2 PSAC Football - Week Five Notes - 9/24/08 Four PSAC Teams Remain in Poll, Now Tied for Most Again For the fifth straight week, the PSAC has four teams in the AFCA Top 25 poll. Bloomsburg, California (Pa.) and IUP all remained ranked for the fifth straight week and all three stayed in their respective spots in the poll: Bloom at No. 10, IUP at No. 12 and Cal at No. 14. Despite falling to Cal last week, Edinboro remained in the top 25, dropping just one spot to No. 24. After being the team with the fourth-most votes in the other receiving votes category last week, West Chester moved up two spots and is now receiving the secondmost of any of the others receiving votes - effectively 27th in the country. Slippery Rock, which received votes in the first two weeks of the poll before dropping out entirely the last two weeks, reappeared this week in the others receiving votes category. The Rock has won three straight games after dropping its season opener. The four schools in the poll is once again tied for the most of any conference in the country, with the MIAA and Lone Star each having four as well. The PSAC had the most schools in the poll in the preseason poll and tied for the most after week one before the MIAA had five ranked in the last three weeks. In the D2football.com poll this week, Bloomsburg, IUP, Cal and Edinboro all remained in the same spot as last week, as Nos. 12, 13, 16, and 25, respectively, although Edinboro is now tied for 25th after being ranked 25th alone last week. Douds Sets PSAC Victory Mark East Stroudsburg head coach Denny Douds, who is in his 35th season as coach at ESU, won his 213th career game last weekend with ESU s thrilling overtime win over Shippensburg. That broke the alltime record for coaching wins in the PSAC, passing Gene Carpenter, who coached at Millersville from and won 212 games. 7 #10/12 Bloomsburg at C.W. Post Sept :00 p.m. Brookville, N.Y. Hickox Field (5,000) Radio/Internet: WHLM 930 AM/whlm.com Overall: 4-0 Overall: 1-3 PSAC East: 1-0 PSAC East: 1-0 The Coaches Bryan Collins is in his 11th as head coach at C.W. Post and has an career record. Danny Hale is in his 16th year as head coach at Bloomsburg and has a record with the Huskies. Overall, he is in his 21st year as a college head coach and has a career record. When Bloomsburg has the Ball The Huskies proved last week that they can throw the ball when needed, as quarterback Dan Latorre threw for a season-high 210 yards against Kutztown last week, the first time all year they have gone over 200 yards passing in a game. However, only one receiver has caught more than four balls this year for Bloomsburg, as the Huskies bread and butter is still the running game. Although Bloom did not have a 100-yard rusher for the first time this year last week, they still managed 160 yards on the ground as a team, and for the year still leads the PSAC in rushing offense at ypg behind Derrick Price (136.8 ypg) and Kenny Domzalski (100.2 ypg), who rank third and sixth, respectively in rushing yards per game in the conference, as Bloom is the only team in the conference to have two rushers averaging over 100 ypg. C.W. Post recorded a shutout last week against Cheyney but still has given up the fifth-most points in the PSAC. The best part of their defense, however, has been their rushing defense, which is allowing just ypg to rank sixth in the league and has allowed just three rushing touchdowns. Defensive lineman Tayrance Smith is a big part of that as he ranks third in the PSAC in tackles for loss with 6.5. However, if the Pioneers can contain Bloomsburg s running game like Kutztown did last week, it may actually play into Bloom s favor, as Post is second-to-last in the conference in passing defense, allowing ypg and 10 passing TDs, tied for the worst in the league. Despite the Pioneers poor pass defense so far, they have two players in the top 10 in the league in passes defended in Leon Saddler (6 pd, 2nd) and Juma McKenley (4 pd, 7th). When C.W. Post has the Ball Bloomsburg s defense is a bit like C.W. Post s in that it has allowed its opponents to move the ball down the field, especially in the air, where the Huskies have allowed ypg to rank fourth-to-last, but have fared well against the run, allowing just ypg to rank third as lineman Jon Ochs is the big presence up front as he leads the league in sacks and forced fumbles and is second in tackles for loss. The major difference, however, is that the Huskies have been stingy in the most important category, points allowed, where they are allowing just 20 per game to rank fourth. A big reason for this is that the Huskies defense has excelled in red zone opportunities for the opponent, as Bloom is allowing just a 58.3 percent red zone conversion rate, third best