2 OUTLOOK 2005 SAMFORD FOOTBALL: BEGINNING A NEW ERA T he 2005 football season marks the beginning of a new era in Samford football. Gone are the team s all-time leading passer (Ray Nelson) and all-time leading receiver (Efrem Hill), as well as the team s center that started every game during the last two seasons (Brad Baker). Offensively, losing the receiver and quarterback is big, Samford Head Coach Bill Gray said. But we found out early in the spring that losing the center we ve had for the last two years is equally important. The Bulldogs have a very talented group of young receivers to help make up for the loss of Hill. The quarterback spot is more of a concern for Gray and his coaching staff. The quarterback position is one that really didn t get settled during the spring, Gray said. We didn t have anyone separate from the pack, but we are going to look at that as a positive. We have a couple of guys, if not three, we can put out there and feel confident they can get the job done. We feel really good about our receivers, Gray continued. They are as deep a group as we have ever had. Although we are losing a great one, we have a lot of guys who have played a lot of snaps for us at receiver. How well the offense does will be determined by how quickly the young offensive linemen mature this season, Gray added. The players we have this year will give us the chance to run the ball more than we have in recent years. Coming out of the spring, Gray said the outlook of the team was positive and the coaches are pleased with the team s progress. We felt good coming out of the spring about some of the depth we have created at some positions, Gray said. But it s not uniform across the line, and we still have some spots where depth is a problem. On the defensive side of the ball, Gray feels the team has improved from last season. We have tried to instill more of a physical aspect to our defense. We have to continue to work to be more physical on a daily basis. The defense will be young up front, but Gray and his staff feel good about the group. We have some depth and some ability there, Gray said. Confidence comes with playing experience. We have some some guys with a year of experience now, and that should help them be better football players. Gray added that the team has as strong a group of linebackers as it has had in several years. Samford signed 18 student-athletes for the upcoming season, and the signees filled the needed spots. We went into recruiting continuing to try to provide depth on defense, Gray said. Defense was the focus, but we also wanted a tall receiver and a tall quarterback, and we were able to get both of those. We also got some guys with speed that will compete at the skill positions as well. Parker Gargis 10

3 OUTLOOK Lee registered four receptions for 24 yards. Freddy Young and Jeff Moore are the two starters at outside receiver, with J. T. Washington serving as backup. Last season, Young caught 38 passes for 316 yards and two touchdowns, while Moore hauled in 30 passes for 426 yards and three scores. Washington was redshirted in Buchannon could see some time at outside receiver as well. Samford signed four receivers in the 2005 class. Jordan Blevins from Arab, Ala., Matt Knauss of Atlanta, Ga., Jonathan Lowery of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Burton Elrod of Nashville, Tenn., join the team this season. TIGHT END Josh Brennard returns as the starter at tight end after spending his first two years as the teams top tight end. Brennard caught 18 passes for 158 yards and three touchdowns as a sophomore last season. Jonathan Frazier will compete for the spot of backup tight end. Frazier is moving to tight end from the defensive side this season. Hart has impressed the coaches with his work ethic and athletic ability. TIGHT END 15 Jonathan Frazier RS-So. \83 Josh Brennard RS-Jr. 99 Michael Deen RS-So. T. C. Myers THE BULLDOGS BY POSITION: OFFENSIVE LINE Returning to the offensive line at left tackle is senior Kevin Pughsley, who has been a starter for three years at Samford. Matt Crum returns at left guard. The left side of the offensive line has maintained consistency the last couple of years, Gray said. RECEIVERS 5 Ossie Buchannon RS-Sr. 8 Joe Jones So. 12 Jonathan Lowery Fr. 16 J. T. Washington RS-Fr. 31 Joe Bell RS-Fr. 34 John Selph RS-Fr. 37 Burton Elrod Fr. 41 David Lee RS-So. 81 Freddy Young Jr. 82 Jeff Moore So. 84 Matt Knauss Fr. 87 Jordan Blevins Fr. At center, replacing two-year starter Brad Baker is Graham Lemmond, who moves from the defensive side of the ball. The staff is not sure who will start at right guard, but Mitchell Waters saw the most time there in the spring. Colby Hooper is listed as the starter at right tackle. Gray added that Tommy Smith could see some playing time at right guard as well. Inexperience is a concern on the offensive line. How quickly the unit matures this season will go a long way in determining how well the offense performs. WIDE RECEIVER At the inside receiver positions, Joe Jones and Ossie Buchannon will see the majority of the playing time. Buchannon was the team s secondleading receiver last year, catching 43 passes for 400 yards and a touchdown. Jones caught seven passes for 67 yards and a touchdown. Gray added that David Lee also will see some playing time at inside receiver. In 2004, RUNNING BACK Justin Ray, who moves from the defensive side of the ball, came out of the