3 CLARION & CALIPARI FOREVER TIED Tonight s game pits first-year Kentucky head coach John Calipari against his alma mater. Calipari, who is originally from the Pittsburgh-area, played two seasons with the Golden Eagles after transferring from North Carolina-Wilmington. He fractured his cheek bone during the season and finished the year playing with a face mask fitted for him by Clarion s NCAA D-I wrestling team. In , Clarion was ranked as high as third in the nation and finished while qualifying for the PSAC playoffs. Calipari played in all 27 games and averaged 5.3 ppg to go along with his 143 assists. During the campaign, Clarion and Calipari faced off against Virginia Union and future NBA star Charles Oakley. VU beat Clarion as Oakley had 9 points, 9 rebounds with Calipari 6 points, 1 assist, 1 steal. CALIPARI NOT ONLY FAMOUS CLARION ATHLETE Pete Vuckovich, Sr. - Baseball Vuckovich, who pitched for Clarion in the early 1970s, played 11 years in the Major Leagues for four teams & won the 1982 AL Cy Young Award while with the Milwaukee Brewers, leading the Brewers to their only AL pennant that season. He was the pitching coach for the Pitts. Pirates in the late 1990s and played Clue Haywood in the hit movie Major League. Kurt Angle - Wrestling Angle (1992) is one of 15 members of NWCA/NCAA 75th anniversary all-time wrestling team. Was World Freestyle Champ in 1995 & the Olympic Gold Medalist at 1996 Atlanta Games. He has been a pro wrestling star first with the WWE and now with TNA Wrestling. Alex Sandusky - Football Sandusky (1954) played for the Balt. Colts from (166 games 47 starts) winning NFL titles in 1958 & Started 1958 title game (23-17 OT over NY Giants) at Yankee Stadium in what has become known as the Greatest Game Ever Played. Reggie Wells, Jr. - Football Wells (2008) has been an OG for the Ariz. Cardinals since 2003 and a starter since Was one of the team s co-captains and starters in Super Bowl XLIII after helping the Cards to their first-ever NFC Title. His father Reggie, Sr., is the 2nd leading scorer (2,011) and rebounder (1,120) at Clarion, and his younger brother, Ryan, was a key starter on Clarion s 2005 PSAC-West championship basketball team. PSAC-West title team. Wade Schalles - Wrestling Schalles (1974) is one of 15 members of the NWCA/ NCAA 75th anniversary all-time wrestling team. He earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as wrestling s all-time leader in victories with 821 and falls with 530. He won a Gold Medal at the 1977 World University Games.