in the PSAC, which included stopping opponents three times on downs inside the 20. The Pioneers offensive strength is tailback Jason Gwaltney, who is averaging ypg on the ground and scored three touchdowns last week. His presence will be counted upon as Post is in the middle of an uncertain quarterback situation, as freshman Quillian Respass got the start last week over senior Nick Georgetti. A third quarterback, R.J. Kuhn has also seen time this year. Despite the revolving individuals under center, Post has still managed to throw for yards per game, which ranks sixth in the league. However, the Pioneers have just two passing touchdowns, which is second-to-last in the league. On Special Teams Bloomsburg has returned just five punts on the year and is ranked last in average punt return at minus 2 yards a return. It s kick returns are a bit better, averaging 20.5 ypr, led by Jesse Cooper s 25.8 average on eight returns. In the kicking game, Jon Koenig has been a reliable kicker, as he is a perfect 17-for-17 on PATs and 3-for-4 on field goals. Punter Kyle Ream is averaging just 34.9 yards per punt. C.W. Post is somewhat the opposite in the return game, as the Pioneers are averaging just 17.9 yards per kick return but on punt returns are averaging 10.7 yards per return, including a touchdown return by Juma McKenley. In the kicking game, Andrew Kroell is just 1-for-5 on field goals, including one block, and is averaging just 36.8 yards per punt, and has also had a punt blocked. Series/Game Notes Series: Bloomsburg leads C.W. Post 1-0 in the all-time series Last Meeting: Bloomsburg 42, C.W. Post 28 ( at Bloomsburg, Pa.) Bloom and Post met last year in a non-conference game to open the season...although C.W. Post has decent offensive numbers, one of its reasons for not having scored more points is that the Pioneers are only 6-for-16 on red zone chances, including having turned the ball over four times on downs in the red zone. #12/13 IUP at #14/16 California (Pa.) Sept :00 p.m. California, Pa. Adamson Stadium (6,500) TV: FSN-Pittsburgh Radio/Internet: RedZoneMedia.com Overall: 3-0 Overall: 3-1 PSAC West: 1-0 PSAC West: 1-0 The Coaches Lou Tepper is in his third year as head coach at IUP and has a record of 20-5 with the Crimson Hawks. Overall, he is in his 15th year as a college head coach and has a career mark of John Luckhardt is in his seventh year as head coach at California (Pa.) and has a record of with the Vulcans. Overall, he is in his 24th year as a college head coach and has a career record. When IUP has the Ball The Vulcans went up against one of the top offenses in the PSAC in Edinboro last week and allowed 31 points. Overall, the Vulcans defense has given up over 100 yards per game more this year through four games than they have last year on average. Cal has given up ypg and 11 touchdowns so far this year. It s rush defense is particularly down from last year and currently ranks 11th at ypg. Their pass defense has been better, as it ranks fourth at ypg. Although they have given up some yards this year, Cal is still tied for a respectable fifth place in scoring defense, allowing just 21.8 ppg, although the Vulcans have given up over 30 points to two of the three ranked opponents they have played so far this year. This should present an interesting matchup with IUP, as the Crimson Hawks have put up some staggering offensive numbers in their first three games, as they lead the league in scoring (49.7 ppg) and total offense (508.7 ypg), and have nearly a balance on offense as they rank second in the both rushing (252.3 ypg) and passing (256.3 ypg) offense. However, it should be noted that these performances have come against three teams that are ranked in the bottom five in scoring defense in the PSAC. IUP is led in the running game by Tobias Robinson, who leads the PSAC in rushing at ypg and has scored six touchdowns in just three games. In the passing game, quarterback Andrew Krewatch leads the league in pass efficiency at 177.0, having completed a league best 65.8 percent of his passes and thrown for seven touchdowns and just two interceptions. He also ranks third in both passing yards and total offense per game. Receiver Ken Witter leads the PSAC in receiving yards per game at 96.7 and is fourth in catches per game, having caught five touchdowns in just three games. When California (Pa.) has the Ball IUP has allowed just 10 points in three games and lead the league in all defensive categories, including scoring, rushing, passing and total defense at just ypg. However, it should be noted once again that these numbers came against three of the bottom four teams in the PSAC in scoring offense. They are yet to give up a passing touchdown and are tied for the league lead in interceptions