PERRY BOWLING GREEN STATE UNIVERSITY HEAD FOOTBALL COACH The 1965 annual spring football game at Bowling Green State University has been dedicated to a man who in 10 years as the head coach has brought immeasurable acclaim not only to the sport of football at Bowling Green but to the state of Ohio, the Mid-American Conference, the city of Bowling Green and the University in general. His excellent record of 77 victories, 10 losses and five ties undoubtedly will go down in National Collegiate Athletic Association history as an alltime mark that could stand for many years. During this decade Bowling Green won five Mid- American Conference football championships. They were runnersup on three occasions and third place caught them only twice. The 1959 season must go down as one of the top endeavors of Perry, who guided the Falcons to an undefeated 9-game season, the first and only season in 46 years of football. It was climaxed with a 30-8 victory over University of Delaware for the national college division championship. The 1956 season was marred only bv a 7-7 tie with Miami. In only two seasons the Falcons were defeated twice. Another record that has a good chance of long standing is Perry's mark against non-conference opponents. During his coaching stand, Bowling Green teams played 32 non-league games and won 31. The only loss was a 23-7 defeat by West Texas State during the 1962 season. Besides the fine team showing that Falcon elevens have displayed, there have been many individuals who have picked up a multitude of honors in the nation, in Ohio and in the Mid-American Conference. Bernard Casey '61 and Bob Zimpfer '60 were selected as Little ail-americans. Thirty-two different individuals have been named to the first team of Mid-American Conference teams as selected by the league coaches. Casey and tackle Bob Reynolds '64 played in the College all-star game while Casev also was a choice for the East-West game in San Francisco. Four Bowling Green graduates are active members of National Football League teams. Casey is a veteran member of the San Francisco 49ers along with Don Lisbon '63, another excellent halfback. Reynolds is a two year veteran of the St. Louis Cardinals at tackle. Ed Bettridge '64 was a rookie with the Cleveland Browns last season. Roger Reynolds '63 will be coming out of service soon to rejoin the New York Giants as a flanker back. Three members of Perry's last team, the 1964 MAC champions, have signed professional contracts and will report in July. They are Jay Cunningham (Boston Patriots), Tony Lawrence (St. Louis Cardinals) and Tom Sims (Los Angeles Rams). While Perry was setting these innumerable records, the former Bowling Green quarterback has made many other contributions to the University program that have gone unmentioned so often among the record ray. In his coaching period, Perry has had 11 different assistant coaches. This group of men have been some of the best teachers that any university could wish to employ. They not only are capable coaches, good counselors of young men but have been a vital part in the teaching staff of the health and physical education department. Two of them, Edward (Bo) Schembechler of Miami and Jack Fouts of Ohio Wesleyan, are head coaches at their institutions. But along with an excellent staff, Perry has brought to BG some of the finest youth in the state of Ohio. This can be best registered by a record that Dovt is probably more proud than any other. Over 190 different football players have gained letters under Perry in these 10 years and 184 of them earned their degrees from the University. While his won-loss record is at 86 per cent, the graduating percentage is over 96 per cent. There have been many other young men who have been encouraged to come to Bowling Green by Perry and now are among its alumni. So today while Dovt Perry starts getting acquainted with the duties of athletic director, the members of his staff, the members of his teams, the loval football fans, the members of the alumni following and the members of the University family students, faculty, staff and emnloyees are happy to dedicate this soring game to a fine gentleman, an excellent coach and a great contributor to the youth of America at Bowling Green State University.
