealed the victory for the `Cats as Villanova went on for a victory. In addition to his Atlantic 10 feat, Westbrook had a number of other highlights. He was the first 200-yard rusher versus James Madison since Massachusetts' Rene Ingola on Oct. 2, In addition, his 405 allpurpose yards broke his own mark for the most all-purpose yards against James Madison, which he originally set with 325 yards against the Dukes on Sept. 9, On offense for Villanova, B rian White and Murle Sango also had solid days for the `Cats. White and Sango each caught five passes for 51 yards. On defense for the Wildcats, D arnell Greene had nine solo tackles.

9 2000 GAME-BY-GAME GAME FIVE New Haven 17, No. 12 Villanova 14 Oct. 12, Villanova Stadium Villanova, Pa. VILLANOVA, PA. - Under the lights at Villanova Stadium on Friday night, Oct. 12, the 12th ranked Villanova Wildcats were defeated for the first time in 2001, by the Division II University of New Haven Chargers. It was the first time since football was restored at Villanova in 1985 that the Wildcats lost to a Division II opponent. With the loss, Villanova falls to 4-1 overall on the season. New Haven improves to 4-2 overall with Friday's victory. After fumbling inside the five-yard line on its first possession, Villanova had a 46-yard field goal attempt blocked by New Haven on its second drive. The Chargers' followed with a six-play, 54-yard drive in 2:55 to take the game's first lead. New Haven quarterback Rob D'Innocenzio connected on a 36- yard completion to Sean Fry to move the ball down to the three-yard line giving the Chargers a first and goal. With a third and goal at the one-yard line and less than one minute remaining in the first quarter, Charger tailback Maikel Mehu leaped over a pile at the goal line to give New Haven an early 7-0 lead. The Chargers increased their advantage to 10-0 on a 46-yard field goal by Peter Dodosh with just over nine minutes remaining in the half. The Wildcats responded as quarterback Brett Gordon found Murle Sango with a swing pass, which Sango took 64 yards for a Villanova score outrunning numerous New Haven defenders. Getting the ball back with 1:59 remaining in the half on a Steve Neugebauer interception, the Wildcats looked to be marching down field. Charger defensive back Jamar Williams stepped in front of a Gordon pass to force yet another Villanova turnover. Williams returned the interception all the way down to the Villanova 29-yard line, setting up a 13-yard touchdown run by Dawud Hanif to give New Haven a 17-7 halftime lead. The Chargers began the second half with a drive down to the 19-yard line, but it would go for not as a 36-yard field by Dodosh sailed wide left. The Wildcats failed to capitalize, turning the ball over for the third time of the game, on a fumble by running back Henry Ridley. Trailing 17-7 after three quarters of play, the `Cats' offense finally caught fire. Villanova drove nine yards on 60 plays in 3:53, scoring on a one-yard plunge by Gordon to cut the New Haven lead to The key play in the drive was a 16-yard pass from Gordon to wide receiver Brian White, taking the ball down to the one-yard line. After getting the ball back off a Charger punt, the Wildcats gave away another opportunity. Gordon threw his third interception of the game, as New Haven defensive end Jermaine Gordon jumped high off the ground to pluck Gordon's pass out of the air. Villanova got another opportunity just plays later, as cornerback Clarence Curry intercepted a D'Innocenzio pass and returned it to the 39-yard line of the Wildcats. Turnovers continued to plague Villanova, however, as Williams intercepted a pass thrown by Scott Lukash who replaced Gordon just plays earlier as Gordon left with bruised ribs. The Wildcats got the ball back at their own 20-yard line with 2:41 remaining following a Charger punt. Villanova surged into New Haven territory on a 13-yard pass from Gordon to Shaz Brown, which took the ball down to the 39-yard line. Four plays later, on a fourth down and 10 from the 38, Gordon passed the ball to White, who was stopped two yards short of the first down giving the Chargers a victory. In the loss for Villanova, Gordon completed 26-of-35 passes for 295 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. The highlights of the day for the Wildcats came by way of Sango and freshman Phil DiGiacomo. Sango caught eight passes for 118 yards and one touchdown. DiGiacomo caught six passes for 45 yards and rushed three times for 13 yards. Westbrook played sparingly in the game on an injured ankle. He rushed only 14 times from 64 yards and caught three passes for nine yards.