with six, including two by Andre Henderson. Something will give in this matchup, as while it was the defense that carried the Vulcans last year, it has been the offense so far this year. The Vulcans are ranked second in scoring (37.5), third in rushing (257.8 ypg), fifth in passing (236.0 ypg) and second in total offense (473.8) behind only IUP. They also lead the league in first downs with 92 and in rushing touchdowns with 13. Daine Williams, Brandon Lombardy and Windell Brown are a powerful trio in the backfield while quarterback Kevin McCabe has completed 65.4 percent of his passes, second best in the league. He ranks fifth in pass efficiency and passing yards per game. His favorite target is the tall Marcel Pestano, who is second in receptions per game and receiving yards per game (85.2). On Special Teams Cal s Derek Fiorenza leads the PSAC with an average net punt of 43.5 yards and has had just one returned. Cal is also second in kick returns at 24.5 ypr, led by Windell Brown at 29.8 ypr, and third in punt returns at 13.9 ypr. Despite having returned just four kickoffs, a league low, IUP is averaging 31 ypr on those to lead the league. On punts, the Hawks are averaging 19.7 ypr, also tops in the PSAC. IUP has kicked a league high 20 PATs and is a perfect 20-for-20 on extra points. Series/Game Notes Series: IUP leads the all-time series with California (Pa.) Last Meeting: California (Pa.) 38, IUP 12 ( at Indiana, Pa.) Cal has won two of the past three meetings with IUP, with both Vulcan wins coming on the road...prior to that, however, IUP had won 20 straight meetings from although IUP leads the PSAC in many offensive categories, one area the Crimson Hawks are ranked last in is penalty yards per game, as the Hawks have amassed 77.3 ypg in penalties so far...the Vulcans aren t that far behind, as they are averaging 77 ypg in penalties and have committed what is tied for a league-high 35 penalties...this game will wrap up a brutal string for Cal in which it played four ranked teams in its first five games, including the two teams picked to finish 1-2 in the PSAC East in West Chester and Bloomsburg, and the two teams picked to finished 2-3 in the PSAC West below Cal in IUP and Edinboro.

8 Slippery Rock at Mercyhurst Sept. 27-1:00 p.m. Erie, Pa. Louis J. Tullio Field (2,300) Radio/Internet: msasportsnetwork.com/wmce 88.5/104.9 FM/wmce.mercyhurst.edu Overall: 3-1 Overall: 2-2 PSAC West: 1-0 PSAC West: 1-0 The Coaches Dr. George Mihalik is in his 21st year as head coach at Slippery Rock and has a career record of Marty Schaetzle is in his seventh year as head coach at Mercyhurst and has a career record. When Slippery Rock has the Ball Quarterback Brandon Frohnapple has continued avoiding big mistakes, as he has thrown just one interception in four games, best among PSAC quarterbacks, and he ranks ninth in the league in passing yardage per game at 150 to go along with five touchdowns. However, The Rock s offense is ranked closer to the bottom in total offense (291 ypg - 13th) as well as passing (150 ypg - 12th) and rushing (141.0 ypg - 11th) offense, despite having seven rushing touchdowns. Running back Corey Manfull made a brief appearance The Rock s win over Gannon last week after missing the last two games due to injury. In his place, Ryan Lehmeier has averaged 92.8 ypg rushing with seven TDs but has gone over 100 yards just once in four games, when he ran for over 200 vs. Millersville, which has the worst rushing defense in the conference. By contrast, Mercyhurst gave up just 25 yards on the ground to Clarion last week and for the year, rank second in rushing defense (121.5 ypg), in addition to second in passing (104.5), overall (226.0 ypg) and scoring (11.2 ppg) defense. Mercyhurst has allowed just 44 opponent first downs, the second fewest in the PSAC. The Lakers also lead the PSAC in sacks with 13 and are getting off the field on third down better than all but one team in the conference, as they have allowed opponents to convert on just 23.8 percent of third downs, which has helped lead to the Lakers leading the league in time of possession. How well Slippery Rock can hang onto the ball and dig into Mercyhurst s league-leading time of possession may be the deciding factor in this matchup. When Mercyhurst has the Ball The Rock s defense will be tested in its ability to get off the field, as its defense matches up well with Mercyhurst s from a yardage standpoint. Rock is allowing ypg while the Lakers are averaging just to rank just 10th. Rock is giving up 22.8 ppg while Hurst is averaging The major difference, which could tilt the matchup in Mercyhurst s favor if the Lakers continue doing what they have been doing in their first four games, is the time of possession and third down conversion