spring as the top player on the depth chart at the running back position. The coaches said Ray grew more comfortable with the position during the spring. Drew Guess, the top returning rusher, was listed as second on the depth chart after the spring. Last season, Guess had 61 carries for 188 yards and three touchdowns as a freshman in We are excited about both of those guys, Gray said. Drew got the majority of the snaps last year for us, and Justin s been a good addition on the offensive side. Samford added three running backs as signees this year. Harris Johnson of Vestavia Hills, Ala., Adrian Bradley of Prattville, Ala., and Luke Landers of Brentwood, Tenn., join the team as freshmen this year. 4 OUTLOOK QUARTERBACK Parker Gargis and Jefferson Adcock are the top two candidates to replace all-time leading passer Ray Nelson. Gargis was 4-for-4 for 29 yards and a touchdown in limited action last season, while Adcock played mostly on special teams. Parker and Jefferson took most of the snaps in the spring, Gray said. Both of those guys did well at times, but consistency was a problem for both. We would feel comfortable with either of those two. Having two quarterbacks is not a concern for us right now. Blake Davidson and Dante Williams follow Gargis and Adcock on the depth chart. Davidson was 2-for-3 last season for seven yards, while Williams was redshirted. Blake was limited in the spring due to a hand injury. Wes Alexander from Sparkman High School in Harvest, Ala., joins the team this year as a freshman. DEFENSIVE LINE QUARTERBACKS 3 Jefferson Adcock RS-So. 7 Blake Davidson RS-Jr. 9 Parker Gargis RS-So. 11 Wes Alexander Fr. 17 Dante Williams RS-Fr. Senior Steve Wisdom starts at an end, while Clyde Triplett returns at one of the tackle positions. In 2004, Wisdom registered 38 tackles, including 15 solo stops. Triplett had 24 tackles, 11 solo, last season. Gray said Haris Kovacevic has a good chance to start at the other inside position. Aidan Clifford also will see a lot of time on the inside of the defensive line. At the other end position, Gray said the starting job is up for grabs. Jonathan Vance and Derek Wolcott will all see action at defensive end. Freddy Young Homewood, Curt Smith of Blountsville, Ala., Scott Smith of Wetumpka, Ala., and Matt Staver of Nease, Fla., all join the team as freshmen this year. The coaches expect the young players to contribute early on the defensive line. LINEBACKER Steve Tennin and Calvin Hodge return to the linebacker spots. Tennin was second on the team in tackles last season with 78 total stops, including 35 solo tackles. Hodge was third on the squad in tackles with 69, with 31 solo stops. Jay McCurty will also play linebacker this year for the Bulldogs. McCurty registered 42 tackles, including 20 solo stops last season while playing the whip position. He moves from whip to a position the coaches say fits him better physically. Bobby Sherman, who sat out last season after transferring from Georgia Southern, will see some time at linebacker as well. Signees C. J. Brown of Prattville, Ala., Ryan Fordham of Birmingham, Andrew Kucera from Norcross, Ga., and Rodney Shepherd of Homewood signed with the Bulldogs as linebackers in CORNERBACK DEFENSIVE SECONDARY 4 T. Myers had 45 tackles and an interception last season. Griffin led the team with four interceptions, and he registered 43 total tackles on the season. Sean Hill had a strong spring and will compete for time at the cornerback positions. Chase McTorry and Kyle Morton also will see time at cornerback this season. Signee Ryan Anderson of Thomasville, Ala., joins the team as a freshman. 12

5 OUTLOOK SAFETY Senior Cortland Finnegan, who has led the team in tackles the last two years, returns as the starter at safety. Despite missing two games with an injury and being less than 100 percent most of last season, Finnegan led the team with 86 tackles, including 37 solo stops. He also was second on the team with three interceptions. Finnegan was named first-team All-OVC for the second year in a row. LINEBACKER 24 Jeremy Long RS-Fr. 21 Steve Tennin Jr. 39 C. J. Hartloge compiled 16 tackles last season in limited action, while Rice was redshirted. Justin Borden from Midfield, Ala., and Quinton Smith from Sparkman High School in Harvest, Ala., join the team as a freshman this season. SPECIAL TEAMS Chris Hicks returns as the team s top punter. Last season, Hicks punted 63 times for an average of 42.0 yards per kick. Twenty-six of his kicks were placed inside the opponents 20- yard line. Hicks also has a chance to compete for the kickoff job, along with field goal and extra-point duties. Shannon Fleming returns as the top placekicker. Fleming was 3-for-5 on field goals last year. Fleming made kicks of 45 and 42 yards to help Samford to a win over Tennessee Tech in the 2004 homecoming game. SCHEDULE The 2005 schedule is highlighted by trips to Division I-A Baylor (Sept. 10) and I-AA KICKER/PUNTER 36 Chris Hicks Jr. 38 Shannon Fleming So. 89 James Steinberger RS-Fr. 92 Andrew Johnson RS-Fr. power Furman (Sept. 17). Samford opens the regular season Thursday, Sept. 1, at home against Edward Waters College. Samford opens the Ohio Valley Conference schedule with a trip to Eastern Illinois Sept. 24. On Oct. 1, Samford hosts Southeast Missouri in the Bulldogs conference home opener. The Bulldogs then travel to Eastern Kentucky Oct. 8 before returning home to take on Murray State Oct. 15.