battle. The Rock is allowing opponents to convert 43.8 percent of the time on third downs, third worst in the league. By contrast, Mercyhurst leads the league in overall and average time of possession at over 35 minutes per game and are ranked second in the country in that category. This is due partially to the fact that the Lakers are converting on third downs 46.4 percent of the time, second in the PSAC in addition to the defense getting off the field over 75 percent of the time on third down. On the negative side, however, just as the Laker defense leads the PSAC in sacks, the offense is at the other end of the rankings as Mercyhurst has allowed what is tied for a league high 13 sacks. Like his counterpart Fronapple, Laker QB Garrett Kensy has not put up spectacular numbers, as he is throwing for just 89.2 ypg, but has avoided the big mistake, throwing just one interception to go along with four TDs while completing 58.8 percent of his passes. Ben Jennings and Richard Stokes form the backfield duo for Mercyhurst, with Jennings ranking eighth in the PSAC at 91.8 rushing ypg. On Special Teams Slippery Rock s C.J. Bahr is 4-for-5 on field goals and 14-for-14 on PATs while punter Kyle Witman is averaging 41.2 yards per punt. In the return game, Anthony Walls is averaging 25.9 ypr on kicks for The Rock, eighth best in the league, and 12.1 ypr on punts, third best. Mercyhurst s Jordan Bukowski is averaging just 35.9 yards per punt but the Lakers have had only two punts returned on them, the second-fewest in the league, and those returns have gone for a combined -18 yards. in the return game, Theo Hall is averaging 24.4 ypr on kicks while Aaron Haynes ranks eighth in punt return average at 9.4 ypr. Series/Game Notes Series: This will mark the first-meeting between Slippery Rock and Mercyhurst Despite its defense s ability to get off the field, Mercyhurst is ironically the only team in the PSAC that is yet to record an interception on defense this year...the Lakers are also tied for last in the league in turnover margin at -5...The Rock s red zone defense has only allowed opponents to score just 56.2 percent of the time, second best in the PSAC. West Chester at Kutztown Sept. 27-1:00 p.m. Kutztown, Pa. University Field (5,600) Radio/Internet: RedZoneMedia.com Overall: 2-2 Overall: 1-3 PSAC East: 1-0 PSAC East: 0-1 The Coaches Bill Zwaan is in his sixth year as head coach at West Chester, where he has a record of Overall, he has a career record in this, his 12th year as a college head coach. Raymond Monica is in his third year as head coach at Kutztown and has a career mark of When West Chester has the Ball The Golden Rams have fared much better passing the ball this year up until last week, when D Andre Webb ran for 306 yards in a win over Millersville. West Chester now ranks eighth in the league in rushing at Their passing offense is much better, however, at ypg, led by quarterback Joe Wright, who is fourth in the PSAC in passing yards per game and third in pass efficiency at 162.3, completing 59.1 percent of his passes with eight touchdowns but also six interceptions. His two top receivers are very reliable in Steve Miller (74.5 ypg - 6th) and Mike Washington (4 TD). This sets up an interesting matchup with Kutztown, who held Bloomsburg s league-leading running attack well under its season average in rushing yards last week but let the Huskies get well above their passing total. This all despite that the Golden Bears are statistically better against the pass (119.8 ypg - 3rd) than the run (151.0 ypg - 8th). Kutztown has also only allowed 58 opponent first downs, the third-fewest in the league. When Kutztown has the Ball Statistically, the Golden Rams have had two bad games on defense and two good games. They have given up over 40 points in two contests and held their opponent to 10 or under in the other two. As a result, West Chester is ranked around the middle of the PSAC in most defensive categories, including scoring defense at 27 a game. They are led up front by Mike Walter, who has 5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. Mike Dell is tied for the league lead with two interceptions. Kutztown has nearly a balance in the running and passing games, as the Bears are fifth in rushing (193.5 ypg) and seventh in passing (200.8 ypg). The Golden Bears are also converting on third downs at a league-leading rate of 46.7 and have converted on a league-leading 28 third downs. They also have 82 first downs, which ranks third in the league. However, despite their ability to move the ball, they rank just ninth in scoring at 25 ppg. Part of the problem is that they have turned the ball over a league high 12 times and have scored on just 68.4 percent on their red zone chances, including just eight touchdowns in 19 total chances. Quarterback Shane Martin ranks sixth in passing yards and fourth in total offense (238.5 ypg), while receiver Jason Uhlig is third in receiving yards per game (80.8) and seventh in receptions per game. On Special Teams West Chester has returned just four punts this year but is averaging 11.2 yards per return to rank fifth in the league. Jackson Fagan is averaging 23.1 yards on seven kick returns. In the kicking department, Alex Walsh has attempted (and made) just one field goal but has missed four extra points, as he is just 13-for-17 on PATs. He has been better in the punting department, as he is averaging 42.5 yards per punt. Kutztown is averaging just 16.2 yards on kick returns but 10.3 on punt returns, led by Kendell Coleman at 10.1 per return. Kicker Matt Dineen is 5- for-8 on field goals, including 3-for-4 from yards. Punter Ryan Nye is averaging 39.5 yards per punt to rank in the middle of the PSAC. Series/Game Notes Series: West Chester leads Kutztown in the all-time series Last Meeting: West Chester 21, Kutztown 0 ( at Kutztown, Pa.) West Chester has won the last four meetings in the series...kutztown s last win came in 2003 at Kutztown, a one-point win...turnovers may play a key in this matchup as Kutztown is tied for the league lead with 12 turnovers, while West Chester has turned it over 10 times...the Golden Rams are tied for last in turnover margin at -5 while Kutztown is at -3...Kutztown has outgained three of its four opponents this year...the Golden Bears are the second-least penalized team in the league with just 12 penalties in four games and an average of just 28.8 penalty yards per contest...west Chester is third in fewest penalty yards per game at 36 ypg.

9 Millersville at Shippensburg Sept. 27-1:00 p.m. Shippensburg, Pa. Seth Grove Stadium (7,700) TV: SUTV Radio/Internet: Marauder Sports Broadcasting Network/ FM Overall: 0-4 Overall: 1-3 PSAC East: 0-1 PSAC East: 0-1 The Coaches Greg Colby is in his first year as head coach at Millersville and has an 0-4 career record. Rocky Rees is in his 19th year as head coach at Shippensburg and has a career mark with the Red Raiders. Overall, he is in his 24th year as a college head coach and has a career record of When Millersville has the Ball The Marauders are ranked near the bottom of the PSAC in most offensive categories. They attempted to change things up last week as redshirt sophomore Bill Shirk got the start, just the second of his career, and former quarterback Jamal Smith - last year s PSAC East Rookie of the Year - was moved to wide receiver while Brad Lantz, a running back last year who was moved to tight end to start this year, was moved back to the backfield. There were mixed results, as Smith caught six passes for 131 yards and an 80-yard touchdown while Shirk threw for 243 yards. However, Millersville still struggled with the run, rushing for just 101 yards, as the Marauders are averaging just yards rushing per game. They are also second to last in passing offense at ypg and third to last in both total (236.0 ypg) and scoring (14.8 ppg) offense. Millersville is hopeful that the changes that were made can lead to some better offensive production. Shippensburg s defense is ranked around the middle of the PSAC in total and scoring defense. The Red Raiders are particularly good against the run, as they are fourth in rushing defense at just ypg, but not great against the pass, as they are giving up ypg through the air, although they have given up just four passing touchdowns. Part of the reason for this discrepancy is that the Raiders are second in the league in sacks with 10. Linebackers Josh Oswalt and Riley Bowen are ranked sixth and 10th, respectively, in the league in tackles for loss with 6 and 5, respectively. Jason Stone, meanwhile, has been a playmaker on defense for Ship, as he is fourth in tackles per game at 9.5 and also has forced a pair of fumbles while Bowen leads the league in fumbles recovered with three. Travis Proctor leads the league in pass break-ups with seven. When Shippensburg has the Ball Millersville ranks last in the league in scoring, rushing, passing and total defense, as they are giving up an average of 41.8 points, rushing ypg, including 14 rushing TDs, and passing ypg, including 10 passing TDs. The Mauraders have also allowed a league-high 95 first downs to its opponents. Linebacker Matt Harmon does rank in a tie for seventh in the league in tackles per game at 8.2. Millersville also has recorded just two sacks on defense, a league low. The Red Raiders offense, like their defense, ranks around the middle of the PSAC in most categories, including scoring (26.0-8th). They have moved the ball well at times, but have killed themselves with turnovers, turning the ball over a league-high 12 times, and a third-down conversion rate of just 25.4 percent, second worst in the league. Despite, having completed just 41.7 percent of his passes, quarterback Chad DiFebbo ranks eighth in passing yards (152.2 ypg) and ninth in total offense. His favorite target is Mike Harris, who is third in catches per game and seventh in receiving yards per game (72.8). Harris has caught 20 passes but no other receiver has caught more than six balls. The running back tandem of Chris Infante and Kevin Marshall is combining to average just over 100 yards per game on the ground On Special Teams MU punter John Banzhof is averaging 41.5 yards per punt and the Mauraders are fourth in the league in net punting average at He is also 4-for-7 on field goals and 5-for-6 on PATs. Millersville also has a decent punt return team as Andy Tischbein is fifth in the league at 11.3 yards per punt return, including a touchdown. Shippensburg has a good kick return game, led by Kevin Marshall at 32.5 yards per return, but its punt returns are averaging just 2.3 per return. Punter Kyler Ford is averaging 40.7 yards per punt but is just 2-for-6 on field goals and 8-for- 11 on PATs. Series/Game Notes Series: Shippensburg leads Millersville in the all-time series Last Meeting: Shippensburg 23, Millersville 14 ( at Millersville, Pa.) Despite having been in opposite PSAC divisions up until this year, Shippensburg and Millersville have met 13 times in the past 20 years...the Red Raiders have won the last four meetings, dating back to 2001, but Millersville won the previous five before that...a bright spot for the Mauraders continues to be good discipline as they continue to lead the PSAC in fewest penalties with 8 and fewest penalty yards per game at The Red Raiders have gained a league-high 15 turnovers but have also lost a league-high 12. Cheyney at East Stroudsburg Sept. 27-6:00 p.m. East Stroudsburg, Pa. Eiler-Martin Stadium (6,000) TV: Blue Ridge TV-13 Radio/Internet: RedZoneMedia.com/WPVO 840 AM Overall: 0-4 Overall: 4-0 PSAC East: 0-1 PSAC East: 1-0 The Coaches Jeff Braxton is in his first year as head coach at Cheyney and has an 0-4 career record. Denny Douds is in his 35th year as head coach at East Stroudsburg and has a career record. He broke the PSAC record for wins by a head coach last week. When Cheyney has the Ball After racking up decent offensive numbers in its first game of the year, Cheyney has struggled to move the ball in its next three, having been shut out in two of them. The Wolves are averaging just 86.2 ypg on the ground and ypg in the air, have made just 39 first downs this year, second to last in the league, and are last in third down conversions at just 21.4 percent. One bright spot has been receiver Travis Taltoan, who is averaging 17 yards per catch and 51 receiving yards a game. East Stroudsburg s defense carried it to its first two wins of the year, while it was more the offense keying the last two wins. Look for the defense to once again key this game, particularly its pass defense, which ranks sixth at just ypg, going up against Cheyney s passing game. The Warriors have given up an average of ypg on the ground. They have a pair of standout linebackers patrolling the middle of the field in Matt Freed and Fred Rice, who rank 1-2 in the PSAC in tackles per game with 11.8 and 11.0, respectively. When East Stroudsburg has the Ball The Wolves are second-to-last in the PSAC in scoring defense (40.2) and rushing defense (244.5), but have a decent passing defense, where they are ranked fifth at just 159 ypg. Overall, however, Cheyney has given up 21 touchdowns, the second most in the league, and over 400 yards of total offense per game. Another big problem for the Wolves has been inability to get off the field on third down, as Cheyney s opponents have converted a league best 52.1 percent of the time on third down. That should set up an interesting matchup, as Cheyney s defensive weakness plays to East Stroudsburg s weakness. The Warriors rushing game is averaging just 78.2 ypg, second worst in the league, but they have still managed to score seven rushing touchdowns. Meanwhile, Cheyney s passing defense, its strength, will be going up against an East Stroudsburg passing game that has exploded behind quarterback Tim Roken in the last two weeks after a slow start. The Warriors lead the league in passing offense at ypg and Roken ranks first in passing yards per game (281.8), overall passing yards (1127) and total offense after throwing for 420 and 414 yards in the last two weeks. Two receivers, Doug Ogden (79 ypg) and Sam Shuman (69.8 ypg) rank in the top 10 in the PSAC in receiving yards per game. On Special Teams Cheyney is yet to attempt a field goal this year, the only team in the PSAC that can claim that. They are also just 2-for-5 on PATs. The Wolves are also yet to return a punt this year and are averaging just 14.9 ypr on kickoffs. For East Stroudsburg, punter Nick Krut leads the PSAC in punting average at 46.7 and the Warriors are tied for first in net punting average at Kicker Greg Knauss is just 4-for-8 on field goals but is 16-for-17 on PATs. Drew Stem and Jeff Giglio are ESU s kick returners and both rank in the top 10 in the PSAC in average as Stem is averaging 26.4 ypr and Giglio is at 25.7 ypr. Series/Game Notes Series: East Stroudsburg leads Cheyney 51-1 in the all-time series Last Meeting: East Stroudsburg 42, Cheyney 6 ( at Cheyney,Pa.) Cheyney s only win in the series came in 1979, a 7-3 victory...east Stroudsburg has won the last 28 straight meetings with the Wolves, an NCAA Division II record for consecutive wins by one school over another school...a big positive for Cheyney so far this year is that the Wolves are yet to lose a fumble.

10 #24/25 Edinboro at Lock Haven Sept. 27-7:00 p.m. Lock Haven, Pa. Hubert Jack Stadium (3,500) Radio/Internet: ESPN Radio 1050 AM/FM 104.1/espnwilliamsport.com Overall: 3-1 Overall: 0-4 PSAC West: 0-1 PSAC West: 0-1 The Coaches Scott Browning is in his third year as head coach at Edinboro and has a career record. John Klacik is in his fourth year as head coach at Lock Haven and has a 5-32 career mark. When Edinboro has the Ball Better known for being a passing team now, Edinboro ran for a season-high 230 yards in a close four-point loss to Cal last week, led by Houston Brown s 118 yards and 91 from quarterback Trevor Harris. The Fighting Scots have a respectable running game that ranks sixth in the PSAC at but Harris and their passing game is what makes them go. The Scots, more specifically Harris, have thrown at league-high 11 TD passes and are third in passing offense at They are also third in total offense and scoring offense (32.8). Harris ranks second in passing yards, total offense and passing efficiency, and is one of just two quarterbacks in the league that have thrown for more than 1000 yards in the first four games of the year. Lock Haven held IUP s high-flying offense at bay for a half last week, holding the Crimson Hawks to just seven first half points. But IUP then scored 38 second half points to run away. Lock Haven ranks second to last in total defense, giving up ypg, and third to last in scoring defense, allowing 37 ppg, which does not bode well for matching up with Edinboro s offense. One of the few positives for the Bald Eagles is their third down defense, which has allowed opponents to convert on third down just 28.9 percent of the time, fourth in the league. When Lock Haven has the Ball After not allowing more than 11 points in its first three games, Edinboro more than doubled its points given up on the year by allowing 35 last week to Cal. Despite that, the Scots defensive numbers are still considerably better than last year. They rank third in scoring defense (15.8) and fourth in total defense (313 ypg). They only category they are ranked a little lower than the rest in is pass defense, as they have given up ypg to rank eighth. Oddly enough, Edinboro ranks 10th in opponent first downs with 72 but leads in opponents third down conversion rate at just 22.9 percent. Jeremy Appell has been a playmaker for the Scots on the defensive line, as he has two sacks and three fumble recoveries. The Bald Eagles have had problems moving the ball on offense, as they have scored just 13 points in four games and rank last in the PSAC in rushing, passing and total offense, generating just 88.5 ypg overall. They are also last in first downs. Freshman Jerryd Burkett has started the last two games at quarterback, taking over for Ilio DiPaolo, who was moved to receiver and now leads the team in catches. On Special Teams Josh Brown is averaging 22 yards per kick return for Edinboro but as a team, the Scots are averaging just 18.1 yards a return. On punts, Edinboro is averaging 10 yards a return. In the kicking department, Ryan Genco is averaging 40.1 yards a punt while Alex Romanias is 2-for-2 on field goals and 15-for-17 on PATs. Lock Haven is 0-for-2 on field goals, one of just two teams in the conference without a field goal so far this year. The Bald Eagles have also had six different players return kickoffs this year, with all six averaging just 18.9 yards a return. They are also averaging just 3.4 yards on punt returns. Series/Game Notes Series: Edinboro leads the all-time series over Lock Haven Last Meeting: Edinboro 70, Lock Haven 19 ( at Edinboro, Pa.) Edinboro has won the last seven meetings with Lock Haven and 25 of the last 26...LHU s last win in the series came in 2000 but prior to that, its last win was in One strength for Lock Haven is that it has forced its opponents into committing 74.8 yards worth of penalties per game, the highest in the league...the Bald Eagles have reached the red zone only four times this year, the fewest in the league, and have converted on just two of those...edinboro has recovered nine fumbles this year, tied for the league lead...lock Haven s opponents are committing a league high 74.8 yards of penalties per game. Clarion at Gannon Sept. 27-7:00 p.m. Erie, Pa. Gannon University Field (2,500) Radio/Internet: RedZoneMedia.com/Jet Radio 1400/wergfm.com Overall: 1-3 Overall: 2-2 PSAC West: 0-1 PSAC West: 0-1 The Coaches Jay Foster is in his third year as head coach at Clarion and has a career record of Jim Kiernan is in his second year as head coach at Gannon and has a career record of When Clarion has the Ball Up until last week, Clarion had scored at least 20 points in its first three games and displayed an ability to move the ball successfully. However, they were held to just a late touchdown last week by a stout Mercyhurst defense. Despite last week s performance, the Golden Eagles have shown signs of improvement this year, especially in the running game, where tailbacks Eddie Emmanuel and Nick Sipes have combined to average over 115 ypg. Quarterback Gino Romento had improved his completion percentage by over 15 percent and is completing 63.2 percent of his passes and ranks seventh in passing yards per game at His main problem has been interceptions as he has thrown four with just two TD passes. He has some reliable receivers in Jaques Robinson, who leads the league in catches per game with six, as well as Matt Foradora and Alfonso Hoggard. Gannon s defense is another unit that has shown great improvement over last year. The Golden Knights are tied for fifth in the PSAC in scoring defense at 21.8 ppg, over 25 points per game less than last year so far, while its defense is giving up ypg, not spectacular, but still good enough to rank seventh in the PSAC and nearly 175 fewer yards on average than last year. They have also given up just 10 touchdowns, the sixth-fewest in the league. That is due in part to the Golden Knights having allowing its opponents just 10 trips to the red zone, the fifth-fewest in the league. When Gannon has the Ball Clarion s defense, like its offense, has shown some improvement this year, but likely needs more to get to where it wants to go. The best part of Clarion s defense so far has been its rush defense, which is ranked in the middle of the league at ypg as the return of standout lineman Jimmy Simmons has been a big boost to the Golden Eagles this year. Simmons leads the PSAC in tackles for loss with 10.5, is second in sacks with 3.0 and is tied for fifth in tackles per game with 8.5. Its passing defense and scoring defense are ranked lower, and the Eagles are giving up 33.2 ppg. The Golden Knights appear to be content to use the two-quarterback system this year, with pocket passer Bob Bartley and the more mobile Zach Boedicker rotating taking snaps. That was worked well for the passing game, which is averaging 177 ypg, as well as the running game, as Boedicker, along with primary backs Jon Richardson and Anthony Weaver are all combining to average over 200 yards a game on the ground. As a team, Gannon is fourth in the PSAC in run offense at ypg, so Clarion should have its hands full stopping the run. Richardson is second in the conference in average rushing yards at ypg and is also averaging 7.9 yards per carry. Overall, Gannon s offense ranks a respectable seventh in the league at ypg, an increase of over 150 ypg from last year. On Special Teams Alfonso Hoggard is one of the top return men in the PSAC, as he is averaging 11 yards per punt return and 22.4 yards per kick return. Punter Nicholas Perla is averaging a decent 38.2 yards on punts but has put just two inside the 20. Kicker Robert Mamula is 2-for-3 on field goals and 9-for-11 on PATs. For the Golden Knights, they have two players in the top 10 in kick return average: Levar Goff (32.8-2nd) and Chris Cook (26.8-5th). Anthony Weaver is averaging 8.8 ypr on punts. Kicker Jeremy Ditzler leads the PSAC in field goals and FG attempts, as he is 7-for-9 and 9-for-10 on PATs. He is also sixth in the country in FGs per game. Series/Game Notes Series: This will be the first meeting between Clarion and Gannon Gannon is one of only two schools in the PSAC that has not yet lost a fumble this year...the Golden Knights have surpassed their win total from last year in just four games...this game will feature the two top men in the PSAC in all purpose yards, as Clarion s Alfonso Hoggard leads the league with all purpose ypg while Gannon s Jon Richardson is second at
